The Girl on the Train
The Girl on the Train: A Novel | Paula Hawkins
Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller“Nothing is more addicting than The Girl on the Train.”—Vanity Fair“The Girl on the Train has more fun with unreliable narration than any chiller since Gone Girl. . . . [It] is liable to draw a large, bedazzled readership.”—The New York Times“Like its train, the story blasts through the stagnation of these lives in suburban London and the reader cannot help but turn pages.”—The Boston Globe“Gone Girl fans will devour this psychological thriller.”—People A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives.Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?Compulsively readable, The Girl on the Train is an emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller and an electrifying debut. From the Hardcover edition.

I recently read the book 📖 and watched the movie 🎥 as well. A skilful memory loss thriller! This thriller is atmospheric and suspenseful. Coming to the movie, although various timelines do make it somewhat confusing, plots being disjointed but all the three women hold it all together, especially Emily Blunt for her stunning portrayal of forsakeness!
#Psychological #thriller

rwmg Great review (though I still didn't like the book) 1mo
Niki_Agarwal @rwmg Thanks! Well it did become predictable during the middle but the style of writing and characters deserve appreciation.😉 1mo

No doubt this was a five star read for me! Rachel commutes to London every day passing by the same houses every morning and every evening. One day she sees something that might be useful for a police investigation... or maybe not ! #cozyinthesun #travelreads

ShyBookOwl I recently watched the movie. It was really good, but I haven't read the book. 1mo

Even though there is only one girl on the train, Hawkins flicks back and forth between the perspectives of three female characters. It was a nice change reading the stories of fictional women that were actually written by a woman. Don't get me wrong, this one is hardly at the forefront of feminist literature, but it was still a reasonable twisty thriller. StayCurious @Mishu94 I think it was a bit - dare I say - overrated 😕. I like Emily Blunt in the movie though. 1mo
Mishu94 @StayCurious I felt the same way. All the characters were so whiny about everything 🤭 I haven‘t watched the movie yet 😂 1mo

An enjoyable read. Rachel is a wonderfully unreliable narrator and as a regular train commuter it is easy to recognize the fascination with the houses you pass. Also: I thought the description of Rachel‘s alcoholism was both realistic and depressing. Not everything is believable, but it kept me on my toes and that is what a thriller should do.

rather_be_reading one of my all time favs 1mo
Henrik_Madsen @rather_be_reading I wouldn‘t go that far but it was a good book and an original take. I‘m glad I have finally read it. 1mo

I can hear noises from the street: a police siren, young girls shouting and laughing, bass booming from a passing car. Normal life. But in here, the world is ending. For Scott, the world is ending, and I can't speak. I stand there, mute, helpless, useless

- Rachael

Another disappointment, even worse than Into the Water. The culprit super obvious, way too many voices trying to add their superflous perspectives, and yet again the motto of "All men are basterds, all women meant well but fucked up". As average TV-mystery this might work, but holds no more content than a 90min flick. #dontbelievethehype

rwmg Although I hope I would be more sympathetic in real life, I found the main character in The Girl on The Train such a pain in the you know where I doubt I would have read more than the first few chapters if it hadn't been a book club book. 2mo
Mishu94 @rwmg haha oh nooo! I hope I don‘t find her that much of a pain or else I‘ll be miserable reading it as it really bothers me if I leave a book midway 😂🙄 2mo

#AnglophileApril Day 2: This pageturner has a lot of #RumorHasIt vibe. Most reviewers tend to liken the plot to that of Gone Girl – and I can see the parallels, particularly with the unreliable narrators whose memories are dubious at best. I naturally accompanied my review with traintrack photos while I was in Birmingham and London in 2015. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-axE

Demibom Train tracks give me the creeps. But the book looks promising 5mo

A wardrobe basic; an easy, diary style, holiday read. I read it in a day, it served that purpose. It's a pudding book. Not main course. The premise is relevant - on point - the prose is unsophisticated. That said, I enjoyed the drunkenness of Rachel. So many women are that. I have been. Hence, it's on point. About Rachel, on a train that sees into houses - invents the lives of occupants - then becomes embroiled.

