Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe | Benjamin Alire Saenz
This Printz Honor Book is a tender, honest exploration of identity (Publishers Weekly) that distills lyrical truths about family and friendship.Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendshipthe kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

“Someday, I'm going to discover all the secrets of the universe." Aristotle goes with Dante and his parents to the desert so that they can look at the stars. This is a beautiful scene in the book and so are these images from Pinterest.

A really good book I enjoyed listening to in 1 day. #lgbtq #comingofage #ya #diversereads

I know I‘m late to the #BFCr3 check-in, but it was a bit of a crazy day. My friend got hired Thursday at a new school and they have open house on Monday, so we went in to help her setup her room...all day.😔 so I didn‘t get my mental health goal in today, like I had planned, but I surpassed my 77,000 steps goal, I only drank 1 sugary drink, and read 1 book.

TheBookAddict I forgot I was supposed to track water intake, but I do know that I at least met that 64oz water goal half of the week. I also worked out Monday - Friday, no yoga though. #BFC (edited) 2w

I absolutely loved this book. Reading this truly didn‘t feel like reading, it felt like hearing somebody‘s thoughts. I loved how realistic the characters are, and I especially love Ari‘s relationship with his parents and Dante‘s parents. This book was absolutely incredible and I‘m really glad I read it.

I liked this book because it portrays voices that are not usually heard. It's enjoyable but I thought that some parts of the story didn't seem to flow together well. I also didn't like the ending, which I think may have been the whole point of the story 🤣 so maybe it's not for me 🤷‍♀️

CarolynM I started this but couldn't get into it. Should I try again? 1mo
Sarz @CarolynM I think it starts off pretty good, so if that didn't capture your interest, maybe not? 1mo

This book has been in my stack for YEARS and I‘m sad I just finally read it. I stayed up last night and finished it... and I was only halfway done. 😬 Such a good story about finding yourself, family relationships and relationships with others. A good “LGBTQ” story that takes place in 1987 that teaches a wonderful lesson of acceptance and love.

"Scars. A sign that you've been hurt. A sign that you have been healed."

A reread & still deserves All the stars in the universe! Written so beautifully & full of emotions, 2 teenage boys met each other over 1 summer & became best friend, it's about coming of age, love and family, not just about boy kissing boys, but embracing who you are.

Can something be both heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time? This finally made it to the top of my tbr after reading a buzfeed columnist who said she was 6yrs late finding this book, but now won't leave home without the book AND audio book versions with her. And as far as literary security blankets go this is a good choice with its loving, warm parental figures, sweeping, powerful emotions and earnest, endearing honesty. #pridemonth

IndoorDame @LibrarianJen yes!!! I read it on Libby but I plan to make it a permanent part of my library next time I'm at a brick and mortar bookshop 2mo

IndoorDame @LibrarianJen good tip! I was imagining this in hardcover, but you're right, I probably won't find that on the shelf since it's not even a new release. (I haven't tried the audio either, but I expect I'll likely borrow a library copy at some point) 2mo

This was a great contemporary, coming of age, YA book. It takes place in the late 80s between two Mexican teens. There's a bit too much "talking about feelings" for my liking, but I'd bet even Aristotle would agree with me. Talking feelings is way more of Dante's type of thing. I really liked the family aspect here where Aristotle is realizing that his parents are more than just parents. They are real people with real emotions and a tough history.

I have to say, the resolution in the final chapter of this book wasn‘t satisfying enough. It didn‘t match the brilliant, sharp prose of the rest of the book. Having said that—I adored this one. Saenz is sharp, concise, and writes vivid characters you will fall in love with. Definitely a pick! 😍🤩

Mesmerisingly true to seventeen year-old's struggle with identity. Sweet and pure but nonetheless intense. If you have not cried like a baby by the end of this one you are made of stronger matter than I am.
Its a breath of fresh air that while you know that the love Ari and Dante have for each other will face many obstacle from this environment their family's support will shelter them from not taking a chance with each other.

This RF book absolutely took my breath away reading. A&D is a inspiring and winning book with many awards, some being the Pura Belpre, ALA Stonewall, LAMBDA Literary and the Printz Honor Award.. Aristotle is an 15yo with anger problems and a brother in jail, when he meets Dante over summer break at a swimming pool, an unlikely and shaky friendship blooms. #LAE3414SP19

JessicaRosell This book is long, over 300 pages, so we couldn‘t quite do a RA, but a great way to get older students to delve deep into the topics of this book would be LC. Some great articles from edutopia.org for how to start LC‘s, along with some tips and tricks, would be https://tinyurl.com/y45kdchq and https://tinyurl.com/y3a4vzs3 6mo
JessicaRosell There are many themes and messages that students today can relate to and discover while reading this book. LC‘s can be used to touch on ESOL 32 by using student pairs for team learning, and UDL 8.3 in fostering collaboration and community.
