Two Women In One | Nawal El Saadawi

My first book finished for #foodandlit 🙂🇪🇬

I loved this novel about a female medical student in Cairo and the difficulty she has living in the patriarchal world. The writing and translation were both incredible and this was short, emotional and incredibly evocative. Having said that, it was hard not to continually compare it to Woman At Point Zero which I did prefer.

I already loved Natalie Haynes‘ novels but this was even more perfect. These essays on several famous women‘s roles in Greek myth is clearly written by a formidable expert, but also manages to be funny, thought provoking and sometimes very emotional. As much as what I learned from it, I loved the questions it made me ask about stories I thought I knew so well. Would recommend to anyone with any level of Greek knowledge

Tamra This has been on my TBR for quite awhile! I just haven‘t taken the plunge to buy it and I wouldn‘t want a library deadline with this kind of book. 6d

I loved this book SO much. Partly because it was exactly what I needed after My Dark Vanessa, but this was perfectly well written, funny, subtly observed, relatable, just all round an easy to read but still literary marvel. Very short but I appreciated it like a small perfect dessert. If you ever want a palette cleanser after reading something heavy this was perfect

Thank you @LapReader for this #nywd2022 rec! @monalyisha

Hard to review. This book is clearly incredible, important and beautifully written, but I also can‘t say I ‘enjoyed‘ reading it. I like dark books but… wow. Having said that, the ending which I won‘t spoil was simple and cathartic enough that I‘d say it made it worth it. Now time to go read something very light and frothy with absolutely no important themes.

monalyisha Oof! It sounds like you can be proud of yourself for having consumed “L”iterature…and that the author can be proud for having created something so crafted and of such substance. Now, something sweet! 📖✨🍬 2w

Night Film: A Novel | Marisha Pessl

I can‘t remember the last time I loved a book this much. Very odd and probably not for everyone, with its lack of answers particularly at the end, but this was everything I‘ve ever wanted horror to be. Clever but not pretentious, entertaining, eerie, desperately mysterious. I‘ll be rereading this a lot of times I think.

puzzledbooks Loved this book. Still searching for something quite like it! 2w
Reggie I totally think that guy killed those kids. When the main character talks to his lady friend on the force and she says a saying that the director always said. It made me think she was in his pocket and had a habit of making stuff go away. 2w
vivastory This is one of my favorite books. I was obsessed with it when I read it. I'd love to rereead it but at the same time I have such a vivid memory of reading it I worry about it not standing up again 2w

Such a fun horror novel. Not my favourite by Grady Hendrix but I had a great time reading it. I thought Kris was a great main character and I loved the worldbuilding and the way the horror built up was great. The music industry doesn‘t come off well - I‘m sure more than a few musicians would say they signed their souls away in the contracts too

This took me a LONG time to get into and by the time I did, quite a lot of the book had gone by. Maybe I was convinced to read something that isn‘t very my taste by the hype but I found the writing quite middle of the road and it‘s tweeness and cuteness felt quite forced. I did like the ending but I don‘t know how far that rescued it.

On balance I liked this - it was certainly original and a bold choice to write what seemed like the first half of one book and then the second half of a completely different book. I enjoyed having things left up to me to decode, I found the level of pretentiousness appropriate to the setting so I minded that less than some people.

Continued in comment

Emilymdxn I will say, though, that I don‘t think this writer has any idea what English people speaking sounds like and the dialogue of the English characters was painful to read. I could never work out if that was part of a statement it was making and it was MEANT to be unrealistic, or if the writer thinks any grownups have ever seriously called a penis a willy…? Like was that part of the unrealisable narration? It really wrecked my immersion 3w
Ruthiella I think the pretentious writings and dialogue was intentional. Each part of the book destroys the reader‘s trust in the narrative. 3w

A really beautiful book that made me quite emotional reading in bed on the morning of New Year‘s Day. This was a gift I got at my parents house after a difficult Christmas mourning my grandad and sorting stuff out on behalf of my grandma. This was so gorgeously illustrated, so kind and simple, and it made me quite teary. A beautiful book of simple Buddhist illustrations about two friends

Such a perfect novel that I read it in one sitting, in under two hours, in the middle of the night. I‘m not normally this breathless in my praise of books but this undiscovered de Beauvoir novel made me hold my breath and feel actual pain in my chest reading in a way I haven‘t since I was a teenager. This barely fictionalised story of the life of a friend she was inseparable from and what Simone/Sylvia watched happen to her was just incredible

I‘m cautious around the rhetoric of ‘new year new me‘ - I always seem to end up being the same person? But I have had a slumpy December due to personal things going on and I want to take the new year as an opportunity to live in a way that‘ll make me happier. I‘ve actually done 4 workouts while home for Christmas which is a turn up!