Pretty decent quick read.

mrsmarch No one I know liked Girl on the Train or Gone Girl. It‘s ok. 7mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I hated all the female characters in this book. I like to read about strong women, and I found these all to be weak and pathetic, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I suppose the fact that they are flawed is what makes them relatable to some people. But not me. 7mo

violabrain The Hunger Games. I barely made it through book 1 and quit after about 15 pages of book 2. They were just so badly written I couldn‘t go on. And I agree about The Girl on the Train. 7mo
Megabooks @Crinoline_Laphroaig Yeah, definitely not the best. I did like it more than TGotT (edited) 7mo
Megabooks @Mynameisacolour I did like In a Dark Dark Wood. It was between a pick and a so-so for me. 7mo
Megabooks @mrsmarch Yeah, I‘m seeing a lot of us, which makes me wonder how she sold all those copies! 7mo
Megabooks @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego You took the review out of my mouth!!! The characters were helpless damsels. I don‘t mind an unreliable narrator, but I don‘t want a weak one!! 7mo
Megabooks @edennugget I do love Rainbow Rowell 🤭 If I Stay isn‘t a great book for me either! 7mo
Megabooks @violabrain I think if I read the Hunger Games now I would agree with you, but they were quick and engaging when I was in vet school, so I enjoyed them then. It was a right book, right time thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7mo
mrsmarch @Megabooks Hype. That‘s how. 7mo
sblbooks Lincoln in the Bardo I tried to listen to the audio book but had to bail. 7mo
Susannah Oh yeah, The Girl on the Train was not what I hoped it would be at all. For me, I‘m with @Crinoline_Laphroaig. It‘s Gone Girl. I couldn‘t finish it. (Great question!) (edited) 7mo
Skyler Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. Way too mopey for my tastes and every character was unlikable. 7mo
Megabooks @sblbooks I bailed on audio too, but I enjoyed the print version. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7mo
Megabooks @Susannah Yes! Thanks @TheReadingMermaid it‘s been fun to see everyone‘s responses. 7mo
Megabooks @Skyler It was a terribly mopey book! 7mo
TheReadingMermaid 😘😘💕 7mo
REPollock I hated GotT too. Like, there were only two options for the killer from the beginning and one was eliminated so soon that I found it to be... the opposite of a thriller. Bleh, no thx. 7mo
Vexingcircumstance I hated the Bridget Jones books. I didn‘t really like the Twilight books but I did read them all (and I liked the last one best). I don‘t like any Nicholas Sparks books. I couldn‘t even get through Moby Dick or The Great Gatsby. I don‘t like Jane Austen. I don‘t like a lot of popular stuff lol. 7mo
Megabooks @REPollock Yes, I had it figured out early as well. Not much of a mystery! 7mo
Megabooks @Vexingcircumstance I only read the first Bridget book. I was 🙄🙄🙄 a lot at her vapid diary. I generally don‘t read romance or fantasy so I‘ve never attempted Twilight or Sparks. I keep trying to read classics, but most of them I don‘t like. 7mo
Hooked_on_books I didn‘t get the hype on this book. It was so meh. 7mo
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books Me either! And I love your profile pic!! 7mo
Vexingcircumstance Oh I thought of another lol. Freaking Fifty Shades of Grey. I had a friend who loved it so I gave it a shot. I made it about 1/4 of the way in before I wanted to punch every character in the face. It‘s so bad. 7mo
Vexingcircumstance @Megabooks I only read the first and I think one chapter of the second Bridget book (on the hope that it would be better). I don‘t really like sappy romances either now but I had limited access to books as a pre-teen and Nicholas Sparks was one author that was easy to find places like Walmart or even grocery stores. :/ 7mo
Megabooks @Vexingcircumstance I read the 50 shades trilogy 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ It was bad, but for some reason, I have a soft spot for bad erotica. Totally understand re: Sparks. 7mo
Vexingcircumstance @Megabooks I just couldn‘t stand the writing and the characters and the improper depiction of S&M. I had a lot of issues with Fifty Shades lol. I DO like some erotica though. Any recommendations for some actually good ones? 7mo
Megabooks @Vexingcircumstance I wish! For some reason I only enjoy bad or awkwardly written ones! 😂 I also have a soft spot for rereading 3⭐️ so-so fiction. I‘m weird! 7mo
Vexingcircumstance Eh I mean I love those cheesy cozy mysteries that are kiiiiiiinda all the exact same story and I love urban fantasy like Laurel K Hamilton and Charmaine Harris. And I have often re-read my favorite series by them. So no judgment from me. Lol. 7mo
Megabooks @Vexingcircumstance I just totally spammed your feed with replies! 😂😂 Sorry. I have trouble seeing everyone I follow because I follow close to 10k people. I‘ll definitely be looking in on you, though, if you don‘t mind! 😁 7mo
REPollock It was maddening bc I kept thinking that if the MC weren‘t blackout drunk all the time, she would have known from the get-go what happened. 7mo
Megabooks @REPollock Exactly!!! 7mo
Reviewsbylola I remember as I read this I kept wondering why people were so excited about this one. I found it boring. 7mo
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola Yeah, it just stunk! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7mo

