Sorry for the delay but this is headed your way Carrie!

I'm not entirely sure what I just read lol. Equal parts anti-war satire, social critique, musings on family & dealing with grief, ending with a fever dream of revelations...this book was indeed weird & lacked cohesiveness, but I like weird books! I've heard his non-fiction reads better. He has some powerful 1-liners & I felt some emotion towards the end, so I do see potential! Maybe ⭐️⭐️💫?

CSeydel Ack, I need to get a move on - I‘m still reading 2d
lele1432 @CSeydel I did feel like that one needed a lot of focus to take it all in! 2d

I've had so much going on this month as my grandfather got ill suddenly & passed away, so I never got around to reviewing this. Overall, I admired the rich history, lush atmosphere, & the beauty in the writing. It was a bit tedious, with lots of description, shifting timelines, & multiple characters introduced. The MC was hard to connect with. An intricately written novel that requires a high degree of focus from the reader. 3.5 ⭐️!

Finishing this for #lmpbc while my oldest practices track drills on this fine Sunday afternoon! Great weather (although super HOT) so I thought I'd get a little reading in outside and complete the #maymadness #personalchallenge for this week!

This should complete at least 3 prompts from the #MayScavengerHunt

▪️ Flower on the cover
▪️ Over 300 pages
▪️ Author from a different country

Jee_HookedOnBookz How do you find it so far? Also I've mailed the next book to you today! 2mo

I got new book mail today! But since I'm too tired to unbox it, I'll just drop in this #unpopularopinion review lol. I honestly hated this #novella. I felt like nothing happened, Holly was not a redeemable character, & the writing didn't age well at all.🤷🏽‍♀️ I know everyone loves the movie, mainly because of Audrey Hepburn, but this is one of the few times I think the movie is probably better than the book. #audio #audible #audiobook #classics

After much deliberation, I finally chose my April #BOTM picks. They got me again. This is the 2nd time this year I filled 1 box, & used my 2nd account to fill another box! I think I only did that once at the end of last year.

The tagged book was a surprise pick. I didn't think I'd be interested, but was intrigued by Etaf Rum's endorsement. Thankfully Apple books has long samples. I loved the writing! Can't wait to receive my boxes. 😊 #bookhaul

TheNerdyProfessor Two accounts 😱😱😱 OMG. Genius. 2mo
lele1432 @TheNerdyProfessor lol yeah a while back I caught wind that some people had two accounts and I thought the same thing and created another one. 😊 Obviously most months I skip, but it's nice to have on those rare months (or maybe not so rare anymore? 🤔) when I want several books! 2mo
TheNerdyProfessor I have no idea how I would explain two boxes to my husband. I already have an overwhelming amount of books on my TBR 😂 2mo
lele1432 @TheNerdyProfessor I try to hide them from mine lol! When they come I try to go ahead and put them on a bookshelf before he sees. 😂 He challenged me to read 3 books for every 1 I buy, but I already had such a large TBR that it's not helping much lol. 2mo

1. Lol well this is a tricky one. There really weren't "good ole days" for people that look like me...however, I think being a kid in the '90's was less complicated than now (not sure what it was like as an adult), & the early 2000's had some nice music...& people seemed to act more civilized then.
2. All! For diff reasons. Prefer physical, esp hardcover, but need audio & digital for space & convenience

Forgot to take a picture before mailing, but it's headed your way @CSeydel to arrive by Apr.1st!

I hadn't kept up with the Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria, but this book made me do some research. The short, vignette style chapters sharpened the narrative focus for me. A "quick" read, although the subject matter is heavy. Left me with lots of questions about human depravity, martyrdom, brainwashing, & survival. 4 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️#lmpbc #groupw #round5

CSeydel Thanks @lele1432 I received it today! And I apologize @arubabookwoman that I haven‘t mailed mine yet - I was sick last week and didn‘t finish reading it. I‘m usually very good about staying on schedule, honest! I plan to mail it this week. 3mo

Recently scooped up this title from a #bookoutlet haul, and currently up early watching my recordings of the Atlanta Child Murders mini-series on Discovery ID. Enthralling and also deeply disturbing. Curious to read Baldwin's insights into the case, and the overall pulse of the city at the time! #truecrime #essays #nonfiction

lele1432 @BarbaraTheBibliophage I can't imagine how scary it must have been!! I stumbled across this book and can't wait to read it. Apparently Baldwin was so interested in and troubled by the murders that he traveled back to the U.S. from Paris to interview people involved in the case. 3mo

Almost DNF‘d because of this piece. I literally had no clue what was going on, yet I also felt like there was too much going on. It meanders around from an imaginary (I think) baby in past & present, a possibly mentally ill woman in present, long, drawn out descriptions of nature & food in the fridge, then domestic violence...At this point I don't even know if anything the narrator described is reality. I hope the remaining stories get better!

