Stephen King at his best (The Denver Post)a terrifying, award-winning collection of stories from the outer limits of one of the greatest imaginations of our time. A supermarket becomes the place where humanity makes its last stand against destruction. A trip to the attic becomes a journey to hell. A woman driver finds a scary shortcut to paradise. An idyllic lake harbors a bottomless evil. And a desert island is the scene of the most terrifying struggle for survival ever waged. These wonderfully gruesome stories (The New York Times Book Review) include: The Mist; Here There Be Tygers; The Monkey; Cain Rose Up; Mrs. Todds Shortcut; The Jaunt; The Wedding Gig; Paranoid: A Chant; The Raft; Word Processor of the Gods; The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands; Beachworld; The Reapers Image; Nona; For Owen; Survivor Type; Uncle Ottos Truck; Morning Deliveries (Milkman No. 1); Big Wheels: a Tale of the Laundry Game (Milkman No. 2); Gramma; The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet; and The Reach. In this wildly imaginative, delightfully diabolical collectionKing once again proves to be the consummate storyteller (The Associated Press).

Pickpick

This collection is one I‘ve meandered thru for 5-6 months now for various reasons. There are strong short stories and novellas in here, of course, but overall I think this collection is not quite as strong as Night Shift, which just banged out winners over and over. My favorites from this one include The Raft, Survivor Type, The Mist, and Gramma, which I just don‘t hear talked about enough.

Next in my #readingStephenKing personal challenge: IT!!

I was reading this short story collection around 3-4 months ago and ended up putting it down with about one-third of the book to go. I can‘t remember why, exactly. But I picked it back up this morning, partly because I hate not finishing a book by the King, partly because IT is next on my list and I‘m excited to get started on it.

At any rate, this is my #currentlyreading #readingStephenKing

October 31 is not quite over yet in my time zone, but I'll be travelling tonight and tomorrow and not sure when I'll get a chance to post, so I thought I'd better do it now! I got 26899 in the second half of #scarathlon to make a grand total of 54402.

I loved being part of the #skeletoncrew team, so ably headed by @Emilymdxn! Thanks to all the event organizers. I had a blast!

Skeleton crew pals! Can you believe we‘re nearly halfway through #scarathlon??? It‘s almost time for our halfway points check in - you can tell me your point tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday morning, and it can be a post or a comment on here. Remember every single point helps!

#skeletoncrew

Bluebird 7879 points for the first 2 weeks. 🥺. 2nd half should be much better since I am in the middle of 5 audiobooks at the moment and am not counting any until they are done (i am not tracking my daily hours read since I know how many hours each book will be when done). 5mo
Emilymdxn @Bluebird thank you!! Sounds like a great plan - I do mine day by day but I think there‘s as many different systems as there are different scarathloners! 5mo

#scarathlon is here my darling #skeletoncrew members! And we have our first weekly game! This one runs until October 8 and it‘s a big points getter.

Name as many books as you can that have anything in common with our team buddy reads Horrorstor and Small Town Big Magic with its sequel Big Little Spells. You can make the list on your phone or a spreadsheet and see how many you get. Good luck!

Ahoy #skeletoncrew 🎃 #scarathlon 2023 is just three sleeps away and I‘m excited

The first readathon of the challenge is the #20in4 hosted by @Andrew65 starting tomorrow. Set whatever goals you like and start on your first spooky, scary or autumnal read

If you still have early bird points you haven‘t posted to get yet there‘s still time! Now is a great time to make those bucket lists, pick some bingo boards, buy in some snacks… I can‘t wait!

Andrew65 Great to be the launch evert! 😍 The more that join the merrier, whatever team they are in. 🥰 6mo

There are a lot of fun bingo boards and readathons to get on board with this month my #skeletoncrew compatriots! Here‘s a very cool looking bingo board from @Read4life which will work great for horror and non horror reads to suit everyone doing #scarathlon and get those stackable readathon points.

I‘m going to put a link in the comments to a google drive with a lot of other readathon stuff and bingo boards in it if anyone fancies some more!

