The Hate U Give
The Hate U Give | Angie Thomas
Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, Angie Thomas’s searing debut about an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances addresses issues of racism and police violence with intelligence, heart, and unflinching honesty. Soon to be a major motion picture from Fox 2000/Temple Hill Productions. Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

It‘s a great story. But I wish the later part of the book especially from the street protest till the ending could have the power of conflicts and characters‘ emotional evolvement transformed onto paper in a more powerful way...I like the screenwriting from the movie version better on those parts...

When I first saw the u in the title of this book, I cringed. As a middleschool teacher, I'm constantly asking my students to spell out "you" on papers and in class discussion posts. However, this book was inescapable, and I knew I'd have to read it.

I'm so glad I did. Now I understand the relevance of the title's spelling and have a great appreciation for Angie Thomas' perspective.

I believe this to be an important YA story and well worth the attention received. I liked the movie adaptation just as much. And the commentary on the DVD is very interesting.

I've now read Top 5 of @American Library Association 2018 List of Challenged or Banned Books. Personal Summer Reading Challenge is to read all 11. Also Goodreads Summer Reading Challenge - The Book is Better(although I haven't seen the movie yet). Definitely a window into world I have never experienced. Powerful message that we all just want to be happy and free.📚

howjessreads Suuuuch a good one! 3w
LiterRohde @howjessreads Which is why I‘ve avoided it for so long. It‘s gotten so much hype and is on a topic off limits to criticism. I think it‘s actually a difficult book to talk about unless everyone in the room agrees. I‘m only 50 pages in and I am already nervous of doing any sort of real review as I can already tell that I don‘t love it as much as 99.5% of Litsy. (edited) 3w

I recommend this despite it‘s between a “Pick” and a “So-So” for me.

Can‘t really say why. It‘s a strong story and most of the characters are authentic but from “Part 2” on the book lost a bit for me. Especially Big Mav more and more seemed in his roots to be like all the other fathers in all the other YA-novels. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I liked it but I don‘t quite follow the hype-train. Maybe ‘cause I‘m too naive.

👆🏼 What⁉️ She beats someone up in school. One of her friends tries to keep her from doing so. And her elder brother sees that, misunderstands it and beats the guy up who wanted to conciliate.

And in the end, she thinks that it‘s cool that her elder brother keeps an eye on her.

Wonderful model of femininity. Not.
And sure, shoot first, ask questions later.

That‘s sooo outdated and sooo annoying.

Glad I was raised differently in those points.

Sunshiny outside reading here.

Girls and boys, can anybody tell me why in this story, too, there has to be that “traditional” “You-are-a-sixteen-year-old-girl-and-I-am-your-elder-brother-so-it‘s-my-responsibility-to-ensure-your-boyfriend-doesn‘t-assault-you-sexually”-narrative⁉️😠

Yeah, parents, elder brothers and authors, this way you easily raise self-conscious girls and women.

Not.

No, Mrs. Thomas, not cool. Definitely not. 😠

What this book tells is so very far from my own life that I constantly shake my head in disbelief. It‘s not that I didn‘t know or believe that things (in the U. S.) are like that, it‘s that I think that most of this behaviour is so unnecessary …

Angie Thomas definitely knows how to keep her reader‘s attention high. And apart from the subject I appreciate the story for not being predictable. At least not to me.

When you read the first chapter of a new book the night before and then continue the story the day after only to realise that you have forgotten some obviously important parts, points, characters introduced on the first pages.

… Flipping back.

I coincidentally found a glossary.

Yeah.

But you publisher-author-girls-and-boys, why can‘t you print a hint in the beginning of the book⁉️😠

Always the same …

The Hate U Give was an excellent read. I was on an emotional rollercoaster throughout the book. This book is a mirror to what‘s going on in America. Police brutality against black|brown people without justice being served. I‘m glad Starr spoke up and told the truth about not just Khalil, but the events of his death. It also shows that code switching is exhausting for black people. I‘m glad Starr was able to be her authentic self by the book‘s end.

This week, we‘re talking about books that are “worth the tears,” and there‘s not a book in my recent memory that is more worth the tears than Angie Thomas‘s The Hate U Give. We‘ve talked a lot about this book on the podcast (check out episodes 41 and 45 for a start!), so I know that Ashley and Sara agree with me.

Unabridged If you haven‘t read this masterpiece, pick it up ASAP! Thomas‘s ability to shine a light on issues of social justice, activism, and police brutality is unparalleled. 1mo

greetings from Miami where I am on a layover on my way to a much needed holiday! Just watched the film on a plane and am reminded anew about what a powerful, nuanced and multi dimensional story this is. As ever the book, with richer back stories and a more complex narrative wins but I was pleasantly surprised by how well the story had been translated and was blown away by the acting in this one. Enough to insist my husband watched it too!

CarolynM Safe travels. Enjoy your holiday. 2mo
