My cat, Zelda, is my reading motivation; she keeps me pinned to the couch. I‘ve been a bookseller in indie shops for about 20 years. Calgary-based.

Much of my reading of this book was while sitting on the banks of the Ghost River.

Appropriate, as this story (based on the true Canadian quintuplets) is full of metaphorical ghosts.

The story is told through real news clippings and the diary of a fictional young nurse who attended their birth and cared for them the hospital the Ontario Government built for them.

Two of the Dionne quints are still alive. I must find their autobiography

Megabooks There‘s a nonfiction book coming out in the fall, but I can‘t remember the name right now. I think it‘s this one 🤔 1mo
bookseller_cate @Megabooks Thanks! I will check availability of that one. I also want to see if I can find the TV movie Million Dollar Babies. I think that‘s where I first hear about the Dionnes. 1mo

Do I still qualify as a new(ish) litten?

📚I organize my books by weird themes, sometimes by subject, sometimes by author, sometimes because in my head they just “belong” together. Yes, it occasionally creates some frustration when looking for a certain title. 😆
📚I love to sing, but I don‘t practice enough and have no ear for harmony. 🎶

I‘m finding more and more I just can‘t bear Facebook. Even those friends whose views I share are full of vitriol. I‘ve just deleted the app from my phone.

I only go on FB to post pics of my kitty. Hopefully y‘all won‘t mind a few more #catsoflitsy posts here. I promise to keep them book related as often as I can. 💛

Dress for the Wicked | Autumn Krause

Going through the last of my Edelweiss approvals. (How I‘m going to miss that site!)

I loved this book. It‘s Project Runway in teen novel form. There‘s even a Tim Gunn like mentor character. The villain was worthy of Miranda Priestley and made me long for the upcoming musical of The Devil Wears Prada.

The central characters were likeable, but still flawed and the plot surprised me a couple times — always a plus. (More below.)

bookseller_cate While I dress less than fashionably, I do love watching fashion and this book did well in describing the various designs of the competing characters, not an easy feat. (edited) 1mo
bookseller_cate My one criticism is that having now read it, the title makes little sense to me. Is it a reference I‘m not getting? 1mo

I must admit this was nearly a bail.

I felt the characters were flat and several were one-dimensional. Since character is one of Austen‘s strengths, I was disappointed.

The plot descended into high melodrama by the end, which seems more Bronte than Austen.

Writing an Austen inspired book, especially one set in her period, is a huge challenge and I congratulate the author for taking it on.

Other Austen fans may love it, but it wasn‘t for me.

This seems as good a time as any to announce that may have to add ex- to my username. I gave my notice a few weeks ago and will be leaving the bookstore at the end of July.

I‘ll start making more long term plans in September. (An MFA maybe?)

Loved this. I will admit the plot and character development could have been a touch stronger, but the style of writing and sense of place was so bonkers good, I didn‘t care.

After much distraction, I have finished these two stories.

I would highly recommend Teyve the Dairyman to any fans of Fiddler on the Roof. But be warned it has some dark moments that were not in the musical.

I love the voice in Molt, The Cantor‘s son — a young boy whose family flees to America due to pogroms. His childishness hides so much and shows such resiliency.

Highly recommended. I wish I could read the original Yiddish.

Is it ironic to be ridiculously excited about a book on Stoicism?*

I didn‘t know the bookstore was carrying this until a regular bought it. I immediately knew I would want one and considering some recent events, the timing couldn‘t be more perfect.

*This answer (to me) is no, it‘s not irony, because contrary to its reputation, Stoicism is not about repressing emotion, but rather feeling it and letting it go when its time has passed.

Exbrarian I'm an absurdist myself. Our handbook is considerably shorter. 2mo

Reading the manuscript of a book by a friend and customer (sequel to the tagged book, second of a trilogy). It‘s a wonderful, but very unusual read: almost more philosophy text than novel — which in a way makes sense as the author is a psychologist.

Zelda is very disappointed in me for neglecting the #lesmiz365 project.

Life got in the way and, according to my reading tracker, I‘m only 33% through Les Misérables, when I should be at roughly 50%.

Passed this by at first, but after sitting with our S&S rep, I knew I needed it. Sounds like a delightfully creepy answer to Sarah Waters. I was interested to see that our S&S reps had ARCs with two different covers. The bell jar featured on both, but I liked this cover enough that I dug into the pile for it.

(I hope to get to all three of these soon. Many thanks to our S&S rep for making them available.)

Some great buzz about this one. I‘m so pleased to see African authors getting more of the spotlight.

The plot involves the journey of David Livingstone‘s body and papers from inland Africa to the coast so his body could be buried in England and his work preserved.

I confess, I know little more than “Dr. Livingstone, I presume.” I‘m interested in reading an African perspective before a European one.

I somehow missed this story when it made the news. An interesting look at a headline from the perspective of both victim and perpetrator. The author succeeded in balancing empathy for both of the teens involved.

It did feel a little dry, and you could tell the author was padding things to make a book-length manuscript.

Much love to our Simon and Schuster sales rep! I was entering catalog orders and saw this title. Turns out she had foreseen my interest and ordered me an ARC.

Sounds like a very dark retelling of The Little Mermaid meets The Giver. The descendants of pregnant women thrown into the ocean by slavers cannot bear to remember the past, so the memories are kept by the historian, Yetu, who flees to the surface to find relief. ⬇️

bookseller_cate I want to start this right away, but I also want to read it without distractions. I‘m going to use this as an opportunity to finish off my other in-progress reads. I‘m having (minor) surgery on Wednesday and this will be something to look forward to as I recover. (edited) 3mo
