This story is told through a young boy's letters and journal entries. He writes to his favorite author to learn how to become a writer but his letters slowly show that he is dealing with a lot: his parent's divorce, feeling lonely, his lunch being stolen, and poverty. This is a heavy book for a young reader but it is good to expose them to these topics. 4 ⭐️

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards One of my Children's Lit students last year - a working educator - did a fabulous analysis of this book. I love all the new diverse material being published, but it makes me sad that some of these classics will fall out of style and not get the attention they deserve. 2y

In 2022, making contact with your favorite author is no biggie. All it takes is a DM! But when Beverly Cleary wrote Dear Mr. Henshaw in 1983, making this connection required a little more time and effort — and main character Leigh Botts makes that investment time and again as he becomes pen pal to author Boyd Henshaw. On today‘s episode of my podcast, author Jeff Zentner talks about how this book has influenced him. Link to listen in my bio!

My theme this year is "Award Winners Edition"
The John #Newbery Medal is awarded annually for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. Started in 1922, it was the first children's book award in the world.

Newbery winner from 1984. It felt a little one-note at first (remember when a book could just be about Having Divorced Parents?) but won me over in the end with subplots about lunchbox thieves, homemade alarms, and #kidlit authors. I‘m not sure how well it would hold up overall for kids today, but I enjoyed it. #audiobook #hoopla

These are a few of the middle grade books from my childhood that I‘ve held on to. Nancy got me started loving “chapter books”, and each of these was special and exciting to me in its own way.

I enjoyed reading this book out loud to my class. I got the teacher kit from the library and I loved the questions and writing extensions in it ( it was nice to have some pre-planning done during report cards and marking, marking, marking)

Dear ssgp stalker,

Just so you know, my Litsy TBR is all books that I do not own, and my Goodreads account (same username) shows books that I have read, if you're worried about that. But I know I will be very happy with anything you send!

Now on to do a little stalking of my own!!

This RF, Newberry award winner is a great choice for AS because students can write to an author just as Leigh Botts does. Leigh‘s favorite author,Mr. Henshaw, encourages Leigh to keep a journal where he is able to reflect on the challenges of his life such as his lunch being stolen, his parents divorce, having no friends at a new school and much more. Beverly Clearly is a phenomenal author who writes about real childhood experiences. #ucflae3414f17

CaseyL https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/dear-mr-hensha... the scholastic website provides multiple classroom activities related to this book. My favorite is having students create their own lunch box alarms just as Leigh did in the book! 6y
CaseyL UDL 7.2 optimize relevance, value, and authenticity can be used if students create their own journals like Leigh. Keeping a journal is relevant to students who like to write, and keeping track of the challenges and events in life can be valuable to students. EL 42 have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important information, can be used if students use the dates on Leigh‘s journal entries to put his most important ones in order. 6y
DrSpalding Scholastic is a fantastic resource. What a great idea to use this book in an author study and have the students write to the author, just like in the book. Fantastic! 6y

I was going to go with The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society for #epistolary, since the letter format at first kept me from reading it! But then I saw this one on my shelf--probably the first epistolary novel I ever read. It's a sweet story that handles some difficult issues through a boy's correspondence with an author. #readjanuary

I admit it. I totally fail as an English teacher. I had to look up the word #Epistolary 😳 for #JanuaryReads #DayFour
After I looked up the definition, my first thought went to Bram Stoker's Dracula, but then I remembered one of my favorite books from my childhood (and resulted in my writing several fan letters to favorite authors): Dear Mr. Henshaw. You can never go wrong with Beverly Cleary.

I remember this book so well back in elementary school. Wondering about a book to place under the Tree for your young kids? This may be a good choice. It's about a 6th-grade boy who starts in a new school after his parents divorce, & he has a pen pal in his favorite author per a class project. This book hit home for me on so many levels. It's in epistolary format, which adds to its indelibility. Beautiful! #PairWith: Swiss Miss hot chocolate.

Chachic I remember enjoying this as a kid! I devoured all the Newbery books that were available in Manila. 7y
