My first book of 2024 and what a fun one! TS Eliot is known to play with language and does it here as well. If English is not your mother tongue you might get irritated every now and then, at least so did I. But that made me enjoying those poems even more. The illustrations speak for themselves and might help younger readers to understand the stories. A lovely book for cat lovers no matter what age!

Mmm, nope. I feel that having the name T.S. Eliot on the cover and the Faber and Faber (publishing house) promotional poem at the end prompted the reissue (🫰🏻💵) of this collection of poems originally published in the 1930s, but they DO NOT age well. Sinophobia in two of the poems, a racial slur in one of those two, and no effort made to tell kids (this edition classified as juvenile lit) that the word/impression given is harmful.

The casual racism and racial slurs in a few of these is terrible and much of the language I suspect would be lost on today's kids. Some of the portraits of anthropomorphized cats are funny though and have neat rhymes?

Spend a much needed day gardening at a friend‘s house. Also got my self-inflicted quarantine haircut corrected by my friend‘s nurse sister-in-law who used to cut hair professionally. Came home to loving kitty who missed me and feel better than I have in months.

Making a to do list for tomorrow that includes a good long walk in the list.

One of my favorite book of verses.

Let's just ignore the sticker - I told my daughter Cats is a stage musical, she doesn't need to know about the abomination that was the movie!

I love this edition! Axel Scheffler one of my favourite illustrators and his rendering of the Jellicle Cats is not far off perfect! Quirky & cute but full of personality. My daughter is not quite sure what to make of the poems yet but there's time yet.

Want to know where the Cat's names and lyrics to the songs come from? Then read this. My son was second trumpet in the orchestra for his schools stage production of Cats last year which is why I picked this up. It reads like the collected tales of Hairy Maclary so children will enjoy. Do yourself a favour DON'T watch the movie go and see a local production instead.

Wow that was short. A few racial slurs that weren‘t taboo at the time but are very problematic now, but overall just as good as the musical. Now I want to watch the original musical. (& Leo came up to snuggle with me - he loves that mama‘s been home)

It‘s the last day of 2019. I‘m not going to make my goal of 50 books for the year, but my stepdaughters are with their grandmother for the day & my house is clean so I‘m spending the day reading. Starting with this gem. I‘m boycotting the movie remake of Cats because it‘s my favorite musical and they ruined it, but it got me thinking about this book of poems that it was based on. So I‘m chilling with my own magical Mr. Mistoffelees and reading.❤️

I love ALW‘s musical, CATS. Love it. It‘s coming to Charlotte in August and I can‘t wait to see it again. And unlike most of Twitter, I‘m ridiculously excited about the movie version this December. In anticipation of both, I checked this out from the library. I loved it. First time I‘ve ever read the book Cats was inspired by, and I‘m surprised how many of the lyrics are directly taken from the poems! There is some casual racism and it does mar an otherwise charming and fun book. Thankfully those parts were taken out for the musical!

Found this hardcover, illustrated beauty at an estate sale for $1!

My kitty just died💔 Lafayette was the best cuddler and a pro spider slayer. He always pushed homework and boring papers off my desk but never books. He was super chill and let us dress him up in a build a bear bumblebee costume, which I never got a picture of because I laughed too much to take a clear one. He liked to sleep across my knees at night so I couldn‘t move. He was a best kitty.💕

I went to the #Wadsworth Museum in #Hartford, #Connecticut last night for the After Hours Event: #EdwardGorey. I was so ecstatic that I forgot to take any pictures. I saw his iconic fur coats and his jewelry, obviously quite a bit of his art, art by others that he collected, played with his #Tarot cards, drank a couple beers, and watched #Dracula. I didn‘t do a #psychic reading because I basically do one on a daily basis. 😂

My practical kitty helped me enjoy this ditty 😹 for real, all cat-lovers should read this. Totally charming. #catsoflitsy

#ReadingResolutions Day 20: #DogsOrCats - I choose #Cats tonight because Edward Gorey is all kinds of #CoolCat. And yes, TS Eliot Forevermore. I think I bought this in aBook Off store for a steal in the US a few years back.

Cats was the first musical I ever saw, and it ignited my love for theatre. Realizing that there was a job where people would pay you to pretend to be a cat set 4 year old me on a life path through a University Drama Major and a career in Theatre Administration. A beautiful vintage edition Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats is on my books to own bucket list.
