I‘ve enjoyed some of the Sherlock novels in the past, so I was prepared to enjoy this adventure book—and did! ACD does dinosaur adventures well, and though there‘s a good deal of period racism, it‘s an easy read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Definitely an adventure story with all the elements of one that you‘d want. The idea reminded me of Frankenstein—scientific assertions without believable explanation. I wouldn‘t say Challenger is the opposite of Holmes, like the introduction says. Opposite in appearance, maybe, but not in confidence and derision. There was an annoying amount of white race superiority. I enjoy Doyle‘s writing style, but the story wasn‘t one that really stuck.

Letter format from young journalist, Edward Malone as he takes part in a whirlwind adventure to S America with the esteemed Professor Challenger. Challenger believes to have seen prehistoric beasts previously and is sent with a team to prove his outlandish claims. They find a volcanic plateau in the middle of the Amazon that houses more than just the proclaimed Stegasaurus and Pterodactyl… Will they survive to show truth to the original claims?

I loved the whole first paragraph.

Edward, a newspaper writer, seeks to go on an adventure like no other to impress his girl, Gladys. This adventure takes Edward to an undiscovered part of the world that hosts some creatures never before seen alive before.
Slightly droning, long story that took forever to get to the interesting part.

I'm two chapters in and already a great fan of Professor Challenger:
"I should have thought that only a subhuman intelligence could have failed to grasp the point, but if it really needs amplification, I shall consent to see you at the hour named"

Not for everyone, but I have a soft spot for turn-of-the-century sci-fi. It starts slow, has irracisble characters, and overly verbose tangets, but TBH, I liked those flaws. And I was delighted and surprised by several character moments (pictured). It's colonialist roots and western-civilization superiority-complex obviously don't age well. Recommended for fans of Sherlock Holmes (same author), Jules Verne, or survival stories. #dw2020reads

I keep switching between a print version and an #audiobook of this. It's a slow start, but still enjoyable character building. By chapter 10 the action really kicks in! I've tried 3 different audio versions (2 others from Librovox), and this one is my favorite - narration by Paul Hecht.

Monthly progress: looking good to complete all my goal-books. I just started a couple unplanned books, but they're both short. #audiobooks will help me wrap up Dec... pun intended!

Only 8 minutes left of my private reading-time at the laundromat. Then back home where I'm apparently the most interesting person to talk to, "Mom. MOM. Mom..." ?

I haven‘t read this, and confession time, I‘ve never seen any of the Jurassic Park movies! 🦖

I was optimistic about this one, but I was sorely disappointed. I really like the Sherlock Holmes stories, but this one bored me. I was expecting to be immediately transported to a "lost world" of prehistoric animals. But, instead it started with a journalist, Edward Malone interviewing the explorer, Professor George Challenger. Then they get in a fist fight for some reason; I did not like Challenger's attitude at all. To each his own. ?

I enjoyed this adventure story that I picked up free LAST summer from audiosync... https://www.audiobooksync.com/ they give out free YA and classic audiobooks during the summer months if you have not discovered them already.
Just be forwarned that it is a product of its time, there are big game hunters, ape-men, Indians, negros, half-breeds etc on this adventure romp through the amazon in to the lost world of Pterodactyls, Stegosauruses, etc

I started reading this and then the news about the Amazon fires hit. Now, every time I sit to read, I get this sense of dread. This colonial mindset in this book is a huge reason why these fires started. Colonial greed is ugly. I have to put this one down for my own health.

Found this today at a charity shop. Really looking forward to it as I'm a dinosaur fan. Another for my dinosaur book collection yay 🦕📖🦖 happy reading

What a difference 25 years or so make. I loved this when I read it in my early teen years. Now, it was hard to get through. It is very well written, and this audio book had a great narrator, but I couldn't stand most of the characters. Self righteous, self important, and uncaring. They were quite satisfied with the part they played in the near genocide of an entire race. The description of the lost world was fantastic, the fate of it was tragic.

