Duchess Goldbatt is a fictional Twitter character voiced by a reclusive real-life writer. Her Grace is a delight to follow. I am a big fan, and I am so excited to read this memoir about how her creator used the Duchess Goldblatt account to reach out and build a loving community of online friends. It has helped them through some tough times. If you‘re not following Her Grace on Twitter, you should do that now. This book is out 7/7/2020. ❤️

The Secret History | Donna Tartt
post image

“It is better to know one book intimately than a hundred superficially.” I was 16 when I first read The Secret History, and it mesmerized me. Here was this lush, sinister novel filled with drugs and sex and murder and love, all being perpetrated by six humans not much older than me, who had recently achieved their freedom from their homes. (Cont. below in six comments)

Liberty And Donna Tartt made being a conflicted new-adult seem so sexy and interesting. I couldn‘t wait until I had conflicted new-adult problems! SPOILER: My new-adult problems were never this sexy or interesting. Nor have I murdered anyone. (Like I‘d admit it anyway.) (cont.) 3w
Liberty As I was saying, I was 16 when I first read The Secret History. It was 1992, the year it came out. And I have reread it every year since then. (That‘s 27 times now for those of you playing along at home.) (cont.) 3w
Liberty Why? Well, first because it was my favorite book as a teenager, and then because it‘s fascinating to see what you pick up on that you may have missed, and also what your brain focuses on at different times in your life. (Cont.) 3w
See All 15 Comments
Liberty And because rereading is comforting. You lose things and pets and people, but books never go away. You can always find it again to read. (Cont.) 3w
Liberty I did in fact lose my first copy. It was the victim of a leaky bottle of engine oil in the trunk on a road trip. Which is too bad, because that copy was amazing. One year I underlined all the instances of ‘the‘ in the book, another year it was every ‘and‘. I had a different highlighter color for each of the six main characters. I underlined my favorite sentences and paragraphs on almost every page. It was a thing of beauty. (Cont.) 3w
Liberty All of this is to say that I found Secret History stickers on Redbubble and I am overjoyed. ❤️📚❤️ 3w
MelissaSue81 I need to read this! What a wonderful ode to this book. 3w
Caterina When I told my high school Latin teacher that I was going to be a classics major in undergrad, he handed me a used copy of this book and told me it captured classics departments perfectly. I was both relieved and disappointed to find that not altogether true. 😂😂😂 Adored this book, unfortunately my original copy is now with an ex... 🤷‍♀️ 3w
Kimberlone I didn‘t read this book until I was an adult, but I have very similar feelings about Perks of Being a Wallflower, which I did read when I was a teenager and felt like a book that was a secret to just me 3w
Hooked_on_books Great story. I‘m glad you shared this. ☺️ 3w
marleed OMG - I loved your story. It‘s such a great testimony to rereading books. And even taking time to savor a single read. I‘m using this year to plow through books because I‘ve never spent a year doing that and always thought I wanted to. I‘m glad I plowed but now as the year comes nearer its end, I think I‘d prefer to plant myself in a book. 3w
batsy I love this 💜 3w

August is Women in Translation Month! I‘m going to attempt to post about a different book each day. 📚
.
One of the most talked about works in translation by a woman of the last few years has to be the Neapolitan quartet! It follows two friends from young childhood to their lives as adults. I still need to watch the HBO adaptation! #womenintranslationmonth 🖤📚🖤

Care package from Rare Bird Books, one of my favorite indie publishers! I am especially excited about this new edition of CRASH because none other than Zadie Smith write the intro. 🔥📚🔥 (Yes, I know putting books by an open flame is a bad idea.😝)

Kappadeemom I have the Bobbi Brown one on my TBR 🍒 2mo

This is an amazing collection of slightly surreal, beautiful stories that was longlisted for both the National Book Award for Translated Literature and the PEN Translation Prize. It‘s by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya and is translated by Anya Migdal. It came out in 2018 from Knopf. #womenintranslationmonth 🖤📚❤️

I want to take a moment to remind you that gods with a little g by Tupelo Hassman is out on Tuesday, and it is Genius with a big G. I don‘t even possess the words in my vocabulary to describe what an amazing experience it was to read this incendiary novel of youth and grief and yearning. It perfectly captures how stupid, immediate, and confusing it feels to be a teenager. I loved it with the heat of a thousand suns. ☀️🔥❤️

SamanthaMarie Stacked!!! That's a compelling review:) 2mo
