The Duke And I
The Duke And I | Julia Quinn
Simon Basset, the irresistible Duke of Hastings, has hatched a plan to keep himself free from the town?s marriage-minded society mothers. He pretends to be engaged to the lovely Daphne Bridgerton. After all, it isn?t as if the brooding rogue has any real plans to marry - though there is something about the alluring Miss Bridgerton that sets Simon?s heart beating a bit faster. And as for Daphne, surely the clever debutante will attract some very worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable. But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, she soon forgets that their courtship is a complete sham. And now she has to do the impossible and keep herself from losing her heart and soul completely to the handsome hell-raiser who has sworn off marriage forever!

Finished yesterday. It does have an extra epilogue, which I haven't listened to yet.
I really liked the book. It's really focused on Daphne and Simon. Not like in the Netflix series, but I did enjoy both. So for anyone who liked the series: you can read the book, it does give you more insight into the characters. But it's only the main characters!

SusanLee Hello buddy! I‘ve only watched the series and haven‘t read any of the books! 3d
Deifio @SusanLee Yes that's why I thought I'd give the books a try. And it was fun to get a bit more in depth with the two main characters. But I'm not sure I'll read the other books tbh. I think the first book has a very good adaptation. I assume the second one is the same 3d
SusanLee @Deifio ah that sounds good! So I can skip the reading part since there are still so many books out there to be read 😅 2d

The only reason that this was not a straight pan is because the Netflix series from which it is sourced took the material and ran away with improving it. Adaptation? Excellent. Book? Not so much.

I still find myself surprised that I‘m saying that.

This book was really good! I enjoyed it very much. I like that it was told in third person so you know what each person is thinking or feeling. I wouldn‘t describe it as a feel good book but I definitely looked forward to picking it up and it left me smiling more times than not.

I started this book yesterday, got around 25% and I watched the series. Granted, I only watched up to episode 3 with my hubby. Now I don't know whether I should continue reading the book or not 😭😭
Compared to the series, the book characters are a bit flat, and I'm conflicted

#ThoughtfulThursday makes it‘s return! 🌷💐🌷💐🌷

1️⃣📚 I‘m nearly done! It‘s so good!
2️⃣ Yes! I‘m quite a seasonal reader. Romance in Winter/Spring; Stories outside the US in Summer; Horror/Thriller in Autumn. (I read these outside those seasons, too. But the bulk of my TBRs follows seasons, usually).
3️⃣ I look this photo yesterday at a Tulip farm. 8 million tulips from Holland are planted!

Anyone can play! Tagging Littens to start! 🌷

CBee Tulips are one of my favorites!! 🌷🌷 1mo

Not the best read of my life. But a fast one and it helps that I wasn‘t expecting literature, but rather what it was. Was disappointed by the lack of regency feel, if author didn‘t tell us I would have pictured it takes place in America. The romance felt tepid and went in circles a lot. That one scene left a bad taste (and so did the scene in the show). I hear book 2 is better so I‘ll give it another chance.

Between a pick and a so-so. One of those rare occasions were the Netflix series was better than the book! 😆 It was a nice, easy read but I was disappointed by the lack of atmosphere or setting (I love all the lush scenery in the show). I‘ll still give the next book a try though. 👍

When Bridgerton came out, I decided to read the series. The general storyline has similarity but the books have the luxury of focusing on one couple per novel. A lighthearted romance.

Let me start this by saying I watched the show and I still couldn‘t put this book down. If you‘ve seen the show, you know what to expect, but if not, think Darcy and Elizabeth with a twist. Both Daphne and Simon will do things that will upset you, make you laugh and melt your heart. At the end of it all, you can‘t help but want to know more about their life together and cheer them on. I‘m so glad this one had the 2nd epilogue!

2/2 But it was that bad. Unforgivable. Cancelable (had the roles been reversed). But I do believe that unforgivable acts can be forgiven by real people in real relationships. I don‘t know. I do feel that in the best books characters are changed forever by the end. But—and maybe it‘s because I don‘t read enough romance—these characters went from very real to absolutely storybook. It wasn‘t to my taste.

