For years (read: my entire life) I‘ve avoided romances. This year, I‘ve read three. One Day in December is a New Adult book but was heartbreakingly sweet. The launch into career and unrequited love was real. I remember those days of my life so vividly and would never want to relive them. It‘s not exactly a Christmas book, but would make a wonderful beach read. Give it a go. It‘s a fun read.

KT1432 Omg I have been eyeing this one, debating whether or not to add it to my BOTM box. Romance is NOT my favorite genre by any means but this one seems interesting. I think you've convinced me! 5y

After losing her memory from a plane crash, Clementine runs away from the hospital and her former life to find herself. This book was very well written for the bit of brain candy that it was.

I spend 4 hours in the car driving to and from work each day and listen to audio books. When I‘m out of audible credits I listen to podcasts. What are your favorites?

Beatlefan129 Overdue! It‘s one of my favorites 6y
ReadingSusan I assume you mean podcasts not audiobooks? Settle in 🤣 Planet Money, 99% Invisible, Modern Love, Lovett or Leave It, Serial, In the Dark, Dirty John, Alone: A Love Story, Breakdown, Buried Truths, By the Book, Code Switch, Criminal, Up First, Deadly Manners, Death, Sex and Money, Ear Hustle, Homecoming, How Did This Get Made, Levar Burton Reads Launch, Keep It, love & Radio, Radio Diaries, Memory Palace, Reply All and Reveal. 6y
Joy0201 I love Lore, but podcasts in general overwhelm me. There are just too many. 6y
See All 12 Comments
Amie I second the recommendation for Overdue! Also: Stuff You Missed in History Class, Dressed, Reading Envy, The Reading Women, and You Must Remember This 6y
BookishBeth @ReadingSusan I just started In the Dark today. I‘m hooked. I listened to Dirty John. Have you listened to Dr Death? It‘s produced by the same people as DJ. So good! Thanks for the others! 6y
BookishBeth @Beatlefan129 and @amie I will check out Overdue! You Must Remember This sounds interesting. 6y
BookNAround Sawbones, A Way with Words, BBC4 Books and Authors, The Readers, Spilled Milk, Every Little Thing, No Such Thing As a Fish, Part Time Genius, Radiolab, Sidedoor, Very Bad Words, Your Last Meal, and many more including some listed about. 6y
jmofo I love 99% Invisible, Welcome to Night Vale, Memory Palace, Radiolab, Stuff You Missed in History Class, Suicide Buddies, The Reading Women, Writing Excuses, Moviesign with the Mads. There are a handful of others I like but don‘t listen to very frequently. I‘ve been looking to start listening to Lore. 6y
ReadingSusan @BookishBeth yes I am listening now. Fascinating! 6y
Smrloomis I really like The Librarian is In and Annotated. 6y
CSeydel I enjoyed “In the Dark” as well. If you like true crime I recommend “Accused: the unsolved murder of Elizabeth Andes”. Highly recommend “S-Town”, amazing story. 5y
SheReadsAndWrites Mike Rowe's podcast is my favorite. 😊 5y

I read this book years ago and am now listening to it. I never realized how beautifully and grotesquely written this is. Poetically horrific.

BethM That is not at all the book description I was expecting! Sounds intense. 6y
BookishBeth @BethM the book is kind of twisted in a train wreck-can‘t-look-away but the word choices are quite wonderful. 6y

I‘ve read both Simon and Upside and fell a little in love with the characters. Leah didn‘t give me that relatable feeling. She was too moody and confused and shy for my reading likability. Or, maybe she reminded me too much of my own high school self.

YA is my total guilty pleasure and this book did not disappoint. Simon is immediately lovable so I was drawn in from the start. I needed to know who Blue was just as bad as Simon did. Simon was so much more cool and courageous in his situation than I ever could have been at his age. This book was both fun and relevant almost as much as The Hate U Give is. I loved this book. At first I saw Eleanor as a female version of Sheldon, but soon saw she was more than that. More damaged and grappling for love and acceptance. She's a great female heroine. She's strong. She's funny. She's resourceful. This book was wonderfully written and packed an emotional wallop to boot.

