Bonfire | Krysten Ritter
From actress, producer, and writer, Krysten Ritter, a psychological suspense novel about a woman forced to confront her past in the wake of small-town corruption It has been ten years since Abby Williams left home and scrubbed away all visible evidence of her small town roots. Now working as an environmental lawyer in Chicago, she has a thriving career, a modern apartment, and her pick of meaningless one-night stands. But when a new case takes her back home to Barrens, Indiana, the life Abby painstakingly created begins to crack. Tasked with investigating Optimal Plastics, the town's most high-profile company and economic heart, Abby begins to find strange connections to Barrens' biggest scandal from more than a decade ago involving the popular Kaycee Mitchell and her closest friends--just before Kaycee disappeared for good. Abby knows the key to solving any case lies in the weak spots, the unanswered questions. But as Abby tries to find out what really happened to Kaycee, she unearths an even more disturbing secret--a ritual called "The Game," which will threaten the reputations, and lives, of the community and risk exposing a darkness that may consume her. With tantalizing twists, slow-burning suspense, and a remote, rural town of just five claustrophobic miles, Bonfire is a dark exploration of the question, can you ever outrun your past?

Meh. It‘s just too much. It ended up feeling convoluted to me. Too much going on. Unlikable characters all around. Too many trigger warnings. It was just meh to me.

This book received so much hype on Litsy way back in 2017, so it‘s a belated #BlameItOnLitsy read. Unfortunately, Bonfire is a pretty generic thriller that relies on some overdone tropes (i.e. a main character who returns to her hometown and uncovers a bunch of secrets from the past) and didn‘t offer anything new or exciting. The abundance of subplots, reliance on convenient discoveries, and a rushed ending didn‘t help my enjoyment at all. 2⭐️

wisherwishinguponastar Pretty neat that you have “Jessica Jones‘s” autograph even if the book didn‘t pan out! 2y
candority @booksellerofyourdiscontent I‘ve never watched the show 😭 I‘m going to pass this book along and hopefully whoever gets it is a fan! P.S. I love your Litsy handle! 2y

This was one of the first #BOTM books I got 3 years ago. I‘m hoping to meet my goal of catching up completely by the end of the year. Wish me luck, only 33 to go! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Anyhoo, this wasn‘t terrible for a debut and it had so much potential, but ultimately was very predictable imo. Not so bad I wouldn‘t give another of her books a try. 3⭐️

Gissy One book less! Keep going!📚👍 2y

Book from March #DoubleSpin @TheAromaofBooks It is a thriller so it is better to go blind. A small town, a powerful industry, environment concerns, minor exploitation. I know Abby can be an annoying character, sometimes I couldn't stand her. The end was ok. But the story made me think in one real case which is still under investigation where persons well known have been related with minor abuse. This book surprised me. I enjoyed it 3.75⭐️

I recently saw a #onewordtitle tag pop up in Instagram my feed and I decided that I didn‘t need an invitation to join in on the party! I was surprised by how easy it was to find books with one word titles in my stacks. Most of these are TBR books but I have read two of them. Can you guess which two? What books do you have with one word titles?

WOW! High school trauma haunts Abby Williams to the level of obsession after she's brought back to her hometown to litigate against the local water filtration plant, which is the darling of Barrens, having revitalized the area. Can Abby uncover what happened to Casey, who bullied her relentlessly but was a major player in The Game? Great choice for #Booked2019 #socialmediafocus!

wanderinglynn Was this written by Krysten Ritter the actress, as in Jessica Jones? 3y

It was definitely not the book I was expecting. It took me about half way to really get into it. It was pretty predictable. I pretty much figured out the ending out early on. But I wasn't disappointed actually. It fit. It wasn't the best book ever, but it wasn't bad. I liked it.

rretzler I wondered what Krysten Ritter would be like as an author, I enjoyed her acting on Jessica Jones 3y

Meh. Didn‘t live up to the hype. The author tried too hard, to no avail. Much of it was very predictable. A few surprises, but they were too far-fetched. It didn‘t manage to hold my interest, and I just couldn‘t care about what happened.

IamIamIam I listened to it and felt like it was half Veronica Mars, half Jessica Jones but this could have easily been written by Rob Thomas and could have taken place in Neptune, especially with all the high school drama. Abby returns to her small town home with a group of fellow environmental lawyers to investigate complaints against a local plastics plant which is also a major employer. This is a solid debut, but has some story holes and a self-destructive main character how can be judgmental in a way that really turned me off. I think Ritter can write but needs more seasoning.

#botmbacklog Book 4 complete! Thanks again @irre!

If Harlan Coben wrote Erin Brokovitch, you might get this story. A thriller about an environmental lawyer investigating a company in her hometown, but the past begins to collide with the present...

Ritter is an adept enough writer to keep the story entertaining and moving along at a good pace. Not good for intense book club discussions but good for warm summer nights. 3/5⭐
