Skeleton Crew (Library)
Skeleton Crew (Library) | Stephen King
The #1 "New York Times" bestseller and winner of the 1986 Locus Award for Best Collection, "Skeleton Crew" is Stephen King at his best ("The Denver Post") a terrifying, mesmerizing collection of stories from the outer limits of one of the greatest imaginations of our time. Wildly imaginative, delightfully diabolical King once again proves to be the consummate storyteller (The Associated Press). A supermarket becomes the place where humanity makes its last stand against destruction. A trip to the attic becomes a journey to hell. A woman driving a Jaguar finds a scary shortcut to paradise. An idyllic lake harbors a bottomless evil. And a desert island is the scene of the most terrifying struggle for survival ever waged. This wonderfully gruesome collection ("The New York Times Book Review") includes: The Mist; Here There Be Tygers; The Monkey; Cain Rose Up; Mrs. Todd s Shortcut; The Jaunt; The Wedding Gig; Paranoid: A Chant; The Raft; Word Processor of the Gods; The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands; Beachworld; The Reaper s Image; Nona; For Owen; Survivor Type; Uncle Otto s Truck; Morning Deliveries (Milkman No. 1); Big Wheels: a Tale of the Laundry Game (Milkman No. 2); Gramma; The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet; and The Reach. King is best known for his iconic, immersive long novels, but he is also a master of the short story, and this is a magnificent collection."

BookwormAHN I'm still reading it. I loved The Mist. 4d
DGRachel @BookwormAHN I didn‘t attempt this one, but I‘m glad you‘re enjoying it! Anything in particular stand out about The Mist? 3d
BookwormAHN @DGRachel For one thing the book ending is a lot less bleak than the movie one. Also the story really sucks you in until a mist filled with giant monsters seems completely plausible. And you really feel for the main character David, he has a very everyman feel to him. 3d
DGRachel @BookwormAHN Sounds really good. I may have to add it to my TBR for next October! 3d
Karkar The Mist was one of the two stories I liked in this collection. I was disappointed in this one. 😬 3d
JulAnna The Mist is definitely my favorite in this collection, but I also liked The Jaunt, Word Processor of the Gods, and The Raft. I liked more of the stories in Night Shift than in Skeleton Crew, but there are few authors who can deliver a short story as well as Stephen King. He can write a strong character in a few words, imho. 3d

I'm not a huge fan of short stories, but I like Stephen King, so I thought I'd read this collection. Some of the stories were really great, some of them were pretty good, and some of them just weren't. The Mist was absolutely my favorite of all the stories! #ReadingThroughTheYears192021 #1985

I've been in a mood for short stories lately, seems like the perfect time to finally read #Skeleton Crew. Seems like opinion is pretty evenly divided as to which is a better collection, Night Shift or Skeleton Crew. I'll have to decide for myself.

W is for Word Processor of the Gods; a short story written by King, collected in Skeleton Crew and made into an episode of that awesome 80‘s series; Tales From The Darkside. It tells the story of a disenchanted writer whose nephew dies, leaving him a birthday gift of a homemade word processor that has the ability to affect reality when used. It‘s one of those “three wishes” type stories that has a happier turnout than The Monkey‘s Paw.

C.Perone I loved this story when I first read it back in the 80s and “word processors” were just staring to become a thing 😊 2y
GarthRanzz @C.Perone Same here! I remember when I got my first “intelligent” electric typewriter with a built in dictionary. I thought it was science fiction! 2y
Bklover I loved this story!!! 2y

Reggie Have you seen the Twilight Zone episode with the same story? Where the guy who plays the Penguin in the old Batman ran the printing press machine and whatever he wrote would happen. It was pretty good. 2y
GarthRanzz @Reggie Yes! With Burgess Meredith! Printer‘s Devil I think was the episode. The only better one was Time Enough At Last. 😊 2y
GarthRanzz @Bklover I‘m going to hunt down Tales From The Darkside so I can watch it after a re-read. 😊 2y
dariazeoli I loved this story and was about to choose it for today‘s prompt. High five! 2y
C.Perone The built-in correctotype was a god-send for me!! 😄 2y
GarthRanzz @dariazeoli 🙌 I think we may have a few duplicates over these last few letters. 😊 2y

M is for The Mist, one of King‘s top ten best pieces of writing.
I first came across this novella in Skeleton Crew. I waited almost 20 years for an ending to the story, & finally got one from Frank Darabont‘s film.
What‘s so amazing about this story is its timelessness. It‘s set after the Vietnam War, but when Darabont places it 30 years later, none of the themes or devices fail - they all still work, because the ideas are eternal.👇🏻

Sweettartlaura PS - after the horror of Darabont‘s ending, I think I prefer King‘s Birds-like open-ending - his is actually more hopeful 😮 2y
GarthRanzz The Mist is my choice for M too (when I get around to posting in a bit). Both the movie and story are amongst his best but I love the 3D audio of it that I had. 2y
kgriffith Fun fact: I moved from Puerto Rico to Maine in December of 1990, after my parents split. I moved to Bridgton, which is the town where The Mist is set. I know the grocery store where he set this one. 2y
See All 9 Comments
Sweettartlaura Never listened to it on audio, @GarthRanzz - and what is 3D audio??? 2y
Sweettartlaura @kgriffith That‘s awesome - it seems that everyone I know/meet from Maine has a Stephen King connection sooner or later - very cool. Owen & his wife Kelly now live & work near my hometown. I keep hoping to make my own King connection when I‘m there 😉 2y
GarthRanzz It was called binaural. This company produced audio “plays” of books in the 80‘s using it. I ruined my cassettes listening to it on road trips. 2y
kgriffith @Sweettartlaura it‘s true! I‘m taking a film class this term and we just watched The Shawshank Redemption, but King has come up several times already, esp wrt The Shining. Another fun tidbit: I was seated beside him at JavaNet, the Internet Cafe on exchange St in the 90s, but couldn‘t have told him from the barista if I‘d been offered a million dollars. 2y
Sweettartlaura @kgriffith Thea‘s what I hear🤣. My Boston friends see him in line for food at Fenway, & are amazed at how down to earth he is. Just a regular baseball fan, getting a hot dog 🌭 2y
kgriffith @Sweettartlaura Yep, exactly! And while we recognize him as “just one of us” in a lot of ways, he and his wife have done so much philanthropic work here and elsewhere. We‘re proud to call that twisted mind part of our community and culture. 🙃 2y

#BackToReading #day15 #ShortOnTimeShortStories I'm not a reader of short stories. I'm more of a #ILikeBigBooksAndICannotLie kinda gal. I prefer to get sucked in by a long, complex story than have a short, sharp smack upside the head. I think the only short stories I've read beside this book, have been ghost Story compilations when I was younger. This book though, does have some great stories in it, especially The Mist & The Raft. Both disturbing!

monkeygirlsmama I'm not a big short story fan either, but if done right I can enjoy them on occasion. 2y

KCorter I use short story collections as pallette cleansers as well. You're right about not requiring as much commitment as a novel, but at least you keep the momentum of moving on to the next book.
