The Haunting of Paynes Hollow
The Haunting of Paynes Hollow | Kelley Armstrong
13 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
From New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong comes a nail-biting supernatural horror about a haunted lakeside cottage and twisted family secrets. When twenty-six-year-old Samantha Paynes grandfather dies, she figures she wont even get a mention in the will. After all, she hasnt seen him in eighteen years, not since her father took his own life after being accused of murdering a child at their lakefront cottage. Her grandfather always insisted her father was innocent, despite Sam having caught him burying the childs body, his clothing streaked with blood. But when she does attend the reading of the will at the behest of her Aunt Nina, she discovers that her grandfather left her the very valuable tract of lakefront property where the family cottage sits. Theres one catch. Sam needs to stay in that cottage for a week. For her own good, really. To finally face the fact she was wrong and her father was innocent. Travelling to Paynes Hollow, where the cabin hugs the shore of Lake Ontario, Sam is faced with the realities of her childhood and the secrets kept hidden in the shadows of her memories. When her aunt goes missing a couple days into their stay, Sam begins to question everything again. Plagued by nightmares and paranoia, she begins seeing things crawling from the water and flitting through the forest, whispering to her, trying to draw her out of the cottage. Things that look suspiciously human-like. Outside the cottage, the rippling waves of the lake seem to call out to her, the promise of something even darker lurking just below their surface.

Kelley Armstrong is an auto-read for me whenever a new one comes out. This was no exception. I enjoyed the Sleepy Hollow retelling. Chilling and atmospheric, my attention was caught throughout the novel. The narrator of the audiobook did a great job. 5 stars.

KT1432 I‘ve never read her before but I got this from BOTM because the sample intrigued me. I can‘t wait to start it! I might try to get a Libby audiobook hold to listen while I read it. 4d

I love Armstrong‘s writing & her latest is great for this #SpookySeason— a reimagining of #TheLegendOfSleepyHollow! Sam‘s not returned to Paynes Hollow since she was a child who witnessed a horrible event that tore her family apart. Now, desperate for the money her inheritance will bring, she is forced to spend a month back in her family cottage. With a twisting plot, higher body count than expected & fast-pace, this one is impossible to put down!

Pretty good, but not very scary at all. The denouement and what follows it is a little bit too soft for me as a lover of hardcore horror, but I would definitely still recommend it for folks looking to explore the genre!

My stack for #JustOneMoreChapter. Ambitious, but I‘m retired, and I‘ve got plenty of time to read while watching sports. The top book I‘m halfway through, and the Elly Griffiths is a reread. (I‘ve bought most of the Galloway series used and I‘m working my way through it. It‘s just as wonderful the second time around!) Payne‘s Hollow I really want to get to. I don‘t often read horror, but branching out is good . . . @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! Enjoy!! I honestly love reading while watching Sunday afternoon football 😂 1w

I liked this dog puzzle so much more than this novel. I felt like the author made very little effort with this one. It‘s gory and violent for no reason. #BOTM

AmyG Another great puzzle. 1w

My #BOTM October box! Always love seeing what everyone chooses. I seldom read spooky or romance, but it‘s good to be open to other genres. In fact none of these choices fits in my usual “box,” but that‘s one reason I joined BOTM a couple of years ago. I pass them on to my besties too, so it all works.

AmandaBlaze I have The Haunting of Paynes Hollow from NetGalley! 3w
MittenGirlPeach @AmandaBlaze really looking forward to reading it! 2w

I was VERY pleasantly surprised to see this as a #BOTM selection today.
I didn‘t like Armstrong‘s last foray into horror, but this one sounds good so why not? Another credit burned.
I also picked up a book from one of my swap match‘s wish lists.
What did you all get?

MatchlessMarie I got this one too and I also picked Hazelthorn. I usually skip more than pick but I‘m excited about these. Also Im finally getting their born to read books forced to read emails hat. I can‘t wait to start wearing that to work 🤣 (edited) 3w
MittenGirlPeach I got the same pick + two add-ons: Wild Reverence & Kitty St Clair‘s Last Dance. 3w
Read-n-Bloom I got it too! Haven‘t received it yet but can‘t wait to get and start reading! 2w
