Goat Days | Benyamin

Pickpick

A beautifully written #TrueStory of unimaginable torment, unshakeable faith and the indefatigable human spirit. Lots of lessons in here - how little the body needs to survive, how it adapts, how the brain conspires to keep you alive even when it seems impossible and an elucidation that the need to live is a deep-seated driving force that never leaves you even when you think it‘s all over. A humbling #MustRead that will wring you out.

#Unputdownable The victim is alive nearing the half-way mark, and that ups the dynamics of the characters. Aside: The narrator of my 2nd book of 2019, Nurse Leatheran, is a far cry from the daring & chutzpah of Dervla Murphy. It takes place in a country the latter cycled through. But the impressions formed by the fictional Nurse is poles apart. I guess it‘s proof of the times - one published in 1936, and an adventure undertaken in 1963. #Christie

I was to start with the Spring prompts for #Booked2019 but it was a cold January. And Murphy‘s swashbuckling adventure on 2 wheels fit right in. This is unrefined commentary of a bold, curious, unprejudiced traveller whose words might irk you or you‘d agree with. And that‘s the beauty of it. But mostly you just marvel at her tenacity, the terrain she pedals through and the people she meets. An inspiring way to start 2019. #IrishAuthor #Winter

The Book of Life | Deborah E. Harkness

Pickpick

I‘ve got my hands in 2 different books (1 murder mystery and 1 biblio mystery that is slow-moving but I‘m keen on finishing it in what‘s left of this year). But when The Book of Life arrived, I had to abandon everything else and dive right in. What a thoroughly enchanting conclusion to a tale fraught with cunning & pitfalls of the heart! I wish it didn‘t end.

AppuNthebooks Vampires, Witches and Daemons aside, the book at its core is about being different but same. A timely reminder in the current divisive atmosphere. Harkness‘ trilogy has set me up nicely for her new book - Time‘s Convert - that focusses on another set of key characters. In Picture: A magical place I escaped to on my birthday. (edited) 7mo

Come January it‘s Spring here in India. So here‘s the roundup for my first leg of #Booked2019 @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft Tharoor for Night-Oriented Title, Perumal Murugan for Indigenous Author, Kiedis for Musician, Ghosh on climate change for Social Media Focus (my timeline is filled with updates on Cyclone Gaja) and it‘s a tie between the Anglo-Indian Cookbook & the alimentary canal for Food or Beverage on Cover.

This part-fiction part-memoir drew me into the sticky sweet mess that was the life of the Sri Lankan Burghers, quite like the fruit from the tree that surveys their upheavals of joy, sorrow and victories. Be transported to a bygone era and come out of the final page immersed in the antiquities of a unique people. Illustration by Aart-Jan Venema of Geoffrey Bawa, a Burgher and a pioneering Architect.

I binge watched A Discovery of Witches. I like that Palmer isn‘t a raspy smitten kitten like KStew. Though in parts she too, did the breathless act. But who can blame her when it‘s Matthew Goode! So, I wrapped up the series eager to see part 2. It‘s under production so I grabbed the book instead and read at a mad pace. In 48hrs I had been to Elizabethan England, developed a dislike for Marlowe and was left pining for Part 3. A bewitching read!

This #classic left me in a daze. Billy is the real deal. Larry and He are on the same quest to be ‘Free‘. But Billy showed me life doesn‘t heed wants. The defining moment was when he felt that primal urge to step away from the trappings of the mundane, he was drawn irrevocably to it by the mere sight of a couple of NewYorkers. It isn‘t easy even after he crosses that vivid, invisible threshold of no return. #Riotgram #Day12

Larry was all I wanted to be when I discovered him in college. But what a far cry my life is from the vagabond in search of enlightenment. What I want has changed. But I‘ve also come to realise to travel is a privilege. To seek a deeper meaning is privilege. In retrospect now, Larry‘s life arc seems idealistic. The joy of reading too, is a privilege and I am thankful for it. #Classics #Riotgram #Day12

This book still has me thinking. And it‘s not the rebel Satyam and his hardships that has left a dent. It‘s his sister Manjula, the author‘s mother whose story is riveting with its immeasurable scale of pain. Oppression of any kind beats down women twice as hard. Yet she survives and how! Essential reading for India‘s urbanites. The ones who pretend caste doesn‘t exist, that Dalit oppression is a sham, that reservation is unjust. Bye bye privileged ignorance! This book reveals what‘s happening now isn‘t new or isolated. There‘s a long history of injustice fed by a depraved insecurity. Add to this the plague of gender discrimination. Prepare to be schooled! Gidla says it as it is. Art: An exhibit from ‘Hidden Feelings On Canvas‘

Reading Gunslinger, I now understand why King is a master of thrills. There's something about his words and the way they're staged that the dreams they spin well after you've closed the book, are bizarre. And they hold you in a grip of chills and fascination. Quite like his writing. #Journey #JubilantJuly though there's nothing jubilant about this read except that I finally mustered the courage to pick up King.

A moving, gripping, bittersweet read! An immersive WW2 story with characters that linger long after you're done with it. Doerr humanises the people in the war and maybe that's a lesson in gray, a lesson to walk a mile before you presume. The latter especially seems relevant today. 'What's his/her story?' it makes one wonder of rebels/partisans/terrorists. The overwhelming feeling it leaves us with though is that life goes on.
