Spinning Silver
Spinning Silver | Naomi Novik
A fresh and imaginative retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin fairytale from the bestselling author of Uprooted, called "very enjoyable fantasy with the air of a modern classic" by The New York Times Book Review. Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders... but her father isn't a very good one. Free to lend and reluctant to collect, he has loaned out most of his wife's dowry and left the family on the edge of poverty--until Miryem steps in. Hardening her heart against her fellow villagers' pleas, she sets out to collect what is owed--and finds herself more than up to the task. When her grandfather loans her a pouch of silver pennies, she brings it back full of gold. But having the reputation of being able to change silver to gold can be more trouble than it's worth--especially when her fate becomes tangled with the cold creatures that haunt the wood, and whose king has learned of her reputation and wants to exploit it for reasons Miryem cannot understand. Naomi Novik once again creates a wonderfully rich, multilayered fantasty world that readers will want to return to again and again.

A fabulous fantasy! Well-plotted with great characters; with some elements of the Rumplestiltskin story. It‘s a little hard to follow on audio as there is little notice when the narrator changes- which is often! @MeganAnn thanks for the rec thru #auldlangspine

MeganAnn I‘m glad you liked it! I can imagine audio would be hard to follow with this one as it‘s a lot of changing POVs to keep track of. 3w

I listened to the audio and was interested in the set up of the story, but it was hard to follow and I missed much of the middle section. We switched perspectives in the story a lot, and there was nothing obvious to indicate when the switch happened. Add to that, many (though not all) Russian names I don‘t know and it remained difficult for me to figure out who we were following at various times. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Because it took me a while to figure that out, it took me out of the story, and half the time I never did figure it out. 4w
5feet.of.fury I had trouble with the perspective switch and I read it on kindle… some were too similar and some were added randomly 4w
LibraryCin @5feet.of.fury thx. I often wonc 4w

I hated how every POV was in first-person narration and you had to figure out who this “I“ is this time. I don't know if that was the reason why I couldn't relate to characters. Or was the writing style the reason? Writing was too detailed and wordy, and that made this pretty long read - even though there didn't happen that much. I ended up liking the romance in this book, but that only means the last pages.
I loved the world & magical atmosphere.

Deblovestoread I struggled with this one, too. 2mo

3✨This is one of those stories that POVs becomes confusing if you are not paying attention, and the audiobook made it just as difficult. However, the story about a girl stepping up because he dad was driving their family to poverty, and her story from there was interesting. It gave a Rumpelstiltskin vibe from turning silver to gold. This catches the attention of cruel creatures I had trouble picturing. Overall, I liked the story.

5feet.of.fury I really liked this one, & I completely agree with the POVs, I don‘t know why she just didn‘t put the names as the chapter headings… 4mo
Littlewolf1 I thought you would have enjoyed this one more 4mo
Roary47 @littlewolf I think I would have if I was physically reading it. I was confused who was talking quite a bit through the audio. 4mo

I only have 1 complaint about this: we initially start with the perspectives of Miryem & Wanda… then new perspectives get added & there‘s no demarcation -in the ebook atleast- of who is speaking so you have to read a ways into the page to say “oh it‘s Irina.”
But aside from that we have a great fairy tale retelling with a brave, mostly female, multi faith cast that becomes entangled in a fight between a Staryk Lord (scary fae) & a demon.

Emilymdxn I really want to read this one! 5mo

5feet.of.fury @BookmarkTavern yeah it was good & festive! I could have done without 1 or 2 of the POVs but it was truly odd not to add just a chapter heading. 5mo

After reading A Court of Thorns and Roses a little while ago, I realized a part of the way I was feeling about it could be summed up as: I really wanted to be rereading Spinning Silver instead. And SO I DID! What a good choice - I love the interwoven stories, the slowly revealed world, and the turns the plot takes. Fairytale retelling with a Jewish protagonist, real world and magic interwoven skillfully. Exactly right for me.

This was a February #roll100 title I finished in March and had been languishing on my TBR shelf for a few years now.

I enjoyed Uprooted: I freakin‘ LOVED Spinning Silver! I loved the strong female characters here who refused to allow their circumstances to dictate who they can be. Novik masterfully creates such unique voices that I instantly knew which POV I was reading and those threads are slowly spun together into something very special.

Borrowed this from the library (first time in years I've borrowed a physical book) and am enjoying it. Narrated in 1st person from the POVs of 3 (so far) different young women. Though the POV keeps changing, they don't get mixed up. Their lives are interlinked and they're all strong in their own ways, changing their lives for the better (at least Miryem and Wanda; I've only just met Irina). Still near the beginning but enjoying it.

humouress Not yet halfway through. Miryem's actions have changed the lives of all 3 girls (all around 17-18 yo), initially for the better. About 1/3 in, those actions crystallise to change their lives again, but now they all face danger. A new POV is introduced at that point, in the form of Wanda's youngest brother Stepon.
Getting even more interesting.

