Dark Matter
Dark Matter | Blake Crouch
“Are you happy with your life?” Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious. Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”  In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible. Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe. Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

This was such a thought-provoking book. It was a fascinating premise, and I thought he delivered it well. The science of it wasn‘t too distracting from the storyline, even if I had no idea what was going on a few times. 😂 Overall an amazing book!

6/5 stars!! This is an excellent sci-fi novel! Thinking about it kept me lying awake on a couple nights I read it before bed. I know a little bit of quantum physics, but not enough to know if all the physics are correct or not. Within the boundary of the book, all physics were consistent. Crouch uses the multiverse theory to great effect! I'm looking forward to reading the book of his my wife just got in BotM.

An intense sci-fiction mystery/thriller.

The main character, Jason, is a scientist (teacher) living a comfortable life with his family. Until one night, his life is turn upside down. When he wakes up, he doesn't know where he is, why he's there and his family isn't his family anymore.

The only thing I didn't like was the writing but the storyline makes it up to it.

This was such an amazing mindfuck of a book! Every time I thought I was getting my bearings in the new circumstances of Jason‘s existence, Crouch upends my expectations and the status quo for the main character.

Excellent character driven speculative fiction. Rated 5 ⭐️ on Goodreads.

This book was “It‘s a Wonderful Life” rebooted as a sci-fi thriller. It was a love story. It was a quantum physics story. It was a murder, mayhem, and mystery story. It was all of this and so much more. It addresses the ramifications of the choices we make, questions the idea and nature of good and evil, flips the idea of the self on its head, and generally just screws with your sense of reality.

Sorry for the delay guys! Here are your second set of questions ! #BBBBC

I went to post yesterday and found out that canva didnt save the file like I thought it did. 😅 So had to come up with new questions because I couldn't remember the previous set.

cobwebmoth This is part of what bothered me. What makes him any better than the others? Nothing really. We just want him to win because we've been following him, but we can't even know for sure that he's the "right" one. I think it would be very tempting to look into other universes, but I wouldn't give up my current children for any alternative. 2mo
See All 11 Comments
Laughterhp I don‘t know if I‘d be willing to kill myself or another version on myself. They all were obsessed with getting back to one version of reality that I didn‘t really understand. I don‘t know if Jason1 deserved his family more than the other Jason‘s. He‘s definitely better than the other Jason who started the whole thing. I like my life, I don‘t know if I would want to explore other realities. 2mo
TheSpineView @cobwebmoth I agree with you. We just feel a connection to that Jason because we have become invested in his story. I actually would like to the an alternate universe that has no wars and everyone lives in harmony with nature and others. 2mo
BookwormAHN I think it would be too weird to have to take my life back from myself. I'm not sure what I would do. We definitely feel more of a connection with Jason 1 because we are invested in his story. He does seem better the the second one but we don't really get to meet or see what the others have been through. The weird thing is that in no reality does Amanda follow him back to his universe. Yes, I would definitely want to check out new realities. 2mo
cherinium I agree with the consensus that the reader is made to feel sympathetic to Jason 1 by presenting his path as "the real Jason." I was definitebothered by the idea of having to fight against alternate versions of oneself. I believe his wife was confronted with an impossible choice at the end. I don't think I'd have any interest in visiting alt realities. I 2nd guess my choices enough as it is. I wouldn't want the added layer of knowing what may have been 2mo
RJHowe That is the beautiful ambivalence if the novel. That all perspectives on justice are relative. Or are they? And the ones who are willing to murder for dominance not inferior in some way? 2mo
RJHowe Oh...and thanks for the great thought provoking questions! 2mo
HufflepuffGirl90 I really felt sympathetic to Jason1, but at the same time, who‘s to say he was the “right” one. Was there a right one, really, and what makes that Jason better than all the others? Such an interesting idea that we root for Jason1 just because he is the one with the steady perspective in the book. I think it would be interesting to visit other realities, but without the life choices that made those possible, I definitely wouldn‘t want to switch 2mo
swatreads I think yes....i understood and was empathetic to jason 1 because we know the story from his perspective only. If i find myself in a parallel universe living a life i like better then i would probably go live that life given that my parents are the same even there😊 2mo

The first set of questions are here #BBBBC! I am curious as to how you all enjoyed this one! It's an interesting mix of genres, packed into an almost light read.

