Joyland
Joyland | Stephen King
A STUNNING NEW NOVEL FROM ONE OF THE BEST-SELLING AUTHORS OF ALL TIME! The #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. "I love crime, I love mysteries, and I love ghosts. That combo made Hard Case Crime the perfect venue for this book, which is one of my favorites. I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid, and for that reason, were going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being. Joyland will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual book."Stephen King

My first Stephen King novel and I was not disappointed!! (Not that I thought I would be). A light who-dun-it with suspense, love, emotion, and a perfect Coney Island feeling amusement park set in the 70s. A little bit of scare but not nearly as much as I thought it would have considering the author. #stephenking #joyland #photography #amusementpark #ferriswheel #horrorhouse #funhouse

Knocked out my #bookspin tonight. I was surprised by the amount of heart King put into this crime story, which also became a bit of a bildungsroman and tearjerker. The crime, committed before the book opens, is pure King though: murder on a haunted house ride in an amusement park. Nice job, Mr. King. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My tentative list for #roll100 even though it‘s already had its first roll, but no matter!

#24 - Joyland by Stephen King (super needed especially since I live in North Carolina)

#49 - Confessions by Kanae Monaco (been on my TBR list forever, and I‘ve heard great things)

✌🏻

tokorowilliamwallace Yay! This makes me happy you are doing it! Are you going to try to complete some bingos on the board, too, or just read your bookspin picks? 13mo

Good easy read. More of a coming of age book… never a bad thing- it‘s not always horror with King. Check it out!

5⭐️

This is my 3rd Stephen King book and second hard cases book by him. Other than his uncomfortable need to include sexual thoughts and situations at times in his stories, I‘m truly coming to really loving his writing style. I never thought I‘d say King wrote one of the most wholesome scenes I‘ve read in a long time!

1. Not very often. I almost always make picks based on recommendations & reviews, but I admit to having a weakness for books with "book" or "library" in the title. ?

2. The tagged book was a recent read, and perfect for the end of summer.

A good end of summer read. The theme park of Joyland was lovingly detailed, and it was a bittersweet coming-of-age story. #fiction #mystery

I mostly chose this one for the cover image, I just love that pulp art style. While I got the story of ghosts and the search for a serial killer‘s identity I expected, I surprisingly didn‘t find this to be a scary/spooky/thriller at all. Emotionally it was all over the map for me, but all in all a diverting read.

Another nearly perfect Stephen King.

Our middle-aged narrator, Devin, remembers the year he was 21, working at a seaside amusement park with an unsolved murder and a possibly haunted funhouse, befriending the locals (including a kid who shines!) and figuring out his life.

I loved the nostalgia, the mystery, the spookiness, and, as is usually the case with King‘s books, the fantastic characters. Literally, all the feels. 🖤

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Still love it on the second reading (almost 5 years between). Joyland brought me back to King after The Shining—read in my teens—scared me away from him.

A freaky thing happened this morning. I was reading w/my ears on my iPad when, suddenly, it started playing on my phone as well. I didn't touch the phone. It just started playing. WTH?! I'm not a believer in the paranormal, but isn't it interesting that it happened with this book? 😲

My first Stephen King novel and I‘m sorry to say I wasn‘t crazy about it. Lacked the suspense and horror I was expecting from King. Maybe this isn‘t a typical Stephen King novel and not great for first timers! But besides that, it was entertaining enough though, and I adored the sweet relationship between the narrator and Mike. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Avanders Definitely not typical king 😉 Maybe try The Shining? 3y

Yep, reading my first Stephen King novel. Canobie Lake, an old school amusement park my husband and I go to in the summers, was the inspiration for this novel, which peaked my interest. So far I‘m a quarter of the way through and still waiting for something to happen. The suspense is killing me!

Everyone knows SK can write great horror. But he is also amazing at creating a sense of nostalgia in some of his books and this is a great example. There is a little mystery here, a hint of a ghost story, but mostly you're taken back to an old school amusement park in the 1970s and a bittersweet coming of age story.

The retro-pulp cover art on this paperback is fab but maybe a little misleading. While it was fun to be whisked away into the world of a 1970‘s coastal carnival and the light mystery/crime/horror elements, the central story is of a young man coming of age and the kinds of love and loss people really face.🤴❤️

The wonderful @AmyG sent me this book about a year ago and I just got around to reading it.
I loved this book. A coming of age story spent at an amusement park. I wouldn‘t consider it horror but there was a supernatural mystery and some wonderful, touching moments. A cast of unique characters made this a great read. Highly recommend.

cleoh @KathyWheeler ooh 12/22/63 has been on my TBR for such a long time! Thoughts on the mini series adaptation?? 4y
KathyWheeler @cleoh They changed some things and made one character more important than he was in the book, but I think it was necessary because for those events in the book there‘s a lot of internal narration. I liked the miniseries a lot. 4y
