A little pre-book breakfast club (since neither of us has read the book we picked yet but didn‘t want to put off breakfast any longer 💁). Super simple recipe for loaded breakfast potato skins in the latest Smitten Kitchen cookbook, but I‘m a fan of pretty much everything in the book anyway ... I switched out sour cream and bacon for hollandaise and fried squash.

I was bound and determined to read for NYE last night, and I did. I was determined to prove to myself that I‘m not completely broken, so I made a nest, grabbed a book, and went for it.

I‘d say best book in a long time, but the competition wasn‘t fierce. even if I had just read 100 good books, this one would still stand out.

Hoping 2018 is prosperous in heart and kind to everyone. Thank you for always being here, Littens. ❤️

It‘s hilariously sad that I bought this even though I haven‘t read a book since September. Wishful thinking for one day in the future, maybe.

At this point I‘m worried my ability to read a book may never come back.

Notafraidofwords I know the feeling. Sending good vibes. 6y
EvieBee ((Hugs)) It will, when you‘re ready. In the meantime, I always enjoy your book piles and hauls. Those books will be waiting for you. ♥️♥️ 6y
KassKho Have you tried graphic novels or audiobooks? Sometimes those help me when I‘m not in a reading mood. Graphic novels are quick and audiobooks you can just play while doing chores. Best of lucky getting out of the funk ❤️ (edited) 6y

Johanna414 Sometimes you just need to take a step back and focus on other things for awhile. Don‘t put pressure on yourself, and you‘ll get back into reading when you‘re ready. 6y
Lizpixie I know EXACTLY how you feel! I‘m used to reading at least 20 books a month but since, I think August, finishing a book has been rare. I‘ve started so many new books and just given up. I‘m on a roll at the moment though, I ended up just ignoring all my TBR & rereading a well loved series instead. I‘m on Bk7 now & still going. Hope your bookbrain kicks in soon too.❤️ 6y

📚🔜
I‘d really, really like to read this book in November. Still in a major reading slump, and I‘ve picked up so many books lately and laid them down again after a chapter or two. I love this author and don‘t want to do a disservice by forcing myself to read it, yet I‘m not sure what else I‘ll be reading soon ...
#emojinov #nov📚📷er

LiteraryinLawrence I know you‘ve been slumping hard lately. I‘m so sorry! I found the book He Said/She Said to be an unputdownable mystery that was a cut above some of the garden variety thrillers. Or maybe a Liane Moriarty? Hope you‘re taking care of yourself, whether you‘re reading or not. 💚 6y

I need help.
I‘m better, emotionally, but seem to have lost my reading desire. like a switch has been flipped off for MONTHS now. holds come in from the library and then sit until I return them unread. I‘ve started a few but not finished. someone mentioned maybe a really, really good thriller/suspense would help. Any suggestions? loved Behind Her Eyes, find Paula Hawkins hit or miss, loved that original Gone Girl feeling. I‘m almost desperate.

ohyeahthatgirl If I'm in a reading slump i usually have to take a break to take the pressure off. Binge some good TV, podcasts, movies. If I try to force it, I always make it worse. Good luck! 6y
See All 20 Comments
HardcoverHearts Not sure if this will help, but I try to switch up genres, formats and length of books. Just to get the “reading reps” back up so that it‘s part of your habit again. So I may try a novella and a graphic novel or a biography audiobook when I usually prefer fiction. Most of all, it may not be you- there are a lot of crappy books out there so make sure not to feel like you are failing. They are failing you. Best of luck! 6y
slategreyskies What @HardcoverHearts said! Graphic novels or manga are what I dip into when I can‘t read. They help. There‘s a wide selection available on Hoopla too. *hugs* 6y
Shemac77 I really enjoyed the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny. Or the Flavia series by Alan Bradley 6y

ItsAngel Oh oh oh....Into the Darkest Corner I absolutely couldn‘t put down. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto Into the darkest corner is good. I agree with @ItsAngel I also flew through this one after my last reading slump. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto I also flew through this one, but serious trigger warnings here. It's based on a true story and what happens is horrendous. 6y
Cinfhen I‘m glad you‘re doing better...this was a satisfying thriller 6y
Cinfhen And my daughter loved 6y
Simona I don‘t have any suggestions or advice ... I‘m fighting with the reading slump for the second month now and the worst thing to do is - forcing yourself to read. 6y
MrBook Oh no! Hmmm, well, it takes 21 days to form a habit. Force yourself to read 15 minutes a day. Maybe start with lighter, fluffier material? 6y
ValerieAndBooks So good to see you back 💖. Maybe re-visit old favorites? 6y

July was a hard month. I could barely pick up a book, let alone read.

