Here‘s a little preview of the miniature gingerbread bakery I got in my local indie‘s post-holiday sale. I put in a lot of work on it today because I HAD to finish the tagged book, which was a goddamned delight. I love everybody in this murder family. More, please. #audiocrafting

Pickpick

*not the tagged book- When Ivy Met Mr Holiday isn't in the database
This was as predictable as a fake-dating, holiday rom-com would be expected to be but I liked the characters and it was cute and sweet and Christmasy.

I recently updated my reading stats for the first time since May and confirmed I‘ve dropped the ball on nonfiction this year. To that end, I combed through Hoopla and found the tagged book, which is a fascinating look at the evolving face of queer nightlife, primarily in the UK. Ghaziani‘s an academic, with that audience in mind, but his prose is still accessible to laypeople. I‘m loving it.

Also, I painted some spooky stuff. #audiocrafting

The House of Shattered Wings | Aliette de Bodard
post image

Aliette de Bodard is one of those authors I really, really want to love, but I‘ve never clicked with her longer work. (I‘ve enjoyed some of her short fiction.) Going by this book‘s opening, I think maybe her prose is precise in a way that shuts me out of the story‘s emotional side. Hopefully the rest of the thing‘ll win me over and change my mind.

Also, you‘ll appreciate why I had to buy and immediately assemble this diorama kit. #audiocrafting

Radiance: A Novel | Catherynne M. Valente
post image

Today I started RADIANCE, which feels like a book with which I could become totally obsessed, and I carved my first foam pumpkin. The hot knife tool didn‘t get hot enough to produce the smooth edges it advertised, but the pumpkin‘ll look okay from a distance once I get a better light, and it‘ll never rot. Good times. #audiocrafting

A friend recently gave me a bunch of his mom‘s costume jewelry. She had a huge, loud collection that I‘ve started to transform into suncatchers and wrist tethers for phones.

I‘m so, so close to the end of DUST OF DREAMS. While the series has featured rape from the get-go, this instalment feels ESPECIALLY rapey, with plenty of misogynistic overtones even when people aren‘t violating each other. That‘s soured me on the whole thing. #audiocrafting

xicanti Now I‘m off to scrub mold off a wall, which is a much more appropriate thing to do while listening to a book like this one. 4mo
ImperfectCJ Wow, I just put a bunch of costume jewelry aside to give away (my kids have outgrown using it for dress-up). I never thought about repurposing it like this! I might have to dig back through the giveaway box... 4mo
xicanti @ImperfectCJ it‘s been fun to think of how the different pieces can fit together! I‘m really looking forward to making more suncatchers, since there are a lot of shimmering, translucent beads in the collection. 4mo

SpeculativeFemale I keep thinking about making fun glasses chains out of jewelry like that. Haven't tried it yet. All my jewelry making supplies are in storage for the time being. Just no room at the moment. 🫤 4mo
xicanti @SpeculativeFemale that‘s the thing with projects like this. You need space to spread out. 4mo
humouress Maybe even rain-chains, if you've got some big pieces that can take the weather? 4mo
humouress 😱 I did not know that about 'Malazan'. The first book was fun and I've managed to get around to borrowing the second - but maybe I'll stop there. Thanks for the heads-up. 4mo
xicanti @humouress ooh, I hadn‘t heard of rain chains before, but I like the look of them! I‘ll see if there‘s anything hardy enough. A few components might turn into wind chimes, too. 4mo
xicanti @humouress yeah. 😔 There‘s lots of other stuff between the rapes, of course, but I think most of the books lean into it to one extent or another. There‘s also plenty of other violence against women, on top of the wartime atrocities against everybody. 4mo