#UnpopularOpinion time. 😣 Maybe this isn't the right book at the right time, or maybe this author isn't for me. But I just couldn't spend 15hrs listening to the story of a woman who chose to leave a life of money & privilege to live in poverty off the grid with her abusive, irresponsible husband. I'm not buying his PTSD made him a jerk. Methinks he was always an abusive a-hole & that's why Cora's parents never liked him. 👇🏽👇🏽

lele1432 I wasn't drawn in by the writing. The 1 black woman is a big "mammy" type caricature with eye-roll descriptions like "saucer-sized hands," she's loud & the narrator makes her sound like a man. Too many clichés, not enough growth for me to keep going. Another unpopular opinion...I do not care for Julia Whelan as a narrator. Every character sounds the same across all books she narrates. Her male voices irritate me. Hard pass all around. #audio #botm 4mo

Happy Monday! Trying to reconcile my Litsy reads with my #Goodreads. I listened to this fascinating story via #Audible. I went into it fully expecting to hate the 2 brothers who killed their mother, assuming they were spoiled & did it for money. I finished it saddened by the abuse they suffered at the hands of their own mother, & frustrated that no one helped before it was too late. 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really good research done on Jane's background.

"The Husband Stitch" from this collection was a little horrifying! There's a kid version of this lol?? I'm glad I never read "The Green Ribbon" when I was younger!

I thought this was a solid short story, and pretty explicit, with themes surrounding marriage, desire, and how it feels to give your S.O. basically everything but that still not being enough. I'd give this story 3 or 3.5 stars. Trying to get through the rest of the collection today.

I read this a little over a year ago and STILL think about it. Nic Stone brings the characters to life without the angst & whininess I find irritating in some #YA. This is a very relatable book about the consequences of current race relations, & also highlights the role media sometimes plays in perpetuating witch-hunts. It's even comical at times! I recommend the audio; Dion Graham does such a fantastic job narrating. Five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished this a few days ago and...I don't know. I wanted to like it. The premise seemed different & interesting. But then the plot device gets revealed early on & it turns out to be nothing new. The lengths this "Dr." goes to uncover something so simple seems silly. Her chapters using the 2nd person but also switching from 1st to 3rd POV didn't work for me. Repetitive writing, wasn't much of a mystery & the end fell flat. 2 stars. ⭐️⭐️ ?

I ran across this anthology of very short stories, & it's been the perfect tune up for me to get back into reading! #currentlyreading #shortstories

AmyG Congrats! She is beautiful! 6mo

The narrative voice of this book has taken some getting used to for me because I feel it's a bit unnatural at times, but there are several quotes of wisdom I've found in this book that I've loved as well. One being not feeling the need to protect people, even those you love, while telling YOUR story. #literaryquotes #wordsofwisdom #literature #lifelessons

Lol...after reading an article by The Guardian on Ron Stallworth, I HAD to grab this book on #Audible and now I really want to see the movie. It sounds hilarious. Sad, but also hilarious. These supposed "superior racial beings" getting outsmarted by an "inferior" black cop is just too good to pass up. ? #audiobook #memior #race #kkk #stupidity #nonfiction #humor #currentlyreading

Hesitantly scooped up November Road so I could grab a couple of add-ons I've been wanting before I cancel my #botm subscription. I wasn't initially interested, but the writing sample seemed good, so I'm hoping it's a good read. Also was craving some quirkiness on my shelves, and I've been eyeing Goodbye, Vitamin and Sourdough for a long time. Here's to good reading! #fiction #literaryfiction #crimefiction #fantasy

Hooked_on_books I enjoyed both of your add-ons. Definitely quirky and fun! 10mo
lele1432 @Hooked_on_books oh good to hear! I'm excited about getting them! 10mo

Got to turn the little one's soccer tournament in San Antonio into a mini vacation! Just starting this book but I think I'm going to enjoy her writing style. I'm in the mood for something that will get me reflecting on life and family relationships. Also featured in photo, my bump AKA my youngest princess. ☺️ #mybumpandmybook #literaryfiction #contemporary #family #drama

