He manages to provide a strange aesthetic to the weird and the odd – providing it with a subtle sense of the uncanny and the profound, and a kind of deliberately beautiful strangeness and celebrated ambiguity. Phew! That was another tough one ?

This 1000-piece jigsaw is titled "Baby Toss", but has the Doubtful Guest tossed it over the balcony rail, or is the housekeeper tossing it upstairs? And is this sort of behaviour why Edward Gorey's childcare business failed? ?

What could be better than a book of haunting short stories picked by Edward Gorey? Same book with Edward Gorey illustrations. These short stories will make you shiver and one or two might make you sleep with the lights on. I loved this book, so much. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So I think this is the children‘s book… I think it‘s meant to teach children the alphabet. I think this because it goes through the alphabet by using the child‘s name. What makes me question it, is the fact that it proceeds to tell you the ghastly way that child died. Super dark for an alphabet book.

I spotted this while reading the New York Review of Books. This month marks the 100th anniversary of Edward Gorey‘s birth 🎂
At the end of last year, I saw an amazing exhibit called Journey to the World of Edward Gorey - I love his illustrations!

People wander through the snow in despair; a strange bird accosts two fur-coated gentlemen; random objects fall from the sky; an orphan child freezes to death by the roadside; vague figures lurk at the peripheries; there is no narrative, nor any explanation other than those the reader willfully imposes or has unwillingly evoked.

My Halloween aesthetic is pretty much where you could stick me in an Edward Gorey set for Dracula and I‘d be happy as a clam. Intricate library? ✔️ gothic arches? ✔️ goofy/creepy faces poking out in the background? ✔️
Maybe add in Nightmare before Christmas‘s movie-in-background or at least the music and some mad scientist-ness, and I‘m there!

Progress:
last week was super productive in terms of books I've finished. 4 anthologies and Project Hail Mary was a delight. I moved on to Fire & Blood, but I still need to pick something lighter to listen to between F&B and detective fiction. Hoping next week will be similarly productive.

These were really interesting. This one included some sketches as well.

These are getting harder to find, but I am really enjoying the variety in these complications.