BookishBeth @sprainedbrain You might be the first other person to not cringe at that movie. I find it artful. The book, however, was a toughie due to the slang. 7y

BookishBeth @Julsmarshall I recommend The Language of Flowers to everyone!! 7y
sprainedbrain @BookishBeth I've never read it, but the movie is brilliant. I've watched it too many times to count, and it started my adoration for Ewan McGregor. 7y
BookishBeth @sprainedbrain me too! He might also be one of the draws to the film! 🤓 7y
sprainedbrain @BookishBeth nothing wrong with that! 🤤 7y
IndigoReader @BookishBeth oh dear. I'm from Louisiana living in Georgia. 7y
elawsan Great movie! I loved the book too. I'm kinda proud I was able to get through it. Both Trainspotting and A Clockwork Orange. 7y
BookishBeth @indigoreader come back! We'll do a book club! 😉 @elawsan A Clockwork Orange is something I've yet to conquer but plan to! 🙂 7y
elawsan @BookishBeth the slang is tough, but it's pretty comparable to Trainspotting. I think you'll dig it. 7y

Nineteen Minutes | Jodi Picoult

Pickpick

I typically thoroughly enjoy Jodi Picoult's books and this one did not disappoint. I tend to eat and breathe the words she writes. Motherhood is such a strong theme in her books, which is something I've missed blindly for years. Today the theme is so much more poignant and bittersweet. This being the day of my troubled step son's high school graduation (long, tough road finally conquered) and my daughter is moving out at the end of the month.

Smrloomis Congratulations! 🎉🎉🎉 7y
BookishBeth @Smrloomis thank you!! 🤗it was down to the wire for this graduation. If it were a book, it would be an edge-of-your-seat thriller. (edited) 7y
Reggie This book was rough. 7y
Smrloomis @BookishBeth maybe he'll write about it someday 😂 either way, it's a major milestone! 7y

Has anyone read this? I haven't started yet but I'm making this my summer reading goal. Any words of encouragement before I take the plunge?

Suzze The only Tolstoy I haven't read. 😀 7y
tournevis Only excerpts 7y
StephanieMarie I've read it! I found it easier to read as an ebook because I find that breaks it down into shorter pages for me. It was okay, I enjoyed the society parts but found the battle parts dry. I liked Anna Karenina better. My advice is to set yourself small manageable goals every day (even if it's 5 pages) 7y

DGRachel I haven't read this one, but I think @StephanieMarie 's advice is good for any of the Russian tomes. Tackle it in small chunks. 7y
DarcysMom I have an audio version, but it has been awfully daunting and I haven't started it yet. 7y
OrangeMooseReads I have the ebook of it, but have not tackled it yet. 7y
LauraBrook I've tried three times and haven't had any luck so far. 7y
BookishBeth @StephanieMarie I've tried this as an ebook but felt like I needed to flip to the family tree so I ordered the physical book. I've read Anna Karenina and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Everyone else, let's do this together! A War and Peace support group!! 7y
lildeb_8 I have the book as well. If we're starting a support group this summer, I'm in! 7y
BookishBeth @lildeb_8 Yes!! Should be start June 1? 7y
KaatjeH One of my favourite books!💗 It takes some patience to get used to the writing, but it's worth it. 7y
Astroneman I have this book in my book readers.... This summer I will read it! 7y
lildeb_8 June 1st sounds like a plan! 7y
StephanieMarie @BookishBeth oooh yes having the family tree is a great idea, russian novels are so confusing with everyone having 4 different names! 7y
MatchlessMarie Maybe watch the Peanuts movie for some motivation 😁 7y
Smrloomis I read it years ago and agree with @StephanieMarie. The society parts were good and a tree of characters and families is helpful. I assume you've already decided that reading it in Serial isn't what you want? 7y
BookishBeth @Smrloomis I ordered the hardback version so I could flip around with the footnotes and family tree and such. I'm bound and determined to get through this. 🤓 7y
dragondrool I'm one-third of the way. I found the names daunting until I watched the mini-series. Now I have people to picture with the names. That helps. I keep wanting to pick it up again, but life is busy right now so I crave lighter fare at the end of the day. I'm thinking of trying re-watching the show one episode at at time and alternating with the book. 7y
Smrloomis @BookishBeth 👍🏽 sounds good! Maybe @dragondrool 's idea would help too - watching a miniseries to help with names. For me, the tree in the front was essential! 7y
Heidi2 Have it sitting on my book shelf like forever. Since I became addicted to aufiobooks I've thought about listening but haven't decided yet. Support group sounds like a plan. 7y

