willaful Definitely got some Emma echoes in this chapter, with Lord Whassisface being so proud of his “matchmaking.“ If only NotClare was like Mrs. Weston!
2d
Bookwormjillk I feel like shaking the doctor and telling him it's not too late. 2d

Clare-Dragonfly @willaful My thoughts exactly! 2d
willaful @Bookwormjillk I'm wondering if she actually going to pull off making him happy, just because she's generally so good at it. I'm honestly surprised he's not sick of her already, given he's not much for demonstrations of affection, but then again, he has been single for a long time... 2d
Ruthiella @willaful @Clare-Dragonfly I thought of Emma too! 😂 And yes to @mcctrish @ElizaMarie SO MANY RED FLAGS 🚩‼️ ⛔️⚠️🚨 2d

AllDebooks It was such a quick proposal. Talk about a 'you'll do' attitude. 😅 4d
Cuilin Marry in haste, repent at leisure. I‘m not sure this is all going work out. 4d

mcctrish @Cuilin you said it!!!! Roger is a star ⭐️ #gettingcinderellavibes 4d
willaful Ugh, he doesn't know DIDDLY about her actual character! At least we don't have to call her Clare anymore. #UghHyacinth

Roger is a sweetheart. I'm kind of irritated by Molly, but I tend to hate gooey father-daughter relationships. It's not really her fault she's been spoiled.
(edited) 4d
Bklover @willaful I‘m with you on the gooey relationship with Dad. And Dad appears to be an idiot! It‘s not like he‘s poor and marrying for money! 4d
willaful @Bklover It's hypocritical of me because I have a gooey mother-daughter relationship, lol. 4d
Bklover @willaful Me too!!! 4d
willaful @Bklover 😂 😂 😂 💝 4d
LiteraryChanteuse Great book, great mini series. 😊 4d
Ruthiella This is not a good match! 😱 4d
Lcsmcat @Cuilin 😂🤣😂 So true! 4d
ElizaMarie That proposal sucked! 4d
Bookwormjillk I feel like Hyacinth is such a passive aggressive thing to name a character you don‘t like. No offense to any Hyacinths out there. 3d
julieclair Oh Gibson, Gibson…. SUCH a bad idea. Why didn‘t you ask us first? We‘d have told you not to do it. 😵‍💫 3d
rubyslippersreads @Bookwormjillk The only Hyacinth I can think of is Hyacinth Bucket. 😆 2d

Cuilin Osborne, Coxe, Roger- Molly you in danger girl. 1w
Bookwormjillk A love square and Molly is clueless 1w
See All 12 Comments
mcctrish I just want to acknowledge Jenny, standing up for Bethia who was wrongfully sent to new employment because of Coxe‘s nonsense. And Mr Gibson wishing he could live a life without women. He couldn‘t/wouldnt last a DAY!!!! 1w
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish yessss I forgot poor Bertha and Jenny #boysaredumb 1w
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish Yes!!! Poor Bethia didn‘t deserve any consequences other than having the letter taken from her. 1w
julieclair The stage is set for Roger to fall in love with Molly…. 1w
ElizaMarie I loved this sentence- But fate is a cunning hussy, and builds up her plans as imperceptibly as a bird builds her nest; 7d
BarkingMadRead @elizamarie I almost used #fateisacunninghussy as a hashtag… and then I forgot 🙈 7d

mcctrish A man of 5 and twenty should know better but he‘s still a man FFS if men are so fucking strong that they have to be in charge why can‘t they be in charge of themselves 3w
Bookwormjillk Frustrating chapter 3w
See All 8 Comments
Leftcoastzen It is a frustrating chapter! Maggie left to get the scowls, side eye , etc . Hard times for a woman. She‘s trying to stay strong. 3w
TheAromaofBooks Like I get why Maggie doesn't want to start over, but at the same time - it feels like she always purposefully chooses the hardest possible path for no real reason. 3w
Clare-Dragonfly Yes, very frustrating. Dr. Kenn seems to be a kind man. I hope he comes up with a solution that can satisfy Maggie‘s conscience without making the rest of her life miserable. 3w
eeclayton @TheAromaofBooks it seems like she's internalised the criticism of the community and doesn't feel like she deserves a fresh start. Which is the saddest thing in this book. 3w

