With her mama recently dead and her pa sight unseen since birth, fourteen-year-old Amelia is suddenly in charge of her younger brother and sister--and of the family gas station. Harley Blevins, local king and emperor of Standard Oil, is in hot pursuit to clinch his fuel monopoly. To keep him at bay and keep her family out of foster care, Melia must come up with a father--and fast. And so when a hobo rolls out of a passing truck, Melia grabs opportunity by its beard. Can she hold off the hounds till she comes of age?

Stories about kids taking care of themselves always tend to grab my attention. ( I always loved The Boxcar Children and the Tillerman Cycle series' growing up) This was a simple, fast read about 3 kids at the end of the Great Depression who loose their Mom and try to stay afloat by keeping their family gas station running in a small town in rural Virginia.

Bookwormjillk Sounds like a good one to listen to with my kids 2y
HeathHof @Bookwormjillk I'd be hesitant to reccomend it without first mentioning that there is quite a bit of swearing and also some adult themes. 2y
Bookwormjillk @Mynameisacolour good to know, thanks! 2y

July was a hard month. I could barely pick up a book, let alone read.

Our second round of IVF is over and done with as of today, and unsuccessful. My body is tired, my heart is broken and my mind needs a break. The only thing I could think to do after getting the news was immerse myself in a book. Two books down today, starting the third.

Reading heals better than whiskey, right?

Alfoster Both are good👊! Virtual hugs coming your way❤️! 7y

I WANT MORE PEOPLE TO READ THIS BOOK! This is fantastic! The female lead is only 14 but she is STRONG and resilient. Strong themes of perseverance, resilience + family throughout this book, set in Virginia in 1934. I love how the South is depicted here. I love how these characters work so well together and redefine family. Powerful for girls and also for boys. This book takes on gender roles 👏🏻 ALL THE STARS to this one.

Note: Upper MG/YA

LauraBeth Ok - you convinced me 😀 8y
