Burn Baby Burn
Burn Baby Burn | Meg Medina
Nora Lopez is seventeen during the infamous New York summer of 1977, when the city is besieged by arson, a massive blackout, and a serial killer named Son of Sam who shoots young women on the streets. Noras family life isnt going so well either: her bullying brother, Hector, is growing more threatening by the day, her mother is helpless and falling behind on the rent, and her father calls only on holidays. All Nora wants is to turn eighteen and be on her own. And while there is a cute new guy who started working with her at the deli, is dating even worth the risk when the killer likes picking off couples who stay out too late? Award-winning author Meg Medina transports us to a time when New York seemed balanced on a knife-edge, with tempers and temperatures running high, to share the story of a young woman who discovers that the greatest dangers are often closer than we like to admit and the hardest to accept.

I am getting close to being done and hope to have it in the mail this week. I am sorry I have been slacking. New job has take over my life.

On a side note, does anyone know what happened to my book from last round? @OriginalCyn620

whippoorwill815 Oh no it never arrived ??!!! 😢 I mailed it in the middle of July or so, and am almost positive I used your new address (the one for round 6). I‘ll look around but I don‘t think I have the tracking info anymore. It wasn‘t sent back to me or anything. 7d
cwarnier It's ok, I wondered if it got lost in the mail with my move. Thanks for letting me know you tried. If you happen to have the tracking # shoot me an email, if not things happen. 7d
whippoorwill815 I actually found the receipt still in my wallet! The tracking number is 9505 5065 9356 9199 1006 87. It says it was delivered, but where did they put it ?? 7d

This is one of my favorite books set in the #1970s. It‘s got a great main character who is dealing with her own challenges while living in New York during the Son of Sam murders. That element gives it some creepiness but that just makes it more interesting. And of course, the title is a total earworm. #LetsTravelJuly

New York City 1977 lived in terror - Son of Sam was murdering young couples, violence and crime were at all time highs, and a deadly heatwave ripped through the city. All of this serves as a backdrop for Nora‘s story. This well told story examines family struggles, identity & perceptions, &!really a desire and need to break free. Great YA book...from @MallenNC ‘s #FreakyFriday list.

This book was pretty great. Set in the 70s in NYC while a serial killer is on the loose. The story was compelling, however I will admit to getting frustrated with how Nora and her mom treated her younger brother. He's a rotten kid, but they have to tread carefully around him because he's "young" and "growing". ? It was very annoying. Other than that, I enjoyed this book.

Nora's keeping secrets and lying so no one will know what's going on at home. Her younger brother is becoming more violent and abusive. Her mother is in denial and worries about what outsiders think. Set in NYC during the terror of Son of Sam, this is a very chilling novel about very real things.