Anyone else use the app Serial Reader? I just started using it! It breaks down classics into 10-20 minute daily "serials" to make it easier to read. So far so good! #serialreader

I‘ve read this book so many times but it‘s always a delight - filled with humor, chills, some goofy bits, and plenty of adventure

🦕What is your go to bookish item you have to have while reading? 🦕 I haven‘t posted my Mr. Dino bookmark in awhile. He is one of my first bookmarks and my go to whenever I need a bookmark and can‘t decide which to use. My go to bookish items I always need are elastic bookmarks and a blanket. Pretty simple!

I was struggling until i vaguely remembered that this was one of the books i read many years ago when i think i read everything conan doyle had written after exhausting sherlock. A scientific expedition led by prof challenger goes to the Amazon basin to search for a hidden world of dinosaurs. This was the version i had, my life now is regretting getting rid of bks i owned in the past.

Loved this book! Shop local today! What is your favorite bookish item to buy?

Did you know Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a book called The Lost World? It‘s one of my all time favorites. This bookmark is inspired by his novel.

I‘m camping with my family this weekend and finished this while taking an #audiowalk along the edge of the lake.
I enjoyed this fun adventure story with dinosaurs. However, I definitely like The Sherlock Holmes stories more. One thing to note, I can read past racism in older novels by considering the culture in which they were written, but if that is difficult for you, I‘d recommend that you stay away from this one.

Yesterday‘s #audiorun: my farthest distance ever! This is an interesting sci-fi by Arthur Conan Doyle, with an expedition planned around the suspicion of dinosaurs in a remote area of South America. I think it‘s my first non-Sherlock ACD.

Hit 3 hours and 5 mins. Now enjoying a gin and trying to read this while my 11 month old keeps making a grab 😂 He's full of beans and refusing to sleep! On chapter 4. Have also listened to some Strange the Dreamer today and read some Voyager and The Love Letter. Not a chance I'll make 24 hours... #24in48

Picking this up! Love nap times as it gives me an excuse to read 😂 slowly notching up the minutes. Over an hour now. Going to knuckle down and read this while I have some time.

The Lost World is a #journeyStory. Professor Challenger leads an expedition to South America and encounters living prehistoric animals.

Managed to get a bit of reading time in already this morning 😁 audio book for breakfast, and listened on my walk down to work too... getting there now , and I'm actually making a dent 💙💜❤ #25inFive

"Good-night!" said I, and vanished, like all disconsolate and broken-hearted heroes, into the darkness, with grief and rage and laughter all simmering within me like a boiling pot.

I KNEW I didn‘t like Gladys. I was kind of hoping Malone wouldn‘t marry her, but I never thought of her being a faithless liar. In the end, it was a great adventure, and a quick little read. I ended up reading multiple sections a day because I couldn‘t get enough. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone with a sense of adventure, discovery, and imagination. Without that, I would imagine it would just be too far fetched.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I write with a heavy heart, that I was unable to finish this book. The book had a slow pace with no real rush of adventure like I had hoped. And poor Mr. Malone was only seeking adventure to escape the friend zone. While I was excited to read this novel, I have to put it aside as I cannot continue with reading it. Maybe I'll try again someday. #didnotfinish

I do love a good rugby match!!!

Oh Doyle, I do love you so much. Your level is snark is something to aspire to. #tradegin #daydrinking #lostworld #sirarthurconandoyle #doyle
Not a fan of Gladys, in the least, but I love Doyle, so I‘m hoping that she‘s not in the story much after this first chapter.

Back by popular demand. Only have two left out of five. https://www.etsy.com/shop/Bookartbookmarks

Not my usual type of bookmark, but this was too hard to resist. Inspired by one of my favorite books The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle. I made it. This will be in my Etsy shop shortly. #bookart #bookmark #dinosaur #trex #thelostworld

Saying that this is dated is an understatement, but unfortunately I don‘t think this is one of those classics that really hold up very well. I have more faith in Doyle‘s other books. I mostly just read this one because it was inspired by the events depicted in The Lost City of Z.

She's reading to me. Quite well! Last year in August she could hardly spell her name.
The Donald Duck.comic is based on Sir AC Doyle's story.
Not my usual read, but wow! Beautiful, fun, and exciting. Thanks you @SerialReader you've done it again !

50 years before Michael Crichton's books there was this. I'm so confused. Are they intertwined? Did he get his idea from Arthur Doyle? Help, Litsy friends!
