Dark Matter
Dark Matter | Blake Crouch
Are you happy with your life? Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious. Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. Before a man Jasons never met smiles down at him and says, Welcome back, my friend. In this world hes woken up to, Jasons life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible. Is it this world or the other thats the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he couldve imaginedone that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe. Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly humana relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far well go to claim the lives we dream of.

I made a huge dent in the cleaning while my little guy was napping! Now I'm sitting down with some lunch and rewarding myself with a chapter or two. I'm really enjoying this one so far (about 100 pages in), though I already have my suspicions about what is happening. #LunchTimeReading

Blake Crouch Kind-of-Trippy
Science Fiction
Mind-Fucking/Defining

Blake Crouch has a way of taking you for a ride...a wild and crazy ride with thought-provoking situations and dilemma's that leave you contemplating the meaning of life and love and such. He also does science fiction in a way that is easily digestible.

"And maybe I can let go of the sting and resentment of the path not taken, because the path not taken isn't just the inverse of who I am. It's an infinitely branching system that represents all the permutations of my life between the extremes of me and Jason 2."
Another great selection from Crouch that explores the idea of a multiverse, infinite versions of ourselves and our lives, and reads much like watching a big budget thriller.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⬇#quotes

Chab256 "I've seen so many versions of you. With me. Without me. Artist. Teacher. Graphic Designer. But it's all, in the end, just life. We see it macro, like one big story, but when you're in it, it's all just day to day, right? And isn't that what you have to make peace with?"

Great premise: who hasn't wondered at some point "What if I'd done X instead of Y?" and I like to think about parallel worlds now and then. Also there's the hugely important message about appreciation. But then halfway through it got all Jason-Bourne-meets-Enid-Blyton's-Magic-Faraway-Tree and went downhill from there. And I'm not at all happy that Daniela (MC's wife) ended up as a prize to be fought over/competed for.

kathedron In fairness, Daniela does object to being "raffled off like a fruit basket" but a good few pages have gone by before it occurs to any of the Jasons that maybe she should get to choose which one she wants to be with. 2w

Whereas I feel like he's just done an info-dump on me.
So now I must wonder, is this a male fantasy/delusion (that women are turned on by this kind of behaviour) or is it a parallel world? (It sure as hell isn't mine.)

Lcsmcat I vote for your first theory. 2w
rwmg Well, I can only speak for myself of course, but I still find it hard to believe that not everyone is interested in general knowledge trivia and doesn't see nice shiny snippets of fact as gifts - and not directed specifically at women (or in my case, men). 2w

This book! Do you remember as a kid when you first realized that infinity mirror reflection? Mine was a gift of a tiny blue vinyl suitcase emblazoned with an image of a little girl carrying that same suitcase with an image of that same girl carrying that same... That feeling, this book!

to be honest I was pretty 'meh' about this book until about 2/3rds of the way in when it picks up significantly. I really like Crouch's take on multiverse concepts but the beginning of the book is a bit too fast and feels rushed. I also wish Jason was a bit more fleshed out as a protagonist (I'm supposed to care about him, right?). 🤔 still, I liked the ultimate message of the book and the ending genuinely surprised me.

This is a sci-fi book for those readers that may have never read a sci-fi novel. It's as accessible as a sci-fi theme gets, peppered with elements of mystery thrown in.

I was into this audiobook from the first chapter. It got my pulse raising and kept my interest throughout. The narrator does an excellent job with all types of voices and has appropriate pace for the story.

I give this audiobook ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. This book sucked me in from the very beginning. I‘d seen reviews of people that said they just couldn‘t get into it and others that just gave up on it altogether but for me, this was the best psychological thriller I‘ve read in a long time. Doesn‘t hurt that I love physics as well so I was super enthralled with the concepts explored here. SO SO GOOD! #mbcreadathon #lovereadathonweekends

Loved this book. Blake Crouch is the next great sci-fi writer.
A man is abducted and transported to a similar, but different world where he is a stranger to his wife, he has a different job, and everything he knew never existed. This book chronicles his journey back to the place he belongs. Lots of twists and turns, constantly building tension, and an explosive climax.
Read. This. Book. ASAP!

3.5 ⭐️! I listened to the #audiobook & it was like a movie playing. This is an action-packed #scifi thriller that moves at a frenetic pace. It's essence is about regret. How far would we go to not have to live with our decisions. It was intense & a bit extreme, getting bogged down at times with Jason's obsession with his old life & getting his wife back. But it was really interesting! #Audio #PopSugarReadingChallenge #Pop19 #BOTM
