This was a fast-paced crime thriller offered by #aardvark. I really enjoyed Detective Rita. She‘s 60 with a fellow detective love interest (not the focus of her POV though) and I appreciated her character. I was wrong about who the killer was and although the motive was far-fetched, the small twist helped it make more sense. I didn‘t feel very connected to the MC but the plot was engaging and #audio was well done. 3.5⭐️ #pop23 book with a pet

Library loan and #Aardvark pick. Overall this debut was humorous and touched on some very real topics that need to be discussed more, but it was mostly surface level, and didn‘t truly incorporate Prince into the mix. I appreciated the commentary on weaponized incompetence and unreal expectations of working parents (particularly moms), but cringed at the cheating husband excuses and general expectation that he‘d be forgiven. #Pop23 about a family

Pickpick

A soft pick. I never thought I‘d read a Colleen Hoover book as her others seem to be focused on themes like domestic violence β€œromance” and that‘s just a no for me lol.🀠But this domestic thriller got passed around during a group trip to India and it was a surprisingly entertaining guilty pleasure.πŸ₯΄ Dark, fluffy, sexy. Like binge-watching a new series with a bowl of popcorn and a glass of wine. #pop23 a self-published book

IndianBookworm I hope you had a good stay in India πŸ₯° 2mo
lele1432 @IndianBookworm yes!! I‘m so glad I got the opportunity to go back! (Went one other time in undergrad with the same professor. This was his last group trip and he made it an alumni trip.) 😊 2mo
IndianBookworm That is great. So, was it like an educational thing or purely entertainment? Also where are you from? 2mo

lele1432 @IndianBookworm So in undergrad it was purely educational and we partnered with some business students at a Delhi university to do some projects and presentations and we visited different companies in Bangalore as well. This time was more sightseeing but we went to different places like Guwahati, Cherrapunji, Udaipur, and Kochi. I‘m from Arkansas and went to school there but live in Houston now in the US. πŸ™‚ (edited) 2mo
IndianBookworm Omg, what a coincidence. Even I'm a business student from Delhi University. You definitely went to all the right places besides the mainstream ones. Kudos to your professor.😍 2mo
lele1432 @IndianBookworm it was a lovely trip! We did the Taj in Agra of course too. I loved all the palaces in Udaipur! I think the University we partnered with was FIIB in Delhi. 😊 My professor is originally from Bangalore so he was a great guide! 2mo
IndianBookworm Taj is a must, I agree. Udaipur, more like Rajasthan is an absolute beauty. I love the diversity we have here.πŸ™ˆ This is all so nice, makes me wanna go on a trip with your professor. 😁 2mo
lele1432 Yesss I love Rajasthan @IndianBookworm! Last time we went to Jaipur. So beautiful. Love the pink buildings lol and we rode an elephant down from one of the forts. And yes he‘s the best lol! My favorite professor by far! 2mo
IndianBookworm I have done all of this years back. Can't wait to do all of this again. I can see why he's your favorite. Also, I love how wholesome this conversation has been. 2mo

Lapvona: A Novel | Ottessa Moshfegh

I love satirical pieces on class, religion, sexism, and power, but I‘m not sure if that‘s what this was. It was almost too ridiculous. The childish lord with no ambition who played disgusting β€œgames” with the servants, the priest who simply pretended to be religious, the townspeople too oblivious to make a connection between their famine and the manor‘s bounty. Cannibalism wasn‘t even the most disturbing part! I‘ll read Moshfegh again though.

Got some reading in early this morning while my work laptop updated. I just returned from a 3 week adventure in #India and this book is taking me right back! I was pleasantly surprised to see two #IndianLit picks from #BOTM this month, and I got them both along with Lunar Love.πŸ˜… Happy Friday!

I never reviewed this last year, so doing it now (not for points).

A popular true crime podcaster covers a live rape trial and begins to receive desperate pleas for help from a listener with a story to tell. As events unfold, this "sleepy" coastal town begins to show cracks in its façade, and a history of violence and rape culture starts to rear its ugly head.

Filled with strong female warriors, assassins, queens, political strategists, musicians and more, I appreciated that these women were successful and capable in their own rights, and just so happened to fall in love with men and women who respected and understood them. Reviewing Queenie reminded me I never reviewed Luster smh! Queenie was kind of what I hoped this would be. It follows a twenty-something black woman as she entangles herself in the open marriage of an older white couple. The stark, deadpan, stream of consciousness writing made me feel disconnected from the MC, and I felt like I didn‘t get to know her outside of poor life decisions and gratuitous sex. Just realized I never reviewed this one. Just in time for spooky season, I may revisit it on audio. Certainly not for everyone and the end left me with mixed feelings, but ultimately I loved it and couldn‘t stop thinking about it! Weird, brooding, mysterious, and creepy. A young woman from Mexico City high society finds herself in a hallucinogenic fever dream inside a dilapidated mansion on a foggy, misty hill inhabited by a cruel, violent family.
