I really enjoyed this guide to traditional seasonal celebrations. Each one has lots of different activities, some crafts, ideas for celebrating alone and with a group, and what each change means in Celtic star lore, basic themes, customs, etc. It seems like it‘ll be a great resource.

Welp, it‘s been a month, and aside from a few ebooks checked out from the library, I‘ve hardly read a page. I can finally feel the read urge creeping back (thank god!), and I‘m planning on only gardening and reading this long weekend. Fingers crossed that I can move my total up by more than 2 or 3!

CareBear I‘ve been feeling the exact same way and am also hoping this weekend involves some intense reading time! 5mo

A Christmas Journey | Anne Perry
post image
Pickpick

This series is so popular at my library, I‘m glad I waited until after the holidays to start reading. I like Anne Perry‘s work, and I enjoyed this novella set around Christmas. It features a side character, Vespasia, from the Thomas Pitt series (haven‘t read that yet) helping a friend on a sort of mercy mission to the north of 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 to pass along news of a suicide she thinks she played a part in. 3.5 stars, and happy to have read it!

LauraBrook Also, I LOVE the format of these books. A small, squarish hardcover under 200 pages, with nicely spaced lines and margins. I wish more books were printed like this! 6mo
Bookgirl Are you familiar with Anne Perry‘s history? I can‘t bring myself to read her books after seeing Heavenly Creatures 6mo
LauraBrook @Bookgirl Ugh, I was gone for a month. Yes, and it took me about 15 years to read any of her work. I can just about forget it now, and once I‘m actively reading, I‘m just in her worlds. Kind of brutal and unbelievable for an authors life story, though, isn‘t it? I mean, I know it‘s true, but this is probably the best career option for her. I can‘t imagine she was thrilled about the movie when it came out. 5mo

Well after the readathon, my old iPhone decided it didn‘t like Litsy any more. 😒 Yesterday I was finally able to get a new one, and I am so happy to have something that works! Here‘s a pic of Chico just a little while ago, basking in the sun.
In the end, I only read the 3 books I posted about, in about 5H 45M. Not great, but that‘s okay. It got me back into reading again, which is what I was truly hoping for.
Now it‘s coffee time! ☕️

Book three of the #readathon! Despite reading this in two sittings (it‘s well-written and easy to read), I didn‘t like almost every character in this book. It was fun to read, and I especially liked the emails and text messages scattered throughout.
(I‘m also realizing that this is the first BOTM book I‘ve finished despite being a member for years! Totally my bad.)

An interesting look at the trial and lives of two famous and infamous “He-She ladies” in the 1870s. It‘s well-researched, and is full of details and old-fashioned vocabulary, but something about the book as a whole feels a little hollow to me. I‘d still recommend it, especially as I‘m not aware of another book with the same subject matter (barring Oscar Wilde, of course). 3.5 stars. Book 1 done for the #readathon

Readerann That does look interesting. Way to go on finishing your first book! 7mo

Well so far I have read 0 pages. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I have, however, fed the birds, had 3 cups of coffee, made and ate breakfast, fed the cat and cleaned the litter box, talked to my mom, put clean dishes away, taken the garbage out, and written a long letter to a friend. What is wrong with me!?!?!
I‘m finally laying down with Chico on my legs, and am about to dig into this book. I‘ve been on pg 28 for a week. #notthebooksfault #readathon

Looks like it‘s another cold one today! I‘ve got a client this afternoon, so I need to get moving. And in typical Laura fashion, I‘m in a serious mood to do nothing but read! I managed to read a couple of graphic novels last night, and worked on a Vera Stanhope book in bed...I just want to keep on reading to see what happens! I‘ve been sitting here with 100 pages left for almost 2 weeks now. I read a couple of library ebooks, and then spontaneously had my mom stay with me for 8 days (she had the flu, a UTI, and gout in both feet) so any and all time was spent taking care of her, cooking, cleaning, etcetera.
After shoveling out just my front walk, I‘m wiped out and am watching As Time Goes By, with a very happy cat on my side. Hope I can wake up and finish this!