The simple, yet elegant, language throughout this book helps to bring out the strength of the message and beauty of the friendship between two very different boys. Aristotle is seemingly calloused at a young age as he tries to figure out who he is and what his place is in the world when he meets Dante, a softer more artistic soul, at the public pool. The two boys form an unlikely friendship that is rich and complex beyond their years. Great read!

nelehelen This one is next on my list!! 7y
BookishBeth @nelehelen Clear your schedule. This book reads like a conversation with a friend. I didn't want to stop reading it. 7y

As a lover of both technology and dystopian novels, I thought this book would be a wonderful read. The Circle, a Google-esque company, tries to incorporate themselves into every aspect of everyday life. Where bringing convenience to the masses also brings social destruction. While it was engaging and entertaining throughout, I felt some of the characters fell flat and the ending was rushed. I would still recommend.

Purrfectpages I loved this book! I need to find more like it! 7y
BookishBeth @Purrfectpages this was one book that could have gone on and on for me. I'd watch Mae's live feed! 👀 7y
Purrfectpages I hear you! The ending actually surprised me. Wonder how the movie would compare, too. 7y
BookishBeth @Purrfectpages maybe I'll treat myself to the movie this week! I haven't gone to the movies by myself in a very long time. 7y
Purrfectpages Sounds like a plan! Let me know how it is if you do! 7y

My book is calling to me but my work project is getting in the way of some highly desired reading!

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Work projects are annoying that way 😕 7y
BookishBeth @thegirlwiththelibrarybag yes! I have have to remind myself, "This is how I afford all the books!" 7y
lildeb_8 I just started this myself! 7y
BookishBeth @lildeb_8 Are you enjoying it? I am! 🤓 7y
lildeb_8 It's a little so but I love the idea of the book. I've always been a little weary of too much technology so I plan to keep reading. I'm about 50 pages into the book. 7y

Though Beans the cat thinks this book makes a decent bed, Petroleum Refining in Non Technical Language is a great resource for someone who has never set foot inside a refinery. Granted, I read this for work but this text really is able to communicate some highly technical ideas in a very understandable way.

Where I found Eat, Pray, Love to be a self-indulgent piece of work for the author, Big Magic really spoke to me. I've been looking for a way out of the mundane into something about more spectacular. Big Magic discusses getting over your fear, getting out of your rut and living the creative life you were meant to have. I found to book filled with charming wisdom. Big Magic will stick with my soul as I find my own Magic.

This is one of the most powerful and relevant books I have ever read. It gives an intimate look into the lives of those affected by police brutality and not what is fed to us by either side of the media. If any book in the world should be required reading, it is this one.

Bookish_B This is our next book club pick. Based on the reviews I've been seeing I am super excited to read it and discuss! 7y

Wow. Just wow. This was a fast-paced thriller that kept you reading for more. Jason, the original, is kidnapped by a mysterious, yet familiar, stranger and transported to a place where everyone knows him but yet nothing is familiar. All he wants is to go home.

Reggie I was surprised at the bit of romance there was. It kinda gutted me when the wife died in the otherverses. 7y
BookishBeth I thought the bits of romance kind played an important part since that's how she was able to find the real husband. It wasn't too mushy either which I appreciated. 7y

Though I read this book years ago I thought it would be a relevant read for this day and age. I downloaded the audiobook read by Claire Danes. The book, always good, had added benefits with hearing a familiar voice.