Our second round of IVF is over and done with as of today, and unsuccessful. My body is tired, my heart is broken and my mind needs a break. The only thing I could think to do after getting the news was immerse myself in a book. Two books down today, starting the third.

Reading heals better than whiskey, right?

In the wedding industry, we refer to the day after a large wedding as a hangover. tired, achy, groggy, dehydrated and mentally tired from switching from introvert to extrovert to control a million things all day (timing, guests, timing, guests, timing, guests). I'm in a rut. I don't want to read, I don't want to listen to audiobooks, I don't want to #audiowalk ...
it's a struggle to pick up my current read.
Do you think pausing it and reading something else will help? What do you do when you're in a reading slump?

BarbaraTheBibliophage Reread a favorite. Choose a genre you don't normally pick. Those are a couple of things I remember that have worked for me or been mentioned here before! 😘 7y
drokka I find that usually my reading slumps are caused by non-book related things. When that happens, and if the outside force isn't something I can't control, then I usually go for something quick,l read less often, like a short story or graphic novel where the commitment is maybe not as long. Alternatively, I watch one of my go-to films and hope it works. 7y
Suet624 Honestly, I just let my reading mind rest for a bit. We take in a lot when we read and it can be tiring for the emotions and the mind. I listen to music. Eventually I check out a meaty article in the New Yorker or Vanity Fair and I get interested in reading again. Podcasts help me rest from reading too. (edited) 7y
See All 15 Comments
LauraBeth Sometimes I just take a break from reading for a few days and listen to music or binge watch a tv show. ❤️ 7y
EvieBee I catch up on my shows and take in a graphic novel or two. When in anxious, I definitely can't read so that helps take my mind off things. 7y
Yeah_I_Read I try to switch up genres, if that doesn't help I flip through channels and realize it would probably be easier to find a decent book than finding something decent on tv lol 7y
Well-ReadNeck Short books. 7y
I-read-and-eat I either pick up a new, completely different book, or a take a break from reading altogether and watch a show or go for walks or whatever. 7y
I-read-and-eat Or I pick up a magazine. Something light with short articles. And rereading an old favourite as @BarbaraTheBibliophage already mentioned 7y
Jenni_Capps That's tough.. I was in one for awhile and found that it didn't help if I tried to "force" read so I just took a break all together then when I picked up a book it was one of my favorites and reread it. Good luck! Hope you come out of it soon!! 7y
Heatheringheights Podcasts for me! 7y
Reviewsbylola Usually I try not to force it and if another book really grabs my attention, I give it a try. 7y
Hoopiefoot Don't force it. Do you have any magazines or podcasts to catch up on? TV shows you want to watch? Maybe your reading brain just needs a break. 7y
Rachbb3 I read short stories on Serial Reads. A little at a time. Then I picked a book I knew I would like because of the author. I just came out of a slump. They stink!! 7y
teebe I usually try to spend a lot of time doing something else. Watch a movie or tv series, do some art, train my dog, etc. I can go weeks without reading at all. Then I'll try to ease myself back in with short stories or graphic novels, something that doesn't require a lot of focus. Maybe re-read something. 7y

I *was* enjoying reading this on the new deck until someone just HAD to chase the neighbours chicken out of the yard and got caught in the fence. Now he's sulking and won't leave my lap 🙄

I didn't realize today would be as hard as it is. On top of issues with my own mom, we're less than two months out from our (most likely) last round of IVF. Will I be okay if I never have a child? Absolutely. But knowing that doesn't make today any easier, especially when coupled with major hormones in prep for IVF 🙄Spending the day cuddling my Terrors and listening to audiobooks while I plant things and ignore everyone except The American.

