Skeleton Crew | Stephen King
109 posts | 170 read | 4 reading | 76 to read
Stephen King at his best (The Denver Post)a terrifying, award-winning collection of stories from the outer limits of one of the greatest imaginations of our time. A supermarket becomes the place where humanity makes its last stand against destruction. A trip to the attic becomes a journey to hell. A woman driver finds a scary shortcut to paradise. An idyllic lake harbors a bottomless evil. And a desert island is the scene of the most terrifying struggle for survival ever waged. These wonderfully gruesome stories (The New York Times Book Review) include: The Mist; Here There Be Tygers; The Monkey; Cain Rose Up; Mrs. Todds Shortcut; The Jaunt; The Wedding Gig; Paranoid: A Chant; The Raft; Word Processor of the Gods; The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands; Beachworld; The Reapers Image; Nona; For Owen; Survivor Type; Uncle Ottos Truck; Morning Deliveries (Milkman No. 1); Big Wheels: a Tale of the Laundry Game (Milkman No. 2); Gramma; The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet; and The Reach. In this wildly imaginative, delightfully diabolical collectionKing once again proves to be the consummate storyteller (The Associated Press).

SKELETON CREW | Stephen King

In between novels I enjoy short stories. They‘re quick, fun, & often fulfilling😊📖👍

This collection is not to be missed. It consists of many of King‘s most well-known shorts, including THE JAUNT (absolutely terrifying), SURVIVOR-TYPE (disturbingly compelling), the novella THE MIST (cosmic creatures), and many more. After your current novel—if the urge strikes—perhaps sample a short story before your next big read!

bthegood I believe books are meant to be handled - the more writing, wear and tear, the more they have been loved. I have a book my nana had in high school - it has her name and her notes in it - I love that I can look at that and see what she was thinking as a senior in high school about a play by Shakespeare - write away 😊 4mo

Not the greatest collection of King short stories, but there is certainly a lot of variety in this bunch. Starting it out with "The Mist" made all the remaining stories pale in comparison though.

Overall, I liked the mixture and I didn't dislike any, so still a pick even though none of them really blew me away.

bthegood the Mist is still one of my favorite (book ) endings - the movie ending not good! 🙂 7mo
Addison_Reads @bthegood I haven't seen the movie, but I agree that the book ending was excellent. 7mo

There are 21 shorts in this collection. I listened to 20 (skipped The Mist because I've read that one already). There were a handful, The Jaunt (one of the shortest and best imo), Uncle Otto's Truck, and The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet, that were quite good. The rest...not so much. As a whole, I'd give the collection 3 stars. This was my #doublespin book.

#LittensDressedInBlood Today's prompt is Monster Mash

I have vivid memories of listening to this book in the late 80's on a trip from VA to PA with my dad. It was winter time, and gray and cloudy and rainy, and at the time the “3-D“ audio made it feel like we were trapped in the mist ourselves, waiting for the monsters to pounce.

Congrats @TheLudicReader
1. The Reach by Stephen King (short story in tagged book) - it is one of the few stories I have remembered title/author/story for years - it stayed with me
2. The Reach by Stephen King - it is not a horror/scary story - it is a good King to read for people who don't like horror/scary -

TheLudicReader Stephen King is a solid choice. Thanks for participating. 1y

Clocking in at 640 pages, Skeleton Crew is King's second longest story collection. The first 150 pages are comprised of The Mist. This is a masterpiece of existential horror, on par with Pet Sematary. The rest of the book has works that stand out more than others & I will definitely be rereading certain stories in the future. It was great becoming more familiar with Castle Rock, the setting for many of these stories.

LeahBergen I read this in the ‘80s and still think of it fondly. 🖤 2y
Bookish_AF Oohhhhh The Jaunt!!! 2y
OwenBanner Yeah, the Jaunt was great too. I had to read the Mist after watching the movie. Both were incredible 2y

I've been told, more than a few times, that patience is one of my best personal characteristics. Even I have limits to my patience, & it's waiting in line! I hate to say it, but I see myself in the last sentence. 😂 I have to go grocery shopping later today & I'm starting to think that it's bad luck, or some kind of omen, to read The Mist the same day.

Tamra I wish I could say the same about myself. 😅 2y

DGRachel @BookwormAHN I didn‘t attempt this one, but I‘m glad you‘re enjoying it! Anything in particular stand out about The Mist? 3y
BookwormAHN @DGRachel For one thing the book ending is a lot less bleak than the movie one. Also the story really sucks you in until a mist filled with giant monsters seems completely plausible. And you really feel for the main character David, he has a very everyman feel to him. 3y
DGRachel @BookwormAHN Sounds really good. I may have to add it to my TBR for next October! 3y
Karkar The Mist was one of the two stories I liked in this collection. I was disappointed in this one. 😬 3y
JulAnna The Mist is definitely my favorite in this collection, but I also liked The Jaunt, Word Processor of the Gods, and The Raft. I liked more of the stories in Night Shift than in Skeleton Crew, but there are few authors who can deliver a short story as well as Stephen King. He can write a strong character in a few words, imho. 3y

W is for Word Processor of the Gods; a short story written by King, collected in Skeleton Crew and made into an episode of that awesome 80‘s series; Tales From The Darkside. It tells the story of a disenchanted writer whose nephew dies, leaving him a birthday gift of a homemade word processor that has the ability to affect reality when used. It‘s one of those “three wishes” type stories that has a happier turnout than The Monkey‘s Paw.

C.Perone I loved this story when I first read it back in the 80s and “word processors” were just staring to become a thing 😊 4y
