Princess in Theory: Reluctant Royals
Princess in Theory: Reluctant Royals | Alyssa Cole
133 posts | 115 read | 2 reading | 58 to read
From acclaimed author Alyssa Cole comes the tale of a city Cinderella and her Prince Charming in disguise . . .Between grad school and multiple jobs, Naledi Smith doesn't have time for fairy tales...or patience for the constant e-mails claiming she's betrothed to an African prince. Sure. Right. Delete! As a former foster kid, she's learned that the only things she can depend on are herself and the scientific method, and a silly e-mail won't convince her otherwise.Prince Thabiso is the sole heir to the throne of Thesolo, shouldering the hopes of his parents and his people. At the top of their list? His marriage. Ever dutiful, he tracks down his missing betrothed. When Naledi mistakes the prince for a pauper, Thabiso can't resist the chance to experience life--and love--without the burden of his crown. The chemistry between them is instant and irresistible, and flirty friendship quickly evolves into passionate nights. But when the truth is revealed, can a princess in theory become a princess ever after?

I know, I know, I'm late to the Alyssa Cole train. But after reading Royal Holiday and having this one on my three for so long, I decided to finally give it a listen. And boy am I happy I did! Such a cute story-- exactly the kind of royal romance I was hoping for after Royal Holiday, and the audiobook was great. I stayed up way too late several nights in a row listening to it while I crocheted.

4 enthusiastic stars / ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Scochrane26 I don‘t read a lot of romance but have gotten into Cole‘s books. I also like Sherry Thomas (lady Sherlock, she wrote romance before that series). 3w
rachelsbrittain @Scochrane26 same! I don't read widely in romance but I have some definite favorites-- and Cole is now up there! And I'll have to check out Sherry Thomas's books too 3w

Frustrating & disappointing and I don‘t even know why I bother with this genre any more. Naledi is cool and I‘d read more about her, but I don‘t like this book. Jamal/Thabiso is a selfish liar and never changes, but since he‘s supposedly been dreaming about her forever, it‘s all romantic and cool *eye roll.* To read Naledi even try to take partial blame for his weak attempts at explaining, I cannot.

Full disclosure: I don't read Romance novels.

Then why'd I read A Princess in Theory? One, I'd seen readers rave about Cole's works, so I've had her on my to-read list for a couple years now. And two, this book in particular fit a challenge I'm doing on GR: A retelling of a certain tale type you would NOT normally read... I selected Cinderella.

Thankfully, Ledi is easy to like, respect & root for. And the pop culture references are fun to spot.

bookandcat I so enjoyed this one! 6mo

YES!!!! This book reminded me of that Julia Stiles movie "The Prince and Me" but, like, if the prince were from Wakanda and the backstory is infinitely more swoonworthy. It's really fantastic! ? #romance #romantsy

JamieArc Yes! That‘s exactly what I was thinking (I think I even put it in my GR review) - a mix between The Prince and Me and Wakanda with a bit more steam 😁 9mo

Confession- I took the long way in all my driving today in order to finish this book. Alyssa Cole is a lot of fun, and the narrator of the audiobook was great. Fake African nation and a silly "mystery," but what I love about this book is how much time she spends developing her characters so that you root for their happily ever after too. I also liked the background of foster care for one main character. #hoopla #romantsy

I don‘t typically read romance, but I am SO GLAD I picked up this book. It covers so many social issues - being an independent woman, gaslighting, being forced to make ends meet - with a sweet, utterly considerate romance that feels honest and true. This book wasn‘t an escape, it was a modern fantasy that fit right in with my own political and moral opinions and left me swooning. INCREDIBLE.

Aside from my current reread, I'm trying to focus on books by African American authors since it's Black History month. I also thought it'd be fun to read some romance to get in the mood for Valentine's day so I started with Alyssa Cole. I loved the premise of this book - the heroine is receiving what she thinks are spam emails from an African prince claiming she is his betrothed. This was a fun, fluffy read but it did end up dragging for me a bit.

HOTPock3tt I liked the second book in the series better. A duke by default 11mo
WhatWouldJaneDo @HOTPock3tt thanks! It sounded like Portia would be a fun character to follow, maybe a little less serious than Ledi. The novella about Likotsi also caught my eye. 11mo
HOTPock3tt @WhatWouldJaneDo yeah ledi was almost an unrealistic character to me. A little TOO perfect. Portia was more real.. someone who‘s made plenty of very human mistakes. And she was ALOT of fun too! ♥️I also really liked the novella about likotsi ☺️ 11mo

What if those emails from that "Nigerian prince" weren't spam at all and you were actually the long-lost princess betrothed to the ruler of an African nation? That's the case for Naledi Smith whose life turns upside down when Thabiso enters it. Cole's writing is smart, fun, and deeply engaging. Coming to America meets The Princess Diaries. LOVED this book!!

I deeply resent the sticker placement on this library book, but I loved the book itself. This is my THIRD Alyssa Cole book this year, so it think it‘s safe to say I do in fact like romance 💕 Thabiso is bae and Naledi is such an adorable nerd. This was a cute, modern fairy tale with a brilliant, independent heroine. I liked the whole ‘email scam‘ premise. I also agree with @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian This book very accurately portrayed the microaggressions dealt with by black women on a regular basis. But it didn‘t become too heavy. The story remained lighthearted and fun. The only downside= it mirrored the movie “Coming to America” way too closely. Overall it was enjoyable. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5

Here's the thing: when you break this book down into its component parts, I loved it. Ledi's great, with her work ethic and her love of science. Thabiso's great, with his commitment to consent and willingness to stretch himself. Pretty well everyone in the supporting cast feels like they could carry their own novella, if not a full novel. And Thesolo sounds WONDERFUL.

Put it all together, though, and it just didn't spark for me. Sadness.
