Big Magic
Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear | Elizabeth Gilbert
The instant #1 NEW YORK TIMES BestsellerNamed a Hot Fall Read by USA Today, Vanity Fair, Newsday, O Magazine, the Seattle Times, Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Mashable, Pop Sugar, and the San Antonio Express-News"A must read for anyone hoping to live a creative life... I dare you not to be inspired to be brave, to be free, and to be curious.” —PopSugarFrom the worldwide bestselling author of Eat Pray Love: the path to the vibrant, fulfilling life you’ve dreamed of.   Readers of all ages and walks of life have drawn inspiration and empowerment from Elizabeth Gilbert’s books for years. Now this beloved author digs deep into her own generative process to share her wisdom and unique perspective about creativity. With profound empathy and radiant generosity, she offers potent insights into the mysterious nature of inspiration. She asks us to embrace our curiosity and let go of needless suffering. She shows us how to tackle what we most love, and how to face down what we most fear. She discusses the attitudes, approaches, and habits we need in order to live our most creative lives. Balancing between soulful spirituality and cheerful pragmatism, Gilbert encourages us to uncover the “strange jewels” that are hidden within each of us. Whether we are looking to write a book, make art, find new ways to address challenges in our work,  embark on a dream long deferred, or simply infuse our everyday lives with more mindfulness and passion, Big Magic cracks open a world of wonder and joy. From the Hardcover edition.

#BFCr2 photo challenge!

I was enamored with this book when I read it a few years ago. I think fear keeps us from lots of things, creative or otherwise. Gilbert put out an interesting podcast to go along with the book, where she helped creatives who were stuck. Check it out!

Was this profound? No. Was this smart? Yes. To me this read as ideas I was for the most part acquainted with arranged in a sensible, useful outline. A few points did particularly catch my interest, and a few I completely tuned out during. All in all I found it lackluster.

BlameJennyJane I did this one in print a couple of years against and felt similarly. Lackluster, but there were nuggets. 1mo
IndoorDame @BlameJennyJane that's good to hear. I always vaguely wonder when I don't really connect with an audio book if I would have with the print version (never the other way around though) well, not good that you didn't enjoy it but you know what I mean... (edited) 1mo
BlameJennyJane @IndoorDame ha ha. I thought maybe I wasn‘t hearing the author‘s “true voice” and perhaps I should have tried the audio version. Lol 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo

JSW I feel like this kind of book is all about timing, but good to have in your library for when you might need it. I bought an awesome career changing book that did nothing for me but I‘m saving it for someday😂. 1mo

I‘ve listened to Elizabeth Gilbert‘s “Big Magic” once a year for 3 years. It‘s my reminder that creativity is a necessity, and I love her voice. So last night when I got to see Liz in person it made my heart so happy. She was, of course, amazing.

Reading this book was an exercise in perseverance. Unless you prescribe to Gilbert's notion of 'Big Magic'--the mystical kinetic energy that flows in and around you waiting for you to acquiesce--this book reads of nonsense.

I don't believe it's the author's intention to be self-aggrandizing but my goodness! Her creative 'plights' and name dropping become insufferable.

Gilbert is a relatable fiction writer. Not a life coach.

I enjoy knitting, but I didn‘t call myself a “Knitter” because I only made things I knit or purled. However, I asked this yarn what pattern it wanted to be, and clearly, so CLEARLY it told me this was the ONLY acceptable pattern. So I had to learn 3 new stitches, because rainbow yarn should get to choose the pattern, and it turns out, I needed to do something different and creative.

And now that I know 5 stitches, I‘m a Knitter.

Overall, I enjoyed listening to this enough that I bought a physical copy to flip through from time to time for a little pick-me-up or to share with my students when they are feeling paralyzed by perfectionism and fear of failure. Gilbert embraces failure as part of a “Who cares? Just have fun” process - not a new idea by any means, but comforting nonetheless.

Big fan of Elizabeth Gilbert. She makes this interesting point about killing fear. This resonates with me; however, I'm conflicted. She wants the reader to invite fear in to co-exist with creativity. 🤨

I finished this audiobook while taking a walk break at work. Maybe self-help books are just not for me. I think this book would be great for people who are already a little creative in their lives. I wanted this book to help inspire a more creative side of myself, but it fell short of doing that. The conclusion was the beat part. #Gratitude30 Day 29: A book about #Creativity that I wish I loved more. Not only was the research aspect problematic, there were also a lot of personal claims that are packaged to be universal, without recognition that the view is coming from a position of unexamined privilege. Art isn‘t simply decorative or an ornament of the soul. For people coming from disadvantaged communities, art can be a subversive act, life-saving & a source of redemption.

hermyknee I like your review! 8mo
LA_Mead Great review! I think for me reading it felt like hearing a lot of things that I already knew... I so wanted to like it because I like Elizabeth Gilbert! 8mo
Chrissyreadit @GatheringBooks So glad to read your review! There are many people who do not grasp that privilege is insidious and the removal of arts from schools is is in my mind a horrific act of injustice. 8mo

readordierachel Great review! Those are such important points. 8mo
GatheringBooks @hermyknee thank you! :) 8mo
GatheringBooks @LA_Mead oh yes, i definitely understand and get the appeal. it is engaging, readable, common-sensical and ultimately empowering. i suppose i am also coming from a researcher‘s perspective who has done work in the field and found a few of the sweeping generalizations problematic, without taking into account differing realities. 8mo
GatheringBooks @Chrissyreadit i agree wholeheartedly. while i appreciated gilbert‘s empowering premise, the recognition that the arts could mean differently to various people not from a similar privileged background as hers did not seem to register in her consciousness, at all. 8mo
GatheringBooks @readordierachel thank you! i had a long discussion with an aussie friend who was so surprised at the one-star rating i gave this book. i had hoped to elucidate those points as best as i could given the limited number of characters allowed in a litsy review. hehe. definitely forces one to be concise and distilled. 8mo
LA_Mead @GatheringBooks a researcher! What a cool job! What do you research? 8mo
GatheringBooks @LA_Mead hahhaa the psychology of creativity, psychology of high creatives - published a fair bit on the subject. i am a clinical psychologist who now works as a teacher educator here in singapore. :) 8mo
batsy Great review. I've seen a lot of positive reviews that didn't address these issues, so thank you for doing so! 8mo
GatheringBooks @batsy in fairness, i think it is appreciated at face value, and absolutely nothing wrong with that too - i suppose my academic background may have to do with my distaste for the whole thing. 8mo
LA_Mead @GatheringBooks that is so cool!!! I‘m a high school teacher at the moment... 8mo

This is hands-down my favorite writing craft book! (French)

Gilbert not only provides insight into being an author, but into being any creative, too.

She packs it with anecdotes, thoughts and mindsets to try out. It's not your usual writing craft book. It's more about creativity itself and how to embrace it with all your might!

P.S.: I lent it to my mom and it's genuinely helping her get a prototype ready for her business. Isn't that amazing?!
