I didn‘t really realize it until today, but grimace is sort of a weird word to say. Try saying it a few times and see if you agree 😁 And who could forget lovable Grimace (but why did they give him that name?) of McDonald‘s fame! #weirdwordwednesday #weirdwords

Kerrbearlib Love it! 21h
dabbe Fab word. And your face actually contorts into one the more times you say it! 💜 20h

Amiable I remember looking it up once because I was wondering what Grimace was supposed to be —it said he was a taste bud?? Am I remembering that correctly? Because that‘s a super-weird cartoon character. 😄 20h
lil1inblue Grimace is such an underutilized word. But so descriptive! 16h
BookmarkTavern I love this word so much! 13h
ncsufoxes When I was little my parents took me to McDonald‘s somewhere in NJ & they had a person in a Grimace costume. Apparently I was terrified. I vaguely remember it (I was probably 3 or 4). I remember there was a Hamburgler & Ronald. My kids thinks it‘s funny when my mom tells them I was scared of Grimace. 12h
CBee @dabbe 😂😂😂 2h
CBee @Amiable that‘s news to me and if true, that‘s just…..weird 😂 2h
CBee @Amiable so apparently he was originally “Evil Grimace” and stole milkshakes. He‘s been described as a taste bud, the embodiment of a milkshake (🤷‍♀️), and just a lovable blob. I had no idea about any of this 😂 2h
CBee @ncsufoxes what a story! I mean, I can get why he might be scary though 😂 Especially if confronted with him in real life. 2h

julesG @Jari-chan We hardly ever use it these days, right? Not even "Backpfeife" for a slap in the face. I think I had to explain it to my children because we read it in a Kästner book. 23h

Cuilin 😦 I needed a trigger warning for this post lol 😑 22h
Jari-chan @julesG You're right. I know the word Backpfeife, but I guess it's a bit outdated. Even though it's such a beautiful word 😁 It's not used in Switzerland, though. 22h
CBee This is 🔥 and also I‘m going to ask my German hubby about this word! 21h
Amiable @Jari-chan @julesG My German teacher used it in class the other day when we were discussing how German words and phrases get “built.” She grew up in East Germany before the Berlin Wall came down. I think she‘s about 50. (edited) 21h

lil1inblue Ok, now I'm curious. Growing up, I always heard the term back-handed compliment - does that derive from left-handed compliment? Is it meant to be the "PC" term for it? ? 1w
Bookwomble That time when my daughter was about 6 years old and said to my mum after kissing her, "I love you grandma, but you are prickly!" Luckily mum thought it was hilarious and said she'd wax her top lip in future! ? 1w
dabbe @lil1inblue You bring up an excellent point. I tried to research and the best I could find was the “left-handed compliment“ has been around a lot longer (due to that idea of “left“ meaning “evil“), but “backhanded“ also has negative origins in the fact that it originated as a “backslap“ instead of a direct one ... it still hurts! 💛💜🧡 1w
dabbe @Bookwomble Your mum is FABUL💛OUS ... as is your daughter! 💛💜🧡 1w
CSeydel @lil1inblue Same! I‘ve never heard “left handed compliment” before, although I know left-handedness has long been associated with things being wrong or bad (eg, “sinister”, “gauche”, etc.) I suppose it‘s like how my kids‘ generation grew up only hearing “criss cross applesauce” and never … well, you know. 1w

I read the word “caprice,” and thought 💭 it sounded musical - lo and behold, it is! So, I figured I‘d include “capriccio” as well. Wasn‘t there also a car called a Caprice? Anyway, it‘s early, I‘m rambling 😂 enjoy!

peaKnit Yes, to a car caprice…I think it got uglier every remodel. 🤣 It was a police car for a bit in our area, WI. We had a caged station wagon version at probation/parole, drove like a boat! 🤣 1w

Solipsism, solipsist, solipsistic. Say those words ten times fast 😂😂 Other tidbits: solipsism is also a term for a specific philosophy, a symptom of certain mental illnesses, and apparently can become a syndrome after periods of extreme isolation. Did you know (I didn‘t) that the cashew is not a nut? It‘s the seed of a cashew apple, classified as a “drupe.” The book, “A Tree a Day,” inspired me to research this - there is a page devoted to The Cashew of Pirangi in Brazil - it‘s enormous! #naturalitsy #weirdwords #weirdwordwednesday

Amiable I did not know this! Interesting info! 3mo

CBee @Deblovestoread I didn‘t read it for three months so I just started with July - that NY “resolution” didn‘t last long 😂 3mo
CBee @peanutnine oh wow! I actually read you shouldn‘t eat cashews if you‘re allergic to nuts which is odd. And even more interesting is that you CAN eat them! Cashews are yummy. (edited) 3mo
Deblovestoread @Megabooks Sat what now? I will never look at a mushroom the same again 🤣🤣🤣 3mo

My #weirdwordwednesday pick! I remember discovering this word during a word game - maybe Words With Friends or similar - and always thought it was a bit silly sounding. This little googol mascot guy should have googly eyes, I think 😂 #weirdwords

