Clare-Dragonfly “Make another one of the people who horrified and disgusted you” doesn‘t sound like the greatest plan, but I guess the creature didn‘t think of “treat me like a human being and introduce me to other people as one so they‘ll get used to me,” and anyway I don‘t think Victor would go for that after the creature killed William. 1h

My local library branch just reopened after renovations, so OF COURSE kiddo and I were here shortly after opening. This shelf display has me 🧐🤨 Is Frankenstein dark academia? Inquiring minds want to know.

MuddyPuddle Good question! 4d
Litsi No 4d
Cathythoughts I‘ve only just started the book, good question. Maybe not in the traditional sense, but I see dark academia here …. 4d
Clare-Dragonfly Huh… it‘s a stretch but not entirely wrong. Victor goes to university to do all his creating. 4d
ravenlee @MuddyPuddle @Litsi @Cathythoughts @Clare-Dragonfly I can see how you could make the argument, and I agree that there are elements of dark academia, but I think it‘s more adjacent than full-on DA. But while I know Frankenstein reasonably well, I‘m no expert on DA as a genre. 4d

KAO @TheAromaofBooks I take it back! The description of mysterious, misty paths in the mountains of Switzerland in this chapter seems ideal for the setting here! (My limited experiences in the Swiss Alps have mostly been glorious summer days where it was hard to let dark thoughts take up any space in one‘s mind in the face of such grandeur!) (edited) 7d
KAO I confess that I‘m flabbergasted that the creature has such fantastic thought processes and linguistic abilities!! All from the transplanted brain? Can‘t wait to learn more! 7d
See All 12 Comments
Bookwormjillk @KAO that‘s what I thought too! I didn‘t expect such an eloquent creature! 7d
dabbe The creature is highly intelligent and longs for companionship. Victor (the “father) shuns his creation JUST BECAUSE he is hideous on the outside. The creature then becomes hideous on the inside because of his abandonment by Victor. One just has to ask: which is more important to one's development as a human being? Nature or nurture? The easy answer is both are important, but the case for “nurture“ is about to be made by the creature in his tale. 7d
Sparklemn @dabbe Can‘t wait to hear the creature‘s sad tale. 7d
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - I guess any setting can be good for a bit of a horror story if it's stormy enough 😂 7d
dabbe @Sparklemn IKR? It's a doozy. 🖤 7d
ElizaMarie Where did he get the monsters brain? So where was he “hiding” how did the monster get so intelligent. He just wants his daddy to love him. 7d
julieclair The creature‘s eloquence was definitely a surprise! I‘m already beginning to feel a bit sorry for him. 7d

KAO Hmm. This is called chapter 9 in my version. I just checked, and the very last chapter is 24. This will keep me motivated to keep up, since our chapter labels are different! 1w
See All 12 Comments
dabbe @KAO You might be reading the original version, published in 1818, which only has 23 chapters. The second edition, which was edited by Mary Shelley, is usually the one that's read more; it was published in 1831. 1w
KAO @dabbe My cover does say “The original classic text.” No problem—I‘ll keep up! 1w