A fun, different, and exciting read! I especially loved that the characters in this fairytale reimagining felt real: they had distinct personalities and histories that felt relevant to the time and setting. I liked exploring Wanda, Miryem, and Irina‘s stories, their different goals and drives. The Staryk and their magic were also very intriguing and different for me, but my favorite were their descriptions! Always icy!

Uprooted & Spinning Silver are both fairy tale retellings. Uprooted is about Agnieszka who is sent to the Dragon (the local wizard) as his captive for ten years. In Spinning Silver Miryem takes on the Rumpeslstiltskin tale along with Wanda, Irina & the Staryk (creepy fey).
Both were good but I did like Spinning Silver better.

“Thrice you shall turn silver to gold for me, or be changed to ice yourself.” And so the daughter of a Jewish moneylender is challenged by a king of ice & snow.

I read this 4 years ago, & the atmospheric descriptions, the variety of female characters, the interweaving of fairytale & Russian folklore continue to enchant me. Everything up to the end I adored. But I continue to dislike how Novik writes romances. That‘s a me thing, YMMV. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

I love fairy tales😻This is a perfect book to escape from real world & to get lost in fairy land. It is magical & charming. Good story line & strong female characters. Since the main character is a Jew, there is antisemitism aspects in the story. I like this aspect, & multiple POV. But it is lengthy compared with d story, could‘ve been shorter & crisp. Difficult to follow in audio cos of monotonous narration.

Reads like a fairytale! I loved the many interconnected elements, and it was great having a Jewish main character in the cast. The way the author expertly wove in themes of supportive and toxic family, good and evil (and neutral), magic, antisemitism, misogyny, poverty, and others really called back to folktales. My biggest complaint is that it took me a long time (an hour of listening) to realize the narrative was switching between characters.

It took me an hour to realize this book has two different girls as the POV characters! I don't know if I wasn't paying close enough attention (yes I know their family situations are both different, but I thought things had just changed suddenly), or if it's not very clear in the audiobook. 🤔

Clare-Dragonfly That‘s a common complaint about this book—I imagine it‘s even harder to track on audio. Be prepared for more POVs added later! 2y
Kenyazero @Clare-Dragonfly haha so I noticed! I almost missed a third narrator being added, but this time I was ready for it (mostly because I've been working harder to notice when the narrator switches now that I realized...). Interesting to know it's not just a problem with the audiobook. 2y

I wanted to love this! It's not bad, in fact I really liked the prose. But, I had a difficult time with it. Took me almost a week to finish—even skimmed the last few pages!

Maybe I expected too much because I loved Uprooted? Maybe because of the long chapters? Maybe because of the multi-POV (although they did have distinct voices)?

I don't know. I just didn't enjoy it. 😫

This was my first book by Naomi Novik, and wow! Wow! This was a unique interweaving of the stories of several characters, and I was particularly impressed with how different all of the the characters' voices were as she switched perspectives between them. Kyndrill @BethM Thank you for checking for me. It would be so fun to find someone else in Japan! 2y
Kyndrill @maich Nice to meet you :) 2y
maich @BethM yes I am😂 2y
Nute I have a very tiny social media footprint, Corinna. It is pretty much only Litsy. That‘s okay with me because Litsy is preferred as it centers around my favorite pastime, reading. Everyone here is kind, thoughtful and considerate. The conversations start off about books, but many of them evolve into friendships. I‘m so excited to become acquainted with you.🤗 2y
Kyndrill @Nute Thank you so much! Seeing everyone's posts here is inspiring! I used to love reading but I feel like social media turned me into someone with a short attention span--well, giving it up actually has shown me I can still get absorbed in a good book. I'm so happy to finally get to books I've stocked up on :D I'm so happy to meet you, too😊 2y

⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book is written in first person narrative through several character's eyes, which is jarring at first but doesn't get too confusing. A young Jewish woman trying to keep her family fed while dealing with medieval Europe style BS prejudices inadvertently makes a deal with the murderous king of a magic kingdom and learns to turn silver into gold. Meanwhile, a rich woman is forced to marry a literal monster. They forge an alliance.

"But the world I wanted wasn't the world I lived in, and if I would do nothing until I could repair every terrible thing at once, I would do nothing forever." Really liking this story about divided loyalties and powerful women having to decide what they will inflict on others to protect themselves, their loved ones, their communities, and their country.

I‘m a little bit miffed this book was so long and yet one of the main storylines felt unfinished. However, I was also very impressed. It‘s a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin from multiple, well developed perspectives. It also critiques the antisemitism behind the original fairytale, while also sprinkling original details into her own plot. I‘ll definitely be reading more of Novik‘s work.

3. Today, I am grateful for working from home. It's SO COLD out there.
