The Circle
The Circle | Dave Eggers
The Circle is the exhilarating new novel from Dave Eggers, best-selling author of A Hologram for the King, a finalist for the National Book Award. When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

This book may seem exaggerated in its dystopian vision but is it really so? I look at our world and encounter uncomfortable similarities. #Booked2019 #SocialMediaFocus @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

Cinfhen It was a little too close for comfort but I hated how Eggers made the MC such a dishrag 😬 1w
LeticiaToraci @Cinfhen I think that the style of writing had a bit of magical realism to it, for example, when Mae met that old couple on the barge it was as if she was meeting her parents who were hiding after the circle was completed. Many thing seemed to be made intentionally for symbolic reasons, one of them being Mae's utter lack of consciousness. 1w
Cinfhen I honestly wasn‘t reading so intently... I missed a lot of those nuances😬 1w
LeticiaToraci When I like a book I usually have theories about it, if they are correct or the right way to interpret the book Idk, but I often imagine them. 😉 1w
LeticiaToraci The film finished very different from the book. I don't know if it was better, to me it seemed like a forced happy ending. 1w

I listened to this on audio in my car, and I was so invested that I wished that I had copies in multiple formats! Sharing is caring is one of the mottos of the technology company known as The Circle. And we certainly do already live in a world of likes, smiles and comments. What if one company had the power to take all the data for the country and use it to achieve their goals? Did not see the movie. Finished4/30. #booked2019 #socialmediafocus

Cinfhen Great choice for this prompt!!! 3w

I read this for the around the year challenge in 52 books for prompt #36 a book featured on the NPR best books of the year. It had a good premise but wasn‘t executed all that well. You could see where society could get like this though with social@media. It did keep me turning the pages. I‘m still going to put it as a pick. #aty2019 #aroundtheyearin52books

I have avoided this one after seeing some bad reviews... but I begrudgingly put it on my tbr when it was added to the #1001books list last year, and I needed a #socialmediafocus book for #Booked2019, so here we are.

I really enjoyed this audiobook! The MC is unlikable in her selfish naivety and it‘s sort of preachy, but it‘s also scary how easily we could get here as a society. Definitely in the vein of 1984 Fahrenheit 451. 😱

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

DivineDiana I am listening to this now (also for booked 2019) and I am liking it so far! Did not know it was on 1001 list! (edited) 1mo
Cinfhen I‘m in the HATED camp but maybe in audio it would have worked better for me. 1mo
Reggie The part where she gets reprimanded for not responding to those throwing the dinner party for fans of Portugal. Lololol what craziness. 1mo
sprainedbrain @Reggie that was insane! I was to the point of cringing every time someone said ‘I feel.‘ 😂 1mo
Exbrarian I didn‘t like it. I also didn‘t feel like it was as poignant as it is credited for. My vote for most overrated this decade. 1mo

Not a fan.

The story: Mae is hired to work at The Circle, and its everything she ever wanted - it‘s a dream job.

Socializing is one thing, but just how far into personal lives should one really go?

My take: Poor writing style. Breaking the book into three segments did NOT work for me. Way too hard to read without having a defined breaking point.

Why the Pan: Mae‘s downward spiral was way too fast and unrealistic. She became so unlikable.

KathyWheeler I was always wanting to slap Mae when I read this book. 1mo

Cinfhen Good choice, although I really DISLIKED this book. Couldn‘t stand the female MC 1mo
MelissaSue81 @Cinfhen - I can understand that. Reviews on this one are really mixed. I did audio for this with Dion Graham which I thought was an interesting choice for a book so heavily focused on a female main character, but it actually worked! The story really sucked me in though. It was one of those where I couldn‘t wait to get back in the car to listen more. 1mo

This book was captivating from the beginning and it became increasingly intriguing as the story progressed. It really makes you think about the Internet and social networking with new dynamics and it casts a scarier and more radical light on what the world would possibly be like if we had not sense. 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

Recently finished The Circle and it was amazing! The story follows Mae Holland as she starts working for the Circle which is a combination of Facebook, Google, and Amazon all in one. At first everything seamed like a dream come true until you understand what the Circle truly is. The book is fast paced and has a chilling modern 1984 feel to it. 💻📚🤓

Do you read the Litsy postings about your current read? Do they influence your opinion if the book? I‘ve been listening to this in the car and need to get it finished by the end of this week. I drive about 30 minutes each way so it should be doable. However, after reading some posts I‘m not too hopeful about the ending 😬

So yeah, literary dystopian science fiction is a thing apparently. Though, truth be told, this is like reading horror—though not new, I can‘t imagine anything worse than the vision but forward in this book, a world in which “Secrets are lies, Sharing is caring, Privacy is theft.” Mae goes to work at Circle, the most powerful internet company in the world, & the story goes from there. Ok, but not great. Definitely a scary vision of the future.

