As of yesterday this is the current read in the #ParasolProtectorate readalong. It‘s f/f romance and isn‘t entirely a stand-alone because it features a character from one of this universe‘s series but you could probably read it without having read the Finishing School series.

theresidentromantic I didn't realize I was in line with a read a long! I've been audioing them as a reread, I'm about to start book 4. Where does this book fit in the time line? I haven't read these mini stories, like Channing Channing of the Chesterfield Channings, but I want to read them in time line order... 1d
jpmcwisemorgan @theresidentromantic I‘m following along with it on Facebook but I re-read most of the series last year so I‘m only reading the ones I‘ve not read. The entire series starts the Curious Case short story. This is followed by the Finishing School books, which is the YA series Carriger wrote after the Parasol Protectorate series. Next in the timeline is the Poison and Protect novella. Fourth in the timeline is the Parasol Protectorate series. 4h
jpmcwisemorgan @theresidentromantic The Romancing the Inventor novella comes after that series and then it starts moving back and forth between books and novellas - Prudence, Imprudence, Romancing the Werewolf novella, Competence, How to Marry a Werewolf novella, and Reticence (out in August). There are no more books planned in the series but Carriger plans to release some more novellas I think. 4h
jpmcwisemorgan @theresidentromantic I think there are Littens reading along so if you look under the books you can probably find them, and whatever hashtags they might be using. 4h

Mafia and Magics | Lyn Gala

Finished it! I liked it even though it was basically a side story with little of the main characters from the first part of the series. At first I was annoyed by that but then we got a little more of how magic used to be and that‘s leading my brain all sorts of places. I wonder if we‘ll see Angel and Matteo later? This is a solid series that‘s not all cops and robbers. Lots of magic.

I do t want to read any of the books I own. I also think I don‘t want to read any of the books that exist in this work. But I want to read something but my brain refuses to say what it wants. Instead, I had a dream about how one of my friends wanted to try on wedding dresses. Aaahhhhhh!!!

DGRachel I hate days like that. Good luck!🍀 3d

I couldn‘t remember reading this one when I read the description but once I started reading I did remember! Yay! The magic is still a focus but now there‘s more world building and focus on being FBI agents. It‘s interesting to see how magic both shapes the user and the user shapes the magic, so to speak. On to book five, which I‘ve not read.

The Patsy | Brian O'Sullivan

#LitsyPSA: The author has put the tagged book and The Puppeteer on sale for $2.99 (ebook). I think they‘re that price for the week. I thought there might be some Littens who would be interested in knowing this.

And the plot thickens! In this one, the magical purge is explained and more of how people get their magical powers is explained. More sexy times but I like that it‘s part of the main characters life - it‘s not, oh, let‘s have a sex scene now.

Note: the author does bring up skin color but it‘s not constant and it‘s not the comparison to coffee you usually see. The series does touch on bigotry toward people with magical powers and sometimes race.

Derivation | Lyn Gala
Pickpick

Politics in the mundane and magical world. References to a past magical purge continue but by the end of the book you get a smidge more detail. More on what magic is derived from (yes, the title does tell you where the book is going). I like the magical system in this series. It‘s not hard to follow but it has a few surprises.

Thanks to a post by @Butterflyamore about a month ago I‘m now reading this. Then I‘m going to watch the movie again. Silver Bullet was a favorite movie when I was a kid so let‘s see how it holds up. The book is reminding me of the movie quite a bit!

I‘ve read this one a couple of times but I‘m re-reading so I can catch up with the series. It‘s a little bit mystery, a little bit magic, with the explanation of the magical system made throughout the book. The main relationship is there from the start but they don‘t get serious until later so there‘s time to develop the characters. I‘d say this could be considered m|m urban fantasy so if that‘s your thing, you might enjoy this series.

I‘ve read this one a couple of times, and there‘s a second one out now. This is three stories that starts with Hades and continues with different characters getting their own stories but with Hades and his human partner, Tiberius, showing up. It‘s not just Greek gods either, Set and others make appearances - as does a dragon. If you like gods and m|m this just might be for you.

ravenlee @lyradora this sounds like something you might enjoy. 2w

Torn on this one, and not just because it‘s the first in what appears to be a series of six books (I think four are out). There‘s magic and intrigue but sometimes it feels like it took too long to get anywhere. I liked the end and figure I‘ll try the second to see how it goes.

