The Hate U Give
The Hate U Give | Angie Thomas
Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, Angie Thomass searing debut about an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances addresses issues of racism and police violence with intelligence, heart, and unflinching honesty. Soon to be a major motion picture from Fox 2000/Temple Hill Productions. Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalils name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr doesor does notsay could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

I added this my TBR ages ago and I shouldn't have left it for so long.

It is the story of Star as she tries to live her life in two worlds, one the 'hood' where she lives and the other the fancy suburban school she attends. Her life is thrown off balance when she witnesses the death of Khalil at the hands of a policeman.

Descriptive and well told. I did this as an audio book and think the narrator really added to the experience.

CarolynM I totally agree about the audio. I'm so glad I did it that way. 1w

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐LOVED THIS! I laughed out loud, cried. This book delt with a lot of the emotional complexities of being black in America...I can't believe I've had this sitting on my shelf so long.

A very relatable read for those that have been subjected to biases, racial profiling, or police misconduct. An inside look at what it's like to be judged for the way you look or opportunities you are afforded.

Whoa. How moving. It is so hard to describe this book, just read it. I chuckled, I teared up, I felt rage. Talk about an in your face, make people uncomfortable when it‘s talked about it, book. So very good and worth every second❤️

Collected some words for #WinterGames2021 and Team #MistletoeManiacs. Plus, another book off my #AVeryMerryBingo! @Jadams1776

I found this book very eye opening. It gave great insight into the feelings of the characters and also a side of the story that most of society today doesn't see. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone around 14 years old and up. I think it's important for teenagers to be educated on the things regarding race that happen in our world today.

This book opened my eyes to how varying perspective can be. From person to person, race to race, perspective is held very differently. This book has reminded me to open my eyes trying to respect and understand others opinion. Not to assume, but learn and talk with someone before making judgments.

This book was so good and really opened my eyes to the reality that some people face and also it cemented the distrust I have for the news and outlets like it. The book really showed that just because it's on the big screen doesn't mean it is true.

While most find this book to be incredibly inspirational and motivating, I'm going to come around with what is probably a decidedly unpopular opinion.
There are so many factors that are glossed over in both the book and the movie that for me it leaves the message that is trying to be told rather shallow and self centered.

The Hate U Give is a book everyone needs to read. It gives a unique perspective from a teenage girl, Starr, who lived through difficult times. Starr had to learn how to cope with the murders of her two best friends. She learned how to use her voice to fight for what she believed in and make a change for the better of the world. I believe that there is something in this book that everyone can take something away from.

The Hate U Give is an incredibly moving and well-written story about a girl who finds her voice in the face of hatred and prejudice. The book provides a whole new perspective for those who have never had to live through events like these, and I truly feel that it's a story that should be read by as many people as possible.

I watched the film before I read the book and I really liked both. I think it's a very good adaptation. Uncle Carlos comes off better in the book though. And I like the insight you get into Starr's thinking.
Thanks @kaysworld1 for the book! 😍

This is an important read. It‘s an honest look at contemporary America but also a look at the ongoing double consciousness faced by marginalized people. Our deadliest weapon is our voice and we need stop holstering it.

Unarmed, Khalil is shot and murdered by a police officer, and his friend Starr was there to witness it from start to finish.

The shooting sparks controversy and protests across the nation, and Starr is thrust into the spotlight as she makes the decision to go public with her account of what truthfully happened.

Eye opening, sometimes tear-jerking, always gripping book about police brutality, drug abuse and racism in America. Captivating.

Twainy Good book … prequel … Concrete Rose is also good! 4mo

Good morning Littens! My morning started off with a series of frustrations so I felt this quote would be a good way to set some intentions for today. I need to remember that my mindset affects so much of my daily life and that it pays to remain positive even in less than ideal situations.

This book wasn‘t subtle about its messages, but I feel like it‘s appropriate in this setting.

kplovesbooks I've been legit afraid to read this... Because with the subject matter I want to love it instantly but what if the book itself sucks?! 🤷🤣 I need to stop overthinking and just read it already!!! 4mo
CollapsingLibrary @kplovesbooks I'll be honest and say the writing itself isn't brilliant and most of my love for the book does come in the messaging. I also originally read it before the hype and the movie, so if you do decide to read it I'd go into it not expecting a literary masterpiece. 4mo
kplovesbooks @CollapsingLibrary I'll keep that in mind. Also I haven't seen the movie yet either; I don't want it to sway how I'll see the book when I get to it! 4mo

⭐️4.5/5

My second review of this novel on Litsy and I was just as captivated my second time reading this book that discusses hard hitting topics such as police brutality, drug abuse, and systemic racism. While the writing isn‘t the most gorgeous prose I‘ve ever read, it‘s important messages and themes, and the fact I think of often despite originally reading it years ago, keep it at a 4.5 star rating.

Since it‘s been awhile, I thought I‘d share my reading journey since I last checked in, broken down by year. My favs read in 2018 were The Hate U Give and A Visit From the Goon Squad. I chipped away at my TBR pile that year with very mixed results, as you can see. I was bummed that I didn‘t break 50 books read, like I had the two previous years.