Happy Friday! #UnpopularOpinion time lol. I thought this was just okay. It started off verrryyy slow & could've been edited down 100 pgs. The characters were a bit annoying & not flushed out. I got intrigued about 1/3 in, but that plot line didn't really go anywhere. The "lie" kept secret to build suspense ended up inconsequential. Many scenes were too improbable, but the final twist was surprising. 2.5 ⭐️s. I'd say it's a borrow. #thriller #botm

Reviewsbylola I bailed twice and I‘m officially done trying. 😂 10mo
Hooked_on_books I‘m so happy to see this! I thought this book was just bad and I don‘t get the love for it. Glad I‘m not alone. 10mo
lele1432 @Reviewsbylola it was sooo slow to get going!! I don't blame you for bailing lol. 10mo
lele1432 @HookedonBooks you're definitely not alone!! It was way longer than it needed to be and I wanted my time back lol. The twists weren't good enough to make up for the things I didn't like. I don't think I'll ever read his debut Final Girls if it's anything like this one. 10mo

I see #botm spoilers are up. 3 historical fiction & 2 thrillers...1 of which (tagged) I think came out in May. 😑😑😑 I used up my 2nd acct's credits this month so I could cancel it. Now I just have 1 credit left on my primary acct & I can't even find a book to use a throw away credit on. I think this validated for me that they moved away from literary & nonfiction in favor of thrillers, romance & historical fiction. It was fun while it lasted. 😞

Hooked_on_books Thanks for posting. The tagged book came out in May in the UK, but doesn‘t come out in the US until September. They‘ve picked a book by this author before. Even though I liked the other book, I find that a tad lazy. 10mo
lele1432 @Hooked_on_books ah, thanks for letting me know! September's picks admittedly confused me a little. Just seem a bit repetitive. (edited) 10mo
Hooked_on_books @lele1432 I agree with repetitive. It seems lately as though many of the books each month reflect one another instead of a variety of books. I don‘t get it, since if one doesn‘t interest you, none will. I‘m seeing a lot of people cancelling and I‘m sure this is part of why. 10mo

lele1432 @Hooked_on_books yes I think so! I'm going to wait on some writing samples to see if anything catches my eye. If not, hopefully cancelling this other account will just be temporary and allow me to get caught up on my huge botm backlog lol! 10mo
catiewithac 🚫 interested in any of these 📚 10mo
allthingskayla The Silence of the Girls and #FashionVictims look good. 10mo
lele1432 @allthingskayla I've got my eye on #fashionvictims! I read a blurb and wasn't hooked on the writing style but I'll decide after I read a longer sample. I'm hoping I like one because there are a few add-ons I still want! 10mo
allthingskayla @lele1432 I haven‘t seen any blurbs, but I read the synopsis and it sounds like a fun thriller. 10mo
nosferatoos I‘m skipping for sure this month unless someone makes a really good case for one of these. BOTM has moved so far away from the kinds of books I‘m interested in 😞 10mo
lele1432 @allthingskayla I just went to the book's page here on Litsy! Someone with an ARC posted a page they were reading. I am intrigued by the premise. 10mo
lele1432 @nosferatoos agreed. I feel like I've moved to the outskirts of their target audience. Which sucks for me because I used to be able to depend on them for new reco's that were outside of the box for me but still somehow right up my alley. 😞 10mo
nosferatoos @lele1432 that was exactly it for me. They used to have a great balance of books that were on my radar and books that I hadn‘t heard about but still found interesting. I‘m not a big thriller or romance reader and they‘re shifting too far in that direction for me. 10mo

Pickpick

4.25 ⭐️s! One of the best psychological "thrillers" I've read, the best in 2018. Although I consider this more of a character study of horrible people living in a horrible town with a horrible culture, which is probably why I like it. Some of the characters' tendencies I can see in people I know IRL. If you like creepy stories about creepy people plus a murder mystery, & don't mind a lack of twisty twists for the sake of having twists, read this!

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego The HBO show is actually pretty good. 11mo
lele1432 @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I agree! I've been watching it too. 11mo

Wasn't sure how my library hold for this one came in so fast, then when I picked it up today I realized it was the large print version lol. Which is fine, I don't mind getting the large print on high demand books. I'm starting to think these types of popular thrillers aren't really my taste, but I wanted to see what all the hype was about. We'll see if I can get into it! #thriller #libraryreads #weekendplans #booked

Ashley85 I‘m starting to think the same thing! I really didn‘t get the hype over his last one Final Girls. I thought it was just okay. 11mo
lele1432 @Ashley85 see I didn't even try to read Final Girls lol. 😂 I keep getting disappointed by these thrillers everyone else raves about. May not be my thing. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 11mo
Ashley85 Same here! Let me know if it‘s any good! 11mo