Things are really happening in the Princess Jellyfish world! In this penultimate volume, we have a daring escape from a locked room, casino ups and downs, a peek behind fashion leftovers, a proposal, and several different backstories. This is such a fun manga series, and I‘m so glad that the much-missed Landfall Freight box included the first volume a couple of years ago.

A detailed, yet brief and wide-ranging history of classical music. It‘s meant for kids, but I think it‘s a nice, quick starter for anyone at about 30 pages. There are QR links to listen to music every other page (which I didn‘t use), a nice touch. Originally I bought this for a friends daughters, but based on their personality (and how atrociously they treat books) this will live a better life somewhere else.

Phew! This chunkster took me almost a year to read - no fault of the book or author! Was hard to keep my mind on the story when I already knew what was going on bc of the show. But, thanks to insomnia, I got it finished! It was good, the pages turned easily, I got caught up in whether everyone would escape each little thing, and I can‘t wait to see what happens in the next book.

Well, 2018 sure wasn‘t what I expected. Leaving aside the dumpster fire that was most of Western civilization, on a personal level it was weird. Last month I hit the 5 year anniv. of my father‘s death and mom‘s subsequent breast cancer diagnosis. And somehow I feel like I can take a breath again, & that my mental load is lighter. So I‘m not going to beat myself up for falling 12 books short of my goal. Instead I‘m hoping for a more upbeat year.

vkois88 188 books is an incredible number. I'm sorry you had such a rough path. This past year has left a lot of people raw with emotion, and I'm sincerely hoping things turn around drastically. Here's hoping things only get better for you and you kick this year's goal in the butt ❤❤❤ 10mo

I‘m still awake and reading, and still loving this series. I‘ve had volumes 8 and 9 on my TBR shelf for a bit and I‘m glad I saved them for tonight.
Most of my reading this time around has been mangas and GNs, but with a house guest around it‘s been easier to focus when there are pictures involved.
I‘m hoping I can get another “regular” book read, but since it‘s 2AM and the #readathon ends in 5 hours, that seems unlikely. Shorties to the rescue!

Hello Litsy friends! Not sure how or why it‘s been 2 months since I was last here - it‘s very much my bad.

I‘ve fallen down a YouTube rabbit hole for planners and planning. And desk/office tours and sticker organization. And speed cleaning/decluttering. One good side effect is that I‘m getting rid of stuff more often and at a higher volume. One bad thing is that I‘m buying more stickers!

What a great book! I read the whole thing yesterday (best way to spend a Sunday!), and couldn‘t turn the pages fast enough. In this one, a monk is murdered in a secluded garden in the middle of nowhere, and Gamache and Jean-Guy are sent out to investigate. How so much can happen in just a few days is amazing to me, and it ends on a huge knife-twist to the heart. I both can and can‘t believe it. Instead of spacing out my reads I‘m on the the next!

LauraBrook @whatshesreadingnow Thanks for the rec, I haven‘t read that one yet (I don‘t think). Will request it from the library! 1y
LauraBrook @TheWordJar Wow, I‘m impressed you did your closest! I haven‘t done my clothes yet, at least not the in-season-and-currently-fit-me ones. I know, I am loving those videos! 1y
LauraBrook @BarbaraTheBibliophage Hi!!! It‘s still dragging on, but I‘m hoping it will break this weekend. It‘s supposed to be around 100 and humid, so after work tomorrow my only plans are to read. Fingers crossed! Also, I am loving your blog! 💖 1y
LauraBrook @TiredLibrarian Thanks for the commiseration, I‘m hoping it passes ASAP! TGIF! 1y
LauraBrook @Zelma I love Peter Walsh! I miss his tv show too. I‘ve read his It‘s All Too Much tons of times. Until the last couple of years with all of these new decluttering books came out, he was the only one who would motivate me! Checking everything else out you suggested 🤓🤓🤓 1y
LauraBrook @Christyco125 Lord knows I could always use help in the cleaning department too! Phew, my library card will be getting a workout! Thanks for the recommendation! 1y
Zelma @LauraBrook Clean Sweep was such a good show! I really miss it. Walsh was so good at the psychology of stuff, more than any of those Hoarders therapists. 1y