minkyb I had the opposite problem. I could get pregnant but had many miscarriages. Eventually had 2 miracles so channel all those hormones to do their job. I have multiple friends who succeeded on their final try. That said, it is a hell of a rollercoaster ride. I will keep you in my thoughts. 7y

SG2014 As a woman who can't ever have children, I understand that today is hard. Today, when I hear what it means to be a mother, I relate it to being the mother of my kitty, because is my baby after all. 7y

The Kitchen House: A Novel | Kathleen Grissom

WHY DID NO ONE WARN ME ABOUT THE FEELS

This book has been sitting in a TBR pile (mountain) for months and months and months and now I'm so mad that I don't have the sequel in my hands right this instant.

We finally have a back deck! It's almost complete, and it will be such a nice place to read. I love (love love love) reading on the front porch but I do NOT love the neighbours watching me read.

LauraBeth Go get the sequel!!! It was the best book I read last year 😀 7y
Djcjdbx I just listened to a wonderful interview with her on the "What Should I Read Next?" Podcast. You might want to check it out. It was a fun and lively interview!?? 7y
Jenshootsweddings @HouseKitty oh, that's good to know! Thank you! I've been neglecting my book/reading podcasts because they tend to make my TBR even more unmanageable. 7y

Djcjdbx I completely understand that! It's not easy balancing the "necessities of life" - books, podcasts, TV shows, and of course, job and family.? 7y
christineandbooks I second both the recommendation for the podcast with Kathleen Grissom's and the sequel to the book! 7y

I think the eye-roll emoji sums this up best. 🙄🙄🙄
Vapid and annoying.

The best part is that no one in my library book club particularly enjoyed it - usually I'm the odd one out for my opinion, but not this time!

I took this pic at the top of the stairs on my route to the library. I'll always love how close I am to the library!

Meh. I found myself mostly skimming. Great premise, but all over the place in execution.

Pickpick

Spent a brief weekend at the cottage of @jpease89 , where we read, napped, vintage shopped and discussed this book over homemade beignets 😍 she's WAY too good to me.

We both loved the story. The book was an easy and quick read, but the heavy experiences of Saroo aren't glossed over. I haven't watched the movie, but I definitely will now.

Suet624 I told my friends that if they ever made a movie of my life I wanted Dev Patel to play me. That man is so much prettier than me. 7y
britt_brooke The beignets look amazing!! 7y
DivineDiana The movie was fantastic! And yes, Dev Patel was looking so fine! 7y
Libby1 Dec Patel has definitely Longbottomed. 7y

I feel better today, so after I clean the rest of the house (yuck), I'm giving myself the afternoon to curl up and start/finish this in time for Breakfast Club on Sunday.
Still raining ✔️
Did a short #audiowalk in the rain, so at least the dogs are happy ✔️
Feeling better ✔️
And great news, my #audiowalks are paying off - I'm now down to a weight I don't remember being before!

Bks4Wrms That's awesome that your #audiowalks are paying off! 🙌🏻 I should follow your lead! 7y
TheBookStacker That bed/headboard is magnificent 7y
susanw Yay, to all those things! Well, except the rain, we've sure had enough of that! (edited) 7y

The forecast literally says 100% rain until Saturday night, so even though I wasn't feeling well this morning, we hustled to quickly get a long #audio walk in. Not two minutes after our return, it started pouring and hasn't stopped since. This weather is not helping how I feel, but at least the dogs were happy this morning AND I finally finished this audio! Review soon.

lynneamch They have so much personality! It always makes me smile to see them in your posts. Hope you feel better. Pouring rain here, too. 7y

I'll admit, I have been looking forward to this one! I didn't think Girl on the Train was AMAZING, but I did think it was enjoyable and solid.

What about you? Are you looking forward to this one, or could you skip it?

Bks4Wrms I definitely can't skip this one but when I will get to reading it is another question... 7y
melbeautyandbooks I got it from the library yesterday and I started reading it very quickly. So far so good. 7y
