The Thirteenth Tale
The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel | Diane Setterfield
When Margaret Lea opened the door to the past, what she confronted was her destiny. All children mythologize their birth...So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's collection of stories, which are as famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale as they are for the delight and enchantment of the twelve that do exist. The enigmatic Winter has spent six decades creating various outlandish life histories for herself -- all of them inventions that have brought her fame and fortune but have kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she at last wants to tell the truth about her extraordinary life. She summons biographer Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth, hidden by those who loved her most, remains an ever-present pain. Struck by a curious parallel between Miss Winter's story and her own, Margaret takes on the commission. As Vida disinters the life she meant to bury for good, Margaret is mesmerized. It is a tale of gothic strangeness featuring the Angelfield family, including the beautiful and willful Isabelle, the feral twins Adeline and Emmeline, a ghost, a governess, a topiary garden and a devastating fire. Margaret succumbs to the power of Vida's storytelling but remains suspicious of the author's sincerity. She demands the truth from Vida, and together they confront the ghosts that have haunted them while becoming, finally, transformed by the truth themselves. The Thirteenth Tale is a love letter to reading, a book for the feral reader in all of us, a return to that rich vein of storytelling that our parents loved and that we loved as children. Diane Setterfield will keep you guessing, make you wonder, move you to tears and laughter and, in the end, deposit you breathless yet satisfied back upon the shore of your everyday life.

Love this story!
But let's get real. What time period is it from?! What age is it set in?
1950s? 1980s? When was Mrs. DeWinter young?!

O.M.G.!!!

I need to read this again. There were so many moments at the end where I was like “wait, what?!” “nooooo!” “huh?” “I should‘ve known!!!”

Thank you to everyone who voted for this #MakeMeReadIt! Amazing book full of so many twists and a ton of bookish references. As a bookworm, I totally related to Margaret‘s thoughts and comments throughout the book.

5 star read FOR SURE!

Yesterday was my birthday! Getting older isn‘t very exciting but getting new books is!

The Librarian of Auschwitz and A Fire Story were gifts from a friend. The Thirteenth Tale, Call it What You Want, and Recursion all came from my husband. Technically, so did Romanov and the Alice journal, as he gave me a gift card to The Dog Eared Book in Palmyra, NY and it was burning a hole in my pocket so I had to go spend it right away!

Paired today‘s lunchtime reading with a ham & cheese sandwich! 🥪

Currently in a monogamous relationship with this book. I‘m so into this story, and a lot of the little details are starting to fit together like a puzzle 🧩

Miss Winter‘s tale has me on the edge of my seat, and I‘m enjoying every second of it!

brit91 Sandwich looks delicious! You can never go wrong with good food and a good book!😁😁 2d
emz711 The book is incredible and when you get to the end, you'll want to read it all over again 2d
laur89 @brit91 My recipe for happiness is exactly that! @emz711 I already want to go back and reread... I feel like I missed out on SO much already. Some of the things I‘m thinking, duh, how did I miss that connection?! 2d

emz711 @laur89 I've read it 3 or 4 times and just wow. I was a bit disappointed with her next 2 books because they were missing such a huge twist 2d
emz711 My favorite question, what age do you think the book takes place in? 2d
laur89 @emz711 It definitely seems worth that many rereads!!! That‘s a tough one. I feel like it‘s got to be in the early 1900s. The talk of carriages, handwritten transcripts/copies, and the books frequently mentioned throughout like Jane Eyre are my clues. I could totally be off though! I also feel like I should know the answer to this question when I‘m so close to the end... 2d

This is definitely a book for book lovers. The descriptions of books and reading and the importance of both are lovely. The story is a wonderful example of gothic fiction. It has many delicious gothic elements that are reminiscent of other classics but with a modern lens. It has been in my #TBR for quite some time, and I am glad I finally got around to reading it.

I started this audio book today.

I‘ve only tried an audiobook once and I was constantly getting distracted. My mind wandered and I‘d miss whole passages. Let‘s see if I have better luck this time.

MarriedtoMrT I have very specific tasks I can do while listening: walking, driving, cleaning, puzzling. If I have too much on my mind or if it‘s something I have to concentrate too hard on or not enough on (like when I‘m just sitting) my mind wanders too much. I hope you find your audio groove! 2mo
julesG Mind wandering, getting distracted, falling asleep, missing parts... It happens. Depending on the book, I go back a few minutes or I roll with it. 2mo
Cortg Good luck! I usually do audiobooks as rereads, nonfiction or books I‘m curious about but not dying to read, that way if my mind wanders a bit, I‘m ok with it. I did listen to this one on audio! 2mo

CoverToCoverGirl I hope you had success listening this time! 2mo
TaciturnWhenReading @MarriedtoMrT @JulesG @Cortg @emz711 @CoverToCoverGirl Thanks all! I‘ve been listening only when driving to/from work. The story has grabbed me - the narration is really well done - so it‘s been much easier to stay focused this time! 2mo

I had a hard time thinking of any books I have read with doppelgangers in them (which is weird? why do all the books fly out of my brain when it's #startreksummermay time?), so instead have a book about twins? I haven't read it in a thousand years but I remember liking it.

Also, there has to be Trek novels about Thomas, right?

“Tell me the truth.” A phrase repeated through the book, that was eventually answered. But the truth was so much stranger than the rumors. The end took me by surprise, but I was really ready to be done with it a few hours from finishing. I had no particular affinity for any of the characters, which always makes the book more enjoyable for me. 3/5⭐️

Although I rated this book 4/5 stars on Goodreads many years ago, upon finishing the audiobook I have to increase my rating! This book is superb and manipulates language until it becomes art.

With a gothic feel, a gruesome story within a story, and a cast full of intriguing characters, the fantastic dual narrators maintained the tone experienced while reading and even helped clarify muddier areas.

I can‘t recommend this book highly enough.

Immediately engaging, The Thirteenth Tale has a lot going for it: creepy-cozy gothic, spooky setting, and a set-up that had me hooked. It‘s a Brontë-lover‘s dream. I was fine overlooking the over-the-top elements, but the character and plot development in the latter half left me feeling half-satisfied. Upside: Olivia Colman stars in the BBC adaptation so I‘m gonna have to track that down. Photo by Tom Murphy VII

This book was an ode to the love of books. It was gothic and mysterious and enchanting. Just lovely. I wish I could read it for the first time again. The enigmatic world famous author Vida Winter telling her life story to a young biographer who grew up in a bookstore learning to read amidst the dusty tomes, this story pulled me in and I didn't want to let go. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
