This was a boy and his dog story, and I didn‘t know if I‘d like it (not a dog person). It was the best thing about the book.

The real world section develops the characters and story very well. The fairy tale section swaps in a whole new cast that mostly falls flat. And the adventure had no real stakes.

But maybe that‘s the point - fairy tales aren‘t all they‘re cracked up to be.

The message is simple enough - yet quite profound if you truly grasp its full potential. Your story - as it is - is important. Almost a year later, I finally finished this book. Amidst a pandemic reading slump, the monotony of daily life, and my own suffering, this book of big and small questions was important, though never easy, for me to read.

CBee It‘s nice to see you posting again. I also loved this book, and understand how it could take a while to get through. So many things to think about. I hope you are doing well 💚 11mo
LiterRohde @CBee Thanks for the kind words. 🧡 There were long stretches during the past few years where my brain refused to read, so it‘s nice to be posting again about books I‘m actually reading. 11mo
LiterRohde @CBee A mix of everything I mentioned in my post along with the fact that it was a library book which I kept running out of time to read and therefore it had to go back - sometimes for months - all conspired against me. Hence, the ridiculously long read time. Each time I got it back it felt like starting over since each of the POVs were so connected yet spread out. I think the struggle was worth it though. As you said, much to think about. 🤔 (edited) 11mo

CBee @LiterRohde I can 100% understand that. The past few years have been so difficult 🙁 Hooray for reading again, and hooray for finishing this one! I honestly wish I‘d taken more time with it - I didn‘t read it very fast, but I still would‘ve liked to savor it more. 11mo

Simple enough idea - the end was obvious from the start; not a lot of surprises. But while the idea is simple, the execution - not so much. That‘s the value of this book for me. Life is scrutinized through the lens of comparison, and the photo taken often times develops into criticism, doubt, anger, fear - you know, all the good stuff that keeps a body healthy. 😳

Overall, Gwendy‘s story for me was about creativity, construction vs. destruction, secrets, fate vs. free will, and man‘s efficacy in his own life and the world.

The Button Box was full of magic and wonder. The story should have been left here.

Magic Feather was written sans King and lacked any magic whatsoever. It was forgettable.

Final Task is dark and somber, highlighting the price paid for such a power as that contained within the box.

“[I feel like] I‘m losing my mind but in a slow, achingly beautiful sort of way.”

That quote sums up what it is like to read this book. The plot is ridiculous, the narrative frames are bonkers, the prose is beautiful, and the experience is wonderful - unless it isn‘t.

(More in comments 👇🏻)

LiterRohde Consequently, this is one of those books that you either love or you hate. This seems to be a theme with me. I gravitate to questions, movies, books, paintings that are not so straightforward. 2y
LiterRohde Sure, you can try to make sense of it, unpack the ideas, or figure out what is going on. And you might actually get somewhere. But I‘m not sure where you get will be satisfying. The fleeting impression of the ink in the fibers is much more satisfying than the concrete progression of the words on the page. 2y

LiterRohde @Nute Thanks! One of the first to welcome me when I joined. And one of the first to welcome me back. 🧡 I needed a short break at the time. For whatever reason Litsy was burning me out and I don‘t even remember why. It just wasn‘t fun anymore. And then that short break turned into a long one (A year or two? Yikes.). So. What did I miss? 🤣 2y

Bunny: A Novel | Mona Awad

This book is one of the most difficult books to explain, but also difficult to stop reading. I‘m still not sure what I just read. Was it comedy, horror, metafiction, satire? Yes. And because of that it is also it‘s own thing. I think. One sentence, I‘m like 😊👍 “OK this is good”. Next, I‘m like 😉 “Yup, I see what you did there”. A few sentences later, I‘m like 🤣. And then - 😳 or even 🤢. The book on the whole left me 🤯. 👇

📷: Libby

LiterRohde “We never joke about bunnies, Bunny.”

The main characters are quintessential Pinkberry, emoji-loving, Cinderella princess popular girls. They are at once hilarious, cringe inducing, and terrifying - especially when you get to their golem experiments. 👇
(edited) 4y
LiterRohde “The poets brace themselves for imminent, overeducated poverty.”

And then there is the whole critique on creative writing. While reading a book that is itself ‘creative‘ writing, we see the self-important discussions of writing as the main characters attend classes that seem more like clandestine secret society Skull and Bones meetings than college classes.👇
(edited) 4y
LiterRohde These two main tropes mix with myriad others and become framed by a horror narrative that you have to read to believe. Like I said, I still am not sure what I read.

Happy Easter?
4y
Ruthiella Loved this book too. Horror...sure. But you are right. It‘s so much more too. I really want to read Awad‘s first novel now. 🐰 4y

LiterRohde @TK-421 You are welcome. I have no history with reincarnation and I have a weird history with religion in general. But for me, this story and video highlight the similarities between religions and the commonalities of being human. I could just as easily fit this story into the narrative of the Judeo-Christian tradition I grew up in. I would just have to use the “correct” terminology. The quote I used sounds a lot like the Golden Rule. 4y

A mysterious sleepwalking sickness has hit the United States, starting with a young girl. And it seems to be spreading. What it is and how it spreads, no one knows. Terrorists? Disease? Apocalypse? 👇

LiterRohde The Sleepwalkers begin to travel with purpose, but no one knows where they are going. Family and friends follow after affected loved ones to protect and take care of them. And the nation watches with fear, wonder, and even hatred.

This is the crux of the book - how people deal with this growing crisis as it spreads across the United States. Will it be us against them, or will we be united to find a solution?

“Everyone‘s got their own ideas and they push them and say to hell with everyone else. That's the history of the human race. It got us on top, only now it‘s pushing us off. [P]eople will put up with any kind of discomfort as long as it‘s always been that way. Try to get them to change and they fight you, even while they‘re dying, saying it was good enough for grandpa so it's good enough for me.”

“Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity. The greatest problem with communication is we don‘t listen to understand. We listen to reply. When we listen with curiosity, we don‘t listen with the intent to reply. We listen for what‘s behind the words.”