Lucy_Anywhere The series gets better and better, I promise! 3w

Gods and Thieves! Perfect. @Nazgul93 - this is an excellent selection of books. I know I wasn‘t very specific in my survey and you hit on some of my favorite story aspects. 😀

Also, the candy is awesome. I love the mini swords and it‘s probably a good thing they‘re not sharp or I might have stabbed someone at work with them. I‘m putting the button on a bag and the sign (not pictured) is already up in my workspace.

jpmcwisemorgan @Nazgul93 The Prey of Gods is really calling to me so I‘m going to hurry up and finish what I‘m already reading. When I get sucked into stories about gods I start binging so I‘m trying to prepare for that. I‘m eating the Skittles while I grade, they‘re really helping. 3w

Road Trip! | Jan Fields

My friend and I are driving to and from Albuquerque later this year. It‘s about 20 hours in the car, round trip. We‘re considering an audiobook for the trip and have the following criteria:
1. Stand alone
2. 20ish hours
3. We both liked Ready Player One so something similar - fantasy, paranormal, sci-fi, pop culture references are all good
4. Not a mystery/thriller
5. Not Harry Potter because we both have read that - a lot

Any suggestions?

julesG Dodo? But it's definitely not 20 hours. 3w
jpmcwisemorgan @julesG This one sounds like something we‘d both like. Amazon says it‘s under 25 hours so that could still work if we listened in the hotel some. Thank you! I‘ll put it in the list to chose from. @LibrarianRyan Does it work ok in audio? I‘ve read it and I‘m wondering how it works in that format. It‘s one I think my friend would like. 3w
See All 12 Comments
LibrarianRyan @jpmcwisemorgan I haven‘t listened to it, but my friends rave that it‘s full cast. 3w
julesG @LibrarianRyan Illuminae was on my mind, too. The audiobook is good. But it's not a standalone. That said, I still haven't read book two and am still alive. 3w
LibrarianRyan @julesG I‘ve read the entire trilogy and had tooooooo. And I forgot she wanted a stand alone 3w
LibrarianRyan Okay how about You could do the entire series in about 20 hours. 3w
julesG @LibrarianRyan I will read the trilogy. I have book two on my kindle. I just haven't found the right time yet. I feel obligated to get my ARC TBR done first. 🙈🙈🙈🙈 3w
LibrarianRyan @julesG amen to that 3w
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan @julesG I was thinking of a stand alone because I didn‘t want us to start a series and then not finish it but Illuminae would still work because it‘s not a long audiobook - we could probably get through 2/3 of the series in the trip. I‘m going to present it with the other two suggestions as options because I like all of them. Thank you both! 3w
jpmcwisemorgan @julesG I‘ve only read Illuminae and I‘m also still alive! I keep thinking I‘ll finish it but I don‘t. 🤷‍♀️ 3w

I went to the Van Gogh exhibit at the Houston Museum of Fine Art and, of course, came home with a book. This is absolutely on brand for me!

I‘ve not taken the protective cover off and the hotel room is dark so it‘s not the best picture. The book is very pretty. There were others I would have liked to have acquired but I have a budget that I‘m trying to stick with!

Overall goal is to read books peripheral or directly related to the Green New Deal, until something actually comes out.

I‘m sending two boxes to see how that works out because books can go media mail. #mythsandlegendsswaps

LibrarianRyan I did that for all my recent swaps this time. Cost me less than flat rate for all but one package which matches flat rate. 1mo
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan I think it allows for the ability to use a padded envelope for other items if they‘re things like bookmarks and chocolate/candy. I have something that will need a box but if I didn‘t, I‘d use a padded envelope. 1mo

I wanted to like this. There are good elements - shifters, found family, private investigators. But the story and the writing leave a lot to be desired. I can‘t explain it but it reads almost like a draft that has been edited but needs to be tightened up. Or something. I don‘t know.

This started out slow and I wasn‘t sure how I‘d feel about it. Relationship-wise it‘s a slow build. The overall story is trafficking of children and it was handled well - not too many details, just enough so you know it‘s happening and it‘s not good.