Read4life Thank you for sharing! 6mo

Bluebird Thanks! I‘m getting a bit overwhelmed with all the options—however I don‘t want to miss anything 😂😂 6mo
Emilymdxn @Bluebird everything is 100% optional so don‘t feel the need to bite off more than you can chew 🥰my only goal is for the whole skeleton crew to have a fun scarathlon and if you wanna start a bunch of bingo boards and abandon them halfway through that is your right 🎃 6mo
Bluebird @Emilymdxn 😂😂 that sounds about right! This weekend I‘m gonna lay out all the options and decide what I‘ll pursue….and then hope I finish something! The fun is the journey and racking up some points! Bonus for anything I complete 😊 6mo

1. My perfect Halloween would include a cool evening, the scent of autumn leaves in the wind, handing out full size candy bars to the trick or treaters with the Hubs and dog, and then going inside to turn off the lights and watch something scary.
2. You're Next or Cabin in the Woods
3. Horror and thrillers!
4. Everything, but mostly I love looking at what everyone is reading and the sense of community the game brings.

Here‘s some quick #scarathlon tips and tricks for my #skeletoncrew pals from our wonderful hosts @Clwojick and @StayCurious 🎃

I‘ll be posting the spreadsheet tracker in the comments of this post on my lunch break today when I have a computer. Ask me any questions if there‘s anything here that‘s new to you. I‘m so excited to get started - scarathlon brings me so much joy every year and the games this year look REALLY fun 🧙

ShananigansReads Are we tagging the whole team in every post? I don‘t want to get annoying with my tags 😬 6mo
Emilymdxn @ShananigansReads you can go ahead and tag me in every post, I don‘t mind the spam at all it‘s what I‘m here for! Tagging the whole team is not needed for every post but you could if you‘re celebrating/sharing something fun for the whole skeleton crew 6mo

ShananigansReads @Emilymdxn Sounds good. Thank you. 6mo
ShananigansReads Also, I apologize to any #SkeletonCrew members I haven't been tagging. I just realized the website cuts off the comment. 😣 6mo
candc320 Hi! Just wanted to check on the spreadsheet…no worries if you haven‘t posted it yet or if I‘m missing it 🤪. I just know I‘m the worst at keeping track unless I have something to physically write points in. 6mo
Emilymdxn @ShananigansReads @IndoorDame @moll2 @candc320 @MidnightBookGirl @Pigpen_Reads @kwmg40 @Blerdgal_Fenix @Bluebird @Q84 @Eyelit hi everyone! Tagging you in this post again so you can see the tracker spreadsheet I posted above. I‘d recommend entering points that aren‘t for readathons (eg books finished, photo challenge) on here too and just leaving the readathon box blank 6mo
candc320 Thanks @Emilymdxn !! 6mo
Bluebird @Emilymdxn Couple questions: if I am doing 4 readathons, do I get 4 x the points for hours read? Or total 10 points per hour regardless of how many I do? For the word search points, is it only the exact word, or do plurals, etc count. Ghost/ghosts. Blood/bloody. I‘m doing catch up after a busy week and working on charting my points. 6mo
Emilymdxn @Bluebird its each readathon separately so 40 points for 4 readathons, and 50 points if you‘re doing 4 readathons and a space on a bingo board (cause that counts as a readathon too). For the word search words it‘s up for interpretation but I‘d say all forms of the word so ghost, ghosts, ghostly, ghost-like, ghosthunter 🎃 6mo
Bluebird Sweet! Thanks! 6mo

I may be the oddball of the group. I‘m a scaredy-cat and avoid horror/scary books as much as possible. I even had to fast forward through the Ready, Player, One movie when it got to the part about The Shining. Lol. However, I‘m a fan of The Walking Dead and read Chris Carter mysteries that are not for the faint of heart. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘ll be enjoying the lighter side of Halloween! #skeletoncrew see below for answers to the questions.

Bluebird Perfect Halloween would be a cool, breezy day (in Southern Ca, so it‘s a longshot), watching movies and sipping hot cocoa while answering the door to lots of trick or treaters. Favorite movie: Young Frankenstein. Favorite Genre: mystery. Looking forward to joining in the fun and maybe trying a few not so light scary books/movies….maybe! (edited) 6mo
Emilymdxn That sounds super fun as an ideal Halloween! I love a cosy mystery for Halloween, the fun light ones are always so fun to read particularly on audio 🎃🎃🎃 6mo
candc320 I love Young Frankenstein, and The Walking Dead (which is actually pretty scary, at least to me)! 6mo
Blerdgal_Fenix Ideal Halloween - no snow or rain. Weather in my area gets crazy, I just want it in the 60s, clear night. Genre: whodunnit spooky books. Favorite movie- Haunted Mansion (Eddie Murphy) & 13 Ghosts. Looking forward to some spooky fun with new people. 6mo

