Mehso-so

The core of this story focuses on the effects of the birth of Melody, born to teenage parents, told non-linearly from multiple POVs. It's character-driven, but I never felt an emotional connection that made me invested in the characters' lives. Several major themes are presented, including the Tulsa massacre that destroyed Black Wall Street, sexual identity, parenting & classism, but they felt surface level. This one just wasn't for me. 3⭐️s

#LMPBC #Round7 #GroupC here are my picks! I originally thought I was leaning toward the tagged book, but now I'm torn lol. I have a mix of modern and traditional classics. Let me know your thoughts! Books tagged in the comments.

lele1432 Contemporary classic centered on women living in an inner-city housing project. 2w
lele1432 Classic crime mystery during Kennedy era in Arizona 2w
lele1432 Historical fiction classic about the Roman Empire 2w

lele1432 A dissection of a suburban 1950‘s turbulent marriage 2w
lele1432 Another John Williams but I couldn‘t resist the description of this melancholy classic of an academic from rural farming roots 2w
lele1432 He‘s not everyone‘s favorite, but I really like Dostoevsky‘s writing style and his analysis of the human condition. The translation I have in mind has been said to capture more of his intended humor than some others. 2w
Bookwormjillk Stoner has been on my TBR forever but really I would be happy with any of these 2w
lele1432 @Bookwormjillk I think you have swayed me. 🤔 I'll wait to see if the others have a preference, but I think Stoner would be a good one! 2w

Okay#LMPBC #Round7 #GroupI today was crazy so I'm just now able to post my choices. I'll tag them in the comments as well. 4 contemporary and 2 classics. I'm kind of leaning towards the tagged book, Signs Preceding the End of the World, but let me know what you all prefer!

lele1432 Mexican literature. A young woman must traverse the Mexican-US border to find her brother. (edited) 2w
lele1432 German literature. I was first introduced to Stefan Zweig through another #NYRB title I read for the #NYRBBookClub, Chess Story. I absolutely loved it. My only 5 star read so far this year. So I've been wanting to try another one of his works. 2w
lele1432 Hebrew literature. This one is a mystery concerning a hit-and-run. 2w
See All 10 Comments
lele1432 Another Spanish translation. We decided not to do The Shape of Ruins due to length, but I actually have a copy of this shorter title by the same author. It's intriguing as it deals with a political cartoonist who could ruin politicians' careers with his art. 2w
lele1432 Classic Indian literature. Described as three stories of forbidden love. Tagore received the Nobel Prize in Literature, the first Asian Nobel Laureate according to Amazon. He was also a poet. 2w
lele1432 I've been interested in this title for a while now, but it borders on Argentinian folklore/gothic horror, so probably not for the faint of heart. 2w
Carolyn11215 I‘d love to read Signs Preceding...but would be happy with any of these! 2w
lele1432 @Carolyn11215 okay great! If @rachelm and @aeeklund don't object, I'll go with that one! (edited) 2w
BarbaraBB I bought The Post Office Girl Too because of the #NYRBBookClub! 6d
lele1432 @BarbaraBB I also want Beware of Pity lol. 😊 He was an excellent author. (edited) 6d

The Chain | Adrian McKinty

Mehso-so

This had a great premise, but as other reviewers noted, kind of fizzled towards the end. The idea of an organization forcing child kidnap for ransom was intriguing, & I even liked the background on who was behind the chain. But I wasn't drawn in by any characters except maybe the kids, the bad guys were a bit cartoonishly evil, & by the end the chapters were too short & jumped around too much. Lots of suspension of disbelief required. 2.75⭐️s

A twisted domestic suspense novel that I enjoyed for the first 3rd, despite some juicy, yet unpalatable plot points, but it ended up devolving into a repetitive & disappointing work with quite a few noticeable plot holes. Stephanie changed from a neurotic mommy blogger with ugly secrets to a bumbling, people-pleasing idiot, & I found Emily's motives & control over people unbelievable. I still really want to see the movie! 2.5⭐️s

Hmmm. I decided to dig into the shorter one before bed. This was my first Andy Weir. It wasn't terrible, but the writing seemed both overly simplistic/juvenile, while also a bit like a quantum physics word dump. It felt clunky & awkward, as if a very inexperienced author wrote it. Like when the Indian wife is discussing quantum stuff & then randomly adjusts her sari & thinks Americans look good in their clothes but she prefers saris, lol. 2⭐️s

Here I am with another #unpopularopinion. Zuri was insufferable; hyper-sensitive when she felt disrespected, but proudly judged & disrespected anyone she felt was "bougie" & not black enough. Too many 1-dimentional caricatures of nasty rich folk who presumably didn't like Zuri b/c she's hood, & her hood status made her "realer" than anyone else. Writing was juvenile, unrealistic, & full of stereotypes. The love story felt forced & dry. 1.5⭐️s??

