What can I say? It's a King novel. There a few parts in there that I felt didn't need to be there, but I think we can all agree that King usually does that; it doesn't stop us from getting the next one, does it? Lol. This book is great. The ending, I felt, was phenomenal. I had a different thought going through my head, so I was pleasantly surprised by the ending. Definitely a 6 out of 5.

I watched the movie for this years ago and have been meaning to read the book ever since. Like many of Stephen King's stories, the book went more in-depth than the movie. This is one of the books he wrote under the pen name “Richard Bachman.“ At one point in the novel a character even said something along the lines of: “This sounds like a Stephen King book.“

I really enjoyed this book. Bachman + gypsy curse = an insane tale. I admit the ending was somewhat predictable. Also my guess is that Thinner really influenced the movie Drag Me To Hell. #losersclub

So... Ladies and Gents, I have a question.

I've started three books, but because of school, I stopped all three. I want to focus on one at a time and finish them now that I'm done with school. Can you help with the order, please?

Thinner by Stephen King
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
Fear the Sky by Stephen Moss (audiobook narrated by RC Bray)

The poll ends at 2:17pm Central time.

Thanks!!!

vivastory 1) Slaughter-House 5 2) Thinner 3) Fear the Sky 4mo

TheBookAddict 1- Fear the Sky 2- Thinner 3- Slaughter- House 5 4mo
KennethTolesJr @vivastory @sprainedbrain @TheBookAddict So, I took what all three of you said into consideration, and it actually comes out to being Fear the Sky, Thinner, then Slaughterhouse-Five. This is because Fear The Sky has the least amount of pages left to be read, which means it has two votes for first. Then, Thinner got two votes for second. Thanks Peeps!! 4mo

Not a favorite. I'm bummed because I loved some of his other books he wrote as Bachman (Running Man and The Long Walk were both excellent). This was a little boring, the main character kind of bland and unlikable, and a lot of the actual action happened "offscreen" and was described later.
Oh well. They can't all be winners.

“Just that one word, sent on the wafting, cloying sweetness of his breath. ‘Thinner.‘ [T]he old Gypsy reaches out and caresses his cheek with one twisted finger. His lips spread open like a wound, showing a few tombstone stumps poking out of his gums. His tongue squirms between them and then slides out to slick his grinning, bitter lips.”

BarbaraBB This is the one he wrote under a pseudonym I learned from @TrishB yesterday. I wonder why? I‘m not such a SK fan but this sounds interesting. 6mo
LiterRohde @BarbaraBB He was writing more than his publisher was willing to put out (one book a year) so he wrote as Richard so he could publish more books. I believe he published 4 books as Bachman he had previously written but not yet published, and then wrote and published Thinner as Bachman, before killing him off (being found out). King then “found” two more books after Bachman‘s death and published them posthumously. (edited) 6mo

Doing a read through of King‘s work is a task. He‘s not my favorite author. He has some great books. Annnnd he has some dogs. This is in between. There‘s some great storytelling and there‘s some very lazy plot holes. It‘s that book where you just think, “why would you do it that way” the whole way through. Not feeling more complete having read this.

S is for Sons of Anarchy, the TV show where King was a guest star during the 3rd season. His character, Bachman, is brought in to dispose of a dead body. I'm not sure if they meant for this scene to be funny, but King delivers his lines in a way that is both creepy, and amusing. The husband has spent days trying to cheer me up by talking about books. Except that he's not a reader. BUT - I have learned that he has read like every Stephen King book and has strong opinions about them (and the movies and how they were adapted). Today it was a two hour discussion about Thinner, y'all. So I'm guessing he's near the end of his SK knowledge? Thinner. Two hours. And yet now I feel strangely compelled to read Thinner 🤔

