1. I don‘t read much horror.
2. 👮🕵️‍♂️🌂💼🩸🗡🗝🖊🚨⚰️🧐
3. I like mysteries because, while there are usually recognizable characters and tropes, the story can still go in many different directions and take place nearly anywhere.
4. If it‘s a true impulse read, interesting cover art would be more intriguing.

I decided to finish my collection of the brown Stephen King covers. Carrie was my last hold out.

I found it Used on GoodWillBooks Dot Com … and while I was there I bought the other two.

Love Stephen King! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My first #ReadKing book is complete! This is a reread for me and a very low pick. Probably just above the "meh" stage. I've always liked this story and it's a quick read but there are just So. Many. Words! That's King for you though ?‍♀️

The colours in this edition just go great with this picture and the fire/water contrast are perfect!

I've officially made it official so now I have to do it! 🤣

I've been wanting to do this for years and got in the LosersClub when it started but I can't stick to monthly reads and only made it to The Shining. So I'm at it again and making it a real challenge! Every book in the King catalog, either by pub date or in any specific order. I start Jan 1 and go until I'm done! My reward for reading a book? Buying the next one! #ReadKing

FantasyChick If anyone wants to join in, I've made a StoryGraph challenge to keep me honest 🤣 Each prompt is a different book. No check ins, no rewards, just the joy of getting through this massive list! https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/9ebdabd9-e867-4019-b94c-72b7c89... 6mo

Super excited!! I've decided that 2022 (maybe a bit earlier if I get antsy) is going to start #KingReads I want to go through all his books in order and buy as I go so by the time they are all read I will have a complete collection 😍 I have no plans to go with certain editions but this Halloween edition of Carrie is just....😍😍😍

I have tried the #LosersClub but my rogue reading doesn't allow for scheduling 🤣

Feels like it took me forever to get through Carrie even though it‘s such a short book. Honestly, I went into it without knowing anything about it (I‘ve never seen the movies) and I wasn‘t sure what to expect. This is only the 3rd King book I‘ve read so far and I‘m anxious to keep diving into his writing.

Day 21 of #21DaysofHorror
My Stephen King origin story has two different timelines. For as long as I can remember I have loved King in theory. I was raised on the movies & made for tv adaptations of his works. We are living in a second golden age of King adaptations. The first occurred in the late 80s-early 90s with such works as the Children of the Corn, Cat's Eye, Sometimes They Come Back, Dead Zone etc, . As far as his books go, I recall👇

vivastory reading a few of his stories here & there but it was a little over 5 years ago when I sat down & read one. It was the Cycle of the Werewolf. Honestly what I remember most about it was the Bernie Wrightson illustrations & wondering if Silver Bullet would be worth watching. Fast forward 6 months later when I read Carrie & everything changed. Although I had read Dracula several months prior, Stoker's inclusion in his classic novel of journal entries 8mo
vivastory & shipping manifests was still fresh in mind. Now I see King using the same format in his debut novel & would discover in subsequent books that King has a fondness for the epistolary format. Plus, the ending of it was just absolute no holds barred chaos. Several years later, & 30 books into King's catalog, this remains my go to book to recommend to people who want to try Stephen King for the first time. (edited) 8mo
vivastory It's no longer my favorite book by him. It's not even in my top 10, but it literally changed my life. Thanks to everyone who joined me on this macabre & fun journey over the past 3 weeks! A big thanks to @reggie for joining in & posting his favorites as well! This has been a real blast! 8mo

ValerieAndBooks I was a big SK fan through HS and college—- basically all the 1980s for me. But then his books started getting bigger and that was about when I was married with kids. Now that I‘m basically an empty nester (and have a son who is a fan), have been reading him again. 8mo
vivastory @ValerieAndBooks That's wonderful that you & your son can have that experience! A few weeks ago when I dropped off groceries for my grandpa he tried to pass me his copy of Billy Summers since he'd just finished it. I already own it, so I declined, but we had a nice conversation about King's books. 8mo
Bookzombie Awesome post! I‘m not sure how many I have read now. I had been reading them randomly over the years, but I started trying to read them in order of publication a while ago, so I need to get back to it. 8mo

#LittensDressedInBlood Today's prompt is Revenge

There is not another book that I can think of that deals with revenge on such a massive scale. Bullied, teased, tormented, Carrie White just wants to fit in. And just when it seems that might be happening... a bucket full of pig's blood on prom night undoes her dreams. “They're all going to laugh at you“ turns into screams.

i wish i could go back in time and experience this book for the first time again. it was so horrifyingly beautiful. it was gory and dark, but strangely poetic and with relatable characters. the terrifying way that it ends is so predictable, but it still shakes you to your core.

Finished reading this before work this morning. Stephen King‘s first published novel. Some of the writing was dated of course, but overall this book was different than I expected. His style of providing character thoughts within the narrative took me a little getting used to. By the end, I was hooked and invested in this story. 4⭐️

I wondered while reading this if King was bullied in high school, his vision for retaliation is deadly. 😅 I like reading about cults and religious fanatics so any parts with Carrie's mother I enjoyed. As my first King while I enjoyed his writing I wasn't blown away. Maybe its because I already knew the story, or maybe it was just his first book and he hadn't honed his craft yet. I did find it hard to put down though. #bookreview

💛💛💛💛 I feel like most people know the story of Carrie without reading the book necessarily, and I enjoyed reading King‘s first novel! I would say it‘s a bit of a moralistic story aside from the horror in the sense of how we treat other people and the consequences (although pretty drastic in terms of this story!) of being unkind.

3 stars so-so. I saw the movie years ago, and I loved the movie. I thought the movie was better than the bookm I did like getting Carrie's background more in the book, but the book was a lot of other people telling her story, not her. I liked to hear Carrie tell it, not people I didn't care about. Also it was repetitive. Someone would say they saw her do something then she would say the same thing. Can't really blame Carrie for what she did.

Re-read - first read this a decade ago. Still feel like it‘s one of the few King books where the movie (the original anyway) is better. But this audiobook version with Sissy Spacek narrating gives best of both worlds.

Apostcardlife Haven't read it, but just curious -- language used by characters, like the mother, or just by the author narration? 1y
ElleSkel @Apostcardlife So I read a lot of horror and language like swearing etc doesn‘t bother me at all. What I meant here was that because it is a 40yr old book some of the descriptions and things used are just no longer ok and made me cringe. Ex. “She looked at him from the floor, her lip puffed to negroid size...” at the time I suppose that was considered fine but it was tough to look beyond that kind of language throughout. It‘s just dated. 1y
ElleSkel @Apostcardlife (ran out of characters) there are also references to minstrel shows and how something was funny because the person had the features of a negro. While it makes me mad I also understand that only 10 or so years prior to Carrie minstrel shows were still considered ok and people used the word negroid freely. The story was great but these issues of language at that time were definitely distracting. 1y

I love SK, have seen different versions of Carrie as a movie but this was my first time reading the book!

In case you haven‘t heard of it yet (how?) Carrie is an unpopular high school student with an over-the-top religious and controlling mother.

She never dreamed of going to prom, but when asked, she makes the leap to attend and go against her mother‘s orders.

A night of pure horror lies ahead, after a “harmless” yet disgusting prank.

Not really scary but I thoroughly enjoyed it and listened through it in a day.

Kids can definitely be cruel and an abusive mother is not helpful. I really sympathized with Carrie and was glad she got to finally express herself in the end (even if she killed a few people). Kinda shows the merits of therapy imo.