#scififantasybookclub

Laughterhp 1. I enjoyed the book. There was a lot going on, my eyes glazed over a bit at some parts, but it also felt like a light read. I‘m glad I read it, but I don‘t know if I would read another book my Blake Crouch. 2. I would probably freak out just like Jason did. I would probably try and find someone else I knew in my old world to see what was going on. 3. Reading about the multiverse was interesting, they made it seem real in this book. 2mo
See All 17 Comments
InLibrisVeritas @Laughterhp I am in the same boat as you, I don't really feel the urge to grab more of his work even though I enjoyed it. 2mo
bookandcat I liked it, I don't know if I'll pick up his Pines series but I'd be up for other stand alones. I would completely freak out if it were me though, lol. Multiverse theory is a very legit physics theory so I enjoy the fun of seeing it play out here even if I don't think this is the actuality of how a real multiverse would function. It's like a pulpier more action packed take on physics compared to Donnie Darko's slower more think-heavy take. 2mo
BookwormAHN 1. This was a reread for me and I think I enjoyed it more the second time. I would probably read more by him. 2. O think I would plead amnesia until I figured out what was going on. 3. I found the idea of the multiverse fascinating but it was a little too much by the end of the book with that many versions of him running around. 2mo
TheSpineView 1. I enjoyed it even though it was a reread for me. I would like to read more by Crouch. 2. I am sure I would freak some if I was in the same situation. Even though I normally keep a cool head. 3. I liked the use of the multiverse in the plot. It made it seem plausible. I am not really a believer in that particular theory. 2mo
cherinium I loved reading this book. I found the multiverse theory to be a great vehicle for the plot. My brain starts to cramp when I begin to think of multiverse being a real thing. It feels more comforting to believe that there is only one reality. I think I would be horribly depressed at the prospect at losing my entire life if I woke in a similar situation. I would read more by Crouch, but I probably won't seek it out. 2mo
cobwebmoth It was just okay for me. I liked Pines a lot better. I think I've just read too many books and comics that deal with multi-verse theory. I'd like to think I would react better to the situation he faced, but I'd probably just have a panic attack. 2mo
swatreads I loved the book. I find multiverse theme very exciting. And if i were to wake up like that i would be scared to death! I'd love to read more books by Blake Crouch. Pines is in my Tbr. I don't believe in multiverse obviously but i think the idea of a parallel universe is very interesting and imagining yourself in another world living a different life is so thrilling! 2mo
BethM I liked it and I‘d try other books by him of similar nature. The multiverse fascinates me. I found the first half of the book slow and then it picked right up! 2mo
RJHowe Loved the book and am sure to read more. I am a strong believer in the multiverse theory since it was proposed by author Michael Moorcock. Current physics seems to suggest he was right. 2mo
RJHowe How would I react? Hard to say. I have read some much alt earth fiction and current physics at least I would have a grounding. 2mo
Eyelit I enjoyed this book from start to finish - what a ride! I‘ll definitely check out more of Crouch‘s work (didn‘t he do that Pines series?) I don‘t know that I‘d be quite as functional as Jason in the beginning but I definitely had a lot of the same troubleshooting thoughts as him throughout so I‘d like to think I‘d do ok eventually. 😁 the multiverse theory is fascinates me and I‘m all for it 2mo
InLibrisVeritas @Eyelit I believe he did do the Pinee series! I'd probably be extremely angry right away, and probably end up worse off than he did when he tried running 😂 2mo
InLibrisVeritas @RJHowe I think the multiverse theory is incredibly cool, but the small primative part of me is freaked out by it 😂 But I think I'd have some grounding initially too, I'd just be upset that some other version of me thought that this switch would be okay 2mo
HufflepuffGirl90 Late to the party (sorry guys). But I loved the book, was totally hooked from the beginning. I definitely don‘t think I would have done as well as Jason did in the beginning. I‘d like to think I would, but let‘s be honest, I would be freaking out. I love the idea of multiverses. 😊 2mo

Font size comparison of the two books I'm currently working on. Why have I never tried large print before!? Probably because it isn't as readily accessible as regular font sizes. I didn't realize what I'd been missing, I could honestly cry. Reading actual books is so difficult for me. Headaches, eye strain, short attention span. But I've just read the first 50 pages in nearly 20 minutes. I can't do that w/ small print anymore! I need more of this!

LauraJ I love print books, but sometimes i have to go with the ebook for the same reason. 2mo
madamereadsalot1 @LauraJ 95% of the books I read are in ebook format too. This book is my first large print experience, and it's so fantastic! I've missed being able to read print comfortably. It's been years! I'll still primarily read ebook because of convenience (especially the library lending!) but it's good to know I have options for print now too! 2mo

It was fun, reasonably complex in the plot, fast-paced and compelling. Just needs a few hours of your time and the pages keep turning themselves, largely due to Crouch's writing style of using short paragraphs and chapters. I couldn't read the last couple of chapters fast enough! The ending left me wondering about a possible sequel. Is there one? Overall a fun, entertaining read which I can see being turned into a movie I'd watch.

This was my second time reading this book. I really enjoyed it. In fact I think I liked it better this time. I was able to catch a few extra little details. The idea behind this book is that every decision we make or could make creates it's own reality. So we have our own multiverse. Now what if there was a way into the multiverse so that we could pick a different present. It's a intriguing and frightening idea 🕋

I could really sum this up in two words: Mind. Blown. What surprised me the most is that while this is a mind bending sci-fi thriller, at it‘s core it‘s truly a love story and what a man is willing to do for those he loves. The world Blake Crouch created was, well to be blunt, a bit of a mind f**k. But in the best way possible. Don‘t ponder the reality of that world too much because your head might actually explode. Truly didn‘t want this to end

RvnclawWhovian @OnlyYoo LOL too funny! Omg the perfume in there!! And it was always so dark! I did, however, like the music. But that was about it 😂 3mo
RvnclawWhovian @WitBeyndMehsure so freakin good! I practically read it in one sitting. When I finished, I knew it was almost done but I read the last page and realized that was it and was like, “Wait, what? It‘s over?! Noo!” 3mo
Lauraandherbooks I daydream a lot so hard to narrow that down 😁, first job was at a book warehouse, a book I recently bailed on #theshack it‘s a good book but as a mother it was hard to read emotionally 3mo
RvnclawWhovian @Lauraandherbooks a book warehouse sounds like an awesome first job! 3mo
RvnclawWhovian @Eggs thanks for making these every week! 3mo
Drocchio03 When I bail on a book there is a twinge of guilt, but sometimes you have to say, “why am I torturing myself?”! Especially when it‘s “AA” 😉 3mo
Lauraandherbooks @RvnclawWhovian it was pretty awesome working at a book warehouse but it was books for the university and I couldn‘t even borrow one 😂 3mo