Hollie That's sweet of him to try! The only King I've read is On Writing and it was fantastic, so it made me want to try one of his fiction works! 2y
britt_brooke Haaa! Love it. 2y
LauraBeth @Hollie oh it's completely sweet of him to try and I'm grateful for it! I'm finding it comical that I've known him for 20 years and I'm just now discovering he's a huge SK nerd 😂I love the SK that I've read but I haven't read everything. It's like he's been suppressing a raging SK fan inside of himself all of these years. He knows his every book! Front and back. And how the screenplay differs. He made Thinner sound like a masterpiece. 2y

LauraBeth @britt_brooke Clearly, I now know that he CAN discuss books. They just have to be SK books 😂 2y
Aleida Stephen King described his books as hamburgers. I think he does himself a tremendous disservice. He is one of the best character authors of our time. As well as a great story teller. I love his work. Read the Stand. 2y
saresmoore Hahahaha! I can't believe he's been sitting on this for so long! 2y
LauraBeth @Aleida I actually think SK is one of the best if not THE best living authors. He's amazingly brilliant! I ❤️ his work also - I need to read more of it. 2y
LauraBeth @saresmoore makes me wonder what else he's sitting on 😂🤔 He could lead a round-table discussion about SK books (and films). 2y

Scurvygirl How can anyone talk about Thinner for two hours? That's amazing! It, Dark Tower or The Stand, easily... I would loved to have heard this conversation! Awesome! 💚💚 2y
BookNAround I read Thinner more than 20 years ago and it creeped me right out but then I'm a huge wimp! And now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think I'll be finishing the pie we have on the counter. (If you read the book, you'll understand this comment.) 2y
minkyb Thinner was awesome!!! 2y
Reggie When SK was writing as Bachman he has some crazy%#*^. Ask your hubby what he thought about Bachman's The Regulators vs. King's Desperation. I had some of my most vivid nightmares as a kid reading The Regulators. 2y
Reggie Lol @BookNAround when people at work or kids in the family are trying to get out of trouble or make deals, I always say,"Just eat your pie, why don't you want to eat your pie?" Nobody ever gets it. 2y
Izai.Amorim That's cool! Makes me wonder what you'll find out in 2037... Maybe he's reading other stuff you don't know about right now? It proves once again that we men need some time to open up and talk about things we cherish... 😎 2y
Ms_T Thinner has been on my TBR for AGES! 2y
LauraBeth @Hollie it's like now he's a big mystery 🤔 2y
LauraBeth @JacqMac it is sweet! He's tried really hard to draw me out of sadness and somehow discussing creepy SK books has worked 😂 2y
LauraBeth @Kris10 he even knows about Joe Hill 😀 2y
LauraBeth @Prairiegirl_reading and @MicheleinPhilly y'all have convinced me to watch the movie for a good laugh 😂 When I ask him to queue it up, that'll make his day! 2y
LauraBeth @Scurvygirl I'm still wondering how this took up 2 hours of conversation- there seemed to be a lot of anecdotal stories mixed in 😂 2y
LauraBeth @BookNAround well now I have to read it to dissuade myself from eating pie 😀 2y
LauraBeth @minkyb I'm going to spend some of my summer reading SK and I'll be sure to include Thinner! 2y
LauraBeth @Reggie that's pretty much what he said about him writing as Bachman! I'll see what he has to say about The Regulators vs. Desperation 😀 2y
LauraBeth @Reggie if they ever get around to releasing a pie emoji, maybe SK should make the announcement 😂 2y
LauraBeth @Izai.Amorim who knows what all he's doing right now 😂 but you're right - it'll come out in 2037 because he's a slow leak...I'm going to encourage him to read Joe Hill - he'd probably enjoy it! He is familiar with him but hasn't read anything by him. 2y
LauraBeth @Ms_T I now really want to read it! Looks like it's a short book, too 😀 2y
TrishB Lol 😂 It's not even his best work....imagine how long he could talk about The Stand 😀 2y

I am most definitely reading Thinner by Stephen King for my modern era book, but I need a classic one (far more than 30 years old) now. I have a very long list, but I can't decide.