mcctrish I don‘t even know what to think at this point - Maggie won‘t marry Stephen because of Lucy, she can‘t be with Philip because of Tom and his lines in the sand so she will be alone ? There are probably more fish in the sea but we are running out of chapters 3w
Bookwormjillk Maggie doesn‘t seem to have any good options and now everyone will blame her for Stephen‘s assery. 3w
See All 13 Comments
dabbe Yep, Maggie gets to go back and face the music while Stephen literally can ride off into the sunset. Damn what these women had to go through in the 1800s! 3w
Leftcoastzen Oh man ! Poor Maggie! Few choices to begin with and now this ! 3w
Leftcoastzen Too all ! Enjoying the read along and all the great comments! 3w
ElizaMarie @dabbe Yes! The 1800s were so brutal for a young woman. She is screwed, Stephen is an ass, he doesn't care about her reputation, and practually blackmails her into marriage for the “sake“ of her reputation - ugh! I hate boys! I feel bad for Maggie. Worried this book will end and she won't find happiness. 3w
dabbe @ElizaMarie 🩵🎯🩵 3w
KAO @ElizaMarie @dabbe Agreeing with you on all points!! (edited) 3w
dabbe @KAO 🎯🩵🎯 3w
Clare-Dragonfly I would like to give Stephen a smack! I don‘t know what options Maggie has now. Someone saw her and Stephen together who knows them 😨 (I‘m guessing and hoping Ben!) She can‘t even get a decent teaching situation if they hear she‘s been alone with a man. 3w
kwmg40 What a chapter! Poor Maggie. 3w
Clare-Dragonfly (Bob, not Ben. I don‘t know if there‘s even a Ben in this book 😂) 3w

Bookwormjillk @dabbe 😂

And how could Stephen screw this up so bad that they got there in like an hour but now it will take 2 days to get back. Maggie is cooked for sure.
3w
dabbe @Bookwormjillk 🎯🩵🎯 3w
KAO This can‘t go well!! 3w
Clare-Dragonfly He kidnapped her!!! THIS IS NOT OKAY. 3w
Clare-Dragonfly I think it would ruin Maggie‘s reputation if they don‘t get married. So he‘s pretty much forced her hand at this point. 3w
Leftcoastzen Uh oh ! Not fair! 3w
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly I agree - I don't like this Stephen guy. He feels so entitled to do whatever, consenquences be damned. He claims to care for her, but then he puts her in a lot of situations a young lady shouldn't be in. AND doesn't listen when she tells him to stop/leave her alone. 3w

mcctrish What to do, what to do? I love how Stephen is mad at Maggie #whatamaroon 4w
Ruthiella I feel like Stephen crossed a line there by showing up and it makes me mad. He‘s putting Maggie in a bad situation-one he can walk away from as a man, but she as a woman cannot live down. She will be unfairly judged either way. 4w
See All 12 Comments
mcctrish @Ruthiella and it‘s not the first time either 🤬 Phillip has noticed and he isn‘t blameless either #tomisgoingtolosehisshit #andstillblamemaggie 4w
TheAromaofBooks Side note, still trying to figure out why the heck Tom is the most important person in Maggie's life. Let's make all our decisions based on what the judgmental jerk who treats you like trash will think 🙄 4w
ElizaMarie @TheAromaofBooks yes!!! I mean how close do you have to stay with your mean brother? She needs to choose her own family. 4w
Ruthiella @TheAromaofBooks I agree and it is frustrating. I think Eliot is telling us that Maggie‘s bond with her brother is stronger than any other ( other than to her father, now deceased). 4w
Bookwormjillk @TheAromaofBooks YES!! Granted the rest of that family would side with him if he tells them to, but Maggie has proven that she can survive on her own. Gritty is the only one who makes sense in this book. 4w
mcctrish @TheAromaofBooks women just being programmed by the patriarchy to do what the men in the family say ( Maggie needs Tom more than he needs her ) 4w
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk she totally has proven she can survive on her own 4w
dabbe The Stephen-Maggie thing has RUTH vibes all over it. Don't give in, Maggie! If only it were the 2020s! 😱 4w
Clare-Dragonfly Ugh! I am SO mad at Stephen now! How dare he show up and tell her she has to talk to him because his poor little manly fee-fees are hurt. How dare he blame her for him riding thirty miles a day about it. Get over yourself, dude. 😡😡😡😡🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻 4w

Bookwormjillk Lucy is so dumb!!! She's going to mess everything up. Ugh. 1mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk I just think the world revolves around Lucy so despite her telling her dad she‘s a smarty, she is clueless also Stephen is toxic 1mo
See All 8 Comments
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish yup, a toxic man playing toxic games 1mo
dabbe At first, the original love triangle reminded me of the one in THE AGE OF INNOCENCE. Now with Philip, I'm like 😳. I think we're headed for a fall. 1mo
ElizaMarie I am not into this Stephen dude- he is gonna cause so much trouble 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t totally blame Stephen for not acting well—his attraction to Maggie is pretty new and he doesn‘t know what to do with it. But I sure hope he shapes up soon and realizes he has to make a choice! (Or preferably leave them both alone because picking one is definitely going to cause drama.) 1mo
Leftcoastzen Kind of a mixed up situation! I agree Lucy is clueless.Lots of potential for heartache and hurt feelings here . 1mo

BarkingMadRead @julieclair I hope so too! 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m glad Phil has friends and Maggie is still close with her cousin! I think things will be very awkward when they show up at the same place. Laughing at the boyfriend‘s descriptions of what he thinks Maggie will be like. 1mo
Leftcoastzen Well , we shall see!😄 1mo
ElizaMarie Hmm- I am going to guess its gonna be so awkward. 1mo
