Bonfire | Krysten Ritter
From actress, producer, and writer, Krysten Ritter, a psychological suspense novel about a woman forced to confront her past in the wake of small-town corruption It has been ten years since Abby Williams left home and scrubbed away all visible evidence of her small town roots. Now working as an environmental lawyer in Chicago, she has a thriving career, a modern apartment, and her pick of meaningless one-night stands. But when a new case takes her back home to Barrens, Indiana, the life Abby painstakingly created begins to crack. Tasked with investigating Optimal Plastics, the town's most high-profile company and economic heart, Abby begins to find strange connections to Barrens' biggest scandal from more than a decade ago involving the popular Kaycee Mitchell and her closest friends--just before Kaycee disappeared for good. Abby knows the key to solving any case lies in the weak spots, the unanswered questions. But as Abby tries to find out what really happened to Kaycee, she unearths an even more disturbing secret--a ritual called "The Game," which will threaten the reputations, and lives, of the community and risk exposing a darkness that may consume her. With tantalizing twists, slow-burning suspense, and a remote, rural town of just five claustrophobic miles, Bonfire is a dark exploration of the question, can you ever outrun your past?

A fun quick read - not bad for her debut. I liked the way details were given as breadcrumbs, forcing you to draw your own conclusions and guess the real enemy.

WOW! High school trauma haunts Abby Williams to the level of obsession after she's brought back to her hometown to litigate against the local water filtration plant, which is the darling of Barrens, having revitalized the area. Can Abby uncover what happened to Casey, who bullied her relentlessly but was a major player in The Game? Great choice for #Booked2019 #socialmediafocus!

wanderinglynn Was this written by Krysten Ritter the actress, as in Jessica Jones? 6mo
IamIamIam @wanderinglynn The very same! This felt very much like a mash up of Veronica Mars and Jessica Jones, which I think is why I felt very comfortable reading it. It felt like a comfy old hoodie... LOL 6mo

It was definitely not the book I was expecting. It took me about half way to really get into it. It was pretty predictable. I pretty much figured out the ending out early on. But I wasn't disappointed actually. It fit. It wasn't the best book ever, but it wasn't bad. I liked it.

rretzler I wondered what Krysten Ritter would be like as an author, I enjoyed her acting on Jessica Jones 6mo

Meh. Didn‘t live up to the hype. The author tried too hard, to no avail. Much of it was very predictable. A few surprises, but they were too far-fetched. It didn‘t manage to hold my interest, and I just couldn‘t care about what happened.

StephBengtson I agree wholeheartedly. 12mo
IamIamIam I listened to it and felt like it was half Veronica Mars, half Jessica Jones but this could have easily been written by Rob Thomas and could have taken place in Neptune, especially with all the high school drama. Maybe being such a Veronica Mars fan helped but I've definitely read worse books than this! Lol 😁 6mo

Abby returns to her small town home with a group of fellow environmental lawyers to investigate complaints against a local plastics plant which is also a major employer. This is a solid debut, but has some story holes and a self-destructive main character how can be judgmental in a way that really turned me off. I think Ritter can write but needs more seasoning.

Reviewsbylola I wanted to love this. All the hype had me super pumped to read it and I liked the Erin Brockovitch feel but it just didn‘t win me over. 1y

#botmbacklog Book 4 complete! Thanks again @irre!

If Harlan Coben wrote Erin Brokovitch, you might get this story. A thriller about an environmental lawyer investigating a company in her hometown, but the past begins to collide with the present...

Ritter is an adept enough writer to keep the story entertaining and moving along at a good pace. Not good for intense book club discussions but good for warm summer nights. 3/5⭐

🔥About a woman who returns home to a town she tried to forget to solve the town‘s mystery.
🔥Compulsively readable & difficult to put down.
🔥Wholly predictable that left the villain reveal anticlimactic.
🔥Some loose ends weren‘t tied up; felt mildly unpolished.
🔥Character driven.
🔥Lacking in tension & sense of anxiety needed for tight-knit suspense/thriller.
🔥Mostly monotonous tone until last 30-40 pages.
🔥Interesting premise.
🔥3.75/5.

Abby was a loaner in high school, tormented by a group of pretty popular girls, she fled her Indiana hometown and became a lawyer in Chicago. Now she's back in town investigating environmental concerns from the towns largest employer, a plastics manufacturer that basically owns the town. This is a good book, think mean girls meets Erin Brockovich. Abby untangles a web of a conspiracy.

This book started off really strong, a mystery in a small town from years ago, you're bound to get hooked if you like mysteries. But it did start to drone on and on.. Also during the action parts she would often think about her mother, which would ruin the action scenes.
