Carrie | Stephen King
NEWLY ADAPTED FOR THE BIG SCREEN, STARRING CHLOE GRACE MORETZ AND JULIANNE MOORE.COMING TO MOVIE THEATERS EVERYWHERE OCTOBER 2013.Stephen King's legendary debut novel about a teenage outcast and the revenge she enacts on her classmates.Carrie White may have been unfashionable and unpopular, but she had a gift. Carrie could make things move by concentrating on them. A candle would fall. A door would lock. This was her power and her sin. Then, an act of kindness, as spontaneous as the vicious taunts of her classmates, offered Carrie a chance to be normal and go to her senior prom. But another act--of ferocious cruelty--turned her gift into a weapon of horror and destruction that her classmates would never forget

It was interesting reading this one again. I think the story‘s structure is very messy — switching between different POVs and news clippings, book excerpts, and court transcripts — but the characters are some of King‘s best, and this ends up remaining one of his most emotional and angry books.

Stephen King walked around Bangors cemetery and often got his names for some of his characters from the tombstones he would walk by. This grave was where he got the name for his famous work, “Carrie.” I got a picture of it when we went up to Maine recently and it‘s perfect for todays #scarathlon prompt!
#blackcatcrew 🐈‍⬛

BkClubCare Is it “Carrie H.” ? 4mo
TheQuietQuill I think it‘s Carrie M. He got the first name from this tomb for the book 📚 @BkClubCare 4mo
BkClubCare @TheQuietQuill - I just couldn‘t read the initial. Just curious — was the headstone marked with a sign that it inspired King‘s book?! (edited) 4mo

TheQuietQuill So we went on a tour in Maine of Stephen king and it was mentioned, I then did some research and typed in the coordinates to the exact tomb and that‘s where it led to. Pretty cool! If you‘re ever in the area I‘d check it out, it was a search for sure haha! @BkClubCare 4mo
BkClubCare I have relatives in Maine and would LOVE to visit. We don‘t usually go that far north; they live in Portland and Augusta. But would SO love to visit! (My first name is Carrie so that is one reason I was so curious… yep, my last name starts with an H) 4mo
BkClubCare @TheQuietQuill - typed in the coordinates!! So cool. 4mo
TheQuietQuill Woah that‘s awesome! I believe from Portland, Bangor was about three hours more of a drive. We stayed in Acadia and traveled to Bangor just for Stephens Kings mansion and the graveyard 😆 @BkClubCare 4mo

I can‘t seem to download my photo. I listened to the audiobook and Sissy Spacek does a great job at narrating. I really enjoyed the introduction by Stephen King and the book itself. It wasn‘t frightening, I just found it so sad.

JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m just re-listening to SK‘s introduction again and his “Cheerio Casserole” is a riot. He fried cheerios and peanut butter in Wesson oil in college. 6mo

One of Kings MOST iconic books IMO. Although I think the movies give Carrie a bit more spice, whereas the book had her very passive even after the blood event🩸🩸

I enjoyed this classic horror novel. It is interesting to compare earlier SK writing to his current novels. I actually have preferred his newer works in writing style, which has notably evolved over time.

CSeydel Definitely agree that while Carrie is a classic, I appreciate how his voice matured in later books! 10mo

The ultimate “town misfit gets revenge” story, King‘s first published novel came out with a bang. I first read this as a teenager and viewed Carrie as a tragic anti-hero - almost rooting for her revenge. As an adult, I found this to be a more emotional read about the far-reaching impact of our worst teenage impulses, and what could have happened for Carrie had one adult stepped in. In the end, Carrie is a cautionary tale still relevant today. 4⭐️

Pikathulhu I had the exact same change in perspective reading this as an adult. So tragic, and so preventable! 13mo
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @Pikathulhu Yes!! I think being a parent now also changed my perspective. I would be appalled if my child engaged in bullying like this!! 13mo

I have enjoyed immersing myself more in Spanish by revisiting stories that I am familiar with. I plan to continue to do this (monthly) and maybe branch out to other books I feel I could quickly grasp. Yesterday, I drove 2 hours for the kiosk in the hotel not to work and for them not to give me a room (without my husband physically present), and instead of purchasing my own - which I could have, I ended up driving back. Anyway, #DoubleSpin Down!