CatLass007 Another great word! I was listening to Death Comes To Pemberley and decided to look up a word instead of just figuring out what it meant from its context. I actually should have stuck to my habit with this particular word because it was very difficult to find a real definition or even a picture. What on earth did the word jives mean in 1803? 5mo
BookmarkTavern I heard the word googolplex (10 raised to the power of a googol) first when I was in school, and that‘s how I learned about googol. 😄 5mo
See All 12 Comments
CBee @CatLass007 jives? In 1803? Hmm. I have no idea 😂😂 5mo
CBee @BookmarkTavern I should have included googolplex! 5mo
CatLass007 I‘ve heard of gewgaws but not googols. “Jives around the prisoner‘s wrists,” was the quote in the book. Shackles. 5mo
CBee @CatLass007 gotcha. What are gewgaws? 5mo
CatLass007 Gewgaws are what I would call “thingies.” I‘ve never actually looked up the definition. As usual. 5mo
CBee @CatLass007 I looked it up 😂 Couldn‘t resist. “Gewgaws:
a showy thing, especially one that is useless or worthless.”
5mo
CatLass007 Okay, so I was wrong. Thingies are useful. 5mo
CBee @CatLass007 I agree! Thingies are very useful, especially when you don‘t know what something is called. “That thingie over there” and such 😂 5mo
CatLass007 Exactly!! 5mo

This word came up in my last read (Saltwater 🙌🏻🙌🏻). It would be so fun to ride one of these! 😊
Here‘s an article about some well-known funiculars around the world: https://www.treehugger.com/fabulous-funiculars-from-around-the-globe-4863745

RaeLovesToRead I've been on funiculars! There was a small one in Scarborough. The biggest I've been on (I think) was Lake Como. Do you have them in the US? 5mo
RaeLovesToRead Ok the ones in the article are enormous! I've not been on one that big!!!!! 5mo

CBee @RaeLovesToRead we do! Not sure how many, but there‘s one a couple hours from me that I might have to check out! 5mo
TheBookHippie I‘ve been on a few and I‘ve been on the Lookout Mountain one, seen the LA one. There‘s one at our zoo it‘s a riot ! 5mo
peanutnine A funicular was mentioned in my last read as well! What are the odds! These seem so cool, I want to ride one! 5mo
ImperfectCJ The article missed this one, which is the one that taught me the word. (Until then, I just called them all trams, which is clearly wrong.): https://www.quebec-cite.com/en/businesses/funiculaire-du-vieux-quebec 5mo
Bookwormjillk I rode one in Pittsburgh. Kind of fun and scary at the same time. 5mo
CBee @TheBookHippie if you ever ever ever get back down to Chattanooga, you better let me know. I‘m like two hours from there! 5mo
CBee @peanutnine small world! I sort of thought it sounded like a body part - like part of the spine or something 😆 5mo

Today‘s #weirdwords choice could make you hungry, or make you feel ill, depending on how you feel about peas 🫛😂 #weirdwordwednesday

CatLass007 Great word! I hate canned peas but I love snow peas. 5mo

CatLass007 Good morning! 5mo
CBee @CatLass007 good morning! I grew up on canned peas but once I tried fresh, I never wanted canned again! Same with asparagus! 5mo
CatLass007 My Mom used to tell a story that I don‘t remember happening but it sounds like me. When I was in daycare we couldn‘t get up from the lunch table until we cleaned our plates. When Mom came to pick me up after she got off work, I was still sitting at the table eating my peas. With. My. Knife. One. Pea. At. A. Time.🤣 5mo
Bookwormjillk These are fresh in my garden now and my daughter can‘t get enough. I‘ll have to let her know. 5mo

CBee @CatLass007 wow, that is some serious dedication to peas 😂😂 5mo
CBee @Amiable ha! I do okay. My husband says I pronounce German fairly well which is a major feat 😂 5mo
CBee @dabbe perfect 🤩 5mo
Amiable @CBee German is way easier for me — my husband jokes that I inherited the “German gargle” from my ancestors because I can pronounce those harsh sounds much better than the French ones! 😄 5mo
CatLass007 More like serious dedication to no peas.😝😂😂 5mo
CBee @Amiable ha! The German gargle 😂😂 I‘ll have to tell hubby this 5mo
CBee @CatLass007 true. I think that was what I meant actually 😂🤪 5mo

A Ghanaian concept, the word is expanded into the proverb “se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi.”

Sankofa is the understanding that only by knowing your (personal, cultural, national) history can you know your current self, and know how to become better.

The concept feels particularly relevant right now.

#WeirdWordWednesday #WeirdWords

shortsarahrose I‘ve heard this used in meditation practices before. Like you pick something you want to get out of your practice as a sankofa, say it a few times, and then let it go. 6mo

CBee @dabbe thank you! 😊 6mo
CBee @CatLass007 you‘re very welcome, fellow amazing woman 😊 6mo
CatLass007 I just did something that I said I don‘t do because of laziness. I looked up the definition of the word “febrile.” It was just used in the book Conclave describing a “new and febrile mood.” It can mean either feverish or nervous excitement or energy. From the context, I believe it is intended to mean nervous excitement or energy. You have inspired me to start looking up the definitions of words! 6mo
CBee @CatLass007 I know that word from my nursing school days. I‘m glad I inspired you to look it up 😊👏🏻 6mo