We‘ve got the photo challenge back this year in #scarathlon 🎃 i love looking out for things that make you feel autumnal, spooky, Halloweenie each day. I love looking for something that resonates with each word in my daily life - it‘s quite mindful and then I love capturing those memories! It doesn‘t have to be photos you take yourself that day, it could be a photo that resonated with you or something you saved from before

The word search is back this year for #scarathlon 🎃

Anytime you spot one of these words in any book you read, that‘s 10 points 🥰 I love this part of the challenge and am so keen it‘s back this year. It‘s so motivating to keep you reading one more chapter before bed, and it‘s a fun way to get points from books with nothing to do with Halloween if you want a break from being spooky.

3. Definitely horror - something to really get under my skin and scare me.

Hello to all my #skeletoncrew #scarathlon teammates! I thought it would be nice to get to know each other a little before embarking on our spooky and autumnal reading together so here‘s a little getting to know you post to share and discuss. There‘s no points up for grabs here but it‘d be awesome if you wanted to repost and tell us a bit about yourself!

Here‘s my answers here and in the comments:

1. My perfect Halloween would involve 👇

Emilymdxn a lot of horror movies, a long autumnal walk or easy hike, rich hot tomato soup and coffee, and reading in a little cafe. 2. My all time favourite film is Scream so anything in that franchise, and Practical Magic for my favourite witchy but not scary film. 3. I love everything autumnal really! Can be quiet slow literary fiction, out and out horror, cosy fantasy, romance, I‘m here for all of it. 4. I‘m looking forward to being a captain for the 👇 (edited) 6mo

Just one more info post for the #scarathlon #skeletoncrew 🍁 here‘s the points breakdown. I can also share a blank spreadsheet for tracking your points if anyone would find that helpful to have?

Remember readathons and bingo boards are your friends to get points! If you‘re reading a book to fill a bingo board you found anywhere on the internet that also counts as a readathon, so each hour read could count 5 times (50 points) if you want!

Emilymdxn I think some people might be having an issue with notifications not coming through unfortunately, so please do check my profile every couple days if you want to check you might have missed anything! 6mo
candc320 Thanks so much for all the information! I‘d love the spreadsheet info! 6mo

Bluebird Thanks for the information! Glad you sent it early…i misunderstood a few of the criteria. I get it now. Lol. Sad to know only our team buddy read counts for points—I had planned on a buddy read elsewhere. 🙄. I also thought the movie/tv didn‘t need to be scary ones. Ack, i don‘t do horror. I‘d also like the spreadsheet. (edited) 6mo
Emilymdxn @Bluebird for movies and tv, any kind of vaguely spooky/mystery/witchy thing will do - could be anything with witches, any kind of cosy murder mystery etc. I think quite a lot of the participants don‘t like horror at all! I‘ll get you the spreadsheet asap - might need to be Thursday as I‘m away and doing everything on my phone rn 6mo
Emilymdxn @candc320 I‘ll post a google doc link asap! I‘m away with just my phone at the moment so it might need to be Thursday when I get home 6mo
Bluebird @Emilymdxn good to know! Thx. I didn‘t join last year because I thought it was mostly scary reads/movies, but then saw lots of mysteries counted. Is it the same for the books? Or just spooky or autumn theme? No rush on the spreadsheet, anytime before the 1st is fine. 6mo
Emilymdxn @Bluebird yes, anything mystery would count, or anything with witches/vampires/the like. You can also read books totally unrelated to Halloween and get points for those - all books count for readathon hours and bingo boards and word search words. I count all my grad school readings! 6mo
Pigpen_Reads I'm looking forward to this! 6mo
Emilymdxn @Pigpen_Reads excited to have you with us! Let me know if you have any questions or I can help with anything 🎃 6mo
kwmg40 @Emilymdxn I'm a bit confused about bingo boards. You said that they count as readathons, so if I read a book for #BookSpinBingo, I get the readathon points for that, right? But if I read a book for a readathon like #LittenListen that has an optional bingo board, do I count the points only once for the readathon or also for the bingo board if I manage to fill a square? I don't want to double dip if it's not legit! 😅 6mo
Emilymdxn @kwmg40 you‘re right it‘s a little confusing! If a readathon like litten listen also has a bingo board, just count a book once. So a book read for the board counts once and a book for the readathon that doesn‘t fit the board is also once. So if you read a book that counts for litten listen, book spin bingo and rushathon, that‘s 3 times. I hope that helps 🎃🎃🎃 6mo
kwmg40 @Emilymdxn That makes sense. Thanks for clarifying! 6mo
Eyelit How do short stories count? If I‘m reading a book of horror stories am I counting 25 points for the whole book or do I count points for each story read (if the latter how many points per story)? 6mo
Emilymdxn @Eyelit each story counts as a totally separate book, so a 20 page horror short story is the same number of points as a 500 page novel 🥰 6mo
Eyelit Thanks for the quick response and clarification! 6mo
Emilymdxn @Eyelit no worries! It‘s what I‘m here for (time zones allowing) 🎃🎃🎃 6mo