I‘ve been feeling a little better recently, & have been working on my house, cleaning up & out. And while I firmly believe that one can never have too many books, I‘ve started to feel the weight of my unreads (currently 2,254 physicals) & want to do something about it. Since it‘s humid & gross outside & I suddenly got the day off, I decided to pull a few off of my shelves for some Speed Dating. 20-50 pgs each, & if I‘m not intrigued, out they go!

readordierachel What a great idea! Good luck! 1y
LauraBrook @ReadOrDieRachel Thanks! I‘m hoping I can keep the momentum going for at least one more round today. 🤞🏼 1y
LeahBergen I recently had a big shelf clearing (and I gave many books a “three page scan” before I got rid of them 😂). 1y
See All 15 Comments
2BR02B I do this occasionally too. But wow, that is a mind-boggling number of unread books! 1y
LauraBrook @LeahBergen I‘m impressed! Did you make a decently sized dent in your library? 1y
LauraBrook @2BR02B That‘s what happens when you‘ve always been a book hoarder I MEAN LOVER who really only buys books. The sad part is that I keep finding an oddball here and there that‘s unlisted. And if anything makes me happy, it‘s adding new books to my LibraryThing library! 🤓 1y
LeahBergen @LauraBrook Yep! I got rid of about 200. I try to do this once a year or so. 😆 1y
LauraBrook @LeahBergen You are my idol! 200 in one round? I am majorly impressed. (Also, feel free to send your rejects my way. We don‘t have to tell anyone else. 😉😂😉) 1y
MicheleinPhilly 😳😳😳2200+???? *feels so much better about her TBR; orders more books* 1y
2BR02B @LauraBrook I know what you mean- ever since I discovered the LT app, I'm addicted. Scanning barcodes and hearing the little beep is so satisfying. 1y
DivaDiane Oh wow! You have beat even me and @julesG ! You need the #MountTBR challenge! Join us. It‘s as challenging or as low key as you want it to be. 1y
julesG @DivaDiane Definitely! I could not fit 2000+ physical books into my flat. I'm glad my #MountTBR is mainly made of ebooks (Kindle/Amazon showed me more than 900 books in their cloud, after I installed the Kindle App yesterday - I'm insane! How did I manage to buy so many books? No wonder I never have money.) 1y
Suet624 I‘m feeling the weight of my unread books too. Your post hit home for me. 1y
LauraBrook @suet624 It‘s surprising that we don‘t feel or notice that weight more often, isn‘t it? 1y

Watching Red again this weekend while his parents are Up North. He‘s a cutie, but seems to want to attack my Starbucks straw. Every time I think he‘s forgotten about it, he resurfaces and takes a swipe at it. 😸

In Bookish news, I‘m having a hard time reading lately. Today my eyes are bothering me but I suspect it‘s because it‘s going to humid & 95 and that‘s my least fave kind of weather. Managed to get a few pages of this in, but that‘s it! 😩

Ack, how has it been 3 weeks since my last check-in?!?!? Dang, I have got to stop slacking off.

In that time I have done a BUNCH of home decluttering and cleaning, worked some, and this last Friday I turned 40! 😩😳😳 Can‘t believe there‘s a 4 where a 3 used to be. Here‘s hoping this decade is better than the last!

Yesterday I had my two close friends over at 3AM to watch the royal wedding. Is it bad if I don‘t take down the bunting? I ❤️ it!

Mehso-so

My sad totals. Just managed to finish the last half of a book, and that was it. Yet I was awake for over 20 hours - ?!?!?!?!?!?????? Annoying. I‘m hoping next time I‘ll actually be able to make myself sit down and read. Still, I did finish a book, so it‘s something!