Gentle negotiable goals:
- Work out twice a week
- Eat intuitively
- Read as much as I can

Dark and surreal but absolutely wonderful, this was a shocking but pretty perfect novel. I worried I wouldn‘t be able to relate to it as a novel about motherhood when I‘m not a parent, but the writing was so evocative and the perfect mix of relatable and twistedly odd that I empathised enough but never felt bored. Heartbroken to read about the death of Joan Didion. One of my absolute all time favourite writers and one of the best journalists who ever lived. I‘ll miss her so much, truly one of the greats. Blindingly original - it‘s so special to me when a book genuinely doesn‘t remind me of anything else I‘ve read. Very different from anything I‘d normally read but this really did win me over! Five working class older women take a trip to Paris together and motivate each other to try and really be happy rather than settling for what they‘ve had all their lives. This was cute and I liked it, particularly the relatable teen pretentiousness that was EXACTLY what I was like and the waxing lyrical about the strand bookstore. I will say, though, that this is a clear example of the adaptation being better than the book - the show felt more focused as well as deeper and more magical, and I felt like the ‘dares‘ built more to a more meaningful conclusion with better atmosphere in the show.

I read this quickly as part of preparing for an intro to Shakespeare class I‘m teaching as a weekend side hustle. I can see why it would work for a complete beginner, with eloquent concise summaries of most of the plays including some obscure ones. But I found myself rolling my eyes a lot at very definitive statements about what Shakespeare meant or wanted with particular decisions like… what‘s your source on that mate.

I discovered when I saw the prompt for today‘s #festivephotochallenge that not only have I never read a book with a stocking in it that I recall, I also don‘t own any stockings Christmassy or otherwise. So here‘s a book of festive short stories that I considered getting but I‘ve definitely spent enough on festive reads for this year haha. Maybe next year.

Well pals my covid booster shot has absolutely floored me - not in a way where there‘s anything to worry about I just feel very gross. Curled up in bed with some gorgeous parallel translation Russian fairy story poetry to distract myself from the dizziness and nausea. Seriously, every time I get a vaccine it makes me feel like I‘ve got the worlds worst hangover.

Russian poetry is gorgeous for winter nights with rain outside tho

vivastory Hope you recover quickly 1mo
Ruthiella My booster also made me feel icky for a couple of days. Hope you feel better soon! 1mo

A really wonderful, and very varied, book of Christmas stories by a great selection of authors. With so many different stories I was never going to love every single one but as a collection as a whole it was very very good. I particularly appreciated the mix of more realistic and more magical stories and the inclusion of sadder toned stories like the Langston Hughes. The absolute standout for me was Angela Carter‘s.

I did not actually know this classic horror was set during Christmas but it was a welcome surprise for #wintergames2021! Yes, this was a very by the books haunted house story and it didn‘t redefine anything for the genre, but it was delightfully creepy and very well done. I was completely absorbed and it made walking home alone from my booster shot in the dark very creepy.

Unfortunately the thing I‘m enjoying most about the princess switch 3 is the many letterboxd reviews about how ridiculous it is. Like the first two were bad in a fun way but this is… where did the budget even go? Who wrote this? The guy from crazy rich asians is trying so hard but who seriously pitched a Netflix holiday movie with mission impossible lasers?

Immensely lucky to have got my covid booster vaccine today! As a 25yo who works from home with no healthy conditions, I was a bit surprised to be eligible, but I‘m not gonna turn down a vaccine. It‘s a blessing to get before Christmas and seeing my family.

On the downside… I feel absolutely gross. Very nauseous and headaches and like I have a terrible hangover. Time to read and watch Christmas movies all night.

AmyG I think, with omicron, the gov‘t wants everyone “boostered”. I feel lousy for a day. So relax and feel better. 👊🏻 1mo

The Cruel Prince | Holly Black

So I hear about santas little helpers and my brain goes elves. My brain says elves and I think Holly Black. Her Tithe books were so huge for me in my preteen years and even though I barely read YA anymore I read this whole series and I loved it so much.

Having said that, I don‘t think these elves would do a good job helping Father Christmas.

A Christmas tree for the contest and a holiday tradition both! Trafalgar Square all lit up with the Christmas market and a trip to the national gallery after work with a friend.