dabbe Of course, blame the help! Victor is now responsible for two deaths for not being forthcoming regarding his role in this fiasco. It seems that the creature is wreaking his revenge on Victor for abandoning him. All innocence is lost. 1w
See All 16 Comments
KAO Meanwhile, ever since the beginning of this book, I‘ve been amazed that this takes place in Switzerland, of all places! So are these characters British transplants—and I missed that somehow? Or are they really speaking German, French, Italian, or Romansh (official languages of Switzerland), and we‘re just getting an English translation?? Just seems odd to me! 1w
KAO Okay—I had forgotten about the letters at the beginning! Robert Walton wrote to his family members from Russia and then later from his sea voyage about meeting this very sad fellow traveller (Victor, I assume), who spoke “in English, although with a foreign accent” and who later shared his tragic tale. I know he needed to be from a mysterious place, but Switzerland? 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Victor continues to be incredibly self-centered, insisting that he is the most tormented! 1w
ElizaMarie Poor Justine!!! 1w
Sparklemn Why didn‘t anyone at the trial ask how she could have had the physical strength to strangle a healthy young man with her bare hands? 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1w
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - Switzerland has a lot of dramatic settings, so it definitely helps 😂 1w
TheAromaofBooks @Sparklemn - Right? And why said healthy young man would just... let her?? 1w
KAO @TheAromaofBooks I guess you‘re right! My own experiences there have been quite limited and significantly less dramatic in a “great setting for a horror story” sense! 😂 1w
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - Ooooo I would love to visit Switzerland! I am sure photographs do not do it justice! 1w
Seabreeze_Reader @Clare-Dragonfly Those were my thoughts, too! He claims to be wretched but then basically does nothing. By this point, Victor should have been trying to track down his creation, knowing what will likely happen again. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly @Sparklemn @TheAromaofBooks I thought he was a child… 1w
Sparklemn @Clare-Dragonfly oh, he may be a child! I‘m not sure which brother is which. 1w
TheAromaofBooks @Sparklemn @Clare-Dragonfly - I think he was 7 or 8? And “tall for his age“ from Elizabeth's letter. I'm sure he could have been overpowered by a full-grown woman, but it still seems like it would have been a struggle, or that he would have had time to call out for help? 1w

dabbe Maybe the moms die to spur the children to grow up and go on their quest. Victor's mom definitely did that for him. dabbe #mytwocents Two versions of FRANKENSTEIN were published: one in 1818, and one in 1831. The more popular one is the 1831 version. In that one, Elizabeth is “adopted“, but in the 1818 version, she was Alphonse's niece and Victor's real cousin. By 1831, Shelley had experienced the death of two children and her husband, which gave her a more pessimistic view on the story and made her more morally cautious. She also softened Victor's character. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe I wondered which version I had—Project Gutenberg wasn‘t clear! Now I know I have the 1831 text. What an interesting change. Thank you! 2w

This is such a small book with such big ideas. The Creature, although driven to perform evil deeds, is not in himself evil, which a lot of adaptations omit (I am looking forward to the new one to see if they change this). A lot of this book discusses the loneliness of existence and how others treat those who are different, which is relatable to many. Truly a masterpiece.

Just remember that my hashtags are often ridiculous and always chapter spoilers, so don‘t read the post until you‘ve read the chapter!! Anyone can join in! Just drop a comment below!

I just picked up this new edition of Frankenstein at Barnes & Noble last night! Okay, if you are looking to purchase Frankenstein - this is the one to get! Not only does it have a cool cover and gorgeous page edges, but it also has the original introduction from Mary Shelley AND Polidori's and Byron's stories from the night Frankenstein was created! It's really awesome! 💕📚

MittenGirlPeach That sounds like the perfect edition! 4w
5feet.of.fury Ooooh fun! 4w
ShyBookOwl I promised myself I'd stop buying editions of Frankenstein BUUUUUUTTTTTTT.....😍😍😍 4w

My tbr list for #hauntedshelf #letsgopoints. Ambitious but I still have my other challenges ongoing, Octavia Butler books for #authoramonth and #Samoa books for #foodandlit. I‘m very excited about these books even though I know I won‘t get to them all. Must also include my #whattheDickens books!!

Rereads: Frankenstein, Dracula, books 1-2 of All Souls. I‘d love to finish all these books beyond the trilogy!

Thank you @PuddleJumper for the graphic.
All right #BlackCatCrew here are my Team Leader picks for #HauntedShelf for books: The Witches of Eastwick by John Updike, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley & The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty.
This isn't a buddy read. You can read these or any other Team Leaders book picks for an extra 15pts on top of whatever other points they count for 🐈‍⬛

KT1432 I think I may finally take a stab (😬) at The Exorcist lol! 1mo

Frankenstein (Word Cloud) | Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

Pickpick

First off, it was interesting that the book was a story within a story and had 3 narrators (Walton, Frankenstein, and the Creature). That was something I wasn‘t expecting but it worked.

