Fairy Tale
Fairy Tale | Stephen King
Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher--for that world or ours. Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was ten, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself--and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it. Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world. King's storytelling in Fairy Tale soars. This is a magnificent and terrifying tale in which good is pitted against overwhelming evil, and a heroic boy--and his dog--must lead the battle. Early in the Pandemic, King asked himself: "What could you write that would make you happy?" "As if my imagination had been waiting for the question to be asked, I saw a vast deserted city--deserted but alive. I saw the empty streets, the haunted buildings, a gargoyle head lying overturned in the street. I saw smashed statues (of what I didn't know, but I eventually found out). I saw a huge, sprawling palace with glass towers so high their tips pierced the clouds. Those images released the story I wanted to tell."

This book was emotionally satisfying for me in a way that a lot of King‘s books aren‘t. Mainly, I think he wrapped it up well, which he doesn‘t always do. Fairy Tale does drag in a few places, especially after Charlie enters the fairy tale realm — some judicious editing would‘ve helped — but it‘s a solid story, and I liked it.

BarkingMadRead I can‘t believe I still haven‘t read this! It‘s been on my shelf since it came out! Leading the #losersclub has me reading all of the older books right now 🤣 luckily, we get to it in the new year because we a almost to the end! 3mo
KathyWheeler @BarkingMadRead I‘ve been bad about keeping up with the #loserclub books. I‘ve also had this since it came out. I was halfway finished and my dog ate my copy! I saw it in the library the other day and was in the mood to finish it. 3mo

The cover is fabulous .... the rest of the book is not! Oh dear, it was only sheer pig headed determination that made me actually finish this .... ugh! Sorry, that is harsh, but it really is just a mish mash of other stories and King even allows that there is nothing new in there, nothing original.... Mind you, everyone is different and I get that some people will love it- fair play! 💖

I read this with my friend bookclub and even managed to convince my partner to join this month! We all enjoyed it and it made for great discussion. The world building was compelling and I was just as fascinated by Charlie's life before he entered the fairy tale world as during his adventures. I think we all agreed that the ending was a bit rushed but otherwise liked the story. Radar 🐕‍🦺 was my favorite character :)

I‘ve been wanting to read this book for a while. Wow! It was LONG! But it was very good. Stephen Kings imagination has no end. I enjoyed reading about the scary, magical world of Empis, and the characters who lived there. Some I will never forget. I loved the parallels this story contained to other stories and fairy tales. I noticed many reference to The Wizard of Oz and to Star Wars. This book was a little too long, but I recommend it.

I really enjoyed this. I'm glad I listened to it as well because the narration was incredible. I've heard it has been optioned by someone at the syfy channel. Rarely do book adaptations do the book justice, but I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it. I absolutely loved the character of Charlie. This is a fantasy story but does have a touch of horror to it too. I can't wait to see how something I imagined is portrayed on the screen.

HotMessJess If you enjoy listening to King, I highly recommend Duma King! The audiobook was thrilling! The narrator was AMAZING. 6mo

This was a boy and his dog story, and I didn‘t know if I‘d like it (not a dog person). It was the best thing about the book.

The real world section develops the characters and story very well. The fairy tale section swaps in a whole new cast that mostly falls flat. And the adventure had no real stakes.

But maybe that‘s the point - fairy tales aren‘t all they‘re cracked up to be.

This is such a wild mixture of intentional pop-culture references. I really loved the 1st half, but it lost its focus as Charlie travels through the fantasy land. It reminded me so much of the movie Return to Oz. It gets very repetitious & I missed certain characters in the 2nd half. I think a different author would have been edited more. Still, the first half was an excellent reminder of King‘s skill.

Reading Stephen King's Fairy Tale while listening to a corresponding playlist on Spotify. Such a magical experience. Usually I feel it's a chore to get through the sometimes overly descriptive beginnings of his novels for the brilliance you know is there when you get to the meat. Put the music with the details and it changes the feel. I felt like I was there with Charlie. I may have to look for playlists for all of my books now. I'm a believer lol

There were parts of this book that had me totally hooked and parts that seemed to drag on and on. I‘m glad I stuck it out and finished it, but the ending was a little bit of a let down. After all of that action, that‘s it? 🤔 Please tell me I‘m not the only one. I don‘t know exactly what I was expecting, or what would have made it better, but I‘m feeling a little let down.

Traci1 I remember liking the first half or so of this one so much and feeling like the last half was a slog. 8mo
Larkken It felt looong. I liked the eldritch horror but it was over so quick in comparison to the rest of the book lol 8mo
Cassafrass I felt the exact same! I just finished it. The audiobook gave it a little more spark with character voices and sounds but geeeze. It took me 3 days to get through and felt like 3 weeks 7mo

I can only surmise that King set out to tell a fantastical, dark quest undertaken by a young man, and to that extent, this book is completely successful. Perhaps the trouble is that the first 200 pages, which I very much enjoyed, are marvelous at establishing a completely different tone. There's something to be said for the contrast, and character development, except Charlie's journey feels somewhat like a devolution or sublimation. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality I find it a little spooky that the fantasy world is one where the better parts of his nature are less necessary to tackle later obstacles. I'm fascinated by the idea that a fantasy world could manipulate an outsider into fulfilling the role the story requires, but I'm not sure an extended gladiatorial/prison montage was required, especially since none of those he met along the way got much in the way of development beyond 'loyal subject' or 'screams on cue'. 2/? 8mo
Robotswithpersonality Similarly, perhaps because I'm not 17, the trajectory between pretty lady to object of affection, even with hints of the woman's complexity as an intended monarch who is also heartbroken over loss, never felt like there was enough time on page with her or between her and Charlie to justify the connection.
Certainly it's a fantasy book liberally sprinkled with horror elements, to the point where elaborating sequences that made me feel grossed out seemed to take priority over any but the main character's development.
Focusing in on the importance of the dog to the story, only to put a pause on any actions involving it for the third quarter of the book felt weird too. 3/?
8mo
Robotswithpersonality I am, however, grateful that the dog didn't die and there was a happy ending, of sorts. 8mo

A teen - who repeatedly makes old people references and then reminds us he watches TCM - travels through a portal to the fairytale world of Empis. The world is a hodge podge of worlds, like Oz, we‘ve read about before. None of the danger felt like it had teeth. A disappointment from a master storyteller.

I start by saying I really loved the book and the story. The only reason I didn‘t give it 5 stars is because I was totally invested in the story until the end. Usually it‘s the opposite for me. The ending fell a little flat and was the only part of the book that didn‘t go into major descriptions. Still solid though! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
