The premise and setting were cool but the plot itself had a few too many cliches and the main character was kinda inconsistent.

cathipink This book totally bummed me out because I was right there with it for 2/3 of the book.... and then it went completely off the rails for the last 30 pages. Lots of cool ideas though, and I loved the genre mashup. 3w

What the hell just happened? I finished this book in a day and a half! It was a blast. Clever and trippy.
I didn't quite get the emotional impact that I think the author was going for. Maybe I read it too fast, or maybe it was too fast-paced (I felt like I was reading a movie for like, three quarters of it). But I had a great time overall 😆

This was like watching a parade of entertainingly terrible people. Maybe "terrible" is a little strong. Endearingly unsympathetic might be better. It was also humorous at times, and really painted a beautiful picture of Savannah. Hard to believe it's nonfiction!

#SelfImprovementSept | Day 1: #ReadingGoals

I'm not good at planning a reading list more than a book ahead at a time (sometimes not even that much) but I definitely want to read this one this month. Sometimes I have to push myself to set aside the dragons and spaceships for something literary, but I'm always very glad when I do!

Suelizbeth I am not enjoying this book as much as The Secret History, so I've set it aside, for now. I will get back to it eventually, but there are other books that I really want to read, and this is not one of them, at present. 1mo
j9brown @Suelizbeth We're all too short on free time to stick with a book we're not enjoying! I haven't read the Secret History so I'm not sure what to expect. Maybe I'm just getting sucked into the hype around the movie 🤷‍♀️😁 1mo

Wow. This book's got *layers*. It's very worthwhile to push through the initial slog of Steven's musings about what makes a great butler (and it's actually all necessary to understanding him later). You get to know him by what he doesn't say as much as anything else. Really masterful writing. Plus I've got a soft spot for some stuffy style British prose. I just loved it.
I kind of want to just turn around and read it again.

Loved this, loved the series. This book got a bit more criticism than the others because it's short on plot and it's more slice-of-life than the previous books, but I enjoyed it a lot, I'm into that style of book when it's done well. And it was. Becky Chambers is a definite auto-buy for me!

Thanks to @WilliamMorrowBooks for the #arc!
This had a fantasy feel to it, even though it was set in the real world, in a future where most of the planet has flooded. Wasn't totally feeling it at first, but I was drawn in by the setting and the action and adventure. Myra felt very real, as did her daughter. Some of the other characters could have used a little more development, though. Would read more from this author.

WilliamMorrowBooks Great capsule review! Thank you. 2mo
KatieDid927 Weighing in now as I finally finished it, we mostly agree although it seems like you may have enjoyed it a little more than I did. I found Myra to be tedious by the end. Her inner conflicts were repetitive, but yes Pearl was awesome and other characters were under-developed. 1mo
j9brown @KatieDid927 Haha I was just about to reply to your review! I thought Pearl was so age-appropriately-written, it was actually really great, so many authors write children characters annoyingly wrong. I had other criticisms but I let them slide because I started thinking of it as a pirate adventure and I just went along for the ride 😝 1mo
See All 6 Comments
KatieDid927 @j9brown Fair, and it definitely was a pirate adventure. The extended part of my review explains that I finally realized that ocean adventuring just doesn't do it for me. It's my own personal preference, but I totally get why other people dig it. 1mo
j9brown @KatieDid927 But I thought you were a big Moby Dick fan! 1mo

Oh boy. I have a feeling this is going to be a big unpopular opinion about this book, because it is very emotional. Slaps you right in the feelings quite a bit.
But I just couldn't buy Gentry. I felt like the author just took some convenient bits of autism and some romantic ideas about schitzophrenia and mashed them into this unrealistic character. Please correct me if I'm wrong! I'm not and expert and I wanted to love this book! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

j9brown But I just don't think autism or schitzophrenia work that way, and it's important to portray these things with accuracy.
I also didn't love how it switched POVs but each one was in first person.
I recommend this book anyway, it's very emotional, good story, good characters overall. Maybe it just isn't my thing.
2mo
KatieDid927 Oh very interesting. I got it as an add-on, but this doesn‘t diminish my interest in reading it. A thoughtful review! 2mo
j9brown @KatieDid927 It's still definitely worth reading and lots of people are going to love it. My sister gets very worked up about unrealistic portrayals of autism and I guess it's rubbed off on me! Atypical on Netflix is the only one she's ever approved of. 2mo

This was way more of a page-turner than it should have been for what the story was. There wasn't that much actually happening, yet I got sucked right into these characters' lives.
This starts out as a friend and family drama, but it became intertwined with some real insidious societal issues, both inside each family and more broadly in the town.
I do feel a tad unsatisfied with the ending but I can't put my finger on why.
A very good #botm pick!

I'm torn! The setting was awesome and the main character was kick-ass. But it was a tad to graphic even for me. And the use of magic didn't always make sense - there were places where it wasn't used when it should have been, and places where it was too conveniently powerful.
Giving it a Pick anyway, I was invested in all the characters regardless of my issues with the plot. And the setting really was super cool and unique.

Not a favorite. I'm bummed because I loved some of his other books he wrote as Bachman (Running Man and The Long Walk were both excellent). This was a little boring, the main character kind of bland and unlikable, and a lot of the actual action happened "offscreen" and was described later.
Oh well. They can't all be winners.