lele1432 I'm disappointed b/c this could've been an excellent illustration of class dynamics, but ended up losing all credibility with me. We got a bunch of broad-stroke interactions that were so exaggerated it almost felt like satire. Zuri's behavior is never addressed & doesn't change. She thinks blacks who speak proper are corny, yet she's well-read & aspires to go to Howard. Her character had too many incongruities. Narration was great tho. 1mo
SW-T I wasn‘t crazy about Zuri either for basically the same reasons. 1mo

Trying to finish all the books I started this summer. I'm about halfway through & wondering if I should have picked Ayesha At Last for my modern day retelling prompt. Zuri is a frustrating character. I get the concept of P&P but I'm tired of her judging the Darcy boys simply because they're not like the boys in her hood. They didn't actually act like they were better than everyone. I keep wanting to tell her there's not 1 way to be black.🙄

Finding this hard to rate! I loved Ma's depictions of NYC, American consumerism, & millennial corporate life. The ennui she portrayed that can result from the mundane tasks of product development was spot on. Even in the midst of Shen fever, corporate climbers tried to hold onto irrational career ambitions. I didn't like the post-apocalyptic storyline as much. It felt like too much going on, & I tired of Bob. Nancy Wu's narration was good. 3.5⭐️s!

My 1st Ruth Ware & Imogen Church (narration) & I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it! Highly atmospheric & indeed spooky, this was a proper mystery with a dash of psychological horror, featuring a luxurious old Victorian (possibly haunted?) smart house with a bad history. The reality of the situation was sad all around, & the family dynamics added a richness to the character dev & the plot itself. Church's narration was PERFECTION. 4.5⭐️s!

Very rarely do I actually enjoy "twists." Most seem contrived, unnecessary, gimmicky, and/or thrown in because the expectation of this genre has become having as many twists as possible, regardless of believability, overshadowing the need for a good plot and character development. Well, I didn't really see this coming, AND I think it was a good, necessary reveal. Well done Ruth Ware!! ?????? #CurrentlyReading #Audio #Audiobook #BOTM #Mystery

My first Ruth Ware, and although it started a bit slow with the MC's rambling in her letters, the introduction to Heatherbrae House is sooo good and creepy! 🌚 Imogen Church is a perfect narrator for this book. #Audio #Audiobook #BOTM #Mystery #CurrentlyReading

CoffeeNBooks I can't wait to read this one! 1mo
lele1432 @CoffeeNBooks It's really atmospheric! Seems great for the coming of Fall. 😊🍁👻 1mo

Pickpick

Between so-so & a pick. Some clunky writing, & Hen never seemed like a fully fleshed-out MC. Some reveals were too convenient, like Hen's prior behavior, or unnecessary. The first reveal felt too early. I enjoyed the psychotic on full display, but have tired of the unreliable mentally ill MC trope. Still unsure if the main twist was well done or gimmicky. But overall this was a fast, entertaining serial killer read that kept me wanting more! 3⭐️s

Clearly I should have picked my books yesterday. 🙄 My #BOTM boxes won't ship until Sept. 11th!! 😩😩😩 I tried to show SOME restraint and didn't add The Chestnut Man or The Goldfinch. I may add those two next month. The Chestnut Man sounds like the perfect October #screamathon read! #bookhaul

TheBookStacker My box already shipped somehow! Very excited for Wild Game! (edited) 2mo
lele1432 @TheBookStacker omg seriously?! Well I'm excited for you! But mad at myself for not making time to pick yesterday lol. I think a lot of members chose early and they probably got all those orders out the door before the holiday weekend. I should have known better! 🤦🏽‍♀️ 2mo
lele1432 @TheBookStacker and yes I've been looking for a mother/daughter complicated relationship read, so I think Wild Game will be perfect! 2mo
TheBookStacker Honestly I didn‘t even register it was a holiday weekend so now that makes so much more sense to me! Lol 2mo
Tamra I loved the Atwood! 2mo

Mehso-so

A look at a caregiver's complex relationship dynamics. No real plot, but there are relatable anecdotes concerning career choices, not being where you thought you'd be in life, & the mundane, like battles with laziness & proper human interaction. It packs in a lot; grief, loss, brain trauma, queerness, blurred lines of employee/friend, but some of the pontifications on misogyny & religion felt misplaced or rushed & didn't keep my focus. 2.75⭐️s

cathipink I requested this at the library bc I saw it on the LitHub fall release list. I wasn't feeling it at the time, but I'm thinking I might not go back to it either, based on your review. 2mo
lele1432 @cathipink Hi Cathi! I think your enjoyment definitely depends on what you're in the mood for. It's without a plot, so it's mostly the MC's inner thoughts & interactions with her girlfriend & the family she works for. I enjoyed some of these thoughts, but others came across as random or seemed to ramble on & lose my attention. Too many ideas were packed into this novella, & they felt unfinished. But I see potential & will read this author again. 2mo

Been MIA for a little bit. I was busy at work preparing for a trip, then spent the last 5 days like this on a cruise lol. We saw Grand Cayman & Cozumel. This book could not have been more fitting! The lush scenery, tropical environment...it was perfect. A bit confusing keeping up with the families & who owns what, but it's sooo good! Plan to finish during #24b4Monday #summersendreadathon #literarycrew #buddyread