1/2 I both enjoyed and hated this book in so many ways. Many reviews go both ways—5 or 1 star—all depending on how the reader experienced the one controversial scene. Like many of these readers, I despised the heroine for the act. And I despised the author for her careless handling of the aftermath. I even knew it was coming. I thought about quitting the book. But no. I enjoyed the silly banter and froth and thought it couldn‘t be that bad….

I never know what to do with a book that I overall really enjoyed but that has one HUGE problem. I'm going with pick because I'm planning to read more of this series and did enjoy the majority of this book quite a lot - but with a big caveat because there is one plot point that just blew my mind with its wrongness (I'll spoiler it in a comment). On the whole, this had fun banter, not just between the main characters, but with the whole family of ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) siblings (and their mom!). I love happy sibling groups in books, this one just delighted me in that way, although I did feel like Daphne's brothers were a bit over-the-top at various points in the book. Like, I get it. They're protective. Geezy. This one is a little steamier than my personal preference, but to each their own. It's not going to win any awards for groundbreaking thoughtfulness, but if you're just looking for some fun fluff⬇ 3mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) this was a good time. I don't really watch TV so I haven't seen anything of the Netflix adaptation to know if it's any good or anything like the book haha

Librarybelle 2000! Wow…I didn‘t realize it was published over 20 years ago! 😮 3mo
TheAromaofBooks So literally Simon doesn't want children because of various reasons involving the terrible treatment he received from his father growing up. I get Daphne being upset when she found out Simon had lied to her about won't vs can't have children, and definitely think that discussions needed to be had. But the scene where she literally rapes him while he's intoxicated just - what the hell?? I can't even imagine that scene being written the other way ⬇ 3mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) around - can you imagine writing a scene about a woman who doesn't want to have children because of her own childhood trauma, so her husband waits until she's drunk and then forces her to take his seed in hopes of impregnating her?! And it's NEVER ADDRESSED. Daphne NEVER apologizes or even feels remorseful, she's just like “I did what I had to do to try and get a child“ Are you freaking kidding me?! it honestly ruined my good feelings ⬇ 3mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) good feelings about this and made it hard for me to even decide how to rate it. Just a HARD NO on that whole situation. I think it could have been really beautiful if she had done the opposite, purposefully refrained from putting him that position, letting him know that their marriage/relationship is important enough to her that she's willing to wait & work through this issue. Instead, I can't believe he would ever trust her again. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle - Right?! I was quite surprised about this as well! It's so funny to me when something “older“ is suddenly reenergized with popularity haha 3mo
TheSpineView IKR! Some things just can't be ignored! 3mo
coffees @TheAromaofBooks i started reading this bc it blew up but I only got about 1/2 way in bc 1) do i really want to read steamy at work and 2) I'd heard about what you mentioned in spoilers and was like do I really want to read that, and it never came up until way after when book ppl i knew started mentioning it so I'm like hmmm 3mo
EclecticBookLover I read the entire series when I was in high school and had read many other "old school romances" where rape & other nonconsensual actions took place (many from the 90s) so this never seemed out of tge norm of what I read. However, since the show and re weed interest I re-read the first book and was very surprised by Daphne's behavior. Continued 3mo
EclecticBookLover The Bridgertons are wonderful and I don't recall any other similar scenes. I just finished Viscount & liked it even more nearly 20 years after I first read it. 3mo
Laughterhp I think that is why I haven‘t picked up this romance yet. I haven‘t watched the show either, but I heard about the scene you put in the spoiler and I just don‘t want to put myself through that. 3mo
Kshakal I am glad you enjoyed it 🤓 3mo
Nessavamusic I really enjoy this series and the show. Book 1 is my least favorite so I think you will enjoy more in the series. 3mo
Roary47 I‘m glad it was an enjoyable read! 💛 3mo
5feet.of.fury @TheAromaofBooks AGREE I didn‘t read it, but I watched and I was stunned THATS A RAPE, and never she apologizes, and continues to act like it‘s his fault for not telling her…. And then they just move on No no no no 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @TheSpineView @coffees @EclecticBookLover @Laughterhp @Nessavamusic @5feet.of.fury - It was just such a weird scene to include and felt like it could have been handled 100% differently. I'm still looking forward to trying the second book - I've heard a lot of really good things about the series as a whole!! 3mo
Clwojick Great match!! 💖❤️ 3mo
ferskner I felt EXACTLY the same way! I'd heard so much about this series from people I trust and was totally shocked by that scene. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - It just felt like it was such a great opportunity to have a scene where Daphne proves to Simon that she really does love him for who he is and that she's genuinely willing to work through this hard situation with him... and instead she uses him horribly and then we're just supposed to accept that everyone is fine with it. I enjoyed the rest of the book so much and it felt like that just came out of left field. 3mo

