Stephen Kings gem of a story (Chicago Tribune) about a child with extraordinary psychic powers who is on the run from the government. A #1 national bestseller.Andy McGee and Vicky Tomlinson participated in a drug experiment run by a veiled government agency known as The Shop. One year later, they marry. Two years later, their little girl, Charlie, sets her teddy bear on fire by simply staring at it. Now that Charlie is eight, she doesnt start fires anymore. Her parents have taught her to control her pyrokinesis, the ability to set anythingtoys, clothes, even peopleaflame. But The Shop knows about and wants this pigtailed ultimate weapon. Shop agents set out to hunt down Charlie and her father in a ruthless chase that traverses the streets of New York and the backwoods of Vermont. Terrifying and gripping (The Miami Herald) Firestarter is chilling proof that Stephen King is superb (Time).

Stephen King is always great. This is a story about a government experiment gone wrong and test subjects just trying to survive. The remains of a family with special abilities are on the run for their life. This really gives me Under The Dome type of feelings.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Every time I opened this book, The Prodigy song (same title) popped into my head, taking me back a couple of decades. If you don‘t know it, look it up! 🤘🏼 A “Lot 6” experiment eventually leads to a child born with a dangerous pyrokinetic power. Now, the government agency responsible wants her dead. Solid story, but too long-winded even though it‘s brief by King‘s standards. #bookclub

Cinfhen I recently listened to this audio for #pop22 #BecomingAMovieIn2022 and while it was VERY DATED and wayyyyyyyy too long, I enjoyed it🔥🔥☄️🧯 I just can‘t believe Zac Efron is playing a DAD!!!! Shit, I feel OLD 👵🏼 (edited) 2mo

Now watching (for the first time) the '84 Firestarter adaptation featuring Barrymore as Charlie & David Keith as Andy. I've not watched the recent version featuring Zac Efron, but I've heard it's terrible. They should have cast Padalecki as McGee, as he has an uncanny resemblance to Keith! The book remains one of the most underrated King works & so far the original film is 🔥🔥

Bookzombie It‘s been a while since I have seen the original movie, but I can see Padalecki in the role. He would have been a good fit. 2mo

This reminds me of a cross between Carrie and The Dead Zone. Not as amazing as The Stand, but I really enjoyed it. I wanted the best for little Charlie McGee, I wanted the worst for the bad villain John Rainbird, and I adored Irv and Norma Manders, the farmers who wanted to live peacefully but were brought into the Big Government Secret because they were nice folks. I should rewatch the movie now.

Next up #readingStephenKing: Roadwork!

Great book and truly frightening. It‘s not frightening so much because of Andy and Charlie‘s abilities but because of the twisted government that created them and wants to use them for their own use.

This was fine, entertaining at times but it was too long; felt dated & campy. The writing was a little off color, probably acceptable for the early 80‘s but I don‘t think it would get published today without some editing & polishing. A light pick. 🎉In non book news my niece qualified today and will skate at tomorrow‘s pairs long program. She has no chance to medal but her personal goal was to skate clean & advance and that‘s just what she did💕

Enjoying my King but….it‘s a little too long!!! Lately I find myself growing very impatient with books that are longer than 350 pages or more than 10 hours of audio time. Hoping to wrap this one up before the weekend starts.

CoffeeAndABook Same here!! Just no patience for clunkers. It‘s a weird phenomenon isn‘t it? My husband doesn‘t understand it, he LOVES his tomes, the longer the better. He always says - how strange for someone who reads SO MUCH to shirk the big books! Well 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6mo

This book gripped me from the first page.

Andy and Vicky met at a scientific drug trial being administered by the US government. Neither of them knew what was being injected into them, they just knew that the 200$ volunteer fee was well needed.

No one considered that the fact that after the trial Andy and Vicky would start dating, go on to have Charlie, a baby girl with the ability to start fires.

Fabulous book!

Charlie & her father Andy McGee are being pursued by government agents due to their telekinetic abilities. While a college student Andy participated in a clinical study involving Lot 6, a drug with hallucinogenic properties similar to LSD. Andy meets his future wife & Charlie's mom at the study. Firestarter has great pacing, a truly memorable villain with John Rainbird, & a great relationship between Charlie & her dad.👇

First finished book of 2021 (started 2020). After much reading of technical and heavy history & politics a good story was much needed, and this delivered. Secret government experiments, a father and child trying to survive, a good wholesome old American couple wanting to help out, pyrokinesis and a bit of mind control. Not overly long, disturbing, horrific or gorey and so it suited me well for a holiday read.

This was so much more than a book about a little girl named Charlie who has pyrokinetic powers. It was a great father-daughter book. Stephen King has so much to say about relationships. Unfortunately, he also has a lot to say about our government and what he had to say scared the hell out of me. Even the simple act of an agent stealing mail and the Postman‘s reaction got to me. This was great. I hope to fill in more of my King gaps this year.

Brewychock48 I loved this book. The movie was good too. Drew Barrymore was in or if I remember correctly 3y
Reggie @Brewychock48 yes, she was. She beat out Heather O‘rourke to get the part. Heather was the girl who was in Poltergeist, WHO beat out Drew to get the part in Poltergeist. And they had originally thought about using Jennifer Connely (Labyrinth) because she was 13 but they thought she was too old. Thanks, youtube internet rabbit holes. Lol 3y

BookingitwithSandra I feel like his earlier books were his best until i read 11/22/63 a book based on killing President John F. Kennedy then he got good again. I think for awhile there he was just cranking them out too fast. He lost his originality. Now he‘s back. 3y
Reggie @Tanisha_A there was so much stuff in here that even though it was written more than 30 years ago just feels like it‘s true today. 3y
Reggie @Lifeisasnap My favorite of his is Salem‘s Lot. I haven‘t read 11/22/63. I‘m trying to read more of him this year to fill in the gaps. But I do love his short stories and novellas. I thought Full Dark No Stars was deliciously dark. 3y

I grabbed this King at HPB for just a couple of dollars. I was motivated to look for it by @Reggie earlier post. Definitely dig the cover. 🔥🔥🔥

Blueberry My second Stephen King. My first was Carrie. 3y
vivastory @Blueberry My first was Carrie, too! (It's a great entry point into King, I think) 3y

LeahBergen This is the edition I read, too (back in the 80s)! 3y
Reggie My first King was It, I think, back in high school. I forget how much he has to say about the world. I‘m over half way through with FIrestarter and love it. I like my cover better but they had decades to think about my edition. Happy Reading, Scott! 3y
Butterfinger My only King. I can't handle horror, but I wanted to say I read something of his so I chose sci-fi. 3y

Pickpick

I found this artwork online and really liked it. 💚

This was a re-read for me, but it's been a long time since I traveled with Charlie. I think I loved it more this time around.

Reading King is like talking with an old friend to me, and Charlie is easily one of my favorite literary characters. She's such a complex character who is just struggling to deal with a life she didn't choose.

Leftcoastzen That‘s neat! 3y
Kammbia1 I just got this novel today and will read it on my vacation next week. 3y

My current audiobook while doing chores. I haven't read this one since I was 14. There's been so much already that I didn't remember. I'm excited to revisit Charlie's world.

cherinium One of my faves.💕 3y

Whenever I see this line I automatically think of Game of Thrones and hear it in my head in Sean Bean‘s voice.
