My cat, Zelda, is my reading motivation; she keeps me pinned to the couch. I‘ve been a bookseller in indie shops for about 20 years. Calgary-based.

I have a ticket to the Saturday matinée of Fiddler on the Roof, directed by Joel Grey and performed in Yiddish. Which means I have just over 48 hours to read Teyve the Dairyman, which has been on my list for years if not decades.

It‘s raining and the museums don‘t open for three more hours. Reading and knitting time. #knittinglittens #holidayreading

Andrea313 Enjoy the performance! I have heard such wonderful things about this production. ❤️🎶🎻 2h

Great story and characters. I love that the author is careful to explore the layers of this issue and the various motives (both well-intentioned and not) that drive people to challenge and ban books. #freedomtoread

My favourite part of vacation prep -- loading up my e-reader with Edelweiss ARCs. I know I won't get to all of these (I'm only gone ten days), but I look forward to some great reading on my flight and subway rides.

Many thanks to HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and other publishers who pre-approved me for so many great titles.

This ARC arrived in a box from Simon and Schuster. The title caught my eye, so I started it on my lunch break. I finished it at 3am that night amidst many flashbacks.

It might be a tough book to actively sell, as many parents simply don‘t want to admit what can go on in their children‘s lives, but I‘m glad this book is out there for those who are having similar experiences to the ones I had 30 years ago.

What wonderful brain candy! I‘ve already been telling fellow Browncoats about this series. It‘s no Season Two, but it‘s a heck of a lot of fun. Lovegrove hits the characters‘ voices and the cadences of speech the series developed and created a fun tale. Looking forward to the others in the series. These will likely be library reads for me due to space issues, but I don‘t plan on missing any of them.

An eye opening book about five women downtrodden by Victorian society, who have little in common but the place and time of their murders.

I especially liked Runbenhold‘s conclusion where she calls society to account for celebrating criminals rather than empathizing with and supporting victims.

Still proceeding with my #lesmiz365 project, despite being behind.

This is the section where I‘ve previously bailed on rereads. I find the Napoleonic Wars fascinating and I even attended the 200th anniversary re-enactments of the final battle, but Hugo‘s Waterloo chapters are a hell of a slog.

Home from the book club meeting about The Grand Tour. Generally liked, but there were a few who didn‘t (mostly the hard to please members).

We loved the quirky turns of phrase, the subtle humour, and the sympathetic portrait of someone battling alcoholism. Several of us will seek out his forthcoming book, The Hotel Neversink (out this August) which takes place on a Jewish resort in the Catskills, a settling that has long fascinated me.

Cinfhen I always enjoy bookclub!! And luckily, our curmudgeons left the group 😁 2mo

Great description of Powell‘s in Portland.

“Vance floated around the store in a dissociated fog. As long as he could remember, he'd wanted not only to lose himself in books but to build a physical fortress out of them, a citadel of words to keep the world at bay. And when he was younger, in fact, he'd done just that, building forts from his burgeoning collection. This store felt like an actual adult version of that impulse brought to life.”

Loved this book!

Such a pitch perfect story of how music influences our coming of age. It doesn‘t hurt that our protagonist falls in love with Maria Callas! (Opera fan, here.)

I love how Byron Eggenschwiler (who is from Calgary) illustrates both the feelings behind the different styles of music and the transportive power of “our” genre/artist/song. #yycillustrator #yycbooks

Many thank to Groundwood Books and Ampersand Inc for the sample copy.

bookseller_cate My personal opera crush is the German soprano Diana Damrau. I still hope to see her live one day. I‘m a big Jennifer Donnelly fan, so perhaps I‘m being too picky, but I felt like this wasn‘t her best. The book seems to waver in tone between “fun mid-grade” and “gritty teen” fantasy. It also is sometimes a little too “on the nose” with its message.

The best part of working in an indie bookstore is the relationships we form with our patrons.

This morning, I was emailing with a regular customer who was looking to complete this series. When she told me it was about slightly sarcastic talking cats, I was sold.

She turned up this afternoon with her childhood copy of the first book for me to borrow. This is definitely a case of “drop everything and read it now” so I can return it in good time.

As usual, I started the book way too late, but as soon as I picked it up, I read it pretty much in one sitting.

Almost more character-study than novel, this book explores the interaction between art, state and memory. The language is gorgeous and Shostakovich a fascinating character. I‘m interested in learning more about the real-life version.
