'Thriller of the year' Daily Mail When aspiring writer Guinevere Beck strides into the bookstore where Joe works he is instantly smitten. Beck is everything Joe has ever wanted: tough, razor-smart and sexier than his wildest dreams. He'd kill to have her. Soon Beck can't resist her feelings for a guy who seems custom made for her. When a string of macabre incidents tears her world apart there is only one person she can turn to. But there's more to Joe than Beck realises and much more to Beck than her perfect facade. The obsessive relationship quickly spirals into a whirlwind of deadly consequences... A chilling account of unrelenting, terrifying deceit, Caroline Kepnes' You is a thriller more perversely clever and dangerously twisted than any YOU have ever read. 'If you only read one new thriller this year, make it this one. It will stay with you long after you have put it down' Daily Mail 'A fantastically creepy thriller…. The kind of book you put your life on hold for' Glamour 'Clever and chilling' ELLE 'A brilliant tale … It's Gone Girl meets a sinister version of Girls' MARIE CLAIRE 'An addictive thriller!' Closer'I am RIVETED, AGHAST, AROUSED you name it. The rare instance when prose and plot are equally delicious.' Lena Dunham on YOU.

I didn't want to like this, really, because I disliked Providence. Page 9, I'm totally uncomfortable and hooked... 😏

cbowlin1921 A podcast I listen to is reading this and examining it from a more feminist perspective. They have also read Twilight and 50 Shades. It‘s really good and funny and I highly recommend! 2h
IamIamIam @cbowlin1921 I'll definitely check it out! What's the podcast? I only read Twilight as part of a deal, which I was the only one who came through, and stayed as far away as possible from 50 Shades!! 2h

For any fans of You, my favorite podcast put out an episode about why society is so fascinated by psychopaths and true crime, healthy relationships, and stalking in the modern social media era. I laughed and said "hmmm" a lot and really enjoyed this episode!

After watching the Netflix series, i decided to read the book and I am glad i did. Just like in the show, i found myself rooting for Joe until i took time to think about it rationally. As usual, the book is much more detailed than the show and it was do fascinating reading how Joe rationalizes all of his behaviour. Also as usual, things occurred differently in the book than the show so it kept me interested.

AHHHH I AM SO EXCITED! Two more books are coming for the "You" series by Caroline Kepnes. They are some of my favorite audiobooks, narrated by Santino Fontana (and the TV series is great too - Lifetime dropped it but Netflix recently picked it up for season 2, based on Hidden Bodies - comes out later this year I think). May she write faster than GRRM so the series can still follow her excellent plotting.

Clwojick @JohannaRose Really?! 😄I liked Beck more in the book, but when I watched the show I thought she was just as messed up as he was. I definitely root for him at times, but he sure is creepy. This book is so good. I loved reading Joe‘s crazy internal dialogue and the references to books I love and a bookstore that sounds pretty cool (minus that whole glass cage dungeon). Kepnes did an excellent job of showing Joe‘s emotional instability and range from when he thought the relationship was going well to one of the many times when Beck didn‘t respond to a message and he spiraled. Also, crazy Joe has a wicked sense of humor. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I found myself laughing out loud in some parts, nearly biting my nails in others. This book will envelope you in Joe's twisted little mind trying to figure out how his rational works (I mean seriously, the dude is sick AF) and you'll find yourself in a love/hate relationship of your own with Beck.

For me, #GoneGirl received rave reviews and I found myself bored. I hated the characters - I felt there was so much malice but a lack of depth making them unrelatable (Thank GAWD).

ReadingOverSleeping @PurpleyPumpkin Are you reading anything you recommend? 😁 2mo
rretzler Oh, I didn‘t say I hadn‘t had a bad read - I couldn‘t think of any books that particularly disappointed me - ones that I was expecting to like and didn‘t. I don‘t like anything I‘ve read by James Joyce, but I didn‘t expect to and I won‘t read any more by him. I also tend to finish books that I start, rarely do I not finish a book. (con‘t.) 2mo
rretzler I‘m reading a bunch of ongoing series that I enjoy and I guess over 50 years of reading I‘ve figured out specifically what I like. If it‘s an author I‘ve never heard of before, I will look at descriptions, reviews and then maybe try a sample first. I guess perhaps we are using the word disappointed differently. For some reason the last 1/4 of this book took me forever to finish, but otherwise was pretty impressed. All of the twists had been spoiled for me from watching the show on Netflix first, but unique point of view of the narrator still made the book feel so fresh. It‘s not for everyone and the misogyny that threads through the book is difficult to read at times.

It would probably be a pick just for the bookishness.

CindyMyLifeIsLit I liked the series but loved the book (which I read several years ago). I love the bookishness, and my favorite part is Joe‘s book quizzes, administered in the basement! 😂. I admire Kepnes for presenting such a flawed, creepy character and actually making him sympathetic, if not downright likable, all while holding nothing back of his chilling activities. One of my favorites! 2mo
Kimberlone @CindyMyLifeIsLit yes, your review is spot on. And while what Joe does is awful on all levels, I like that the author doesn‘t give Beck a pass for all the awful things she does as well. In fact a big fatal flaw for joe is that he isn‘t able to see past Beck‘s own deceptions 2mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit Yes, I think the fact that Beck turns out to be rather repulsive is another reason we don‘t get quite as upset about Joe‘s shenanigans! 😁 2mo
ReadingOverSleeping I've started this recently and really love it so far! This makes me nervous to get to the end! Lol! I've heard great things about the sequel, Hidden Bodies, though. 2mo

Lizpixie @MicheleinPhilly I think my reaction is because I was stalked by an ex boyfriend when I was 17. He even used to get his mates to watch me at work(Kmart). It was terrifying. So I don‘t find any obsessed suitor “cute”🙅🏻‍♀️ 2mo
MicheleinPhilly 😞That‘s horrible. 2mo
gradcat @Lizpixie So sorry to hear your story—it‘s frightening! I, too, think Joe is extra creepy. To put it in terms used when I was but a young lass, he grosses me out! 🤢 2mo
britt_brooke @Lizpixie @MicheleinPhilly I really hated this book and refuse to watch the tv series. Joe is disgusting. 2mo
MicheleinPhilly @britt_brooke @Lizpixie I enjoyed the book as a thriller and only watched the first couple of episodes of the series which I thought was campy trash. I just can‘t wrap my head around the whole “Isn‘t Joe so dreamy?” phenomenon. No, no he‘s not. I know he‘s a fictional character but I find the adulation disturbing. 2mo

Finished this one and hooooo boy do I have some thoughts. I liked it, but watching the show first definitely impacted my reading. I found the characters to be 10x more hate-able in the book, and man I wish there was more Blythe (who is the best character in the show, in my opinion). I can‘t really say more without spoiling it, but I‘m excited to see where the world of Joe goes next.

This book was entertaining in the sense that it made me want to crawl up into myself and hide forever. Quick read that kept me on my toes. Being in Joe‘s psyche was horrifying yet I couldn‘t quit reading. Now on to the Netflix show!

I think that Joe would be classed as a psycho killer....

Centique I just finished watching the Netflix series and kinda love Joe too 😂 @Cinfhen 2mo
Cinfhen Should I watch the series @Centique ?? Is it different than the books??? 2mo
Centique @Cinfhen I haven‘t read the books sorry! But the ambience of the tv series is lovely - great looking book shop, city streets etc. And Joe is super likeable. 😍 2mo
GatheringBooks i have already seen the tv series. oh how stalker behaviour is normalized - nay, make that romanticized. 2mo
