It took me a long time to get round to the second one in this series but in so glad I did! I don‘t think anything other than Scream has ever managed to be a slasher that comments on slashers, gets a few laughs and also is a genuine good example of the genre and a love letter to the classics this well.

I love the Native American heroine too - there aren‘t enough good books with native MCs in horror and this is so well written

This was such a lush and gorgeous fantasy read - it managed to be both very classically fairytale-ish and also really original which was so cool. It felt quite YA at times, which isn‘t a criticism as much as a thing I just happen not to like, but also very violent at times. I think when I was a teenager I‘d have been absolutely obsessed with this.

I finally got to this YEARS after buying it on a friend‘s recommendation. I found it really compelling and it kept me turning the pages, but every time I stopped to think about it I was thinking ‘wow I don‘t want that‘. I think it‘s a very well-done historical romance but I think I have very different fantasies from Claire and Diana both!

This was SUCH an adorable romance and it made me giggle and kick my feet with cuteness about a lovely sapphic couple with a gorgeous healthy dynamic. It even made me kind of a bit care about football, which isn‘t easy to do. Was there piles of plot and conflict? Not really, I can‘t say the plot was mega special, but I enjoyed being there so much I didn‘t mind. It was like the best of fan fiction in those ways.

I‘m trying so hard to get through some kindle backlog in 2024! This was weird and while I usually love weird I don‘t know how on board I was for this. It‘s off the tbr though and I‘m proud I got to the end.

I have absolutely loved my midwinter lord of the rings reread! I‘m getting ready for a module on imagined medieval landscapes for my masters and I‘m hoping to submit an abstract to a conference about the Lord of the rings so I had to spend Christmas rereading it all 🥰

I haven‘t been super festive the last couple of days for #wintergames because grad school reading has been dragging me away, but I have finally finished going through this long Italian poem in parallel translation for my paper! It‘s a lot of readathon hours for sure, and super relevant for my essay, so I can‘t complain too much.

I really enjoyed our #snowangels #wintergames buddy read! This was so divinely creepy and the idea of Christmas music playing in July when you aren‘t expecting to show the wraith is coming is absolutely chilling. Having said that, I found the scary bits more convincing than the human emotional bits, but eh it‘s a horror that was good at being a horror so I can‘t hold it against it too much.

Believe it or not I‘ve read three books in the last couple of weeks in which a woman agreed to fake date a man she barely knows for his family at Christmas and then falls for his beautiful queer sister. This was the second best of the three of them I reckon? A little too silly at times but also genuinely funny and imaginative. I had a great time and felt very immersed

I enjoyed this a lot! I read a lot about education admissions for my job and this was more readable and enjoyable by half than all of them - really good both as a true crime story of a fraud and a commentary on the state of college admissions at the moment.

For #decemberdreams and ice skating my brain went right to this booktok romance classic. Did this have much plot? No. Did I like the characters? Not loads. Did the spicy bits do much for me? I read this apocalypse novel thinking it would be good for #wintergames word search (and it absolutely was) but the writing was very clunky. The premise was fine I love a good old school horror movie end of the world, but there was a lot of telling not showing and the characters were pretty much four masculine blokes and a hot woman who never said anything

This was sweet and I wanted to like it but I couldn‘t quite do it. Characters made very big decisions very quickly, decades-old grief and mental health problems had turning points after single conversations, and people who‘ve had two conversations are planning lives together without discussing being in a relationship at all?

Also it‘s petty but the narrator kept mispronouncing Keswick and it grated so much, but the author couldn‘t have foreseen

This was a good book that I definitely enjoyed reading- maybe the reviews sold me a more surreal story than we ended up getting, but I can‘t really say I‘m disappointed. It was very atmospheric and the ending was a great pay off which is rare in horror novels.

This was great fun and I‘m glad I found it through kindle unlimited. I‘m all for more plus size representation in rom coms, and I found Christmas Notch a suitably fun and bizarre town to spend time in. Not flawless but I had a good time.

I really love silly queer holiday rom coms, but unfortunately this book just delivered all of it really badly. It‘s partly my taste and me struggling to enjoy British rom coms that are all too sweet and twee, but the prose was bad, none of the characters had much reason for doing anything, the twists weren‘t twists and everyone spoke in that annoying therapy language speak. Just a lot of people declaring why they do things rather than doing much.

My favourite holiday song is Tis The Damn Season from Taylor Swift‘s Evermore and I was so happy to see it discussed in detail in the tagged book I read this week. I was already in love with the book when a debate about Taylor swift‘s best album arrived and I loved it even more!

This was a painful but pretty perfect read. The ways the stories blended and came together and you saw the ending coming but didn‘t want to believe it for so long was really, really powerful. One of my favourite Indian novels of the last few years and I can‘t believe I let it sit on my tbr for so long!
