All the Missing Girls
All the Missing Girls | Megan Miranda
Like the spellbinding psychological suspense in "The Girl on the Train "and "Luckiest Girl Alive," Megan Miranda s novel is a nail-biting, breathtaking story about the disappearances of two young women a decade apart told in reverse. It s been ten years since Nicolette Farrell left her rural hometown after her best friend, Corinne, disappeared from Cooley Ridge without a trace. Back again to tie up loose ends and care for her ailing father, Nic is soon plunged into a shocking drama that reawakens Corinne s case and breaks open old wounds long since stitched. The decade-old investigation focused on Nic, her brother Daniel, boyfriend Tyler, and Corinne s boyfriend Jackson. Since then, only Nic has left Cooley Ridge. Daniel and his wife, Laura, are expecting a baby; Jackson works at the town bar; and Tyler is dating Annaleise Carter, Nic s younger neighbor and the group s alibi the night Corinne disappeared. Then, within days of Nic s return, Annaleise goes missing. Told backwards Day 15 to Day 1 from the time Annaleise goes missing, Nic works to unravel the truth about her younger neighbor s disappearance, revealing shocking truths about her friends, her family, and what "really "happened to Corinne that night ten years ago. Like nothing you ve ever read before, "All the Missing Girls" delivers in all the right ways. With twists and turns that lead down dark alleys and dead ends, you may think you re walking a familiar path, but then Megan Miranda turns it all upside down and inside out and leaves us wondering just how far we would be willing to go to protect those we love."

I really wanted to like this book. I was incredibly excited, it seemed like something that was right up my alley, just for it to end in a very Gone Girl way. The “twist” was very predictable from very early on. The author had a terrible habit of repeating herself way too much. There were several phrases that were used so often, I almost quit the book. #thedaybefore #withmyhandsonmyhips

I didn‘t not like this book. I didn‘t like that it was written backwards. It did not keep my attention enough to remember details that were important in the end. The ending was better than the overall book and did surprise me some but the book just didn‘t work for me.

This fast-paced mystery is told backwards. Each chapter is the day before the last one. From the time the 2nd girl went missing, the unreliable narrator works to unravel the truth. I flew through the chapters, wanting to know how things happened. There‘re good twists and some parts I enjoyed but telling a mystery in reverse order, though is intriguing, is rather confusing for me and there were loose ends not mentioned. Didn‘t really work for me.

Cathythoughts Hi Jessie 👋🏻 just to say there is a little something going in the post for you today. ( please if you wouldn‘t mind staying clear of your TBR till this gets to you 😘) XXX 4w

When I am on a long flight, it is essential to have a page turner to keep my mind occupied. It doesn‘t matter what genre, as long as the story is compelling. Here are a few that I know I read on a plane. I love to look for a new book at the airport bookstore, even though I‘ve most likely already packed 3 or 4 books! #airplane #LetsTravelJuly

I finally finished! (I haven‘t had a lot of time to read this week.) Two missing girls, a family broken by secrets and dementia, and a town‘s silence make for a great story. The timeline goes backwards over a two-week timeline for most of the book, and secrets are revealed along the way. This was my first MM book, but it won‘t be my last!

Enjoying my vacation. I am in Maine today! So this is our last state and then back to NY and then back home on Saturday.

I am enjoying All the Missing Girls, i am at that point where the story is starting to make sense with how the author has constructed. I have about 25 maybe 35 pages left. I shoukd finish it up today!

I have done well this week to keep my goal of 15k steps!

The backward timeline of this audiobook confused me a little and there were unfollowed parts of the story. Misleading title too- a little predictable in the end.

Nicolette didn‘t want to #MoveAlongHome to Cooley Ridge to clean out the affairs of her father who has Alzheimer‘s, but she does, and what unfolds in Megan Miranda‘s reverse chronological narrative is a favorite suspense book.

Honestly, I had to include this episode. It is one of the worst Star Trek episodes. I think the writers weren‘t sure how to introduce aliens from the Gamma Quadrant and missed the mark with this one. #StarTrekSummerJune

Megabooks Really interested to see if you have any inside info @tournevis ?? 2mo
tournevis @Megabooks They tried to make the aliens really alien. They succeeded, but it was too high concept that early in the series. I loved that episode, don't get me wrong, but surrealism does not translate well on tv. It's not bad ST, it's surrealist science fiction. 2mo
Megabooks @tournevis I never thought about how it would read as a novel. I can see it working better in print than on TV. 2mo
See All 13 Comments
tournevis @Megabooks It would. One of the things that's happening to them is dissassociation with reality. They experience cognitive dissonance on the inside. Except the viewers experience it too, but from the outside. The double dissonance is not something that easy to pull off on tv or cinema, and will not please everyone. It can't. 2mo
Megabooks @tournevis Have you read Trust Exercise yet? It‘s not SciFi, but it‘s really pushing my boundaries of comfort in a narrative way. I agree with the positive reviews, that at least the first half is really doing something interesting with the whole concept of a novel. 2mo
tournevis @Megabooks Interesting. How does it differ from all the other unreliable narrator tales out there? It sounds like a style exercise, to me. 2mo
Megabooks @tournevis I probably wasn‘t using narrative properly. Not another unreliable narrator (thank god). The first half has centered around a group of students at a suburban/“somewhere other than NYC or LA” performing arts high school. There is a drama teacher who puts them through these exercises and the story evolves as the exercises do and it makes you question manipulation, fidelity, exploitation, etc. I‘m finding it interesting. (edited) 2mo
Megabooks @tournevis I feel terrible describing books for people on here. If I had to do college over again, I would‘ve taken more than the one required literature course. I‘m a scientist/doctor who dabbles in reading literature. 😂 2mo
tournevis @Megabooks Interesting. 2mo
tournevis @Megabooks You're doing fine! 2mo
Megabooks @tournevis taking back the Trust Exercise recommendation. It‘s gotten bogged down in juvenilia. Considering bailing. I can no longer figure out what this book wants to be. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
tournevis @Megabooks If I were to hazard a guess, it's trying to be "literary". 2mo
Megabooks @tournevis probably 🙄🙄 2mo

I had hoped to have this book finished by now but quiet reading time has been very limited lately. I have to say that I enjoyed the first half of this book so much and I thought I would breeze through it but it‘s really just dragging now. I love Miranda‘s writing style and I do hope the ending will redeem the book.

Hoping to finish and have a review up before Wednesday comes to an end.

The USP of this book is its reverse-chronological timeline. Unfortunately that didn‘t work for me. I was constantly reading parts and wondering if I‘d missed something in the chapter, only to realise the details of that particular thread wouldn‘t be revealed until the next chapter. Confused? So was I. The story itself was rather mediocre but on a positive note, the cover is lovely.

DivineDiana I agree with everything you said! 😀 (edited) 5mo

This one was okay.

Pretty predictable - girl goes missing... same kind of story we‘ve heard before.

Except.

It‘s all told in reverse. So we know how it‘s all going to end before finishing the first chapter.

The writing was fantastic, and I definitely appreciated the characters in this book. However, there are definitely more engaging thriller/mysteries in my opinion.
