My biggest complaint about Stranger Things (really ONLY complaint, I love that show) is that it‘s not a book! As a joke, my husband surprised me with this book! It‘s sort of a prequel with Eleven‘s mother‘s backstory. So far, it‘s poorly written trash, which is completely what I expected and has not disappointed. I‘m kind of in the mood for mindless trash anyway.

So I‘ve recently bumped Carrie Fisher up a few levels on my Heroes list and bumped her memoir way up on my TBR list because my new therapist kicked me off the depression bandwagon and upgraded(?) me to bipolar, which honestly makes way more sense and answers so many questions. Maybe I can actually get proper treatment that helps this time around? I look forward to digging into this, and I like that it‘s SHORT! (I can‘t finish anything lately!!)

TheKidUpstairs Yay for better answers, a better diagnosis, and hopefully better treatment! 2mo

This book was “assigned reading” by my therapist (it‘s like she knows me!). I feel a little bad that I didn‘t get much out of it though. I scored really high on the HSP self-test at the beginning and was excited to read about misfits like me, but the only chapter I could really relate to was the one about thriving at work. I also had a real problem with her hokey garbage solutions. (e.g. Don‘t take life-saving meds! Just smile more and drink tea!)

MidnightBookGirl Umm, tea is great, but so is medicine. 3mo

I somehow lost book 3 of Narnia at some point when I was an irresponsible young child and it never turned up. I have just been settling for a mismatched copy I picked up at Borders it appears in 2002 - they didn‘t have the same editions. Today at the used bookstore, I finally bought the missing book! Do you know how awesome it feels to finally be in possession once again of a COMPLETE set again?! After many years of suffering!

Hestapleton I felt that way about the first Harry Potter book! I left my new copy open in the sun and the binding split and pages fell out. Took me ages to get a proper replacement! 4mo
hgrimes @Hestapleton Oh no! That‘s the worst! I‘ve run into these editions of Narnia on a number of occasions, and each time I‘ve withheld because I‘m obsessive and second guess myself on which book I‘m missing. This time I just took a deep breath and bravely made the $3 purchase. 4mo

If you‘re thinking about finding a therapist, but are on the fence about it or have no clue where to start, this is a perfect book for that! It goes through the meanings of all the various abbreviations and other mental health jargon, ways to shop for a therapist and finding a good fit, all the various types of therapy, and what to expect. I was feeling really overwhelmed, and now feel a lot more confident after reading this book.

I have my first therapy appointment in many, many years at the end of the month, and as is my nature, I‘m really stressed about it!! Then I found out a mental health youtuber I‘m a casual fan of released a book a few months ago and it turns out it‘s just what I need right now - a book that lays everything out in an organized manner, in clear and concise layperson language so I know exactly what to expect!

WhatWouldJaneDo I hope your appointment goes well! It's so hard to get started so it's amazing you've taken that first step. 4mo
mcipher I hope it goes well and you like the therapist! That‘s the hardest part, I think, finding a really good fit. 🤗 4mo

hgrimes @mcipher So true. I made an attempt about 15 years ago and honestly was not successful. At least nowadays my insurance isn‘t limited to 6 sessions, so I can take as long as I need to find a good match (thanks, Obama!). I finally feel ready and determined to take on this challenge, but it took a ton of internal convincing! 4mo
RebL I saw a therapist for the first time at age 45. She does cognitive behavioral therapy. I thought it was so hokey, and so I was annoyed when one of the techniques successfully stalled a panic attack. 4mo

This was a good book, but I think she should‘ve tweaked the ending just a tad so she could leave us on a high note. Notes on this book:
1. A must-read if you have an anxiety disorder or if social media/modern day technology has a tendency of triggering great amounts of stress.
2. This is a follow-up to “Reasons to Stay Alive”, but it can definitely be read independently.
3. Short chapters = short attention span friendly!
4. Very quotable.
5. I checked this out from the library, but I‘ve determined that I need it on my shelf.