The star of the story was the Creature (aka Frankenstein‘s monster). The Creature was the epitome of being othered. He was so misunderstood and just wanted to belong and feel loved.

Okay, so they think all of this is most likely cancer instead of a side effect of the radiation she had a year ago. She‘s going to have a radiation treatment tomorrow. In about a week, she could start getting the strength back in her legs, but the neurological symptoms could stay like they are now. The goal is to get her to where she can come back home. It‘s not the best news, but there is some hope. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Don‘t even get me started on how horribly Frankenstein treated his “monster.” I know the joke about Frankenstein not being the name of the monster, but I honestly think he was a monster to his creature. Had he treated this creature he had the hubris to make in the first place with a modicum of humanity, it wouldn‘t have been a monster at all and the book would have been so much shorter. #MaryShelley #Frankenstein #audiobook #Wednesday 2mo
Prairiegirl_reading I read with a number of years ago with my book club and also didn‘t enjoy it. One thing I remember about our discussion was one woman complaining about the doctor and “he had the vapours every five minutes.” I just always imagine him on a fainting couch. 🤣 2mo
GingerAntics @Prairiegirl_reading 🤣😂🤣 I love that! He really did have the vapours constantly! Like, dude, buck up! You get all these like dead body parts and you‘re fine, but then this thing you‘ve made expects you to show him some humanity and QUEUE THE VAPOURS!!! 🙄🤣😂🤣 2mo
IriDas Sorrý about the dx. I hope she can come home soon. And, yes, Dr Frankenstein is the real monster, which was the point of both versions. Bad parenting, bad science, they all lead to bad ends, I guess. :) 2mo
GingerAntics @IriDas I think that makes the confusion between Frankenstein and Frankenstein‘s monster funnier. 2mo

I have just discovered the joys of the Netflix show Wednesday this week… so now I am reading books that remind me of Wednesday!
#MaryShelley #Frankenstein #audiobook #Wednesday

GingerAntics I read this back in 2016 for a seminar on antiheroes… but these first few chapters… I don‘t remember them at all. 2mo
IriDas Is this the same version you read? There are two. She changed quite a bit of the first part with the second version. 2mo
GingerAntics @IriDas I genuinely don‘t remember this beginning part. I mostly remember the dog sled and the monster running along side, maybe chasing him. I just have this very vivid mental image of that part. 2mo

IriDas Oh, you mean the letters to the sister? 2mo
IriDas Here‘s a good article about the two versions: https://stanforddaily.com/2018/11/29/frankenstein-and-its-transformations/ But if it‘s about remembering the sledge, it might just be what stuck in your mind the most. I‘ve read it multiple times, both versions, and I can see that being something a person would keep over the letters. 😊 2mo
GingerAntics @IriDas I remember painting this very vivid imagine in my mind of it, and over time that‘s all that has remained. It does seem like he‘s writing letters to his sister… I think. This is the first time I‘ve listened this on audio, so I‘m thinking it hits a little different. 2mo
AnnCrystal Wednesday 👏🏼🤩👍🏼 the first season was too good! Hope to one day catch the second season 📺💝. The first season was filmed in Romania and the second was filmed in Ireland. Don't know why, but I found this to be interesting. 2mo
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal I did not know any of that! They released season 2 in two parts. 🙄 The second half drops 9/3, so I‘m trying SO HARD to hold off until then to watch any of season 2. 🫰🏻🫰🏻 (edited) 2mo
AnnCrystal @GingerAntics I would do that l as well...the first part probably has some kind of cliffhanger. Please review once you do watch 😉👌🏼📺💝. 2mo
