I‘m not a series person, but this kept popping up in my bookish spaces, and the concept and cover finally got me. Entertaining, and often very funny. I enjoyed, but probably not enough to read seven more books, though. That‘s way too much reading commitment for this mood reader.
My 2026 Book of the Year was always leaning towards Dungeon Crawler Carl. Ever since I discovered that series and binged books 1-6 it quickly became one of my favorite series of all time. Its hilarious, like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy meets Ready Player One with hints of the Hunger Games and Maze Runner mixed in. Ready for Book 8 and OBH.
I REALLY hope Matt Dinniman shows up to BookCon2026.

Anyone who loves animals should read this. This book features the seven-week-long tale of Guard Dog‘s unchaining and adoption, an illustrated history of Guard Dog (written by Patrick McDonnell), real-life rescue stories, and empowering information from voices in the animal welfare community. One of only TWO 5-star reads for me this year. (the other was LES MISERABLES). From a comic book to an epic! 🤣

Feel like Nadatani is hitting his stride, there was a heavier proportion of linear narrative in the first few books as things were established, but now the reader can enjoy vignettes of Kozakura and her cats, still strong on the gamer girl and cat care themes. They're adorable and silly and I love them all.