Congrats to my fellow readers, most especially @Readerann ! Next time we will have a more normal readathon! 🤞🏼

AmyG It‘s more than I did..so Yay! 1y
Readerann Hey, you finished a book! 👏 I was determined to do the same. so I stayed up and read until about 3:15 a.m. It wasn‘t easy, but I did it. I agree, we‘ll do better in October! 🤞 1y

Getting some early morning kisses from my boy! Since my last update I ordered a pizza for dinner, took the recycling out, smooched on Chico, and looked online for houses for sale in Hereford and around Inverness for a few hours. I have a problem, I keep imagining that I can afford to move overseas, and I can barely afford living here.
Going to try reading the tagged book and see if it grabs me. Fingers crossed! #notsomuchareadathon

batsy I have that same problem—dreaming about moving abroad when making ends meet here is a problem in itself. Sigh. 1y

I don‘t know what my problem is today, but I just can‘t seem to get into reading! Tomorrow I‘ll probably be all over books, when it doesn‘t “count” any more. Maybe it‘s this crazy bright full moon tonight? Or maybe I just need to embrace the slacker-ness and see what happens? I don‘t know.

Samplergal I haven‘t had the mojo today either. I did finish one book but haven‘t had the attention span tonight. Meh. 1y

C.Perone All of 2018 has been this way for me. Close to 11 hrs of reading used to be a typical Saturday for me. Only got there today because of the read-a-thon push. And now that I finished a book, I‘m thinking I‘m done even tho there‘s still 9 hours to go. So unlike me😕 1y
LeahBergen Embrace that slackerness. 👍🏻 1y
merelybookish Enjoy the moon! 🌕 1y
Kaye Howl at the moon 🌝 while you‘re slacking. Just a reading slump. It‘ll pass. Maybe it‘s the pressure to read as much as possible. Just kick back and try a book, if it doesn‘t click, toss it and look for another. No page count, no hours counted. Just read 1y
Mollyanna Sometimes you just have to go with your mood and not force it. You read at least one page, you connected with other readers. Savor that. 1y
emilyhaldi Ugh, that was my problem today too but I can attribute it to my hangover 🍹🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
Daisey Same here! I felt like reading this morning, but then other things got in the way. I finished an audiobook this afternoon but have no desire to start another. I just want to keep thinking about the one I finished today. 1y

Pickpick

Finally, some actual reading done during the #Readathon! Just managed to read the last half of this book in a little over an hour. Don‘t want to spoil any plot points as this seems to start a slightly different turn for the series, but I will say that I enjoyed it. And now, off to start reading something else!

Thanks to @BookaholicNatty I found out it was Independent Book Store Day, so I rearranged my errands to make a stop! I‘ve wanted to get the tagged book since it was first published, and found the Rachel Ward in the Celtic section. Sounds good to me! Was quietly busy today at Little Read Books in Wauwatosa, and was a nice way to start my to-dos. #ISupportIndies No giveaways at the store, don‘t think they knew about the holiday. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not a great picture, but here are my stacks of TBR Soon. These are ones I‘ve pulled starting last fall to wedge into impromptu reading challenges (that I never really ended up joining), or thinking that I‘d start them the next day. One of my medium-length goals is to actually read these before the fall starts.

Also, we‘re coming up in hour 3 of the #readathon and all I‘ve done is putz around online and on Litsy. Zero pages read. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

LauraBrook @Foragingfantasy That‘s one I‘ve been saving since pre-pub days, and I think this is the time to start it! 1y
LauraBrook @RealLifeReading You‘re right, I shouldn‘t stress about it - but I‘m nothing if not hard on myself. Hope to be turning pages shortly! 1y
LauraBrook @Readerann Thanks, RAT Buddy! 1y
LauraBrook @Zelma You‘re right, it totally is. But I should set a time limit for myself sometimes. Otherwise I‘ll be here for hours at a crack, trying to catch up. It‘s a pleasurably losing battle. 😉😊 1y

Hello friends! I‘ve really missed you!

No idea how it‘s been a month since my last check-in, honestly, in my brain it was just over a week!

I‘ve been reading a little, though not that much this week after getting a molar pulled on Monday. My face/jaw still hurts and is a little swollen, though Advil, ice, and some cell salts are helping. Chico is helping too, of course, and is very happy I‘ve been home a lot.

LauraBrook I‘m planning on participating in Dewey‘s #readathon this weekend, though pretty casually. And I‘ve been reading the tagged book since the start of the year, and even if I don‘t do all of the activities it‘s been helping me feel less anxious and happier. A win! 1y
