The Thirteenth Tale
The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel | Diane Setterfield
When Margaret Lea opened the door to the past, what she confronted was her destiny. All children mythologize their birth...So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's collection of stories, which are as famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale as they are for the delight and enchantment of the twelve that do exist. The enigmatic Winter has spent six decades creating various outlandish life histories for herself -- all of them inventions that have brought her fame and fortune but have kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she at last wants to tell the truth about her extraordinary life. She summons biographer Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth, hidden by those who loved her most, remains an ever-present pain. Struck by a curious parallel between Miss Winter's story and her own, Margaret takes on the commission. As Vida disinters the life she meant to bury for good, Margaret is mesmerized. It is a tale of gothic strangeness featuring the Angelfield family, including the beautiful and willful Isabelle, the feral twins Adeline and Emmeline, a ghost, a governess, a topiary garden and a devastating fire. Margaret succumbs to the power of Vida's storytelling but remains suspicious of the author's sincerity. She demands the truth from Vida, and together they confront the ghosts that have haunted them while becoming, finally, transformed by the truth themselves. The Thirteenth Tale is a love letter to reading, a book for the feral reader in all of us, a return to that rich vein of storytelling that our parents loved and that we loved as children. Diane Setterfield will keep you guessing, make you wonder, move you to tears and laughter and, in the end, deposit you breathless yet satisfied back upon the shore of your everyday life.

I feel like it has been a while since I read a really good book and this is really fecking good. Beautifully written at a slow pace that allows for very rich description and atmosphere while not sacrificing tension. The Characters are vivid, even the 'girl listening to the story' is herself an interesting character. Technically it is a country house mystery, but more in the vein of Rebecca or Atonement. Strong pick.

So glad I finally read this book! It‘s been on my TBR for way too long. Probably the book longest on my goodreads TBR.

This book was so atmospheric. A perfect fall read (that I read in august). I accidentally started listening to the abridged version on audio. Once I got a bit in and stopped listening to the abridged, I picked up the print book.

I‘m probably the last person to have read this book. Thanks for the book! @inthegreensandblues

Ahh! I accidentally started listening to an Abridged version of this book!

I thought it was weird a 400 page book was only 7 hours on audio and just figured out where it says abridged.

Now what?! I‘ve gotten 29% into it and dunno if I should try and find the unabridged version and start over.

SilversReviews Yes. Read the entire book. It is so good. 10mo
megnews I liked this one a lot 10mo
Kimberlone Wow why do they even make abridged versions of books that aren‘t even that long to begin with?! I can see the appeal of an abridged version of War and Peace or Les Miserables, but not this one ☝️ 10mo

Well this was a nice surprise. I didn‘t have high expectations for some reason, but I absolutely loved it! I love it when a book does that. Reading this was like a cosy hug. A well told story, a nice bit of mystery combined with a family saga, a narrator who prefers books to people, and some ghosts and other things sprinkled through. Just a good, old fashioned story that I could not put down all week and was just what I needed.

An atmospheric tale with an unreliable narrator. Is anyone who they seem? Not 100% in my usual genre, I‘ve had this off and on my tbr a few times. I‘m so glad I got to listen to it on the way home from a road trip. I recommend the audio.

Dual timelines! ‼️

1. Usually, I enjoy them. Although I‘ve found I‘m much more critical of plot holes in dual timeline stories.
2. Really enjoyed this one! 💕
3. I‘ve mostly seen dual timelines used in historical fiction (for obvious reasons) and mysteries, but I would love to see a sci fi story told like that.

#SundayFunday Have a great day, and don‘t forget to tag me!

🎧 Well another gothic-like story of suspense & mystery. Started so slow & wound up to a quick exciting ending. A famous author shares her life story as the rumored missing 13th tale. Twins, ghosts, bizarre behavior, arson, lies, family secrets. Margaret (the author‘s biographer) lives a similar life. Twists!! Lovely prose! The use of some similes were 🙄 but please overlook them cuz it‘s an engaging well-written read! Not scary! ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Day five of #7Days7Books that influenced me. I read this by recommendation from my fellow librarians. It was so dull up until page 50 I almost didn‘t finish it. BUT THEN! Dark and disturbing, like a story written by Poe and I couldn‘t put it down. I have now read her other books also. So good.

I love these types of books so much. It reminded me so much of the structure of The Seven Husband's of Evelyn Hugo while being its own story. I have a weird soft spot for older sort of crabby people who just want you to sit down, shut up and listen to their story.