Two minds on this. This is the opening act of a very successful series. Ever more since the TV adaptation. It‘s very much of its time. Consent wasn‘t something even in the mind of the readers back in 2000. Not like now. I read the reviews before I got to the plot point that now sticks out like woah. More in the comments.

#romance

writerlibrarian See, I don‘t read Daphne has this really, really smart young woman. She‘s self-centered, loved without any restrictions by her large family. She‘s a good friend, a good sister but a naive young woman. That naivety is the anchor of the book, is the reason the drama exist in the book. Simon is closed off emotionally. His survival depended on this. He‘s a man of his time with a self awareness where self control is everything. (edited) 4mo
writerlibrarian This story is part old school romance where violence, rape were acceptable plot points and part something that was probably new and surprising at the time with characters that are self aware and have a different agency. The friendship between Daphne and Simon is adorable and how they interact and “court” is fun. 4mo
writerlibrarian Still, Daphne knows that her actions were wrong and feels some guilt but not enough to reconsider why they were wrong. Simon dismisses the actions, he got it coming. Sounds so familiar. Of course the reverse situation adds a layer of malaise for us reading this story in 2022.

It‘s a problematic story. Were it written now, I‘m not sure that plot point would be used.

Way out of my comfort zone with a book out if the romance section! This was fine. I have a few gripes. I absolutely hate the virginal storyline but in this particular storyline it works, up until she rapes him which is gross (If the sexes had been reversed people would have been furious). I got a bit bored of them. Could be because I cannot stop comparing it to the show which I love, it really needed all of the side characters to round it out

StayCurious The first one isn‘t my favourite but they do get better. In particular I liked 4mo
shanaqui I'm always so relieved when people catch on to the rape scene! I see too many reviews that just think it's super romantic. 😱 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @shanaqui romantic?? I honestly don't see anything romantic about anything in this book. Especially not that scene. But I might be more sensitive as a child free by choice person because in general I hate when a character firmly states they don't want kids and in the end happily has a baby. Too many people convinced my ex of this when we got married, didn't work out so well for him. 4mo
See All 6 Comments
ChaoticMissAdventures @StayCurious good to know! I bought 1 & 2 to get ready (hold me over!) for season 2. I am going to try A's and see how it goes in a couple of weeks. 4mo
shanaqui @ChaoticMissAdventures But she healed him of trauma! 🤮 I'm totally with you. My wife and I have an agreement that if she wants kids, she's the one bearing them and she can't count on me to be a big part of their lives. I suspect that I'd warm to them, but I can't guarantee it... 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @shanaqui it is so interesting to me when people say “don't worry you will love them once you have them“ like history isn't filled with miserable parents, and abandoned, traumatized, unwanted children! I was adopted, and my mom (adopted mom, never met or care to meet my birth mom) is incredibly supportive of people not wanting to have kids she says - “They are not something you can return if it doesn't work out“

I decided on a reread to refresh my memory of the book after having watched the Netflix series when it came out. I find that Daphne has a lot more depth in the book, and also that the problematic scene is more problematic than I realized when I first read it.

The book is still a mostly very enjoyable read (though that scene moves it to the category of a problematic fav for me and probably overall down to a so-so.) Still a great series!

I only read this as a Book Challenge for my book club. I never ever read romance novels. After many eye rolls at the beginning of the book, I later found myself actually falling in and rather enjoying it. I rather liked my characters in this book and I‘m pretty sure that is why I enjoyed it.

That being said, I still don‘t think this is a genre for me and most likely won‘t continue reading romance novels.

In my opinion, I do think that where the book lacked (supporting characters and world building) the show made up for and vice versa. Where the show lacked (the slow burn romance and honestly most of Daphne's personality and relationship with her siblings) the book definitely made up for. Lady Whistledown was much more of a fixture and driving force in the show I felt. I did enjoy this though and will read the rest of the series!
