Dark Matter | Blake Crouch
Are you happy with your life? Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious. Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. Before a man Jasons never met smiles down at him and says, Welcome back, my friend. In this world hes woken up to, Jasons life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible. Is it this world or the other thats the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he couldve imaginedone that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe. Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly humana relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far well go to claim the lives we dream of.

Gripping, thought-provoking glimpse into what it might be like to encounter some of our infinite other selves in the multiverse. Poignant, fast-paced thriller with a rewarding ending.

This was an alright and quick read. I think I was mostly a little sad, because I thought there would be more to it than there actually ended up being. I had this hyped up to me, so I thought it wouldn't be as straightforward as I found it. However, I did enjoy the concept and execution of it. I will also say that I don't usually read first person pov, so that might have contributed to my experience.

A little mind-boggling for me. I can‘t say I know anything about quantum theory and multiverses, so who knows how accurate this was. But it was a fun, suspenseful read!

My daughter, for one, will be very excited to see this news. I imagine this is also true for many of us on Litsy. This book was a fun read and a series adaptation should be a lot of fun. Plus, Uncle Owen…I mean Joel Edgerton.

Yay Twitterverse with the fun news!

HOLY MOLY!! Wow wow wow. This year has been filled with good books, and this is definitely gonna be somewhere on top. 📖
Everything is about choices. Every time there is an option new universes open. So what happens when you try to reach the same goal a hundred different ways?
This was a journey into the lives that could be, whether Jason wanted them or not.

A mind boggling journey through physics and an exploration of reality and memory. Physicist Jason Dessen invents a device that allows access to all the other versions of ones life branching off from all the minute choices we make on a daily basis. He needs to discover the truth and find his wife and child in a crazy battle in the metaverse. Hard to explain but a good read, makes you think....

I clearly have an #unpopularopinion here, but after struggling through more than 100 pages, growing more irritated by the minute, and checked out some of the low reviews from Goodreads, so I know I‘m not alone, just in the minority. I found all of the characters annoying and struggled with the pacing. Crouch failed to give me a reason to care about the MC or the plot, so I‘m cutting my losses.

DGRachel I feel guilty because this is a book club book, and if my library had the audiobook available, I‘d probably switch just to finish, but there‘s a 3 week hold time and the book has to be mailed to the next person in a week and I‘m just not willing to throw away a Libro credit for a book I already dislike. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo
MicrobeMom I was not a huge fan either. I stuck with because I did the audio version 4mo

There are numerous parallels between the movie and the book. They both are Sci-Fi thrillers with a small dose of love on the side. The main characters trade places with another person or self.

Read in December 2021 for Litsy Markup Postal Book Club #LMPBC Round 13 - GroupE

Jason is a brilliant scientist who has created a method to travel through alternate realities that occur with each choice each person makes. Now he‘s stuck in his own web trying his hardest to get back to the reality he feels is his “real“ life. I know it sounds crazy but, READ IT, because it‘s fantastic.

DGRachel Murder in Chianti is on my shelf. I‘d love to read that one. I could more easily choose a mystery from my shelves than a Sci-Fi book, if that‘s the preference, but I did do a Google search for Sci-Fi Mystery Thrillers to put together my list. Should I post the four suggestions I came up with or wait to see if I need to do straight mystery? 7mo
suvata I haven‘t read Stranger in a Strange Land since high school. It would be a real treat to read it again. But any of the books sounds good to me. 7mo
rsteve388 @DGRachel Maybe Wait to do Mystery? I think @Johanna414 and I might have Scidi covered? Looks like Dark Matter might be a winner.. seems like a lot of us were excited for that one. 7mo
DGRachel I have one on my list that is a Sci-Fi/Mystery/Thriller and I‘m super excited about that one, so I‘ll probably keep that on my least. In the meantime, I‘ll grab a random selection of the mysteries on my shelves and put something together. 😍 7mo
Johanna414 Honestly, I would happily read any of these - They're all new to me! If you have your heart set on Dark Matter, I'm cool with that. I'm happy to use a different book from my list. 7mo

A really good read. I figured out the premise fairly easily & felt that Jason was maybe a bit naive, but the book pulled some hard punches when it took everything I thought I had figured out & tossed it in a blender. Gripping & enjoyable. This baby crosses a PILE of genres & it is awesome. It's just a good time, people. There are some who get gripey about it being too cliche. I say bah. It's suspenseful, it's actiony, it's twisty. Enjoy the romp.

I mean, it wasn‘t bad. It just didn‘t have me running back to see what was going to happen. I had to go back a lot to remember what was going on. Great premise, may have been better as a short story or novella.
I didn‘t get a lot done on my new blanket as a result. Nothing to make me keep listening long after bedtime.

Eh. Finally picked up my #bookspin and 10% in I‘m sorely tempted to DNF. Feels like a charmless blokey thriller, but I‘ll give it another 10% as at least it‘s dead easy to read

BookishMarginalia I actually really liked this one, and everybody I recommended it to loved it too. But if it‘s not speaking to you, definitely move on. Life‘s too short. 1y
DogMomIrene I really liked this book, but I know there were many people who didn‘t like it, especially the MC. If you‘re not liking his vibe, then DNF may be a really good decision. 1y

imyril @BookishMarginalia @DogMomIrene @ShyBookOwl I definitely think it‘s on me not on the book itself - I‘ve no particular bones to pick, I‘d just forgotten how low my threshold for thrillers is. 1y