Trashcanman Feliz año nuevo 14mo
TheAromaofBooks Sorry your day didn't work out, but great progress on your Spanish reading!! 14mo
ElizaMarie @TheAromaofBooks I turned the day around. I was initially disappointed, but.. I enjoy driving alone and just being on the “open road,“ so I used that time to listen to my book, then listen to some music and chill -- trying to use 2023 to focus on the “good.“ 14mo

TheAromaofBooks That's a fabulous attitude!! I read a long time ago that being grateful/content/happy is something you have to practice, just like learning an instrument, until your brain starts automatically hitting those “notes“ without you even thinking about it too hard. Focusing on the positive can be challenging but I do think it gets easier and more natural with time. 14mo
ElizaMarie @TheAromaofBooks thanks! I am trying to focus my 2023 on cultivating inner peace and kindness. I need to remind myself that “if things don't work out the way I want them to,“ that doesn't mean they don't work out the way they should. It's a shift in attitude that I am working on. (Agreed, it is something that takes practice). 14mo

Stephen King Challenge is off to a good start with January's pick of Carrie. I've apparently owned my copy since 2011. Although I haven't read it like It or Dreamcatcher which I've had to replace more than once, it's still a good book every time

I found this copy of Carrie for $2 while travelling. I‘d not read it before so the timing was perfect for a small village AirBnB read. I love the cover of this one.
It‘s much more fulfilling and multi-dimensional than the movie(s). Not my favourite of his work, I think he got a lot better but it‘s the perfect size for what it is, the story & characters & torment of Carrie developed well. I thought the closing line was stupid and unnecessary.

The story is told in a very interesting way. It pops back and forth between characters experiencing the story in real time and news, academic, and court reports after the prom. I did not appreciate the vulgar parts, so I skimmed through those. But it‘s definitely a classic, scary high school tale of a telekinetic girl, poorly treated by her mother and classmates, who gets her revenge not just on her classmates that abused her but the entire town.

As problematic as Carrie is by today's standards, it's still an amazing read, and representative of the best in Stephen King foreshadowing, which he employs to great effect throughout. The first time I read this, I was in middle school and had no knowledge of what would happen. On that read, the foreshadowing served to heighten my anticipation. This time around, knowing how it would all end, the foreshadowing only evoked a sense of sadness. 5/5

Another fantastic read by Stephen king , every iv spoken to said this book scared them but for me I found it incredibly sad every page I just wanted to protect carrie . Also a nice quick easy read so a good book as an introduction into King's work 🥰

KathyWheeler I felt more the way you did when I read this book. Not scared just angry for Carrie. 1y
emmalouise1 @KathyWheeler yes the anger I had was unreal she had no one and nowhere to go ,school was just as bad as home . Just screaming the whole way through for somebody to help her to save her . 1y
KathyWheeler @emmalouise1 Exactly! People often miss the human story amid the horror in Stephen King‘s books. This was a tale of abuse where the victim had no escape, and she was forced to extremes. 1y

1. I don‘t read much horror.
2. 👮🕵️‍♂️🌂💼🩸🗡🗝🖊🚨⚰️🧐

Day 21 of #21DaysofHorror
My Stephen King origin story has two different timelines. For as long as I can remember I have loved King in theory. I was raised on the movies & made for tv adaptations of his works. We are living in a second golden age of King adaptations. The first occurred in the late 80s-early 90s with such works as the Children of the Corn, Cat's Eye, Sometimes They Come Back, Dead Zone etc, . As far as his books go, I recall👇

vivastory reading a few of his stories here & there but it was a little over 5 years ago when I sat down & read one. It was the Cycle of the Werewolf. Honestly what I remember most about it was the Bernie Wrightson illustrations & wondering if Silver Bullet would be worth watching. Fast forward 6 months later when I read Carrie & everything changed. Although I had read Dracula several months prior, Stoker's inclusion in his classic novel of journal entries 2y
vivastory & shipping manifests was still fresh in mind. Now I see King using the same format in his debut novel & would discover in subsequent books that King has a fondness for the epistolary format. Plus, the ending of it was just absolute no holds barred chaos. Several years later, & 30 books into King's catalog, this remains my go to book to recommend to people who want to try Stephen King for the first time. (edited) 2y
vivastory It's no longer my favorite book by him. It's not even in my top 10, but it literally changed my life. Thanks to everyone who joined me on this macabre & fun journey over the past 3 weeks! A big thanks to @reggie for joining in & posting his favorites as well! This has been a real blast! 2y

There is not another book that I can think of that deals with revenge on such a massive scale. Bullied, teased, tormented, Carrie White just wants to fit in.
