Lion: A Long Way Home
Lion: A Long Way Home | Saroo Brierley
When Saroo Brierley used Google Earth to find his long-lost home town half a world away, he made global headlines. Saroo had become lost on a train in India at the age of five. Not knowing the name of his family or where he was from, he survived for weeks on the streets of Kolkata, before being taken into an orphanage and adopted by a couple in Australia. Despite being happy in his new family, Saroo always wondered about his origins. He spent hours staring at the map of India on his bedroom wall. When he was a young man the advent of Google Earth led him to pour over satellite images of the country for landmarks he recognised. And one day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for. Then he set off on a journey to find his mother. A Long Way Home is a moving and inspirational true story of survival and triumph against incredible odds. It celebrates the importance of never letting go of what drives the human spirit - hope.

What an incredible story.

Saroo was five years old when he got separated from his elder brother at a busy train station in India. He didn't know his surname, his mother's name or even the town where he lived.

From there Saroo eventually ended up in Australia after being adopted overseas.

Amazingly, decades later he found his birth mother.

I feel strongly that from my being a little lost boy with no family to becoming a man with two, everything was meant to happen just the way it happened. And I am profoundly humbled by that thought. - Saroo Brierley

I watched the movie Lion last night, & even though it was fantastic to see Saroo's hometown after trying to imagine what it looked like and to experience the story visually, it was different to the book and practically eliminated Saroo's older brother Kallu. It also brought forth different pieces of information which I'm not sure was true or not, as some aspects of his story were changed.
Anyway, I've been making lots of Indian dishes this week!

Come-read-with-me Sounds really good - thanks for sharing! 4y
NeedsMoreBooks Enjoyed the movie, have to read the book. What did you cook? 😋 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @NeedsMoreBooks This week I've made Cauliflower&Tofu Korma, Eggplant Curry, Spiced Lentil & Rice , Lentil Dahl & some Sweet Potato Chapatis. I do often cook Indian dishes, they are my favorite meals to prepare, so much flavour & you can get away with little or no meat which I love. We are going away for 2 weeks soon & I am already preparing my spice jars to bring along. Last month we went away for 3 days, I was so lost without my Indian spices. 4y

Curiouser_and_curiouser @NeedsMoreBooks Thank you 😊 The family who will be traveling with us for 2 weeks suggested we have an 'Indian cuisine night', and I'm like, what? Just one night? Lol, I think they have no idea that I use my spices almost on a daily basis! 😁 Do you have a favorite dish to cook? 4y
NeedsMoreBooks @Curiouser_and_curiouser I prefer regular cooking but my husband does the fancy stuff, like biryani. I have only been cooking for a few years so everything is an experiment 😅 4y

Happy to drive an hour to and an hour from work today whilst listening to 'Lion' on the way. Countryside and peace in the car.
Fascinating to hear of this young boy's life, which is similar in many ways to so many other millions of little children, except for this particular boys extraordinarily different circumstances, which lead to us having access to his amazing story.
An amazing read, I can't put it down.

This book is amazing. The journey of a five year old who is lost on the streets of Calcutta (Kolkata) to being adopted is very intriguing. Once you start to read this book you are so engrossed that you don't wish to put it down. The story of determination and dedication to find his roots is very inspiring. No matter what the circumstances are always be assured that something good will happen is the message I got from this book. Movie was great

Lion - the movie - was released 4 months before I found my birth mother, so Saroo‘s story really got to me when I watched it the first time. Although the writing was simplistic, I‘m glad I finally got around to reading his book!

Progress with science and technology have led to profound breakthroughs for many adoptees. I found my birth family through Ancestry DNA testing. All I had to go on was my adoption certificate, the agency name & ⬇️⬇️

alisiakae Handwritten notes from the social worker (most of which turned out to be inaccurate). And a first name - Diane - which I found out after petitioning the court for non-identifying info in 2000. Now PA has allowed the release of original birth certificates, which also helps the process of search and reunion! Read for #pop18 6y
LeahBergen Wow! 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook I didn't know there was a movie - my mom was crazy about this book! Wow that's so amazing @4thhouseontheleft ! 6y

Yep!! I can definitely relate to this.

Prior to finding my birth family, I always felt that my identity was incomplete. And yes, it was a feeling of something missing. This is why I don‘t like the narrative of adoption being a clean slate for a child, because it never is, and those feelings of loss, no matter how they manifest, should not be viewed as insignificant or inappropriate.

AmyG I‘m adopted. While I never set out find my birth parents, I always felt something missing in that I don‘t know where my family is from. True quote you posted. (edited) 6y
CouronneDhiver Insightful 6y
alisiakae @AmyG I didn‘t really know where mine was from, either, other than a vague mention of MD for my birth mother, which we had no idea if it was accurate. That‘s why I was shocked to find out my birth mother was from a town 20 minutes from where I grew up in PA! 6y
AmyG Wow that‘s close. 6y

This is a perfect example of why I don‘t like it when publishers change titles and book covers to match a movie release! My cover shows Dev Patel, and while he is definitely lovely to look at 😉, I still prefer original covers.

I am thrilled that this beautiful story was adapted for film because otherwise, I may never have picked it up. I read this over the course of several weeks b/c the early chapters were so difficult to contemplate. How this remarkably industrious 5 year old managed to survive alone on the streets for weeks boggles the mind. Profoundly moving. 5 ⭐️

JamieArc Each year my town has a One Book, One Community event where everyone, including the incoming university freshman class, read the same book. I was excited that this was this year's book, as they also bring in the author for a talk, so I got to meet him and get my book signed. A high moment this year 😍 6y

This novel is simply astounding. It reads like a piece of fiction, only because it's difficult to imagine these events happening, or you don't want to imagine them occurring. Saroo is lucky, profoundly lucky, and he portrays a series of difficult events in the most mature and well-adjusted manner. Truly a remarkable story, of which the movie only portrayed the top layer.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

StellaDz @Jess7 while the movie is very much like the book, it is basically just the surface of the story. The book goes so much deeper and so many other occurrences are discussed that aren't touched in the movie! Definitely a good read! 7y