A pretty uneven collection of short stories from King. If this collection did not contain some of his best short-form work, I'd be rating this as a whole much lower. Standouts include The Mist, The Monkey, Mrs. Todd's Shortcut, The Jaunt, The Raft, Word Processor of the Gods, The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands, The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet, and The Reach. Low points include just about everything else. 3/5

The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet - This story is, for me, one of King's best. He seems to always be at his best when he's writing about writing, and this tale of an editor and writer's twin descents into madness is elegantly told. 5/5

quote
Pikathulhu
Skeleton Crew | Stephen King
post image

The Raft - This might be my favorite King short of all time. Character issues aside, this is the work that has, without equivocation, scared me so badly I never wanted to swim again. Anytime I visit a lake and, in general, most other bodies of water, I think of this story - and keep one eye open for a floating patch of black amidst the waves. 5/5

quote
Pikathulhu
Skeleton Crew | Stephen King
post image

The Jaunt - I loved this one. A delightful blend of sci-fi and horror. The story of the invention of The Jaunt that intercuts the ongoing narrative is delightful, and the grim conclusion ties it all together with a neat bow. This entry reminded me very much of some of the best of Bradbury or Dick. 5/5

Pikathulhu

Mrs. Todd's Shortcut - This was an amazing story. An incredible, intriguing concept with an engaging storyteller, this is a story that held me spellbound from start to finish. Like any good short story, this is one that left me longing for more. 5/5

quote
Pikathulhu
Skeleton Crew | Stephen King
post image

The Monkey - King takes an already terrifying child's toy, and finds a way to make it significantly more terrifying. When this creepy little simian jangs its cymbals together, people have a funny tendency to die. I absolutely loved this story, and have a feeling that it - much like its titular furry music maker - will be making unanticipated returns for a long time to come. 5/5

quote
Pikathulhu
Skeleton Crew | Stephen King
post image

The Mist - This is probably one of King's best-known short stories, and for good reason. It distills the essence of our fear of the unknown, and manages to personify that fear without engaging in that classic blunder of the horror genre - showing us its face. Though we see glimpses of the unspeakable terrors that lurk in the titular mist, we're ultimately left to the devices of our own imaginations. Truly terrifying. 5/5

Thanks to my amazing coworker I have a new addition to my Stephen King shelf. I was having so much fun placing the hands at various places until I found one I liked.

I think this is my favorite short story collection from King. I still remember the thrills, shudders, and delight I got from reading some of these stories for the first time in high school. “The Mist, “The Jaunt,” “The Raft,” “The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet,” “Survivor Type,” - these are stories I wish I could again for the first time. #scarathlondailyprompts #skeleton #teamslaughter

#OminousOctober #Day12 #Skeleton This is actually on my #Scarathlon TBR! It has a few of my favourite King short stories including The Raft, which scared me out of going night swimming for years & The Mist which is a classic horror story. #TeamSlaughter 6pts

fredamans It's a good read. One I also chose. 1y

Pikathulhu I still think about The Raft whenever I visit a lake. Got to keep your head on a constant swivel to spot any incoming “oil slicks“... 1y
Lizpixie @Pikathulhu it‘s a pretty horrifying image isn‘t it. The one that story puts in your head!💀😱 1y

Happy Halloween Season, Team Monster Mash! I've got my TBR and TBW above. I forgot to add my Army of Darkness comics to my TBR, but those will most certainly be read as well! Have a Spooky #Scarathlon, everyone!! #TeamMonsterMash #StayCurious #EarlyBirdPoints