Ok all. Do you read a book BEFORE you watch the movie or do you read a book AFTER you've seen the movie.
If you're wondering what team I am on, I've already read this book.... 😂

Kimberlone I do both! I definitely don‘t wait though if there‘s a movie I want to see. Personally I thought the movie version of that book wasn‘t very good, though. I had higher hopes for a movie with Tom Hanks and Emma Watson. 9mo
TheSpineView I prefer to read the book first. Though that does not always happen. 9mo
MyBookSwapClub I'm thinking to see this movie tonight :) 9mo

2BR02B It really depends. If it's a book I've already been meaning to read for awhile, I'll try to read the book first. If I discovered the movie before the book, I usually watch the movie first. One always seems to ruin the other for me, so it's just a question of whether I'm more interested in the movie or the book. 9mo
2BR02B OR, if the book's the first of a series? I usually don't wait until I've read them all to watch the movie/show (thinking specifically of GoT here). 9mo
Redwritinghood I usually read the book after. Otherwise, the movie is always disappointing. 9mo

A contemporary attempt at a "1984"-esque story, using the internet and social media. But where no one the world has ever read "1984", and everyone is happily willing to give up their rights and freedoms. The concept had potential, but the execution was over the top & unrealistic. And the main character was an unrelatable moron. How did this become a movie?! ?

bookandcat The movie fixes some of the problematic issues with the book but isn't a great movie. That being said, nearly all of the book actually currently exists in one way or another or is based on something that exists. I don't see it as unrealistic at all in that sense. But it's a bit of a weird book, I will say that. 9mo
Cailey_Mac Yeah, I ended up DNF‘ing after a particular scene where I was like “Why did she go see him AGAIN???” Like the main character seemed like she might have some intelligence and the book is all “lemme fix that” 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ 9mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Cailey_Mac Seriously. I'm peeved at how little the male author thinks of women. She's a pathetic lemming. If the character was so dynamic, universal, relatable, and realistic then why couldn't he have written it from a male perspective? I don't think any educated person (Mae) would have not at least internally questioned her situation. And it only got worse from where u left it. 9mo

It is disturbing to observe that all the active villains in The Circle are female: Mae is presented as the sexual predator, the stalker, the one without a conscience, Annie the person who got her into all this with the shady racist, classist and criminal ancestry, the located criminal is a woman who killed her own children but the controllers behind it all who never admit any responsibility are, you guessed it: male. Read another 100+ pages, super easy reading. In respect to reviews of this being a 1984 ripoff you have to admit that it highlights how horrified Orwell would be in our current willingness to give total control to others via our online presence. Funny but poignant anecdotes about the stupidity and mediocrity of many social media interactions, litsy not excluded. 😲

The blurb on the back warns you that there is a sinister truth behind the enormous internet company 'The Circle'. Pretty everything the Circle tells Mae is lies but does the author have to insult the reader's intelligence by being so obvious about it? More YA than adult I'd say. Going to encourage a 13yo to read this and see what they believe. Still going to read til the end.

An underwhelming ending neutralized any enjoyment I felt during this otherwise compelling read. I wish Eggers would have opted for a "bad ending" of a different sort, allowing the antagonists' plans to come to fruition as a warning to the readers about the risks of forfeiting liberty for security.

I am on the fence about this one. It is a compulsive read. I couldn‘t put it down but the ending is meh. I feel like Eggers ripped off 1984 but set it in the age of Google/Facebook. It‘s not bad but Mae is so bland. There are some scary things about it but I think it could have been a lot better.

Started first with 1984 by J. Orwell and that was not going very well but then was suggested this book, and this was digested at a different speed 😁. The concept is similar to one of Orwell's but this one felt a lot easier to relate to. We are basically a step or a step and a half away from this scenario.