Why is it always about 'The Girl' - on the train, who played with fire, who takes an eye for an eye, who kicked the hornet's nest, with the dragon tattoo, with all the gifts, and 'the girl you left behind' . 😶

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I guess because we still aren‘t “good enough” to be a) women and b)called by our names yet in our own stories...still infantilized as just ‘the girl‘ nameless, easily interchangeable, her name doesn‘t really matter, girl. Boy, that‘s some depressing thoughts there, sorry 😐 9mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Ok, too depressing....maybe we‘ll spin it on its head and say the are reclaiming this diminutive title of just ‘the girl‘ and making that girl badass, kickbutt, nothing to be diminished or forgotten. (edited) 9mo

By inspecting other reviews about this novel I quickly realized, due to its popularity, that they were definitely on either extremes. Readers either hated it or loved it. I fall under the latter.
I was hooked. I know many may not agree with my rating but to each their own.
I was invested in the resolution of the mystery on Blenheim Road and thoroughly enjoyed the way it was written.

Greetings everyone! I am making a podcast! The site is thereturncart.com :) I have posted the first episode. I would be deeply appreciative if you take a listen. Thank you!

A little late, but I‘ve finally finished my last #makemereadit book! 😄 I did enjoy this one. The characters pretty much all got on my nerves in one way or another, and I ended up guessing the ending earlier than I would have liked, but I‘d be lying if I said I wasn‘t entertained. It‘s got its flaws, but it‘s a fun read.

Cinfhen I read this right when it first came out and I really liked it a lot, I wonder how I would have felt if I went in with expectations. I agree, it‘s totally entertaining and makes for a great #beachread 11mo
KTOHARA That‘s one beautiful kitty. Has a mug much like my boy Junior did! I am reading Girl on the Train but I‘m waiting for the climax. I really prefer one POV always. I shall keep on truckin'! 7mo

What a ride! I found the characters a bit pathetic but I was hooked on the story. I got it wrong as to who I thought was the killer, but I was right in some other predictions. It's so fun trying to figure out yourself what happened and I like being wrong because it shows it's not predictable and boring.

Not a fave, but I did really like it.

Girl on the Train | Paula Hawkins

I read this before the film. The film ruined it book so much better loved it

A well written and gripping thriller, hyped up a little bit too much but still a great 4 stars!

Thank you @Rachel.Rencher for the opportunity to win this book through your #7DaysGiveaway. I no longer have a commute as I am disabled. But when I lived in New York I commuted to and from White Plains/Manhattan via train. When I moved into Manhattan I took plenty of subway trains.
