Young Jane Young
Young Jane Young | Gabrielle Zevin
The author of the international bestseller The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry returns with a witty, moving novel about what it means to be a woman - especially in the Google age where no secret is safe for long. Aviva Grossman, an ambitious Congressional intern in Florida, makes the life-changing mistake of having an affair with her boss - who is beloved, admired, successful, and very married - and blogging about it. When the affair comes to light, the Congressman doesn't take the fall, but Aviva does, and her life is over before it hardly begins. She becomes a late-night talk show punchline; she is slut-shamed, labelled as fat and ugly, and considered a blight on politics in general. How does one go on after this? In Aviva's case, she sees no way out but to change her name and move to a remote town in Maine. She starts over as a wedding planner, tries to be smarter about her life, and to raise her daughter to be strong and confident. But when, at the urging of others, she decides to run for public office herself, that long-ago mistake trails her via the Internet like a scarlet A. These days, Google guarantees that the past is never, ever, truly past, that everything you've done will live on for everyone to know about for all eternity. And it's only a matter of time until Aviva/Jane's daughter, Ruby, finds out who her mother was, and is, and must decide whether she can still respect her.

I‘m starting my 3 day weekend reading with Young Jane Young. This was popular a couple of years ago on book tube. Has anyone read it?

Hooray for Hoopla! I am hating this book club book, and really don‘t want to waste a Libro fm or Audible credit on the audio just to get through it, so I checked Hoopla AND THEY HAVE IT! Woo hoo! So, I can read something else today and listen to this as background noise at work tomorrow. 🥳🥳🥳🥳

At 22, Aviva Grossman finds herself the central figure in a political sex scandal. This story tells how this pivotal event changed her life and the lives of three other women connected to her. Each one tells their own part of the story. Clever, amusing, and thoroughly entertaining.

Reggie I really liked this one and loved the daughters point of view along with her pen pal shenanigans. 9mo

I chose this as my Y book for #litsyAtoZ and I really enjoyed. It is a story about four women and their lives-they are flawed and real. The story centers around Aviva, a young intern that has an affair with a congressman. We also have timelines from her mother, her daughter, and the congressman‘s wife. They are stories of strength and perseverance.

Reggie I really felt for Ruby and loved her e-mails to her pen pal. 10mo

Aviva has a relation with a congressman and of course she‘s the one to blame when they are caught and all comes out in the open. She starts anew as Jane Young in Maine. The story is told from different POVs, which is quite nice.
It‘s the perfect book to read in the plane and kick off my vacation but it‘s a bit too fluffy and chicklit to my taste.

Really enjoyed this! The structure of having it told in 5 sections from different POVs worked perfectly for this story, & I‘m especially impressed that the author managed to write a super precocious kid who WASN‘T annoying AF like they usually are. The message isn‘t groundbreaking or anything but still important & necessary—that women often get treated far worse than equally “guilty” men, & how we have a twisted obsession w/punishing them. 4/5 ⭐️

“Yes,” she said. “I think that‘s it, Ruby. You‘re very wise.”
“Thank you,” I said.
“How did you get so wise?”
“Books,” I said. “And I spend a lot of time with my mom.”

quote

My mom says the reason people think she is their best friend is because weddings and events give people “the illusion of intimacy.” The “illusion of intimacy” means people “lower their inhibitions.” “Lower their inhibitions” means “people talk and drink and hug too much.”

quote
alisonrose
Young Jane Young | Gabrielle Zevin

How can I blame her for leaving? There was nothing for her in South Florida. These people ... know a few punch lines. They don‘t think they are talking about a human being. They don‘t think they are talking about someone‘s daughter.

I was attracted to this book because I absolutely loved "The Storied Life of AJ Fikry." This is a very different feel. It‘s a fun read, and goes very quickly. It reminded me of "Where'd you go Bernadette?" - it involves mothers and daughters, is funny and quirky, and is told in shifting perspectives and formats. I was looking for something light, but not too light, and this fit the bill perfectly.

The book is a testament to the immortal nature that is Internet Infamy. Nothing can ever be truly forgotten if it can be googled. In the past, moving to a new area would have been enough to start over, but the internet doesn't allow that anymore. When Aviva was young, the Internet was so new, the potential fallout for her indiscretions was unfathomable. Overall I wish I liked the characters more, but I appreciated the nuanced female relationships.

College aged Aviva has an affair with the married congressman she‘s interning for and when everything comes out, receives the lion‘s share of public opinion while the Congressman basically gets off scot-free. This novel is about the mistakes we make when we‘re young and how we come back. I loved the Jewishness of this novel. It‘s about women, and the roles they‘re unfairly given. About moms and daughters and that bond. Just a great book!!!

Aviva Grossman is a young woman who has made a very bad decision. She's had an affair with the married congressman for whom she is an intern. And of course, it comes out. As it always does. What does she do now? Ms. Zevin tells the tale of a sex scandal through the eyes of the women whose lives are impacted. It is surprisingly light and funny for the topic, as well as intelligent, giving lots of food for thought in our new #MeToo era.

“The storied life of A.J Fikrey” was one of my most reliable books to gift. This one doesn‘t tick the same boxes (ie, wouldn‘t be giving to my very conservative friends/relatives) but it still has the same great narrative and relatable characters. The subject matter (a young intern has an affair with a married senator, gets shamed publicly, changes her name and tries to rebuild her life) kept me thinking for a long while after. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
