Pretty much read this great little book in one day , again I can‘t believe it has such a low rating on this app ! It‘s an extraordinary book ! So full of human observations , behaviours and wisdom. I adored it and can‘t wait to dive into the whole series !

jlhammar I love Strout‘s Lucy books so much. I still have Lucy by the Sea waiting. Hope to get to it soon. 7d

Sarah Payne the day she told us to go to the page without judgement , reminded us that we never knew, and would never know, what it would be like to understand another person fully. I see more and more she had to tell us that.
We think we always think.what is it about someone that makes us despise that person? That makes us feel superior? πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

First bookfinished.what a corker,we all know now of the evils of the Irish nuns and hiding sadistic behaviour behind a cloak of supposedly christian morals. Can‘t believe it that the last Magdalen laundry only closed down in 1996!! We know also that many local residents in these areas turned a blind eye , unlike furlough our hero in this short novella. Perhaps turning a blind eye in fear or simply not wanting to know.what would you have done ?

I loved Harold fry but sadly I didn‘t gel with miserable Maureen , even though she has just cause to be so angry one of the seven stages of grief. Anyway it started well but dragged alittle towards the end for me. It‘s a quick easy read can be done in one sitting . I met the author Rachel Joyce A few years ago at a book event, super lovely lady.

jlhammar I‘ve got this audiobook waiting. I really liked Harold, but I liked the second book with Queenie even more. 4w

#persephoneclub finished last night , I really enjoyed it , moments of utter sadness and simple misunderstandings, I can see how it would have been radical for the time . Out of the 3 persephones I‘d rate this as no3 , no 1 being highwages - Dorothy Whipple is a genius a lot of authors compared to Austen she is the real deal I think , and no2 to bed with grand music the other also wrote little boy lost which is equally a great read.what‘s next ?😊

jlhammar Glad you enjoyed it. I'm definitely going to have to order myself a Whipple to try eventually. Looking forward to our April read 4w

Apart from the interview style of text this book had absolutely nothing in common with Daisy Jones and the six . It started well but by about 190 odd pages i just found it a drag , such a shame it could have been so so much better. There‘s no depth of romance or chemistry or sexual tension between Opal and nev, no depth or description to their music , so quite a disappointing read for me personally and abit of a slog.

Lesanne I felt the same way, found it tough to get through, honestly. 1mo

It must be devastating to know your born into the wrong body a simple slip of a chromosome. We all forget sometimes that everyone is simply human , it‘s very sad that here in the uk trans rights have turned into an argument fuelled by misogyny, and sexual predators jumping on to the bandwagon to gain access to female safe spaces. However I don‘t want to be called a cis woman I‘m a woman,be who you want to be & don‘t isolate or harass any group

Excellent historical fiction.Found the true info and essay at the back of my special edition fascinatingWhat Alfonso inflicted on his own sister and her lover ! So we can deduce from that act that he wasn‘t a kind man! The fate of her sister Isabella murdered & her cousin both murdered by husbands , Lucrezia younger brother being one. So much crime and hatred towards women, consequence of a forced arranged marriage and raising boys as superiors!

Brilliant Simply brilliant , Someone from a distance is hailed as Dorothy Whipples best and most popular novel, which I also devoured. However high wages is even better in my opinion. What wonderful characters, what a wonderful plot - it just ended far too soon. Many authors are compared to Jane Austen but in Whipples case it is spot on her portrayal of people is very Austenrsque.1st read of β€˜23 & ahard act to follow, a great reading year ahead 🀞
