So far, Chapter 1 is quite possibly the best such chapter in any book, ever. I‘m serious.

@Liberty said this book was bananapants so, of course, I put a hold on it so fast at the library. It wasn‘t even released yet so I had to wait, and I wasn‘t very patient about it. I‘m super excited about this one!

Wake of Vultures | Lila Bowen
Mehso-so

Hmmm....I‘m mixed on this one. Interesting alternate universe of the early American western frontier, complete with Rangers. Bowen (who is actually Delilah S. Dawson) plays fast and loose with facts and I think this could have worked better if it were actually an own voices book. It ended on a cliffhanger so I‘m going to need to read the next book but I‘m not in a hurry to do it.

jpmcwisemorgan I really wanted to like this book more but I read Rebecca Roanhorses‘s Trail of Lightning first and now any book with Native Americans and fantasy and monsters and/or gods will have to live up to it. 3w

Still has good artwork but there seems to be some gaps in the story. Definitely not as good as the first volume but still worth seeing how the story goes. It ends on “coming soon” nite so if there isn‘t anything after this that kind of bites.

I liked this, even though I think the plot could have been a bit better particularly in the last two issues that make up this volume. The art is awesome! It‘s queer, diverse, and probably ok for some middle graders. I couldn‘t find what ages it was recommend for but I also did look that hard. I think the comic is cancelled and it‘s moving more into a graphic novel format.

I‘ve not read the book yet and I‘m considering watching the show - what‘s the word, Litsy?

DGRachel I thought the book had potential, but had serious pacing issues. I haven't watched the show, but I'm interested, too. 1mo
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel I have the first one as an ebook. It must have been on sale and I decided it looked good but never read it. 1mo
DGRachel It was one of the first books I bought on a bookseller‘s recommendation at Park Road Books. It was good enough that I bought the sequel, but I haven‘t read it, yet. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1mo

I started this some time ago and just finished it, through no fault of the book. Life kind of got in the way and I needed comfort reads with no surprises. This was well-done, good backstories and character development for all the major players. There‘s a little twist and what looks like a second twist but it‘s not. Whew! 😉 The comments by LibrarianRyan are spot on (Litsy isn‘t letting me tag)!

LibrarianRyan Yeah. Glad you liked it. I thought it was just a fun romp. Brain Candy if you will. 1mo

I‘m kind of mixed on this one. I‘m not sure how I found out about it but whatever comment or review I read made me interested and I feel like this book didn‘t live up to that. There were some great moments but sometimes there was some weird awkwardness that I‘m having a hard time explaining.

Spook Squad: A Psycop Novel | Jordan Castillo Price

Six months ago I requested Quill Me Now be added to the database and now the series is on book four. I‘d like to actually be able to review them here but that‘s a long time to wait for a book to be added. I have an ARC of book four so I‘m reading two and three this weekend. So far, so good for Trouble in Taco Town!

Note: I still haven‘t read Spook Squad. I really need to return to that series!

LibrarianRyan If you are on the desktop version of Litsy, you can add books yourself. 1mo
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan That‘s good to know! I don‘t have a computer at home so I‘ll have to try that next week when I have access to one. 1mo
GlassAsDiamonds Ooohhh I had this “conversation” with @Litsy about a month ago. 😡😡😡 Can‘t say much has changed, app adding still seems to be down (& I‘ve never used Litsy from a computer). So frustrating when it used to be so easy and reliable! 1mo

Litsy @GlassAsDiamonds While it's true the Add a Book page is still web-only, the web version of Litsy should work on your mobile device, too. Try it here: https://www.litsy.com/web/addbook. You may need to sign into Litsy from your device's browser, but that should work! 1mo
jpmcwisemorgan @Litsy So it doesn‘t do what Goodreads does and automatically send me to the app? Because that‘s awesome if it doesn‘t! It‘s probably one of my biggest pet peeve with Goodreads. 1mo
Litsy @jpmcwisemorgan Nope, it does not! If you're using Litsy on the web on your mobile device—even if you have the app installed—you'll stay within your browser. No links within Litsy on the web will open the app, for example. 1mo

#LitsyPSA: This is 99 cents and it‘s also available on KU. The second and third books are on KU too - and it looks like the second book might be 99 cents right now. I remember liking this one but it‘s been a couple of years and I‘ve not kept up with the series. It‘s more YA, has vampires and witches, a curse, and there might be a love triangle developing. I may have to revisit this one soon!

