Joyland
Joyland | Stephen King
A STUNNING  NEW NOVEL FROM ONE OF THE BEST-SELLING AUTHORS OF ALL TIME! The #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. "I love crime, I love mysteries, and I love ghosts. That combo made Hard Case Crime the perfect venue for this book, which is one of my favorites. I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid, and for that reason, we’re going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being. Joyland will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual book." –Stephen King

The wonderful @AmyG sent me this book about a year ago and I just got around to reading it.
I loved this book. A coming of age story spent at an amusement park. I wouldn‘t consider it horror but there was a supernatural mystery and some wonderful, touching moments. A cast of unique characters made this a great read. Highly recommend.

BiblioLitten I quite like the pulpy cover! 2w
Addison_Reads Great review. I feel this is a King book often overlooked, but it's one of my favorites. 2w
Leftcoastzen I really enjoyed it! Nostalgic but not sappy about it. 2w

Tuesday morning read before work 💀 what‘s your favourite Stephen King book?

TrishB The Stand 😁 7mo

Ashley_Nicoletto It‘s so long, but houses the best characters and is worth every page. 7mo
TrishB You‘re in for a good (long) read! 7mo
WeeziesBooks Pet Sematary was one of the first books that truly scared the hell out of me and I still love it! Dolores Claiborne is a close second. 7mo
cleoh @WeeziesBooks Pet Sematary is excellent! It‘s the first book by King I read! (edited) 7mo
cleoh @ErinSueG I‘ve heard great things about that one! 7mo
cleoh @TrishB @Ashley_Nicoletto I‘ll add it to my TBR 😁 7mo
ErinSueGreads Oh it‘s totally fantastic! And some seriously beautiful writing and very spooky scenes! 7mo
KathyWheeler I loved this book and have read it several times. 7mo
ephemeralwaltz Enjoyed this one! I need to get to The Stand as well! 7mo
cleoh @KathyWheeler @ephemeralwaltz I wasn‘t too sure how I‘d feel about this one when I started it (total impulse buy) but I‘m pleasantly surprised! 7mo
cleoh @CouronneDhiver I always forget that this is by SK! Refuses to stick in my mind for some reason 😂 7mo
cleoh @ErinSueG 😱 that sounds excellent. I think I‘ll have to track down a copy sooner rather than later! 7mo
KathyWheeler I just realized I never answered the question about the favorite SK book. I love The Stand, Doctor Sleep, 12/22/63 , and the Dark Tower series. 7mo
cleoh @KathyWheeler ooh 12/22/63 has been on my TBR for such a long time! Thoughts on the mini series adaptation?? 7mo
KathyWheeler @cleoh They changed some things and made one character more important than he was in the book, but I think it was necessary because for those events in the book there‘s a lot of internal narration. I liked the miniseries a lot. 7mo
CouronneDhiver 👋🏽 hi! where have you been hiding lately? 6mo
cleoh @CouronneDhiver hi! Nowhere really, I‘ve been super busy with work and the holidays so haven‘t read much 😓 thanks for checking in! 😘 6mo

Day 29: Chills and Thrills—One might argue that some of my reading could be considered borderline thriller/action-adventure. Mostly, though, I prefer straight-up mystery; and, I definitely steer away from horror. I was highly skeptical when someone headed me toward Stephen King's Joyland. I'm so glad they did! It won an elusive 4-star review from me! #RiotGrams #StingyWithStars #ChillAndThrills #NoGoreTolerance

P is for Pillsbury, as in Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. Being raised by a single mom had a big impact on King, and the way he writes relationships between young men and their mothers in his novels, I can only assume comes from a personal place. For example, the single mother with her two kids in Joyland always made me think of King's mother raising 2 boys during a time when society was much less accepting of single moms.
#KingAtoZ @GarthRanzz

AmyG Very good. 1y
GarthRanzz I love this one because I can personally relate to it. I was raised with my little brother by a single, working mom. Not quite in the same time period but it still was a different way of life than most. Another reason for my affinity with King. 1y

Not sure what I was expecting from this book, but certainly wasn't what I got. Not a horror fan so only previously read 1 of his books, [11.22.63], which I loved. This one wasn't a horror either but was a truly cracking read, although ending was sad! Must try to read more by Stephen King because he does know how to write a great story, with great characters. Any recommendations gratefully received.

RachelO Happy Birthday! I've never read Stephen King, because until Litsy I thought of him as a horror writer. I'm going to have to give one of these a go sometime. 2y
Andrew65 @RachelO Thanks 😊 Most Definitely, I don't read horror but these two books are as far away from horror as you could get. Quite different in outlook, this one is short, the other is long. Both set in the past, both have a love dimension in and this one is strongly about relationships. Loved the main character. I'd love a sequel to find out more about his life now. The carnival dimension was very good too. Only 288 pages so a quick read. 2y
RachelO Thanks - this sounds like a good one to start with then. 2y

TricksyTails Seconding @Betty 's recommendation for The Green Mile. Also, if you like detective stories/thrillers, his Bill Hodges Trilogy is fantastic. 2y
Andrew65 @TricksyTails That's good to hear about Mr Mercedes as I already own the first one in the series. Thanks for the recommendation. 😊 2y
TricksyTails Hope you enjoy! King may be known as the horror writer, but he really can write it all. His strength is his characters. His stories may have a "horror" aspect but his characters are what hooks you and brings you back to him again and again. Even if you don't like horror, give one of those books a try sometime. You might be surprised how much you enjoy it. ? 2y
Andrew65 @TricksyTails I will certainly be giving one of them a try soon as have discovered how much I enjoy his writing and characters. 2y

My father had taught me - mostly by example - that if a man wanted to be in charge of his life, he had to be in charge of his problems.

TricksyTails So happy you're enjoying it! 😁 2y
Andrew65 @TricksyTails Only my second ever Stephen King after 11.22.63 which is a personal favourite. He certainly knows how to write a cracking story based on these two. 2y

Started reading Joyland by Stephen King, only my second Stephen King book after 11.22.63. An intriguing start so far.

TricksyTails I love Joyland! 💛❤️💜Can't wait for your thoughts. 2y
Cathythoughts I have Joyland lined up on the TBR 2y
Andrew65 @TricksyTails This one has me intrigued, not a book I would normally pick up from the cover but have long wanted to try another Stephen King book. The opening section of the book (first 30 odd pages) definitely got me hooked and wanting to find out where this one is heading. @Cathythoughts 2y

TricksyTails It's funny you say that because it happens to not be a "normal" King book just like 11/22/63 isn't the kind of story you'd expect from King. I hope you like it. 2y
AmyG I liked this book alot. 2y
Bluebird Great book! I hope you enjoy it! 2y

Whatever you this think is I bet you're wrong. A surprising and touching thriller that is light on the supernatural and thick with character and mystery. Eat your heart out, Paul Sheldon. Subtle but effective books like this remind us why King is still the king. #SummerReads #ComingOfAgeTale

SuzanneMadron And the cover looks like a Meat Loaf album cover. :) 1y
Skyrimir Great pics! Enjoyed this book. 4mo

This was a really fun read. Books about the carnival life are an instant favourite with me. There was also the added fun of a murder mystery, who doesn't love a bit of murder 😏. Stephen King always makes me want food, and I found myself wanting to experience real carny life and food 🍿🌭 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Scotchtaped to the underside of the stairs, where there had once been a sign proclaiming that the smoking lamp was always lit, I saw a sheet of paper with a single typed line in print so small I had to lean close and stand on tiptoe in order to read it:
Professor Nako now teaches at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Well, why not?
Why the fuck not?
