Home Fire: A Novel | Kamila Shamsie
From an internationally acclaimed novelist, the suspenseful and heartbreaking story of a family ripped apart by secrets and driven to pit love against loyalty, with devastating consequences. Isma is free. After years of watching out for her younger siblings in the wake of their mother’s death, she’s accepted an invitation from a mentor in America that allows her to resume a dream long deferred. But she can’t stop worrying about Aneeka, her beautiful, headstrong sister back in London, or their brother, Parvaiz, who’s disappeared in pursuit of his own dream, to prove himself to the dark legacy of the jihadist father he never knew. When he resurfaces half a globe away, Isma’s worst fears are confirmed. Then Eamonn enters the sisters’ lives. Son of a powerful political figure, he has his own birthright to live up to—or defy. Is he to be a chance at love? The means of Parvaiz’s salvation? Suddenly, two families’ fates are inextricably, devastatingly entwined, in this searing novel that asks: What sacrifices will we make in the name of love?

Trying to write down my #BFC stats. My poor cat did not get enough attention today. (she slept on my chest last night)

Goals reached:

50k+ Steps (can post the total tomorrow)
2litres of water every day
70+ floors (yes, I ran down to the basement and up to the attic three times this evening, just to then realise I still have to take the garbage out)
6 times exercise

Books finished in total 13.

Points this week 5 - in total 65 (I think)

While I often enjoy multi-POV books, I think this would have worked better as either a single (Isma) or dual (Isma & Aneeka) POV. I wasn‘t drawn in by the men‘s sections, they didn‘t feel as well crafted as the women. The story is powerful, esp. the parts about grief, about what it means to be family and to love or lose each other in such devastating ways. But it was uneven and lost me a bit with the dudes. Still def a worthy read, tho. 3/5 ⭐️

This was right up my alley. A family drama that managed to be engaging and thought provoking despite it being fairly short.

Day three feeling hung over, exhausted, taxed,.... It's strange. It might just be my MS trying to tell me something, like we're having a relapse anniversary. It might be the start of another flare up. Might be hay-fever. Whatever it is, it's annoying. It interferes with the #BFC.
I also need to get some books finished, but it's hard to keep my eyes on the pages.

My best novel of the year, wow. A contemporary reimagining of Sophocles's ANTIGONE set in contemporary Britain w/its anti-Muslim bigotry. If you know ANTIGONE, you know the basic plot, you know how everything is going to end (badly, for everyone), you just don't know how Shamsie is going to get her characters there. She's written a modern tragedy full of flawed yet sympathetic characters on all sides. The final 3 pages left me shocked and sobbing.

akckitty Unfortunately this has been on my tbr for too long. I have to make it a priority! 2mo

Had to read this passage several times, for real.

The book that's mentioned here is the one I revised the German translation of 14 years ago. Wow! I can't believe it made its way into a popular work of fiction. Not that it doesn't deserve mentioning, it just feels odd seeing it in a novel. So far I've only found it mentioned in non-fiction.

Wow...just wow. This is such an important book. I'll admit, I didn't like most of the characters, but that's not really the point anyway. Shamsie does an incredible job of placing the ancient myth of Antigone in our time. Because I was familiar with the myth, I realised it was going to be a tragic story, but the modern setting really brought it home. Simultaneously a beautiful, horrific and tragic story. Absolute MUST READ!

This is a tale following the ups and down of friendship, relationships, and most centrally, family. It is about religion and prejudice, justice and discrimination. And let me tell you, that was a simultaneously stunning and horrifying ending.

This was given to me by a teacher due to similar themes with A Very Large Expanse of Sea, which I read a while ago.

I did not find the first half engaging but the second half and ending compensated!

7/10

Guys, I just started reading this which is a big deal because it's one of the first books I stacked here on Litsy. With that being said, what the heck do y'all have me reading?! I'm so confused by the storytelling. First, she's been interrogated at the airport, then she's at work avoiding Skype calls, then she's walking through the woods. How much time has passed? Why do we need to know this stuff. Please tell me it gets better!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Oh no!!!! 😱😱 4mo
eraderneely This book really changes and grows as you get new perspectives in each section. The first section is definitely the slowest, but I really loved some of the language she used to describe living abroad. 4mo

This. Book. The writing is gorgeous and powerful. A modern retelling of Antigone set in present day London. Siblings must cope with cultural stereotypes, assimilation, extremism and what it means to be both British and Muslim. They face their own family history in vastly disparate ways. I basically didn‘t put this book down once I started and immediately checked Antigone out from the library. Can‘t wait for book club. Will stay with me.

😮 Did not see that coming! I loved the fact extremism isn‘t depicted in this novel as a simple, black & white issue involving flat actors on either side. The characters were real and people I wanted to know about. Who are you? Such an important question for one of the principals in the end. Loved it!