Alrighty then. I didn‘t manage to make it out without buying anything this time. I also managed to finish a sizeable chunk of the book club book that I decided to wait until the last minute to start (standard practice, tbh). One of the most awesome things about this book are its references to citizen science. Sometimes we know things because someone has kept careful records. They did it because they thought the flower was pretty, or they‘d never seen that particular bird before. It was just something someone wanted to know and now we can track changes over time because of someone‘s innate curiosity.

This annoys me. It‘s even worse when authors feel compelled to describe scientists who are women. It‘s often comes across as “oh they‘re not very attractive so that‘s why they‘re scientists” or “they‘re attractive and it‘s so hard to believe they‘re scientists”. Mary Roach is terrible about this. Tell the reader their credentials and move on. Who cares about their grin?! Ahhhhhhhh!!!

I‘ve decided that I need to move more inland to escape as much of the ocean rising as I can. I‘m not sure I should read this book right now!

rretzler I‘m trying to convince my husband that we need to invest in property in the middle of the US - when the worst happens it should be very handy and valuable!😜 2mo
jpmcwisemorgan @rretzler You should move now. If things happen quickly, you won‘t have time to get there. I‘m worried that we‘re moving out of the period of slow and slowish change to a period of more rapid change. 2mo
rretzler Fortunately, I think we‘re safe where we live unless the Great Lakes would flood somehow. The weather this summer has certainly got me thinking about how much weather patterns have changed over the 56 years of my life and what might be in store for my kids when they are my age in 40 or so years. It‘s frightening to say the least. 2mo

Ok, so the #TalkGreenToMe book club meets tomorrow and I‘m only 6% done with the book. 😬 Right now I‘m reading about permafrost thawing and, not to be alarmist, but we‘re all going to die. I keep hoping I won‘t live to see how this all ends but I become increasingly afraid that I will. Don‘t worry about those plastic straws because we‘re going down in flames, possibly quite literally. Or in some version of the Big Water from Trial of Lightning.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I read her The Sixth Extinction and have meant to pick this one up ever since, but I agree...that book proved to me that the alarm bells were ringing on high alert, and no one seems to care. 2mo
Hooked_on_books The Sixth Extinction from her is outstanding. I found the tagged book a little tougher to get through, as it‘s a bit drier. I‘m sure it will spur great conversation, though. 2mo
jpmcwisemorgan @Hooked__on__books I‘ve read The Sixth Extinction. I recall liking it but I don‘t think it was really too much of a surprise. This one isn‘t, either, but I sometimes like to forget that the clock is ticking and we‘re not doing anything to change it. We‘ve been past changing light bulbs and fuel efficient cars for a long time but that‘s what it seems people think will save us. 2mo
jpmcwisemorgan @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes, I liked that one. I think Hooked_on_books is right about this one because it is a bit drier, and is heavier on the science but still reasonably accessible if you‘ve read other similar books. So far, I wouldn‘t recommend it to someone new to environmental issues. 2mo

I switched versions and can‘t find one that actually looks like the one I‘m reading. 🤷‍♀️

To be honest, that first sentence of the second paragraph is all I needed to know. I mean, I already knew it but seeing it in an official document, in black and white - that‘s what I wanted.

jpmcwisemorgan @BookishMarginalia It‘s happening again too, I think. And the media just wants to keep going on about poor 45 voters and how Dems need to win them over. There‘s not a lot of reporting on some of the problems with voting machines. I‘ll see an article and then it‘s dropped from the news. There‘s an occasional article about gerrymandering or voter suppression and then it‘s dropped. We have serious problems, Russia is only one of them. 2mo

Help! There is a quote from a movie or a book but NOT this book that‘s similar to Covey‘s idea of “begin with the end in mind”. I also don‘ think it‘s the quote hat shows up you get when you Google something like “start as you mean to go”. Thoughts???

ravenlee I‘ve always heard the aphorism, “begin as you mean to go on,” and I‘ve seen variations on that in various books, but I‘m not aware of it originating in a book. 3mo
jpmcwisemorgan @ravenlee Thank you! I feel better because the Covey quote came up in something else I‘m reading and I couldn‘t quite get why it was familiar and knowing that it shows up in some form in more than one book helps. That means that‘s probably what‘s happened for me - it‘s probably not one specific book. Now my brain can stop thinking about it. 3mo

I liked that the two main characters weren‘t perfect and that their relationship wasn‘t going to be either, but they were going to stick together. They‘d already managed to avoid being killed, each trying to protect the other at different times. There was a literal dance with Death. But overall the book was kind of me. I‘m feeling kind of meh so that could just be me.
